Scott Faughn, Missouri Times, On Map Decision | 9-9-26

0:00to the morning on 95 7 FM K C M O. What the heck is going on in Missouri? This is just this is beyond bizarre as we sit here on a Wednesday morning and try to dissect it all. Scott Fawn, publisher of the Missouri Times knows this state politically as well as anybody. He's joining us on K C M O talk radio. So yesterday the Supreme Court comes out. Brett Kavanaugh comes out and says, yeah, you know, I'm not going to deal with this whole reversing the Missouri Supreme Court decision on these maps that are now going to be going back to the old maps where a manual cleaver has a stranglehold on the Kansas City District. But then you have this federal judge in St. Louis saying, no, you can't go back to the old maps and we're going to stick with the new maps. So Scott, what is going on with this?

1:01Well, I would say if you were a person who was in the trial bar and you thought it was funny to help elect the most extreme Republicans you could and cause Caleb Routon and Dave Schaff and Cindy O'Loughlin and Tony Luke DeMire immense trouble from the chaos. Now you get a taste of it. How do you like it? Good for you. What's happening now is the Supreme Court. The most part, if I was Brent Kavanaugh, I would stick with the Democrats every time forever always. He wouldn't even hear the case. He thought it was so little merit. He wouldn't even refer it onto the full court. So it comes back here. So they go to St. Louis. They didn't want to go to Kansas City. They go to St. Louis. They get a judge over there to give them a small win. And then last night, any hostage said, hey, I'm not going to comply with this court order, right? So they're going to hold him in contempt. He's going to get served today. And the show up in court on Thursday and tell the Supreme Court why he shouldn't be held in contempt for saying he's going to not obey their rulings.

2:04So it is nuts. It is chaotic. It is everything the people that sold this chaos wanted. They just didn't want it to happen to them. So who are you saying, so this chaos? The trial bar. The folks that are so upset right now about the sale that you're just hearing being filibustered, which plays into this. I don't care who says it doesn't. No, please, she were human beings. The trial bar funded the right wing folks. And now all the chaos that was thrown on the Republican party, they're getting a taste of it. And let me tell you, sir, they don't like it. They do not like the chaos that they brought. Now when it gets thrown at them, they love it when it's thrown at Republicans. They don't like it when they're having to deal with it. Why would it bother the trial attorneys and the trial bar, and why would all this bother them? Oh, because what's going to happen is their normal enemies are going to seize on this, and they're going to start a court plan site. Right now, there's things called the Missouri Plan. I think it actually serves the state extremely well. But let's be honest, it is something that generally Democrats have valued in Republicans

3:07haven't. Now, as the trial attorneys have been very generous in their contributions to a certain part of the party, it's going to be very disruptive in the party if they go for that. So national folks who want to get rid of our court plan and do it direct election, which will mean far more right wing people are going to elect it if you had to logically, I would assume, they're going to latch onto this out in Washington. All the problems started when Washington got involved in Missouri that I've said it before, they never care of the last person that came here from Washington, DC to do us any good was Lewis and Clark. Ever since then, we're just a pawn to these people. They treat us terribly. No one in Washington that set this whole bull in motion cares about the problems that the Missourians do with right now. They don't care. They despise us. They look down on us, but the Missouri Republican party every time they can then for them they do. They only know one position when the Washington people call and it's on their knees. Okay. Well, listen, you've been, I would say as one of the most important voices in the state

4:12politically, a big supporter and I don't disagree with you here. I'm governor Mike Eho and his leadership ability in the state. But did he then just acquiesce to Washington on this special session and this redrawing of the map a year ago and if so, what does that say? Well, 100%. He absolutely did. I think it says that he looked at the situation and said, look, to many people really care who their congressman is really any regular pro is probably not. Anything he had a lot of things he wanted to do for the state to move it forward. But in this instance, yes, he'd been to the pressure of the White House. Every politician I've ever covered and I've covered a lot of them. I've interviewed every major political figure in this state for the last 15, 20 years. Every one of them would acquiesce to a president this popular wanting you to do something that's purely partisan. He acted, but but doesn't change the fact, yes, this ball was set in motion in Washington and Mike Eho did not stop it. And that's just the facts. So now we just sit here and I guess we wait.

5:12I mean, what what the heck are we supposed to think in Kansas City about these these maps today with yesterday being the deadline to finalize the maps? Like does this now go back to the Supreme Court to decide what the whether or not what the US federal judge did yesterday in St. Louis is going to hold like how's this work? We set back and we've become a joke again and we're boxed and we're ridiculed because no one in Washington that started this ball cares at all what we look like. We are so insignificant to them. We are just ponds. There's with these federal society people, they come into our state and they play with us like ponds and they're generally Republican. So Republicans, they all great and whatever they treat us like dirt worse than dirt slime. They look down on us at every turn. It is everything you think it is. It is. And they don't care. And the funny part is what's going to end up happening here is the trial barred Missouri who sowed a lot of this chaos, frankly. And the Washington Republican establishment folks, they're all sitting back.

