Bo Hervat. Former Vancouver Canucks captain has been named the captain of the New York Islanders as of this morning. He's been there three and a half seasons. 271 games with the Isles, including postseason. Anders Lee had been the captain of that hockey club for eight years. He replaced John Tveris after Tveris left for the Leafs and free agency. You remember?

4:04I can't believe that's that long ago. That did all. And so needing a new captain, the Isles looked around and said, well, who's like a mature old soul, been here a bit grown up, worker B, it's Bo Hervat. And been a captain of a previous NHL team. And now he in Trevor Lyndon, a captain of the New York Islanders. There's been some shared though. Mike Peck, of course, was captain of the Isles. Former Vancouver Canuck. Brian Cable was. Is the letter there once upon a time? He was captain for a year, I think. And then how about this, everybody? The Rangers Islander's rivalry is a good one. And it's not like Bo Hervat and JT Miller have not crossed swords as members of the Rangers and Islanders respectively. But now they'll do so as captains.

5:07JT, of course, is the captain of the New York Rangers. They named him captain going into last season after his half season with the blue shirts. Yeah, we sort of underlines again the poll question a little bit. And in that, you know, JT Miller was at obvious reason as to why he would leave. But Bo, you know, and not even the should. Like, what if they just didn't? What if they were like, this is an amazing guy. He's a great player. We're not trading this guy away. He's a perfect captain. Would they be in this same place? I'm not arguing they're a Stanley Cup contender. But there's a big difference between being a 20-second place team in the Isles and being 30-second by a country mile. Would they be stuck in the Mucky middle still, maybe? Like, I don't think this is necessarily a, they missed on a chance to be good. I'm saying they may have dodged a bullet here because they may have just been good enough.

6:07It's fair if they re-kept a little whore, Vat, that they're still in the Mucky middle. So it winds up being a game of what I could have shut up because we have no idea how the dominoes would have fallen thereafter. Of course, the Kinox made a surprise playoff run after trading bohore, Vat. Which wet the whistle of everybody, including Jim Rutherford and Patrick Alvino. No, we're not rebuilding around here. We made the second round of the playoffs. We were a game away from going to the western final. So you wouldn't have Philopronic, right? Because it was the first round pick you got from the islanders that you wound up using to Detroit for Philopronic. I'm not sure much was gained or lost with the Anthony Bolvillet. No. Experiments. I think we can really need to re-lead again.

7:09You would have been light on top pair right shot defense. Minus Rona can less you went about finding a different way to find a top pair right shot defenseman, which is one of the scariest commodities in the NHL, right? Especially a guy who can help the scoring in the offensive attack as Rona Caz and quarterback of power play. You wouldn't have Ratu here, but I mean, Ratu hasn't moved the needle. I would have been quite interested to see what JT Miller would have fetched on the open market. Trade market that is at that time. At that time. Al of I mean, few outstanding runs and they traded him at low value and they traded him with baggage. Well, with baggage and of course, needing his, you know, no move close to be accommodated. Yeah, 15 months later, there was baggage and his game had receded.

8:11So it was yeah. I mean, you get a bigger haul probably don't you? Yeah, I think so. I think so. But would it have been a big enough haul to convince Quinn Hughes? And that is the big unknown here, right? No, I don't think so. Because for many of the dias, Caz and Quinn Hughes just wants to play with his brothers. And now he's slow playing Minnesota. And he's going to wind up being a New Jersey. That's a very good Minnesota team and he's slow playing it. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I don't think it changes the arc of Quinn Hughes. And because of that, like, I voted yes. I think they would still be rebuilding. Yeah, yeah. I mean, the answer for me is yes, they absolutely should be. But what, you know, the butterfly effect here, what are you, what are you, could it should have? I'm going to say no. I'm going to say no, but they're, that they're, you know, Seattle Kraken level and still hoping. Okay. Mike will break the tie here in a second.

9:11But think of the things that would have been avoided, everybody. Yes. Oh my goodness. Because the Knax basically became a laughing stock, not just in the National Hockey League, but around pro sports. I mean, they were crossing over and getting more mainstream sports coverage. About all the dysfunction that was at play with JT Miller and Elias Patterson, because their principles, Jim Rutherford in particular, were speaking freely about it, even as the players were lying through their teeth about how there was no quarrel. Here's another reason why I think they're not rebuilding right now is I think they're better last year and the year before. And I don't think that they, it probably leads to this management, previous management group still being here right now. Oh, oh, and then they're not saying no, Moss, they're not running up the white flag. They were, there's no question that given a glimmer of hope,

10:12Francesco Ackolini was going to try for the playoffs. That's what I'm talking about. So that's why I think they probably aren't. But again, I still don't think it affects Hughes and so Hughes is out the door. Yeah. I still not sure you're that much bit like I think. Well, the should again, the should with they should. Well, I mean, God, that, I mean, but the would that would have still been a reality hitting you square in the face that your best ever defenseman wants out and that you're not trading him for. We're rebuilding on the fly with Z Boyle. Well, no, but Blake, but Blake, like here's the thing. In a world where, okay, Horvath's there instead of Miller and you're better than what you were showing. If Hughes still wants out, there, I don't think there's a lot of teams out there that are going to give you NHL currency for Queen Hughes in season, right? I still think you're looking at a futures package for Hughes, which is what the Minnesota

11:15package mostly, what I mean, Rossi was NHL currency made NHL player. William and Ogren, as we know, were very young and weren't necessarily the sorts of players that a contending team wanted to carry in forward roles, right? Yeah. Because your point is, and it's a good one, they probably wouldn't have traded Queen Hughes in that moment because if they're pseudo good, again, not good, but pseudo good, they're probably holding on to Hughes through last year's playoffs and probably looking to deal them now, right? Like the wilder. Or you're still trading them, but again, for mostly a futures package, like guys whose brighter days are ahead of them like William and Ogren, even if you get a Rossi equivalent somewhere else, I would think at least it's odd to cheer against or cheer for the trading the way of a good player and a great guy like Bo Horvath, but I don't see think it, they may have dodged a bullet by

12:15doing so. I think so. Okay, Mike, break the tie. I'm yes, Blake Snow, you say? I think they'd still be rebuilding actually. I changed my answer in the last five minutes. Demko. He was that good? He was that good? No, I was looking up facts online. Oh, okay, goodness. Demko would still be injured, right? And good point. I can't see PD being bad for two years because he was upset about JT. Yeah, the whole there's a mean guy, bully in the room can't explain two and a half years. I was about to say PD would have been better if JT had left, but I don't think it's it's not certain that that's the case, but I think there was a there was a non-zero possibility that that's the case. I haven't been that last two years, but it's in the past. I'm calm when when fresh mine. I'm excited to play hockey again. Needless to say that clip didn't do well on social media when posted. You feel the excitement when you when you say the word excitement and are almost frowning as you say it that will grab people's attention. I mean, I don't know who's talking to him. Whether anybody talks to him. Whether he listens to anybody. Any guidance. Because there was an opportunity today in your first media session to set the whole world

