I'm your host and today we're diving into some significant developments happening at the

Department of Labor right now.

Our current Secretary of Labor is Lori Chavez-Duremer and she's facing quite a challenging moment.

According to National today, she returned to Washington DC on March 16th after completing

a year-long America at work tour, but her homecoming hasn't been smooth.

An ongoing investigation into claims of travel fraud and other misconduct has created serious

turbulence in her office.

The investigation has already taken a toll.

According to Politico, Chavez-Duremer's chief of staff, Ji Hume Han and deputy chief of

staff, Rebecca Wright have both resigned under pressure from Trump administration officials.

The Inspector General's investigation has been examining some serious allegations, including

claims that the Secretary and her top aides drank on the job, violated federal rules regarding

taxpayer-funded travel, and even devised official events to facilitate the Labor Secretary's

personal plans.

Additionally, DOL employees have alleged that Chavez-Duremer's aides created a demoralizing

workplace culture, engaged in bullying behavior, and attempted to influence agency grant-making

decisions.

One of her security staffers has also resigned amid the misconduct probe.

What makes this timing particularly challenging is that the Department of Labor faces major

issues around worker rights, wages, and workplace safety.

According to coverage from National Today, this investigation has isolated Chavez-Duremer

within the agency, significantly complicating her ability to push forward with her agenda

and priorities during a critical time.

Meanwhile, on the broader Labor policy front, the Department is advancing several significant

proposals.

According to the National Law Review, the DOL's Wage and Hour division submitted a proposed

rule on joint employer status under the Fair Labor Standards Act on March 16th.

This is meant to guide enforcement and promote uniformity among court decisions nationwide.

Also making waves this week is employer groups push to reform union representation processes.

Thirteen employer associations filed a petition asking the National Labor Relations Board

to revisit a 2023 decision that changed union representation standards.

They're advocating for a return to secret ballot elections as the primary measure of

employee choice.

The labor landscape continues to shift rapidly, and Secretary Chavez-Duremer's ability to

lead through these policy changes while managing this investigation will be closely watched

in the coming weeks.
