And it's Josh Jo. He ran a bit around the receiver, Chippy Tone on the end line, kept his feet in, and keeps the patriots out of the end zone.

2:09The coaches are going absolutely nuts in the booth back to us. Welcome to NFL Daily. That was Steve Ravel. That was the Seattle Seahawks winning the kickoff game in very similar fashion to the way they ended last season. At least giving Steve Ravel a holy catfish call at the end, dominating on defense, not so much on offense because they had lost their quarterback Sam Darnold earlier in the game. But I'm with Jordan Rodriguez. We are talking about a regular season football game, and we are still talking about this Seattle defense. We'll get to the Darnold of it all, and Drake may go in interception, interception, interception in the fourth quarter, and what a disastrous loss it is for New England. But I know you, Jordan, and I know you just want to start by giving some flowers to the defense that won them the Super Bowl a year ago.

3:11Yeah, absolutely. Notable about Drake May's three interceptions was per next gen. All of them were on pass attempts of 15 plus yards. And otherwise, when he threw underneath, which was really the only thing that was working against this Seattle defense, the way that they played, he was 22 for 2559 yards and a touchdown. So throwing middle to deep did not work for Drake May because that's just what this Seahawks defense does. Greg, I showed you my sheet. I saved a card, a card entirely for Seattle's defense tonight to see, to fill it up with moments where they were simply exceptional. And I had one space left and we were on the live stream getting ready. And I said, Greg, it's a final drive for the Patriots. I've got one spot left at the bottom of my card and look what happens. Josh Job, just exceptional body control to toe tap that in and come up with the interception that sealed the game. Yeah. I think so many things about this game. It was fascinating for the Patriots to be up 10 points with Sam Darnel going out on

4:15the fifth play for the Seahawks offense with a hip injury. He did not return. We'll break down what that could mean long term for the Seahawks later. We'll see what they say post game. We're taping this right after the game. They have a touchdown lead with the ball driving in the fourth quarter to start. And that's when the interceptions happen. I want you to go through one or two of those plays as we go. But I do think it's worth mentioning like the first interception, the Nirmaya Pritchett interception is an absolutely incredible individual play where Romeo Dobbs, who was a disaster tonight for the Patriots, didn't make a great effort on it. The Julian Love interception was an absolutely great play. And then that last interception, it's one thing to run the route like the receiver. It's another thing to go high point the ball, get your feet down. These guys, even the third, fourth guys that you think of when you think about this defense, like Job and Pritchett get it done. In fact, we're the only show here that can go and give highlights right off the bat.

5:19I want to actually hear that Julian Love interception taking it back to the fourth quarter. Actually, I'm going to switch that up. Let's go to the Nirmaya Pritchett interception because that brings us to the start of the fourth quarter. The Patriots are driving and this is really where the beginning of the end for this Patriots offense and Drake May's night starts. Let's hear that Pritchett interception. May under center, play fake to kinder this time. May hits his back foot. He's going to let it fly down the near side, reaching up, tipping it up, intercepting it, coming back to the near side. It's Pritchett coming up the near side, line of golf at 20 to 25, 30 stumbles down to 35. Great coverage, two man coverage downfield. I love that and it's funny to think where we were at the beginning of the fourth quarter when we're like, we have no highlights to this game and it did end in very Seattle fashion. What got you going watching this secondary do their thing late in the game? Just the control, the body control, the hand-eye coordination at full speed.

6:24That was a rule of cool interception as well as just a really, really sick, awesome play. Truly, I mean, it was, to me, when we talk a lot about really good defense as we talk about, to me, how in control they can keep their bodies when they're going at full speed and when their brains are moving a million miles an hour, diagnosing things. The sea ox did a lot of different things tonight with pressure. They had to try to just confuse and mix up Drake May. They were playing some cloudier coverages at times. They were rotating players and they were relying on deeper reserve guys because Nick Mnwari was injured. This, to me, was an example of just really talent and depth and really good coaching of technique and just a really, really solid, just relentless effort because it really wasn't like this for a while in this game. Then these defensive backs just started really showing up and Drake May was testing them and did not pass the test there. No, he did not. I think all three were bad decisions.