6:15I do think the trial bar does care. I think they do care what kind of state they live in. I don't think they meant for it to go this far. It just went further than they planned. But no, they're going to sit back and now they're going to have to fight their natural enemy, which are these Washington Republicans. They're coming over the court plan change. It'll be something squarely and it'll probably be bad for the state because again, the last person that came here to help you from Washington, if you are a Missouri and is Lewis in Clark, not the rest of them in here to help you at all. Don't fool yourself. So yeah, it's, it's limbo. I think what happens is the old map goes back. I mean, the Supreme Court ultimately, the federal court in St. Louis can't overrule the Missouri Supreme Court. The only court that can overrule them overrule the Missouri Supreme Court is the US Supreme Court. Now, they can do a temporary stay and whatever. I think it's interesting that Kansas City folks, they're, they're, they're the future of their congressional district will be decided by St. Louis judge. So then what does this all mean when it comes to whether or not we're going to be ultimately voting as a state on these maps and how far that ultimately goes where like, do we even have a state legislature anymore with any teeth and everything's just going to go to a ballot in this state? Yeah, you do. Are those teeth ground down quite a bit? Yeah. If a minimum six passes, we will be a state ruled by referendums. Yeah. And whether you think that's good or bad, I'll leave that up to you. I mean, frankly, when you look at the job that really by in a republic form has done, maybe folks think a think of referendum style government be better. But I go back to it's a little bit, it's a little bit of the problem of they've ran out of stuff to do. They've ran out of normal good government Republican stuff to do. So now they're down into this. Well, have they run out or have they just not done it?

8:17I mean, I tell, tell me what the big Republican wing is the last few years. There, there, there, wins have been confined to social issues. That's what I mean. To be honest with you. That's it. Now, I would say they've done some things on public safety that look, you know, in a Twitter world, you want a 10 second solution to a multi-generational problem. That's not real. That's candy land. That's, that's, that's the silly. The fact of the matter is there, if you're going to, if you're going to address things like prime in the cities, this is a five, 10 year solution. If you're an adult about it. Now, you could do some things, quick hits, but overall, the stuff they're working on is generational problems. And to be fair, the place they've worked is place of democratic Iran for both of our lifetimes plus. And, you know, you can argue the successor failure. Yes, cities do produce a lot of revenue, a lot of culture and a lot of crime. And that's generally true everywhere. Say, listen, kid, the city are a little out of control and they've been addressing that. But, you know, that's pretty much their wins.

9:19You know, and you could say they haven't done them. I mean, they put them to the vote of the public and the public said no. So, you know, and again, I go back to running a government well isn't a good Facebook post. Burning a government down gets a lot of likes. And that's what you're seeing here. Yeah. So, I, into the day, is it chaos? Yeah. Do I think probably you're going to be voting on the old map that Quiever likes? Probably. Um, on the, you know, I would have said two weeks ago, you're probably going to vote on the map. You voted on on primary day. I'd say now you're probably not. And in all of its chaotic and all of it is just, it is, uh, it is a sad statement on our state, but it is what happens every single time the Washington people, metal in our state, they just, you, one day, one SMS, all that old Pudgy Hill, Billy, that old German was right. Maybe we shouldn't listen to Washington people and do whatever they say. Maybe they don't have our best interest at heart because let me help you out.

10:19They don't. They look down on you. If you're in rate down, they think they look down on you. If you're in liberty, they think you're just a pawn and a loser and an idiot. If you're in Odessa, they think really you should be picking up a rifle and helping you crane. They don't know you and they don't care about you. And here is example eight, good, Julian, 500,000, and 42 of how the Washington people use these Republicans and they don't care about them at all. They laugh at them. In a minute, they hang the phone up or shut the door. They laugh at these fools in Missouri. They think, oh, this is the time the Washington DC people actually care about us wrong. They don't. They are jokes to them and they don't see it. And so they continually get into stuff that, look, do I think, you know, honestly, when you look at Massachusetts and Illinois and Maryland, do I think an A-Dome app is justified? Yes, I do. Absolutely do. I don't see how you can ask who one is good and the other is bad. I think you got to do it right. And if you do it on a Missouri and time table and a Missouri way, I think you have a Missouri

It makes everybody do insane things because, you know, we're Midwesterners. We are not East Coasters. When we try to act that there be hast, this is what happens.
