Salford Council Demolishes Hidden Mural

On April 3, a hidden mural by Hungarian artist, George Mayer Martin, turned out to be a vibrant

masterpiece, but Solford Council demolished it anyway.

Created in 1954 for St. Ambrose Barlow RC High School in Swinton, the piece called

The Five Joyful Mysteries of the Virgin's Rosary.

Covered a whole foyer wall, it got buried under plaster and paint in 1994, then forgotten

for 30 years until rediscovered last year.

Winners, including the artist's great nephew Nick Braithway and former school assistant

head Sally Phenomore, fought to save it during the school's 70th anniversary project.

They raised around 4,000 pounds to hire experts who peel back layers, revealing intact frescoes

with bright colors and detailed figures.

But the council saw historic England's refusal to list it as a go-ahead to tear down the

last standing part of the closed school for affordable housing.

Mr. Harbroken, calling the demolition sneaky and a huge loss for Solford's cultural heritage.

Sally said it was a gift to generations, and they could have salvaged sections instead

of wiping it out completely.

The destruction hit hard right after their big reveal, leaving everyone feeling betrayed

by local leaders.

New expert reports from Arte Conservation confirmed the mural survived in great shape

across the full wall, done in true, born fresco style.

It was a fragment, but a whole coherent work.

Tests on October 3rd in December 16th through 18th proved it could have been recovered with

care.

Yet historic England argued it was too concealed to judge fully.

Meanwhile, the council insists they paused work once alerted and got the green light from

the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.

They noted it was already covered when they took over the site.

This class shows how fragile our preservation can be when development calls the shots worth

watching as more old gem surface.