7:26The first one to jump all to Romeo Dobbs. The third is a disastrous decision. Julian loved me at a nice play on the second one, but maybe got confused and dug this stuff in the play. Yeah, I might argue with you on the second one because I think they were, I think all the pressure they had been sending sort of almost made some of the drop, like some of the maybe faux pressure body positioning of the DBs a little bit confusing for him. It looked like that was like set up by earlier plays that they baited him into that. But yes, it continued. I interrupted you. I was very excited. No, no, you're absolutely right. I was saying like the first and third were bad decisions. The third was like he got fooled. It's going to happen. And it was a great play by Julian love. It's a reminder like how this team has put their secondary together. It's like you watch Requel and leave. You don't have Nick Mnwari and they coach up these guys like Nair and Maya Pritchett and they bring in a guy like Josh Stov from Philadelphia and he makes it happen. What the heck? I want to see highlights. We've been waiting so long for actual game highlights. Let's see that Julian love interception in the fourth quarter.

8:27Third and 14. May. Here comes the rush. Stance throws down the middle. It's a second. To be in love. Make some man miss. Turns up the field. Got some blockers. Catch it. Catch it. Knock down the bounds. Instop the 35 yard line. Julian love has been all over the field tonight. He has been an absolute thorn in break maize behind. And that time for a second pick of the night for the Seattle defense. Yeah Greg. It's cool because it's not that's that was his you know biggest splash play. I would say that we are using in the highlight. But one thing that Julian love really embodied for this team tonight and Nia and my Pritchett did as well with a big stop for no gain in in late in the in the in the game was how well they tackle. And Julian love added a few tackles for loss and a couple of run stuffs was getting into the backfield was playing everywhere was really just marshalling everything keeping everything organized but also very cloudy at times to for the quarterback.

9:30And that's part of it is even when the Patriots are moving the ball and with some of those like swing passes that they hit and some of the short stuff that they were trying to go into get into a rhythm with and mitigate pressure a little bit which they did well through most of the first three quarters of the game and into the fourth quarter. They the Seahawks didn't make anything easy for them because they tackle so well and because they can move these players and get them into the backfield so often and it's not just the DB's it's the it's the big guys to. And I thought the Patriots did a better job than the Super Bowl recognizing blitzes and past protecting for the most part. But Chris Collins worth was going nuts about how the offensive line was better and it was bad like the running game was a disaster they stuck with it the whole game their offense wasn't much better than the Super Bowl. If it was at all these were actually the two worst games by EPA per play of the entire Mike Raeble era the last two against the Seahawks now that's heavily weighted towards the last three drives.

10:31But they had 10 points before those three drives they wasted opportunities they didn't really move the ball the Seahawks with drew lock at quarterback ended up with more yards than the Patriots despite the Patriots finally putting together a good drive in the fourth quarter. And before we kind of get to like the larger picture I do kind of want to start with the end of the game. It was fascinating because on so many way in so many ways this was a week one game both teams looks sloppy. Yeah. The Seahawks were kind of a disaster in terms of their operation tons of priest that penalties two personal foul calls that one at one time I think they had five penalties before the play started in two 15 yard penalties and they also blew their time out early in the second half. So when that final interception happened Jordan it was setting up for wow the Patriots handled the end of the game sequence incredibly well and Drake may overcome these mistakes to beat the the vaunted Seahawks defense at the end of the game on that drive they go for a fourth and two inside their own 35 Drake may runs for the first time as you pointed

11:35out to me in the first half on that play he gets it he runs a couple other times just trying to buy time on that drive he overcomes a third and 19 hits to Hunter Henry for 10 yards and then a fourth and nine getting it to Mac Collins he gets them in easy feel goal position to possibly win the game before they start getting penalties and that's why I have a little problem with Collins were saying the offensive line was playing well because they had penalty after penalty from the Patriots offensive line will Campbell had a couple they had more down the stretch and it was kind of a mistake off and like whose best is going to win and whose best was the Seahawks defense they're they're just like the best group of this game so I give you the choice of your on your list like what is one of the cool plays you want to highlight about the sea acting I'm putting you on the spot but yeah Chen and who also jumps a screen on second down in the third quarter that was sick okay okay oh Chen and who also had a really great game first quarter he totally bricks the rookie tight end Eli Rairden who did have the

12:42first touchdown of the NFL season so good for him and he's a rookie tight end for New England and then that's when that was the sequence that set up with her spoon on the corner blitz too and for me that was like them trying to set the tone and make a statement of intent and the sequence itself was so I guess new vintage of what the Seahawks the Seahawks group is I really appreciated the sequence after a totally disastrous four play 14 net yards possession in the third quarter by Drew Lock in the Seattle offense where it was a tackle for loss by Julian love it was a one yard stop another third down stop and then on the punt team Jay Harba says I'm the OG special teams guy I'm from that family I'm not gonna say you're sitting there I said you're so fired up I'm not here I say you're a rude text um and then they and they sort of scared the Patriots into taking a penalty there that