15:29differently. Absolutely. If you can muster. You can fake it for 90 seconds. I think the whole scrum was six minutes and change. Yeah, I've told us. But even just 90 seconds of that. If you can fain legitimate excitement for 90 seconds. Honestly, I think the whole market exhales for a bit. I mean, ultimately the on ice is going to dictate everything. But I think he buys himself some breathing space in training camp and preseason. If he does that. I don't know whether it's within CMax purview to pull him aside and say, look, Lys, Dower and Sower doesn't play very well with our fans. Yeah. Maybe you can as Blake says, muster a different attitude, a different energy. When you're speaking to our fans, you may hate the people in your midst. You may dislike the questions that they've asked. Some of the analysis they've had of your games,

16:31some of the jokes and potshots. I get it. You're well within your rights to hate all that. But you've got to look past them and understand you're speaking to our public, our fans, your fans. And like, Besser meets the media later is talking about fresh start, clean slate for everybody and things like that. And yet, Lys wants to continue to carry the baggage forward. I mean, again, he's got some of the most powerful agents in hockey. I don't know what that group, Barry Berson does in terms of media training with their clients or just pointers or helping out their Q rating within a given market. I would have to think that's part of the program for an agency that that powerful got that kind of money. And if you're on the beach, if you're on the brink of saying that's just not his personality, go look at his rookie season, his sophomore year, smiles joking with the media, high energy, higher energy anyway.

17:41The only reason why we're frustrated by it is we have seen him not be like this. Like, it doesn't make any sense that home opener at Roger Serena. Where he scores the beautiful goal and the crowd is chanting his name, just roaring for this new Swedish superstar kid who had just arrived. And he gets caught looking up at the scoreboard, like taking it all in and breaking into a smile on the bench. Like his first year, he was a delight here. He wins the Calder trophy and he's got it front of mine. The mindset to say, well, okay, this is great and all, but we just lost Jason Boshford, a reporter who I met this year on the beat and who was always very support. And he makes it about Bosh and Bosh is passing as opposed to, you know, classy moves. And we're sitting there going, oh my god, this kid, he's so conscientious, he's so this, he's so that.

18:44Told the story many times, but when he was drafted in Chicago and he was brought over to our table, this is his first interview, right, in the Vancouver market. And PR at the time said to us, oh, he's a little bit shy and his English isn't maybe quite as good as what you're accustomed to with Swedish players. And he sits down between Blake and I and we're making small talk in the first thing out of his mouth. He makes a joke and a good one at that. And when they're like, he's getting shy. He's already cracking jokes. We put him on there and he was great. And I get why he has covered up. There's been a lot of water in the bridge, but my point is today is a fresh start. And he would have been given grace and he would have bought himself time and space with because he still has a significant faction of the front of the fan base who are with him and want to see the Renaissance somebody and pin the tail on all the other donkeys whether that's JT whether that's talk it whether that's Rutherford, now, Vene. KG green on Twitter says it's PDSD.

19:52Well, can I be supporter disorder? I still believe this KG. Yeah. Yeah. Anyways, if he is getting good advice, he's not listening to it, at least with regards to yeah, taking on this topic touchy as it may be. Philopronik is channeling his Kevin B. Exa. Remember, Juicy was going down with the ship when that 2011 cadux team began to falter and began to be dismantled. I'm not running away from the sea. That's right. He said almost match. He said I'm going down with the ship. And of course, he ultimately moved on to in 2015 in the trade to the ducks. These things have a way of changing that resolve that going down with the ship has a way of changing as the losses mount. But look, we don't hear from Philopronik a lot, but we knew he wanted to be here. His agent reiterated that countless times during the summer on social media. And Philopronik was back. And remember, he was sort of being auditioned as team

21:00captain by the last management group when last season ends. So there he was today at the Milford meeting the media as a veteran player, best defenseman on the team. And he says, no, I'm not running away. Here's Ronik. I mean, I commented here and signed a contract here. I knew I wanted to be here and I'm excited for it. So always said, Vening is really important, but I just don't want to run away right away. So I think we can build something special here and that's the goal. You know, when we've heard that Philopronik's family are quite happy here and that's outstanding. I mean, gosh, it's awesome city, right? Awesome place to live, especially for a European. Because he had known Detroit previously and one of these things is not like the other. But the right now part, I think, is also important, right? Yeah, he'll want to see improvement, he'll want to see direction in order to keep up that love. He's 28. So there's two ways to look

22:03at that. You could say, like, these are his best years right now and he's playing them in a rebuild rather than playing them on a contender where he could be like a big force on a contender. But I'll say this the other side of that is he's 28 now. Three years from today, they're showing up for another training camp. He's 31 older on the wrong side of 30, but not washed up at 31. And that's a team that you're probably, you're hopefully saying, yeah, could contend for a playoff person. And in the interim, you're playing the line share of minutes, right? You're a most important player on the team. You're probably going to get a lot of the power play time. We see how that goes. Was he, we come on up now that he's committed to on the long term. And you get a chance to be the guy, the man on that blue line and in that room. And incidentally, that year that I'm talking about would still mean he's got what four years after that. Yeah. And I got to say, Blake, I know there are a lot of connox fans who just like,

23:05oh, why won't he wave his no trade clause? Imagine what we could get. Imagine what we could get for him. That would really ignite the rebuilds. And I understand that. Like it, it's, it's a totally fair shout. It's also a fair shout to see. Well, this guy actually still be playing at that level and the contributor that he is now when we're finally good. Yes, very fair questions to ask. But there's a big part of me. And maybe this is old school. It's, if you stick it through the tough times and you do manage to journey long enough to be there when the good times arrive, that has got to be incredibly meaningful as an athlete. I'm a little bit more of the Michael Jordan era like, no, no, you stick with your team and you fight through the pistons and everything else that's put in your way until you get to the mountaintop.

24:06You don't go about shopping for teams and free agencies in vrea trade requests. Well, I mean, it just wasn't a thing. You like, you didn't, again, tall poppies, you didn't, you didn't make yourself the storyline by demanding that sort of thing. Those guys were ostracized. Those few players that did, you know, ask for these sorts of things, they, it was, they were villainized. And still are in hockey culture to be degreeed, right? Yeah. I mean, hey, like if the canucks get to a point where they're in a west or a cup final, again, with Phil Bronick still on the blue line, like, I will tip cap to him first and foremost for going through all this to get to that other side. But that's too amazing story. To the critics side, though, like right now, a 28 year old under contracts, cap certainty, like what would you, what would you do? Contract to what would you get for that player?

