I'm John Bachelors in Wintery, New England now heading into mud season.
Those who have lived in New England understand there are five seasons and mud is the favorite
season of all spaniels who have been locked up for the winter storms to get out there
and jump in mud puddles.
And claim that you're going to wipe your legs when you hit the snow pile, but you skip
the snow pile and head inside with mud all the way up to your shoulders is not fun.
So mud season in New England and coming fall, not yet, still summertime technically.
In New South Wales, Jeremy, a snake in an olive jar.
How did this happen?
Well, John, this happened by sheer fact that the person who put that snake in the olive
jar didn't realize it was a snake.
Now, this story happens here in Southwestern Sydney.
So I was actually within, I believe from what I can see in the story, about 10 minutes
away from where I am right now.
So probably one of my neighbors, I haven't quite picked two of these yet, but I'm trying
to figure it out.
But what happened was this particular individual here in Southern Sydney found what they thought
was an eel.
They thought there was an eel on the ground.
It was in a little bit of water.
I thought, as most people I guess do, I'm going to go and collect it.
So they went inside, they grabbed an olive jar, they put the eel into the olive jar, didn't
think anything of it.
Anyway, shortly after that, they decided to show a neighbor, then the neighbor, having
a close look, suddenly realized what that caught.
That actually caught a small red belly black snake.
And what gave it away was the fact that they actually was red on the belly of this so-called
eel.
So needless to say, the snake's catching service here in Southern Sydney was called out.
They took the jar, they got the snake, and it's humanly released it.
But now, John, there is a warning out there saying that if you see something slimy and
slippery on the ground, if it looks like a snake, don't think it's an eel.
Just leave it alone.
Call the snake service.
If it turns out there's an eel, then sure enough, that's okay, the snake catcher can
tell you.
But for the love of God, please don't pick up what you think is an eel and pull it
in a jar.
And kicker here, John, is really too.
This person should know better because here in Southern Sydney, we just don't get
eels.
In fact, when most of Australia, we typically don't get eels except up in the northern tropical
parts of Queensland.
So, honestly, I don't know why I thought it was an eel.
We're all lucky that didn't get bitten by this thing.
But that's how you get a red belly black snake into an olive jar.
Jerry, Jerry, Jeremy, who collects eels?
There is no such eel collection.
Once upon a time, I'm aware that they did eat them.
They were delicacy.
But I haven't heard that.
Do you have them on your menus in Australia?
No, we don't because one, we don't actually have them in Australia except maybe in some
fancy restaurants you might be able to find because they'll bring them in from Asia.
And two, I mean, if this person thought this was an eel, it was a pretty slender eel
because eels are normally quite a bit bigger and fatter.
But this was quite a skinny, obviously snake-like-looking thing.
So, no.
We typically don't have eels and I'm not aware of anybody collecting them here.
All right, this story is so hard to believe.
We're going to go right to T20 because there's just no way it makes sense.
Jeremy and I cannot explain a red belly black snake in a olive jar because you want to
take it home.
We're talking about venom that will kill you within an hour.
It will certainly ruin your evening.
And putting any snake in a jar, good heavens, when we have garden snakes, that's all.
And when I see one, I become extremely respectful.
The garden snake has its life and it's proceeding according to its plan.
Why put it in a jar?
It doesn't make sense, Jeremy.
It really does.
And I think this is the whole point of the story and why this week on Facebook, in the
local council newsletters, the reminder is if you see a snake for love of God, just
don't pick it up.
And also too, actually, there was one mention on Facebook pointing out that there actually
is no eels here.
So exactly like John, I don't understand the thought process behind this.
I'm having a serious look at my neighbors and trying to figure out who may have been
culprit on this one to can only be within the short radius.
But it's a strange one.
But I guess people do what people do.
That reminds me of the tiger.
Wasn't there a tagger snake loose in the neighborhood a year ago or two years ago?
Oh, absolutely.
It wasn't that that was about, oh, just about a month ago, a year.
So it was about 13 months ago.
We actually had a tiger snake here on the property, which we had spotted about a year earlier
ago.
So we knew it was there.
We knew it was almost certainly living in one of the drains because tiger snakes like
sort of damp, moist and warm areas.
And it's still out there.
We don't think it's been caught.
There have been a lot of tiger snakes and brown snakes caught around this area.
So there's a potential of this, but it's moved on.
And honestly, I think that's probably why people say leave my loan and they will leave
your loan because we've had other houses built up next to us in that year since the tiger
snake.
And it's quite obviously got the hint and moved on.
And that's what snakes do.
So you don't actually have to catch them.
You just have to leave them alone and they will naturally not go near.
They'll stay away.
Two comments.
One, the disturbing of an ecosystem with human development.
The house building is street building.
That disturbs the whole ecosystem and it takes some time to settle down.
It's restless.
And when it is the urban ecosystem, there's no way you can plot out what is ordinary, what
is normal.
Everything in the ecosystem has to move and make room for something else.
And human beings coming up against that ecosystem are not part of the balance for some time.
And so therefore, what I always told myself in New York is never one cockroach.
And I would tell you the same thing.
There's never one tiger snake.
There's never one red belly black snake.
There's always a nest, a nest, a nest, and the nest have been disturbed.
Is that a fair warning, Jeremy?
That absolutely is.
In fact, I do know that only really a couple of, I won't even say so, but it's really
only a couple of blocks over where we do have some farmland.
That's very much where there is tiger snakes.
There's a couple of canals as well, I guess you could call them, alongside the properties
too.
And they are right full of tiger snakes and France snakes right now.
And it's because as you described too, they are creatures that live in families.
There are never just one around.
So I like to think that the one we had here has kind of headed over there because it's
within 200 meters.
So I mean, tiger snakes, red bellies, and brown snakes live within one kilometer of their
whole life.
They are very, very territorial.
I like to think that our snake is over there living out a good life, happily being untouched
by humans.
But when you see one, you do always assume that there are more end snake catches to it
too.
If they catch one, they will still do a second look of your property, just to find where
the other one probably is.
I'm going to start checking the eaves of my house, Jeremy, whenever I talk to you, I think,
well, you know, let's not be over-confident about snakes.
Okay.
We're going to move on to cricket because there's much to say about ashes.
Yes, it won't go away.
It just won't leave the room.
And also teach one.
And Jeremy's ashes in New South Wales were at the moment.
It's beautiful coming fall weather.
I'm in New England where it's muddy and beautiful coming spring.
There were actually a couple of daffodils sprouting out next to stone walls just as they
should.
Here's the truth.