13:45was really bad for me that was like the two phases that we know Seattle really finds its edges and showing up in a big way and and lifting the floor for for a pretty struggling offense and I'm not saying Drew but Drew Lock played poorly there was some situational stuff that was really really bad some of the pressure pickups were just failure like he's gonna he's gonna want back the times where he was staring at his wristband like seven times and and delay of games and some of the pressure calls they'll probably change some of the pressure call assignments to somebody else because clearly he was not in charge of executing them and a couple of those like the yuck is play like a couple of those plays really got blown up and someone should have picked up that pressure and adjusted beforehand but these two phases are what makes Seattle special I think it sounds so cheesy I know but I would bet that that's the group they wanted on the field at the end of the game was that it's absolutely true and Drew Lock did not have a turnover in this game in the end you know like if you just looked at the box score 16 for 22 for 187 yards and a touchdown they only end up

14:45with 13 points but the key play in the entire game other than the game ending interception is the JSN touchdown and the fact that the Patriots going into half time with the lead with Mike Tomlin in the building you know covering the game for NBC decided to do what Mike Tomlin says you don't want to do and that's living your fears the Patriots were living in their fears they were living on short runs the Bermondry Stevenson they get over midfield and they call a run on fourth and five when you have Seattle you know really you get a couple yards and then you punt at the end of the half and you know who didn't punt on fourth down Mike McDonald he calls a play action pass let's hear it. And it's going to be fourth down in less than a yard Drew Lock is going to go under center high backs behind him Wilson stays in a tail back play fake Drew looks through throws

15:48balls pop. JSN brings it back to 30. 30 points. Who can go in the touchdown C-Hawks JSN and on a quick clean in takes his 45 yards was right through the heart of the Patriot defense and he lands to their heart. Reminds me of a lot of plays from that Super Bowl where they got the linebackers Roberts playing in that case to suck up on the play action fake and on a day where I was like JSN's been kind of quiet until that touchdown he ends up with eight catches for a hundred in 22 yards is a game where neither team went over 300 yards and yet JSN just getting his MVP numbers and I know Mike McDonald didn't have a perfect game but I do think that's a big difference between these two coaching staffs in this game about how they handled those situations one is playing to win they felt like one was playing not to lose. But call is McDonald's to make to go for it on that fourth down. I want to also say it shows he had some faith in Brian Flurry his new offensive coordinator

16:54and in part you could really see why because that looked like a very San Francisco 49ers thing to do. Like not go for it on fourth down Kyle Shanahan almost like just never does the thing but on a short yardage play like that to line up in that formation with the fullback to run like a longer developing play action to have the receiver come off the line of scrimmage as if he is going to go for the deeper concept but then sit right in the soft part of that zone where that system often puts linebackers in absolute hell like and then to have him turn and then have the yards after the catch. I know see how I'm sorry to say this it just looked very like vintage Kyle Shanahan is going to steal your soul in this moment kind of play and I love seeing the cohesion between Mike McDonald actually making that decision and going for it and then trusting Brian Flurry was going to call that type of play obviously he most recently coached

17:57in San Francisco. So to me it was like a lot of callbacks in a cool way that's what I love about football is like we're all products of stuff we did before and that was some of this this game very much I mean you could see it in the game plans for both teams to no doubt and look like Kubeak was with Kyle Shanahan San Francisco see how fans will take anything that looks like the 49ers off and under Kyle Shanahan this season I am thinking of our friends that are waking up in Europe and they're listening to the podcast and they're like wait Sam Donald got hurt also AJ Brown hurt his ankle in this game limped off Mike Ravel would not give any update after the game he was limping off under his own power but that happened that was an important part of the Patriots often struggling down the stretch because at that point in the game he was the guy Drake May was looking to on big third downs he had I believe three catches and I at least two first downs of those three catches maybe all three Sam Darnell leaves with a hip injury and we're excited footballs back we're a

19:02little let down you know when Darnell gets hurt and it's just a lackluster first half and it just feels like a bummer of a kickoff game and we're riding high taping this right afterwards because we got real football in the end and yet it's week one like the Patriots lost the geno Smith last year in week one in the Raiders and went to the Super Bowl the year before Drod Mayo beat Joe burrow and the Bengals in Cincinnati in week one and we know what happened there. Unfortunately, we don't know all the details. But Sam Darnold is as tough as they come. The fact that at first no doctors were looking at him, but he just couldn't walk and had to call to be checked on. And then ultimately went out of the game with the hip injury. Do you have more post game information?