25:08You know, an amazing hall, especially with first round picks being devalued somewhat, right? Yeah. This new rising cap environment, especially with prospect being a little bit devalued in this. So I do get the frustration, but players, if players are humans, there are a lot to, there are a lot to, you know, negotiate for this kind of leverage in their contract. And he's utilized him while you may hate the BoHurva trade and it was a terrible one by that previous regime. The Philip Rona acquisition was a good one. Yeah. He's been a good player. I mean, if you move them today, you'd get way more than what the Red Wings got for him. He was on a better contract back then. They resigned them to a good deal. A deal where he's absolutely not even eight million a year blade. Seven point two. Oh, it's gorgeous. Put it in the Louvre that contract. Yeah. Extension. So we'll see. What I hope for his sake is he stays healthy because he's got he's going to play a lot of minutes, I think, right? And the connoxer. Yeah. They may be a tough watch at the best of times this year if they lose Philip Rona. They're

26:12going to be a tough watch. Which is why I wouldn't be surprised that they put a big body like a big body player alongside him if they can. The guy that can like would you be surprised if it's a Lexiac and Ronic. Like a guy that can block shots instead of Ronic. You know, like, you know, that's the guy that's going to put his body in the line so that Ronic can skate freely with the buck. I don't want to see Ronic parallel blocking shots at the point. Sometimes you have to get it, but that's a good question. Blake, I actually hadn't considered that a whole lot. How are their defense pairs going to shake out? I think I was more, thinking minutes in total. Well, we're taking forward lines. We've talked forward lines a little bit. But yeah, Alexiac or William, I think, are the two candidates, right? And I do think you like the the, remember when he was with you and he played with Ronic and we're like, why are they

27:12loading up a top pair? And then it became on trend in the national hockey league that you don't saddle your best offensive defenseman with a granite block defender who can't handle the puck. If you're going to get the best out of them, then the guy on the other point needs to be able to handle the puck and play the offensive game as well. So just on that alone, I think I'd prefer to see William there. Also, you've got a big stake in William now and you want to see him run with it and earn the contract. Live up to the contract and score the points and ultimately be your power play quarterback. Now, Alexiac, you know, you might say, that's a lot of minutes for Alexiac. And last year he did dip to 17 minutes of game, but that ended a streak of five seasons in a row of a minimum of 1845 a night. Yeah. We had talked about that. He had been used as a second pair, if not first pair guy and all special teams and all that's like, he was minute munching for some of us. And even for Dallas in his last year. Brock Besser ended last season with 22 points,

28:1510 goals in his final 23 games. He was really good after the Olympic break and he needed to be because he was going about salvaging a poor first three quarters of the season. And why did Besser take off a little? Well, coincided with the bro line. Besser Rossi Ogrin. They started to get very strong play from Marco Rossi at center ice. They started to get better play from Liam Ogrin on the wing as the young man was figuring out how to put all his tools to good NHL use. And Brock was a beneficiary. And as we know, you know, Brock's a pretty heavy offensive player. He's still a good shooter. He's smart in terms of space. He knows where to be. He's a better distributor of the puck, especially in the half court. Then some would give him credit for. So I wasn't surprised that when two other players on a line were going offensively that Brock

29:18was able to be a good complement to those guys. Here's Besser from this morning saying he's said to do pick back up where where they left off. It feels pretty good. Like every since the Olympic break last year, I thought I had a great second half. And you know, I was kind of going into that second half being like, okay, like enough some often. You know, I thought I played way better that. So I'm just trying to build off that. Continue to build my game. And you know, I just got to make sure I have confidence in myself and confidence I can go out there and make plays. And I mean, we're talking about a leus is key rating with the public Blake. And of course, Brock says much, much higher. But you know, there were two things there that endeared him to fence that he led everybody into the I came out of the Olympic break. One enough is enough. It's relatable to a cannot expect. We're all sitting there saying the

30:21same thing. Like, God, where's Besser gone? Like, come on. Like, all right, we realized the season's gone to pot. Yeah, okay, there you miss some time early on this. But Besser is a better player than this. He recognized that. He's willing to share that. And then he goes on to talk about confidence and how big confidence is for his game. Again, letting the fan into his world a little bit. Here's what's important for me. And also, like, if we're in to compare again, like, this is a guy that is a low talker. He's he's very cooperative with the media. But this is not an exuberant personality. But he he can recognize the moment here. A the golf tournament undefeated season so far. Like Brock Brock is is willing to play ball with him. But this is his his on his favorite thing either. But he figures it out. He knows what to say and how to say it honestly. I mean, he should be he should teach a session for some of them. Yeah. He's he's figured it out. And again,

31:29it builds confidence for the fan base. And this team is going to need to sell. Right. Joy and happiness in a different way than wins and losses because there won't be a lot of wins. So, again, another reason why some players should probably be spoken to about how they deliver messages. Right. Because they need to be the public's best friends. Exactly. You are in a different realm than where you have ever been. Yeah. Right. Your managers know what your coach knows it. Now it's important that the players know it. And look, we know the leadership group is getting some help after they trade away. Captain Quinn Hughes. And unless we forget alternate captain Tyler Myers last year as well, Myers was a big part of the leadership group in the room. Veterans Brendan Galger and Luke Shen entered the chat. Shen for a third time as a Vancouver canaka. One year deal, but he's got a full no move. So, you know, he's going to be here all year. And his reemergence in connects colors at the millford. Well, that had best

32:37best her laughing. Luke, shit, he just can't quit the connects. I mean, this guy just loves Vancouver. He can't stay away. But, uh, no, he's great. I mean, you know, he's he's already pushing us hard in practice. He's he's pushing us pushing guys in the gym. And, you know, he's just a guy that comes to their rank and he's just a pro every day. It's a it's a guy we need in our room. Yeah. Did I detect an A bomb there? Oh, he's becoming Canadianized. I think his Vancouver wife is Brock's been here long enough. He's from Minnesota. He's close enough. Yeah, Minnesota is yeah, a bomb. E H 11th. Yeah, exactly. I have a question. Oh, you in the back. Whoa. Whoa. Hey, you just enter jacks like that. Yes. This is important. Hmm. Was that a conucks player smiling? Yes. Yes. I'm not used to this. I'm understanding the side. He was smiling. Hey, we're happy. Hey, love that. Y'all okay.

33:42Look, it's just the simple, uh, Brock is going to go down as an all time beloved Vancouver conuck. And I don't know where his career is going to go from here in terms of stats and particularly given if he's another guy who said, no, I want to stay through the tough times. But what it's all said and done, like if he just keeps on keeping on as this guy in front of the cameras and the microphones and the work that he does away from the rank, no matter what the stats say, he is going to be beloved above and beyond that. Just because of the person he is and the person we've gotten to know here, it feels like the game has gotten too fast for him. I get it. It's seemingly every year that takes place like, but I'll say like he's again a little younger than you might think in your mind's eye because he's been sitting here so long, but he plays the entire year almost as a 29 year old. Yeah. So as long as you've got that two in front of you, I think you've got the ability to put up career high still. It's going to be tough on this team. Just amongst the

34:43least skilled versions of the connects that he has played on. But he's also a really smart and cerebral guy and I think he's got the ability to be more efficient in his movement on the ice to put himself in better positions to score. He's seen it. Good hockey IQ there. There was from the second he stepped on the ice out of North Dakota. And I think he's also smart enough to say, I need to work on this. Maybe get lighter. Get quicker with the like all those certainly he's not going to be a faster skater. He's not going to be leaving breakouts necessarily. But I think he can be quicker again. And every coach and every sport will tell you the difference between quick and fast. Those are two different attributes. And I think he can be quicker. I think there's a way for him to be quicker. So I think he can be a 30 goal score. Like I'm not writing that off. Meaning either. Certainly not in his career, but maybe even this year. I think he can be a 30 goal score again. Well, if he's spent a lot of time like if the Rossi, Ogrin, Besser Line stays intact and chemistry develops even further than yes, becomes the focal point of that line for the final as a finisher.

