Hey there, from CNN, I'm David Rind with the five things you need to know for Tuesday, March 31st.
0:06
This Supreme Court released a major opinion this morning about Colorado's ban on so-called
0:11
conversion therapy for gay and transgender youth.
0:14
CNN chief legal affairs correspondent Paula Reed has more.
0:18
In the decision we got just a few moments ago, we really didn't get a final answer on whether
0:22
this law is constitutional, but we did get some insight into what the justices are thinking.
0:27
So instead of making a final ruling, they are taking this entire case and throwing it
0:31
back down to the lower court saying that it needs to be reviewed this question with
0:37
a heightened level of scrutiny.
0:39
So well, the state of Colorado is not really officially losing.
0:43
It is likely that once this goes through another round of litigation and this issue comes
0:48
back up that this law very likely will be struck down on First Amendment grounds.
0:54
LGBTQ advocates say this is yet another setback for their cause that could be felt
0:58
in nearly half the country in states that have similar bans.
1:01
Conversion therapy has been scientifically debunked and research shows the practice can
1:05
increase the person's risk of suicide and cause other long-term health problems such
1:09
as depression, anxiety, and high blood pressure.
1:12
More news coming up including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth says regime change has
1:17
occurred in Iran, but changed to what?
1:21
You said you were over him, but his hoodie is stealing your rotation.
1:27
Grab your phone, snap a few pics, and sell it on D-Pop listed in minutes with no selling
1:33
And just like that, a guy 500 miles away just paid full price for your closure and right
1:40
But I've got tonight's dinner paid for.
1:43
Start selling on D-Pop.
1:44
We're taste, recognizes taste.
1:46
Just now with no selling fees, payment processing fees and boosting fees still apply.
1:50
See website for details.
1:54
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Dan
1:58
Cain gave an update this morning on the war with Iran, their first briefing in nearly
2:03
Hegseth said they want a deal to end the war, but said military options would continue
2:07
if one doesn't come together.
2:09
He also echoed what US officials said over the weekend when it comes to who is actually
2:15
This new regime, because regime change has occurred, should be wiser than the last.
2:22
The new Supreme Leader, Mishdab Ahamanay, has still not been seen in public.
2:25
It's unclear who exactly is negotiating for Iran.
2:28
Hegseth also acknowledged that the US is aware that rival countries are providing intelligence
2:33
on US assets to Iran.
2:36
There's some things adversaries are doing to provide info and intel that they shouldn't.
2:42
And ultimately, we move things around and don't want to be one of the biggest principles
2:46
you learn in the military is to not set patterns, predictable patterns.
2:51
CNN reported earlier this month that Russia is providing intelligence about the locations
2:55
and movements of American troops, ships, and aircraft.
3:00
Four dollars and two cents.
3:02
That is the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the US, according to Triple
3:06
It's the first time prices have topped four dollars since 2022.
3:09
It's risen a full dollar since the war with Iran began.
3:12
CNN's Alicia Wallace is here.
3:14
Alicia, what does this mean for the broader economy?
3:18
While some folks have been paying more than $4 for a gallon of gasoline for a while,
3:23
when the national average surpasses that, it carries a slew of implications for the broader economy.
3:30
First, high gas prices dent spending.
3:33
This hits lower income Americans the hardest.
3:37
And it's not just stopping with fuel.
3:40
Sharply rising oil prices and the shortages of fertilizer and other key inputs,
3:45
that can quickly ripple through the ecosystem, making all kinds of goods and services more expensive.
3:53
It's a domino effect that causes inflation to rise and amplifies affordability concerns,
3:59
contracts the economy, and heightens recession risks.
4:05
European leaders continue to weigh in on the war in the Middle East.
4:08
European Council President Antonio Costa says he called Iran's president to push for de-escalation.
4:14
Italy's Defense Minister has denied a US request to use a military base in Sicily,
4:18
that's according to Italian media, and it follows a similar decision from Spain,
4:22
which closed off its airspace to US planes involved in the war.
4:27
When we come back, new details about the arrest of Tiger Woods stick around.
4:33
I'm CNN tech reporter Claire Duffy.
4:35
This week on the podcast, Terms of Service.
4:38
Just as a reminder of how important in landmark this trial was,
4:42
so many people have said for years this was impossible,
4:45
that it was impossible to sue social media companies for harms against children,
4:50
two advocates and moms themselves,
4:52
Nikki Petrozi, who hosts the podcast, Scrolling to Death,
4:56
and Sarah Gardner, CEO and founder of the Advocacy Organization, the Heat Initiative.
5:00
I never imagined that we would get all yeses on the verdict forum
5:05
and even get to the damages forum.
5:07
And this is the first time that juries of regular Americans
5:11
have been asked to render decisions on youth safety on social media.
5:15
And they found that these companies knew that their platforms were risky
5:18
and posed real harms to young people.
5:21
Listen to CNN's Terms of Service, wherever you get your podcasts.
5:28
We're getting new insight on Friday's arrest of Tiger Woods,
5:30
after he crashed another vehicle and flipped his car on to its side in Jupiter, Florida.
5:35
CNN's visible result tells us what's in the arrest affidavit.
5:38
Now, Tiger Woods told that a resting officer
5:41
that he was looking down at his phone,
5:43
he was changing the radio station and did not notice the corn front of him had slowed down.
5:47
He ultimately ended up clipping that car and flipping his own right there onto its side.
5:52
Now, the arresting officer noted that he observed several signs of impairment
5:56
that Woods was sweating profusely, hiccuping throughout the entire investigation,
6:01
that his eyes were bloodshot and glassy and his pupils extremely dilated.
6:05
Now, Woods told him when the officer noted that he was limping and strumpling a little bit to the right,
6:12
Woods told him that he had seven back surgeries and 20 different operations on his legs.
6:17
Now, Woods agreed to and ended up failing several field sobriety tests.
6:22
And when they were arresting him and searching him,
6:24
they discovered two white pills inside of his pant pocket
6:29
that ended up being prescribed hydrocodone.
6:31
Bresthalizer tests at the county jail found there was no alcohol and Woods's system,
6:35
but Woods refused to take a urine test to rule out any hard drug use,
6:39
according to the affidavit.
6:40
He now faces DUI-related charges and this raises questions about his return to the master's tournament next month.
6:47
That's all for now. Our next episode comes here way later tonight.
6:50
I'll talk to you later.