23:23I do. I do. I've got your back here, Greg. So this is per Ian Rappaport and Adam Schefter, Seahawks, head coach Mike McDonald said the team got great news back on Sam Darnold. And doctors do not believe the quarterback's hip is fractured. I said, the medical folks were able to rule out a fracture, more tests coming, but initially positive news for Sam Darnold. But yeah, you hate to see anyone get hurt. Overall, that's positive because a hip fracture would knock you out for a season. Any hip injury is really concerning. And so we just don't know. And that makes it sound more positive. But I've seen this go a million different ways where you think it's good, and then it goes bad or you think it's bad, and then it goes good after the game. I guess my question for the short term at least is just what this team can do. Immediately I see people being like, Drew Locke's not going to be their starter next week. Like who do they go get? And I'm thinking like, are you high? They, Drew Locke has been there for four years.

24:24Plus, like Drew Locke is the guy they chose to be the backup quarterback. They are not going to find someone that they like better than Drew Locke anytime soon. If nothing else, they're going to see what he looks like. And now that we hear, you know, the injury is not a fracture. Obviously we're going to be hopeful that Sam Darnold can get back sooner than later. I want to look at the Seattle schedule in the coming weeks. They play at Arizona, at Washington, home for chargers, and then home for the 49ers. That's a long runway. But the next two weeks, look, if you can beat the Patriots with Drew Locke, you got a real chance to beat the Cardinals and the commanders. This is why you have your backup quarterback. Yeah, because I thought overall the Patriots were throwing some interesting stuff at Seattle in terms of their pressure. I mentioned that before. That's something where they really were able to adjust quickly and take advantage of a quarterback who is working off a wristband. When you're working off a wristband, you get the call in your head. It's usually a shortened version of like whatever the starter would probably have in the

25:28starter would probably have multiple calls and what they call can it. So like take one away essentially or go to a different one. And instead, he's checking on his wristband for code words and colors that tell him what the play is. And that just, it's loads of the whole operation down. I'm not, you know, obviously, you don't hold it against them. That's what backups have to have to do because normally they're running the scout team, not the entire offensive operation. So for me, it's like, okay, if they can clean that up in the long period of time that they have, if Sam Darnold is not ready to go, if they can get their tempo back a little bit, if Brian Flurry feels comfortable moving Drew Locke off the spot a little bit more, a lot of what he was doing was pure dropback. And what was interesting was some of his best throws were out of the pure dropback. Like he had a couple of angled, arm angled throws that were just really solid. There was one over the middle that he just dropped over like a leaping defender and it. He had two or three awesome throws, which is what we'll do. Yeah, which he'll do. But then other times it'll be like, oh, there's a delay of game at the wrong time and

26:29you come away with the field goal instead of actual touchdown. You know, I think it's like, does this man have peripheral vision? Like he never, he is like a battering ram of a quarter back. But he's won some big games. You know what game this reminded me of more than anything was the comeback that he had against the Eagles in prime time in 2023. It's the main reason he's still on the CX, frankly, because you know, Smith got hurt that day. It was a last second, you know, start by Drew Locke and he wins a monster game against a really good team in prime time. It's partly why he's here. And it reminds me a little bit of the week one game the CX had with the 49ers last year where it was just nip, you know, nip and tuck like week one is ugly. And I think it's more important than ever that they found a way to win this game. It's why I think the loss for the Patriots is particularly painful for them. Yeah. And I think you can, especially we don't know, we won't know what the recovery timeline is, but you can win a couple of games with a faster operating Drew Locke to that point. It's just for me, the real problems came from confusion in the operation, like even the

27:32throw where he's like basically half across the line of scrimmage and half behind the line of scrimmage as he throws the ball. And it was, you know, an incomplete pass and sort of looked really odd. And like it could have been a disaster to me, that's just not confident what the play was, honestly, and not not getting the timing right. So I think too that that's something that you help. And I saw that CX fans and some and others were like, well, Jalen Milrose on the on the team too, like what if there's a, he was the emergency quarterback. So he couldn't have come in the game unless there was another injury. So for me, it's like, okay, I think that I think you could patchwork together some things. I don't think you're looking at wanting a long term situation with Sam Darnold out. No, you have a, an offensive line that came into the game, blow in the Patriots off the ball. Jadarian price ends up with 10 catches for 52 yards, but they trusted George Hullani. You know, we kept hearing this throughout the preseason, like George Hullani's going to be a big factor on this team.