That part of it didn't work out, but I still think you can revalue from the early years of this Besser contract. If he plays with skilled players and he holds his own and I certainly have no issues with his ability to hold his own in the half court, as you say. It's not like he's going to be leading any rushes. You know, I mean, be the trailer on if they have

Yeah. Like that's not helpful. So there's a couple of games. Knax won the second one. 5-2. Adam Novotny, Braden Coots, Brooks, Rogowski. Loading up on the top line. Yeah. And of course, Rogowski typically play center and it's going to play center. I suspect in the OHL again this year. They look fantastic. Factored into three of the Knax 5 goals. Novotny's got an

38:55outside chance of breaking camp with the big club for that little look see before being dispatched back to junior, the Peterborough Pets. And that would be he assigned a contract. Like he is not going to be an NHL player. He is either going to be a major junior player or an NHL player. Of course, heavy, heavy favorite to be a major junior player. Heavy, heavy favorite to be a big part of the Czechia world junior team. But he would be a candidate next year for the American hockey league. So a bunch of things that have to happen. He would have to be amazing in preseason obviously in training camp. The other players would have to maybe be less awesome like in a bad way that the Knax are not worried about losing the player on waivers. Maybe going down to Abbotsford or injured to or injured to yeah. So my and I would say I would put very large sums of money that he doesn't make the NHL team pass nine games. But it's one of those things where the Knax might

39:55very well want to give him the taste. Like the intentional we're only going to we're not even to keep you for eight games. You're going to play three and head out. Like Kudts last year. Yeah. Like Kudts last year. Like we're just going to give you the taste. This is what it looks like. This is the speed. This is where you need to get to. And then we're sending you back. So it might be one of those intentional cups of coffee rather than oh, can he make the team? Is he going to stay with the team? I don't think it's going to be there's no point. Like why are you wasting a year of Adam Novotny by doing that? Kudts is also trying to make the team. And Kudts may have a better chance than any of the player about Kudts at South was there and yeah. But at 19 year old, Braden Kudts has a few more well, one more option available to him. He could be a Vancouver Knax for the second consecutive year coming out of camp. He could be an HL player because you are now allowed new rules starting this year in the NHL. You were allowed to put one 19 year old prospect in the American hockey league from major junior. You're always allowed with the

41:01European guys, but major junior 19 year old. So he could start with the Abbotsford. Knax, I would anticipate he's playing pro hockey somewhere, Braden Kudts. I'm not sure how much left he has to prove at the major junior level. We saw him last year once the trade was made from a Seattle outfit to a very good Prince Albert team. I mean, he was exceptional when surrounded by good talent, but he's also a candidate for Canada's world junior team. In fact, there's a halfway decent chance that Caleb Melhotra and Braden Kudts play big roles on the Canadian world junior team this year in Edmonton and Red Deer. We'll see. Regalci is going back to the OHL and that is committed to university. The year after at Michigan State. So he's unsigned. I would suspect. Brue Bigbrook gets the full season. Loved that he had to say though, but the world genius because he's an underager. He's not 19 year old player, but look great at the US world junior summer shop. And of course he's got down. He's got the full grown body. He was like,

42:06no, no, no, I'm like, I was beyond realistic in his mind. He is determined to make this team. And that's great. He's created a dangling carrot for him to go and chase. That's amazing. And then Benich Schimmick. And we talked to him about him on Friday, but we saw Dave Hall, one of our prospects, Guru's tweeting about him. Benich Schimmick was one of my top targets from the NCAA crop, 2026. He quickly eased his way into the Abbey lineup. It was 11 points in 13 games in his first professional taste of hockey. And now showed off some stuff at this weekend's prospect showcase. I said it last year, I say it again, I won't be shocked to see him earn an NHL deal this year. He's on an NHL deal now. His goal, I mean, this is what you ask. He's a 23 year old. He's over age for this tournament, if you will, or this showcase. You want him to

43:09look like he's one of the better players on the ice. He did. Like you like that was like that was the guy who was like, he made it look easy. His goal. A little shoulder fake got the guy to bite and then walked in alone and and and sniped it. It's great. And look, we anticipate that there is going to be opportunity on the wing for the Vancouver. Canucks this year. I think they probably feel good or as good as a rebuilding team can feel with their top six wingers. Of course, Besser, Ogrin, Debrusk, Carlson, Drew O'Connor is going to play in that role. I would suspect as well in a top nine role. I will see what Paul Conner can do coming over from New Jersey as a free agent. Remember, Brendan Gallagher was getting healthy, stretched by a Montreal Canadian seam that wasn't exactly chalk a block with great offensive talent up and down the forward ranks last year. Gallagher, I suspect, is going to get every opportunity early. And then Max Sasson, who they want

44:17on the wing. They think he's better on the wing than at center ice. But Blake, we've talked about injury, ineffectiveness, veterans who may not play every game. Perhaps a Jake Debrusk trade comes at some point early in the season. So there is going to be opportunity for the best wingers at the Abbotsford level to play national hockey league games this year. And that's exciting in terms of a rebuild because, well, look, I know there'd be a segment of the fan base that still wants to see our steep bains. Of course, the local kid from Surrey Punjabi kid. Time you'll there got a cup of coffee last year. He may get some of that opportunity. Everyone seems to be charmed by tray fixed. Well, in ski, the five foot seven dynamo, uh, minor league, uh, journeyman pro, who may get some looks there. Everybody wants Latvian Mackie to get looks there and score goals because the first round. But don't discount like a Bennett, uh, Bennett, Shimmick or some of the other guys who may not be as

45:21well known. In Kanox annals and with new coaching stuff there who are on their way in an up, an ascending with new coaching stuff there. There will be no, um, incumbent leaders, you know, like there's going to be fresh eyes on everybody. And I think there's going to be positions and, and you know, power play spots earned. So if a guy like Shimmick just comes in and he's just better than a guy like Leckarmackie, well, he might get the spot in the power play. Leckarmackie doesn't. And speaking of prospects and Dave Hall, a reminder, the black fish, uh, prospects podcast with Tyson Cole and Dave Hall. And it is going Mondays this year and they're doing it live. Uh, the Edmonton Oilers needless to say with two of the best players in the world. The Vancouver canucks are right smack dab in the middle. They rank 16th in the national hockey league with projected because they're not forced to disclose revenue use of $230,000,000. Not bad, not bad, given their prowess on the ice. Wow, really? We don't, we don't know where they will go now because it's a stated rebuild, right? All the season ticket money was in last year. I am actually interested to know like, and I'm sure they will say, oh, it's over 90%. It's always over 90%. But what the season ticket renewals are like for this year? Because I think one of the

47:25Acqueline eFirs was all as soon as we start saying rebuild people are going to start bailing out of season tickets. But there was another school of thought is no, no, just be honest with me. I will sign up and support this because this is the proper way of building in the national hockey league. If you just dare utter the word and start behaving like that team, a rebuilding organization, which of course for some is 12, 13 years overdue. The bottom line is when the connox revenue years are of that level right in the middle of the packet, what, 234, even on $104 million cap, which they're not spending to, that should absolutely be a very profitable organization, right? Blake, like your other costs aren't a hundred and 13 million over the course of the year and the to get to break even. No, you should still be making a good amount of money. If those revenues are anywhere close to Acqueline, the other thing to consider here is

48:29the Canadian Stanley Cup drought, three of the top four teams on that list, Canadian. Now three of the bottom six are also Canadian in the Canada. In the United States, it's down the tiers of, but they make the most amount of money. You'd think one of those three that's cooking with gas financially would be able to somewhat buy, especially Matt now, and as we talked about, we're almost open market now because of the cap is going to be accelerating away from where most clubs feel comfortable filling it to the to the brim. Well, do you see the Columbus' and yeah, and the Himes at the bottom at less in terms of revenues. But even some of that middle class, you know, like Pittsburgh's a proud hockey city. Are they going to spend to the cap? I don't know. Fenway sports group. It's a pretty big ownership group. Yeah, it's true. The ownership would help there. But you know, there's others doing that middle class. My point is the rich should be able to outspend. Now that wasn't always the recipe for success even in the old NHL, but

49:32I don't know. There's going to be not a lot of excuses left for those rich teams at the top to spend, spend, spend and try to be winners. Yep. So training camps begin this week, and all eyes are on the RFAs that are unsigned. Here's who we're looking at around the national hockey league who was without contract as training camps get going Wednesday. There are reports today of good movement between Cutter Gochi and the Anaheim Ducks after they terminate the contract of Chris Crider. He signs with the Montreal Canadian. So clearly looking for a fit and Crider's been goal scorer and power play merchant. And we all know how much trouble the Habs had scoring in the conference final last year. Nikeshian and Carolin is interesting. If he doesn't report, he has asked for a trade. Boy, if you're Columbus, can you Fantilly? I mean, he's supposed to be one of the pillars, right? I think you've got to get that

50:34deal done. Apparently people aren't worried about Edmondson and Detroit that it's all going to work out there. And then you got a couple of Montreal Canadians. Well, bolder sign. He's signed late yesterday. Okay. And Jack. I have not heard anything about it. Okay. But I mean, one of the Jack is not like the other. Yeah. 1:03:11jumping on point that you know training camp is right around the corner. So prospects, games over the weekend, the Millford today. Guys are doing some physicals. And then, yeah, they will head to Penticton on Wednesday and hit the ice for the first time at the South Oconnogative Center on Thursday. So it's hockey season. Right. And we heard from Elias Patterson, Brock Bester and Philip Ronick earlier in the program. Let's start with EP 40 because while we heard him say he's not been placed with this level of performance over the last couple of years. And this year is going to be different, different. And Mike said, is that a list from last year's Millford? I can confirm fresh clip, but same old sound bright. You know, I just, I don't know what he could say a couple of days before training camp that would appease the bulk of Kanoch fans. Like his actions have to speak to themselves. And I've watched him a couple of these informal summer

1:04:11skates. And he's not alone. You know, did he go coast to coast and score highlight real goals that, you know, only the people in the building saw? No. Would you like to have seen some of that, maybe? But again, it's glorified, Ginny, just with a really high payroll. And I'm not going to judge him on what I saw, whether it was Roger Zarina or Britannia. But boy, on Thursday, you want to believe that he is going to sort of back up whatever it was that he said today about not being happy with the last couple of seasons. Now, we know what he looked like three years ago when he was 102 point guy. We haven't seen that player since he signed the contract. So, and I, he said what he said today, again, you take it with a grain of salt, but he's on the clock starting on Thursday. And I do think it's going to be fascinating to see that if we see any sort of glimpses in Pentectin of the guy that took the hockey world by storm not that long ago, but at the same time,

1:05:12like, you know, you're looking at the 27 soon to be 28 year old Alias Pederson who, you know, not an old man, but not young by hockey standards anymore. Did you say not that long ago, but God does feel like I know. I've only seen the one clip, but I'll I'll I'll put it up to you because you were there for the whole moment or the whole few minutes that you had with him. Like the clip does not show any smile does not show any weight lifted. They're undefeated this year. Was there any levity from the player at all during the few minutes that you were there because you said that what can he say? You're right. The words, not so much. The how can absolutely be different. That can be and people can say that's not how he is bullshit. We saw him as a rookie. He smiled a lot. So I'm not buying that as a response of, oh, that's just the way he is. It's not the way he was. And when that disappeared, coincides with when his play went down. So that's my

1:06:14criticism, Jeff, is the how he said things rather than the what he said. Yeah, he stood in and answered questions for six minutes. You know, were there moments of levity? Not really. It kind of felt like it was, you know, his duty to he had been asked by the media relations staff. He hasn't spoken here since he arrived back in town. And other guys have after these informal skates, but he has been given his freedom to come and go as he pleases. I think he knew that he had to do this. Did he look delighted, Blake, to see me and other media guys that he hadn't seen for a bunch of months. I cannot say that he did. But he stood in there for, as I said, six minutes and answered questions about his summer and about, you know, the change in management, things that he hasn't addressed because all of this happened after the end of the season. So, yeah, I mean, it kind of went as I expected. And in and out on to a day of golf on the golf course. And again, I just hope

1:07:19that he's in the right head space when it matters most. And that's starting on Thursday at training camp. We knew that Philip Rohnick wanted to stick out the rebuild or at least for now via his agent on social media over the course of the summer. But we got it from the horse's mouth. He says he's not running away, Jeff. In fact, the Philip Rohnick press session for us. Yeah. Well, it was if PD stood in for six minutes, I believe I looked at my phone. It was two minutes and 45 seconds, which felt like an eternity. I'm sure to Philip Rohnick, but that was sort of the the money clip of it all was that he's not fling. He's in no hurry to flee this last place sinking chip. And he's you know, signed the contract committed here and can see brighter days in the future. Again, nobody has played a game. Nobody has suffered any losses yet. And so optimism abounds even here in Vancouver for a 30 second place team. But you know, it's across the league and across the board.