28:33And I'm guessing he played much more. I'm checking it as we talk. They split reps almost evenly, but it felt like on the third downs on the short yarded situations, they trusted Hullani. So they end up splitting the carries more. But I think you should be able to run the ball a little bit. You have Cooper Cup on the team who just comes out of nowhere with like one hand. All right, let's let's just think kind of rapid fire any other takeaways from this game. The Patriots missed Travian Henderson. They couldn't run the ball. Romeo Dobbs, as I mentioned, had about as bad a debut as you can possibly have. Here were the three targets. The first one we showed you where he kind of couldn't break up a potential jump ball. And it wasn't a great throw by May, but also like if Dobbs judges it better, attacks the ball. Who knows? Maybe the, you know, at least it's incomplete. He is the target on another interception.

29:35And then more than, more than anything, he drops one of Drake May's better plays. One of the many plays where Drake made God out of pressure. And this time he was rolling to the right. And he had Romeo Dobbs downfield. He said, you know, made it and hit anything downfield. That would have been his one completion. And instead he dropped it and ended a drive that Drake may force the ball on the very next play and wound up being an interception. So that was a big flip for them. So they spend all this money at wide receiver Jordan. And Adrian Brown goes out with an injury in Romeo Dobbs, played less until Brown got hurt than Mac Collins. Because so that kind of showed you where the trust level was at. It wasn't a big difference like they were all playing plenty, but Mac Collins was used more than Romeo Dobbs who just did not look confident in this game. Any other kind of quick hits before we get out of here forever. Yeah, you mentioned at the top Drake May was really effective picking up yards with his legs in the first half. It was one of the things that was moving the ball most effectively. It was keeping the Patriots actually really efficient ahead of the sticks.

30:39He had five carries for 36 yards in the first half. One was on second and nine. It was a 16 yard carry. And then there was a second and one where he got three. So converting those a second and 10 where he gets six. So he sets them up for a good third down. And then he converts another one on a second and seven. For me, it just was helping them stay on time and more efficient. He didn't run at all like design and in terms of like design, not avoiding pressure, not boot like like just it wasn't any of that that we saw in the first half and tell that fourth down pickup where he did run for it. And for me, I was I'm just would like to know where that win or why that went away. And maybe they saw something that certainly I didn't see, but I'm curious because it was effective and it was working and it seemed to settle him and settle the rest of their offense down and get them moving the ball. Yeah. I think it's just they kept getting in bad down and distance situations in the second half. I mean, they they had that feel goal early in the second half where they had good feel position. And then they kept having early penalties.

31:39Well, Campbell had a couple and you know, you can only run so much. And even in the first half, I mean, it was a bad sign. Like they didn't get a pass off to their receivers in the first couple drives because he just had to scramble and then Devon witherspoon is covering anyone like no one could like complete a pass for the first quarter of this game. And I would also say running a draw on third and five only to punt after it. Yeah, just made me want to walk into the ocean. Yes, that was the moment where I thought, oh, they're probably going to lose this game. And to me, it is a bigger loss for the Patriots than it is even a great win for the box. It's a great win. Anytime you come back like that, down 10 points, you got your backup quarter back. It's a quality opponent. That's awesome. The Patriots schedule this year is going to be much tougher. It's the flip side. You have to show that you can close games out like this. Your quarterback comes in second in the MVP last year.

32:41And I think did a lot of good things tonight. If you just erased those interceptions all in the fourth, we're going to go into the third. I thought, you know what, he's actually playing a pretty good game, even though the numbers aren't that good. But for him to make that many errors in one fourth quarter and then for the defense to give up what they did, which wasn't too crazy. And then to just basically not get it done, the bad Omen, Jordan, it's a bad Omen's and signs. We're tracking them week one, baby. We're tracking Omen's and signs all weekend. It is. Yeah, the first play for the CX going for plus 10 yards when the Patriots have the like eight yards in the box. I was like, this is a terrible Omen. You know what's a great Omen is we got through this first recap of the season. Fun game. Good to hear that. Darnell doesn't have a hip fracture. So hopefully he's not out too long. And it doesn't, you know, capsize one of the best teams in the NFL. Patriots will have a long, what is it, 10 days before their week two game.

33:44I always do think it's an advantage to get this first week. Now it's Wednesday, but even the Thursday game, you get a little extra rest. You don't have the short week before it.