1:08:19Let's take the temperature again at the 20 game mark and it Christmas time and all of those types of things. But yeah, Philip Rohnick seemed like he was in a relatively good mood. And yeah, is that like this is where he wants to be in the here and now. And again, we'll see if circumstances dictate otherwise as the season unfolds. And Brock Vassar, he was happier to see the media. I'm sure right. Brock's always been. Yeah. I mean, of the three of the three guys that we talked to this morning, Brock seemed to be receptive to the idea of standing in there and holding court and talking about all things Vancouver, Connux. I got a chuckle out of it when I said Luke Chan for a third time. And he had a laugh and said, yeah, you just can't keep him away. And he said, Luke's basically an athletic trainer at this point as well and an assistant coach, which is sort of, you know, that's an underrated part of what he will bring is the work ethic and the behind the scenes stuff. I mean, I've said, I think he should play 40 games of all goes well.

1:09:24Like if you need him from more than 40 games, something has gone wrong. But it's the other stuff that you're also paying Luke Chan for, right? Well, and look, Luke's been here three times now. And Brock, obviously, the longest ten years. Yeah. He's been here through all of them. They also are both Ben Hankinson guys. So they're tied to an agent there and who doesn't love Luke Chan? Like honestly, and Brock said, like he's already, you know, pushing guys in the gym and holding guys to account. And exactly to your point, that is why the Vancouver Connucks were open to the idea of a third stint for Luke Chan that, you know, and I'm with you Blake. Like there's a role for him. But I'm not sure that role is as an every single night defenseman top one of your top six guys. But he can still pay massive dividends with the work that he puts in a practice holding guys to account, you know, around the rink, sure, but on road trips and team dinners and all that

1:10:24kind of stuff. Luke Chan has been there. He has done that. He has seen this league inside and out. And I think he understands why he was brought back once again. So Brock, he's pretty happy that he's here. You know, the same can go for Brendan Gallagher, who doesn't have the same ties, obviously, to the organization, Jamie Alexiack by all accounts, high character individual as well. And so it was pretty obvious that the sedans and Ryan Johnson so much of what they did in this off season was about reshaping, resetting the culture. And now we'll start to see ultimately what that looks like as the guys hit the ice here for the start of a new season. It was 22 points and 10 goals in the final 23 games last season for Brock Bacer. He was darn good after the Olympic break. Jeff, did you get any sense why his season turned around and his outlook on this here, coming off what was a strong finish? Yeah, I mean, I think a lot of it, Matt, you have to go back to healthy Marco Rossi, right? And it's just something that the connox didn't have. They acquired him.

1:11:24He was coming off a length of injury. He wanted to play. He pushed through, but it was I think eight games right around Christmas and got hurt again. And then they sat him out until the Olympic break. And once he got back, he hit the ground running. He found something with Brock Bacer on the right side and Liam Ogrin over on the left side, the girl line. And you're right, Brock Bacer led the Vancouver connox. I think it was a point of game in those 25 games after the Olympic break. And Marco Rossi wasn't far behind. Why wouldn't you go right back to that to start? And we haven't had a chance to talk to him. I mean, a hulter will get that opportunity on Wednesday. I'm sure he'll throw some different looks at training camp. But in the back of his mind, he has to know that hey, there was something there that Marco Rossi got healthy. I was able to scoot around the ice. I could see his playmaking chops and his vision. I was a big part of a power play. It was really good after the Olympic break and Bester's production falls into that as well. You know, the connox had the second best power play in the National Hockey League from the Olympic break on. Yeah,

1:12:28it's a short span, but it's also 25 games. I don't know, weaker too. It was a 25 game stretch. So a third of their schedule, their power play was second only to the Stanley Cup champion, Caroline Hurricane. So as Manning and Hulter take over, I would think that he would lean into some of what worked for these guys down the stretch and go back to that. So I was, you know, as much as Elias Pederson and Brock Bester have played together and had some successes the lot of line, it's been a little while now since those two have sort of shown that they can be a formidable duo in the National Hockey League. And so I almost think I would forget trying to force that yet again. I think if I'm Manning, I'm coming right out of the gates with the healthy Marco Rossi and Brock Bester on his right side and see if that chemistry that was there has been regained and rekindled to start this new season. You poked your head in on the prospects this weekend as well? Yeah, I had one trip to Abbott's for it in me on Saturday.

1:13:29Yeah, it was good, but yeah, I know we're return visit for the Sunday game. So I saw them get the schooled on the scoreboard. Ultimately results don't matter in a weekend like that one. It is about individuals and who popped and I know that there is certainly some buzz around Adam Novotny and the goal that he scored on Saturday. I saw the highlighting backed it up with another one. You know, that's what you want to see. A first drum pick should stand out in a situation like that. You're going against other young players, but you're going against invites and guides that are never going to get a sniff of the National Hockey League. A player is pedigreeed, even if a young player like Novotny, you want to see those skills put to good use. And so the size is undeniable, and we all knew about this shot. And I just thought, good for him, you get your opportunities, take it. And he took the shot and he found the back of the net. And so if nothing else, should certainly give him some confidence as he heads to his first National Hockey League training camp here later in the week. So yeah, I went to the Saturday game. I was intrigued to see

1:14:36Britain Coots. So was he going to look? There were others obviously that could actually have three guys in their lineup on Saturday that had touched MHL ice already. And you want to see if that gives them a leg up in a situation like that. I thought, Todd Mueller, a little slow to start the game, but he got better as the afternoon went along. We talked about Coots and Curl Kudratsev was the other one. And they all had their moments. And then, you know, for me, I really was intrigued to find out a little bit more about Ilya Saphonov, right? I think we've heard the name for a while, but finally see the white to his eyes and see him in a connect uniform. He's a big dude. The size is undeniable. And the fact that as a 25 year old with six years of KHL experience, they asked Dan Milstein if he was willing to take part in a prospect showcase. And apparently, felt, hey, why not? You know, game action, get your legs under you a little bit. Maybe it gives you an edge as you head to training camp later in the week. So he didn't stand out necessarily. But

1:15:39that's not his game, though, either, right? I think he's just he's he's trying to be the latest sort of filler on that fourth line for the Vancouver Connux that can just be a pro that can just like a euholemical, you know? Yeah. And push Ratt to coming off the poor year. We were having the discussion Friday, Jeff, like if they have an injury at center, is it Saphonov? Is it Coots? Like, who would you see with Sasson shift back over to the middle? Like, how would you see it if they lose the center because God knows they didn't take a long last year before they lost multiple center men and were upshits Creek playing drew a corner down the middle. Yep. And I think, you know, throw time you were a guy that's had a nice little run under Manning Mel Holdren and has sort of gotten better and every man he's thrown a lot out of me. That called her cup year as a rookie. They were playing him in some tough minutes and big situations and he he lived up to it. So yeah, I mean, I think those are the guys just a funny story for Mabetsford. I went out there and I wasn't sure kind of what I was going to see or necessarily what I wanted.

1:16:40I wanted to write about it the daily face off and I thought, okay, this Fano story is interesting to me, but nobody seems to know, like, doesn't speak any English. What's the situation? So the Kinex PR staff said, yeah, English, it's a bit of a tough go. And then a few of us in the media said, well, hey, what about could we use Carol Conradsev as a translator? And so sure enough, post-game, Carol came out. They brought Saphonov off out with him. And to his credit, Conradsev stood in there and played the role of translator diligently. But I felt like maybe he was holding out on this a little bit because Saphonovs, apparently, it's like quite a character. He's just big fellow. He's got a big toothy greenie's mission to do. I think like a lot of guys that come from Russia, he understands English better than he speaks it. And so there were a few instances where before Conradsev could translate our question to him, he started answering in Russian. So he kind of scooped the middleman. But there was one instance where Saphonov, like, he was animated,

1:17:46and he had, I can't remember where the question was, you know, bad about being sort of smile on his face as he answered. And he's probably spoke for 30 seconds. And then Conradsev said, yeah, he likes fishing. And I was like, hey, he spoke for 30 seconds, 30 seconds. He's been way more than that. Come on. Like, I know we're not getting paid to be the translator here, but I think you're holding out on us. So, uh, understated game from Conradsev understated interpreter for Conradsev. Yeah, that makes sense. Anyways, it was good for laugh. And he, and Saphonov said he's taking tutoring twice a week already. He's been here since the middle of August. Loves the fish apparently, but hasn't had an opportunity yet, but it's looking forward to getting out onto one of our waterways here at some point. So hopefully some of his teammates will hook him up there. And apparently he's got the exit. He's going to have that photo with a retro setting sturgeon before, you know, I bet. Apparently he's got an exit clause for Europe. But it sounds like Dan Milstein is also maybe saying, no, no, he'll, he'll touch a HL ice if he has to.

1:18:49Yeah, that's my understanding. And yeah, Matt, you're right. At his size, I want to see him wrestle. That sturgeon. Yeah, it's taking down very, exactly. Exactly. Yeah, it'll, uh, yes, it sounds like he's got a wife and a young son in Russia. They're going to join him here. So we talked a little bit about homesickness, but I think everybody's kind of waiting to see where he ultimately falls before they make travel plans to come over here, whether it's Vancouver, whether it's Abbotsford. So, uh, you know, he's got that to look forward to as well, reunion with the family. And as he tries to settle in here in a new land and a new league, new surroundings. And yeah, as he moves to camp with his pro experience, that's probably a better situation just to see where he'll truly be slotted in terms of, you know, hey, over the weekend, on Saturday, 90s playing on top two role in a prospect's game. That's not who he is. And that's not who he's expected to be. You mentioned this earlier, and I noticed this online on the weekend. So the veterans are already doing their fitness testing for the connox. And of course,

1:19:53last year, remember, they didn't want to disclose or talk about the fitness testing, and it was because the vets performed poorly. So take me through. They're already doing fitness. I didn't think organized activities, team activities were allowed just yet, but talk me through already doing fitness testing for the vets and how many in his staff are going to approach all that. Yeah, I went out to Britannia on Friday. The prospects were skating out in Abbotsford. So most of the media that was covering the connox was out in the phrase of alley. I was the only one of Britannia. It was a skeleton crew. And I thought, okay, that's interesting. They've had scrimmages where they've had just about every guy, including some prospects. So they were down in numbers who were probably 13 or 14 guys skating at Britannia on Friday. And afterwards, I saw Zibouim in the parking lot. And I just, I hadn't had a chance to impersonate him on his contract. So I was just small talking to him as we walked to our cars. And I just said,

1:20:56where was everybody today? I was a little surprised. And I said, is it up to you as the players to decide when you want to take part in these informal skates? If you felt you wanted the day off, can you just opt out sort of thing? And he said, actually, he said today, most of the main guys, Patterson, DeBros, Chronic, he said they're getting their fitness testing in. And I think we've seen this the last couple of years. Training camp is now so short. Like, if you think about they fly to Pentecton on Wednesday as a team, they're on the ice Thursday Friday. There's a game in Seattle on Saturday night. It is two days. And so I think now, and we've seen in recent years, if they can get in and do the official weigh-in and measurements and some of the other things ahead of training camp, then it just allows them to focus on hockey side, getting get out instead of having however many players they're going to have in Pentecton. And you can imagine all the training staff trying to organize fitness testing as well as on ice sessions

1:22:01for the coaching staff. So I think it just clears that out of the way. But in terms of when guys can be on the clock and do official team activities, that's a good question. I don't know the answer to that, but I just know that as recently as Friday, and obviously today it's the golf tournament all hands on deck out at Northview. And so there's one more day of informal skates. And then the next time these guys gather, it'll be in Pentecton. And you will be there and we look forward to your coverage, Jeff. Thank you for this. And while I am low to agree with them, I do find myself going, yeah, that's probably right. Blake, he got curtain called by the fans. And he went out and he acknowledged the curtain call. Why is that bad? Well, it's a pity curtain call. Yeah, it is. No, it's out of love. It's pity. It's it's it's a $500 million dollar player getting a pity curtain called because he finally hit a home run at home in the final two weeks. Pity's not right. It is absolutely pity. 1:30:26you even though you've had a tough go. Okay. So if that's the interpretation fair enough, I'm not sure I would have been quick to think of that. You're in the dugout with, you know, 27 other teammates, Blake, you've got nine home runs on the year. Everybody in that dugout knows you have had a shockingly bad year in the power department. Like you've got like light hitting middle infielders who have more home runs than you. Matt, I'm very critical of this play. I'm very critical of this play in real time. And I was watching at the moment live. I had not had answered me, recoyled when I saw him do that. Oh boy. To me, it is we still love you even though you've had a tough go. And his answer to that is thanks for sticking with me. I appreciate you. That's the way I interpreted all of that. You know what? Like if he goes on a heater, he hits two or three home runs in a game where he goes two or three home runs.

1:31:26He's three for three when you hit the home run. Sure. But if he hits home runs over a consecutive day sort of things and it's like, oh, okay, the old Vlad is back. That's one thing. But I don't know. I found myself going, you want the American league last year? Like, let's not. Celebrate a guy hitting his first home run at the home ballpark. But you kind of, you're 13 if that is the catalyst for a resurgent Vladimir Guerrero. And again, he had a great day yesterday beyond even just the little. He's been pretty good for the last little while actually. Like he's got. He's hitting forever. She's hitting forever. It's like, it's not bad. But if that's the catalyst, it's going to look even more appropriate. You know, like it's, I honestly did not bother. Jay's one back of Cleveland for the final. Al wild card 12 games remain. They begin a three game set at home versus Detroit tonight. Cleveland in a series with the Chicago White Sox who have played very poor baseball of late. And so they've got a two pronged

1:32:29two routes to the postseason because they can win the Al central now on top of the wild card. And you were telling me the J's have a tie breaker over the Guardians. They do not have a tie breaker. So what you want this to be this here is to be the smelling salt for the white Sox. You want them to to wake up. Oh, shoot. The Guardians are here time to play ball. And you want the white Sox to sweep them. That's what you want. Yeah. White Sox have a it's a good young lineup. But a lot of those young bats seemingly are fading right now down the stretch. Trey Savage, former C through a bullpen on the weekend. And that was successful. So he's headed out on a rehab assignment. The hope is he'll only need one appearance on that rehab assignment. And then be ready to return to the bigs because God knows the J's rotation could still use them. Although I must say they're bullpen games are like automatic wins these days because that bullpen is just so darn good. Yeah. You Savage has been out with a knee injury since August 4th. Mariners put up 19 runs Saturday

1:33:31and Sacramento. But they lost the book end games. Five back in the division six back in the world. Yeah. So I'm softy trying to on Sunday morning before the game. He was trying to say, hey, we're only five back. Let's go. It's not over. It's over. 19 runs on Saturday. But lost the book end games to a dreadful athletics team. Big win in a terrific game for the British Columbia Lions who defeat Montreal 48 29 before 23,000 380 at BC place Saturday night. This game was long. I mean really long and complete with all sorts of action. There were two big man touchdowns in this game. There was a fight. There was an obscure rule of Canadian football that the Alps exploited. I saw everybody post got a friend text me. This could be the CFL game of the season. It's our buddy T-Mart say Lions and Alps in the great cup game.

1:34:31Please. Yes. Yes. It was highly entertaining. If it is a preview of what's the comment November, bring it on because I think it would be I mean they played two really good games actually back to back. There are the two most fun teams in the in the league. There's no doubt about it. No. So look, there was some residual matters from last week, but it really got heated. When Delta's Tyson Philpott, great Alouette's receiver with a late hit on BC's Christoph Bolier on a fumble returned. Play was dead really, but not blown dead. And so he gets hit late on the sidelines. Dog pile ensues. There's some scuffling. Keon Hatcher predicted it at halftime in his interview saying the temperature of the game was rising. Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander talked a whole lot after last week's Al's victory. He was also some upset with a first half sack from Meshiabets, the fine BC defense

1:35:32of Lyman. It was a horse collar tackle that became apparent and was enforced on review. Horse collar. Alexander called it horse shit after the game. Some of the lines defensive back said, oh yeah, he MF does a lot after that one. So hey, that's fun. Like, you know, bring on some beacons. I was actually sitting beside the Alexander families that Pacific Northwest guy had a big contention up for the point. There might not be enough of this in the CFL to be honest. Like blood feuds actual like the home and home encourages. Yeah, but like real rivalry. Like I don't like those guys. You don't see you don't get repetitive. You know, games are ton. But it's good. Well, you know, we've seen it most recently with Winnipeg here with the lines. Although they haven't been the bombers enough for it to be a real rivalry. You remember the Huff and Wally days when you go back enough Winnipeg, Cal Murphy, Don Matthew. I mean, so yeah, no,

1:36:36bring on the the feuding. Casey sales, all 290 pounds of them with a pick six touchdown in the first half. Mustafa Johnson, all 301 pounds of him for Montreal with a fumble return touchdown. Love watching the big guys want. That's playing. It was awesome. And then the punt. The puns. Although that is really kind to the word punts. That is really liberal definition of the word. Punts. So Montreal's Cole speaker. Employees the onside man, loophole in the Canadian rules. He's behind the line of scrimmage. So he's onside. He catches the football. He intentionally drops it. He punts it across the line of scrimmage. All of a few feet inches even. Yeah. And falls back down on it. It is a first down. They needed review.

1:37:38For those that are trying to wrap their head around why this is. It's akin to if you're actually punting them all picture your punter, your punter can punt it and of course be the guy that remembers it. So can all the up backs in protection. Everybody behind the line of scrimmages on side. And look, it was a rule that the allowets had exploited while several teams had exploited. In the past, Jashron, aren't we was the key figure who did he played for the lines actually a little bit, but played for the stamps and allowets as well. Jason Moss, the head coach of the allowets is certainly aware of and exploited this rule. There was a spirited debate in the Canadian football league rules committee about this and putting it into it. At the end of the day, they decided to ride it out. I was sitting in the same section just above Paul McCallum, the former BC Lions kicker when this went down. And you know, Paul said, look, like the defense has to defend the width of the field as well. That's your just going to allow a guy to run out of the backfield wide open.

1:38:44You're playing back is at second and 20. So we're playing a to prevent the first down in the traditional sense. As a defense, you do have to go out and cover the swing man and be there and be prepared for this. Here's the thing. The argument for keeping the rule. Others say it's Mickey Mouse. Like he basically touches it against his foot for a few inches. How can that be a first down when the markers are 20 yards down the field? It seems rinky. When you see it executed, you're right. It looks terrible. But what the rule is also doing is is trying to prevent pre-vent defenses. So one of the lamest plays in football is a second and 20 where you've got guys 10 yards off the line of scrimmage because you don't care about the first eight yards you're given the runner. So it's a really nothing play. And what this does is stretches out your defense. This is you got to you got to mark that guy a little more closely. And that opens play up for the offense. And of course, this is how leagues think. How do we open play up? How do we make our product exciting? And I think you could make the argument having to mark that guy to guard against that play

1:39:48probably makes the game more exciting. Yeah, I mean, it would open up more space. Yes. There'd be one less defender playing the middle of the field. That's right. The deep part of the field. Also, the ramifications for the punting game as well. Like and for as Blake mentions, it's oftentimes the punter who you'll see screaming up field on a short punt to try and recover. But if you have up backs protecting like the personal protector formation and pun formation, those guys are eligible to go run up and get the ball as well. So it can create some set excitement in the traditional punting game. Yes. I guess technically this was a punt. Yeah. On top of some excitement on the big second and long play where you have to defend that player closer to the line of scrimmage than you would otherwise defend him. Yeah. I'm like you. I'm up to minds of it. But when you see it executed, you hated immediately. But when you see it execute, you barely saw it execute. Yes. Like Rod Smith and Guns didn't pick it up. And immediately on the on the televa on the televised. I didn't see it. I was

1:40:52sitting there watching it live. I thought, oh, you just dropped the ball and picked it back up. But happy medium touched it with this. The happy medium could be this, Matt. Yeah. A punt needs to advance longer than five yards. Like you could put something in like that so that you don't make it so wrinkly. Because that has that. It becomes a real high risk play. That's right. Because then if they were if the defensive team recover there, then you're not getting all the field position of the pot. So I'm I'm I'm game for that. Yeah. We'll see what the rules of officials. But don't make it ten yards. Like don't. Yeah. I don't think you need to do that. Yeah. Yes. And McCallum was telling me with the new rules and everything. He's like, you know, they're basically, uh, and we've had the conversation. The misfield goal return. One of the most exciting place in Canadian football is going out the door. Right?
