Yeah, that
Chuck Norris was tracing the tyrannosaurus Rex the Rex was not chasing
Murray Murray are you there? You love sandwiches, huh? Let's go to uh 80
He was bow
Wow that prime time maybe not a crash on Betty Rubble. I honestly it's all after the segment
I did and we went to commercial break had no idea that Jonathan coachman was black he caught them the game last night
Although they won the game
You're listening to stucatsu company. I love this man. He's one of the best broadcasters we have
He is the voice of the final four and look what happens to i and eagle
The rare sweet 16 before the final four on his lap
Yes
This is the greatest regional I've ever seen i and this is insane what you're about to call yeah
It does feel like that stucatsu and obviously you've been following this thing forever
I've been doing the tournament for 29 years. We've had great regionals
Certainly we've had tremendous storylines. We've had incredible games
But prior to this one. I don't know if I've ever felt the build up
Quite like this this easily could have been the final four. Yes, and nobody would have even batten and eyelash
Right
So that's a pretty clear indicator that there are behemoths at play here. Yes
That's a great point. It's just about any year if this was the final four yeah
Everyone would be thrilled with this being the final four right it's crazy
Yeah, I think the St. John's part of it is the one that right spin a while
It's been a while
But for for those of a certain age
There is a romanticism
Regarding this because of depending about where you grew up depending upon you who you were a fan of depending upon if you were
Just a big east basketball head and it's ingrained in you that
That you have good thoughts when you think of St. John's it's been a long time. It's been
27 years for for this program to be on this stage, but
It just feels right with Rick Patino at the helm that this is the time for it to happen
Did the committee do St. John's wrong and and what I mean by that is just to get to the final four
Patino will have beaten bill self and Kansas will have to beat Duke and then if he gets past Duke
We'll have to face the winner of Michigan State and you cut. Yeah, you can make the case certainly that they were
They were better than what their seating was. I don't
I don't know if there were opinions already made and formed before the big east
Tournament where they just plowed through
They did not trail at all in the big east tournament. They were clearly better than every other team at this point in time in the big east now
We might end up seeing St. John's Yukon again and they'll be able to settle it on the court
But I thought there were going to be a foreseed. I did in the grand scheme
It's not even just the seed you are
It's where you're placed and the east region
Is completely stacked and we knew that prior and we still feel the same way even after two rounds
I and do you like today's college basketball?
I like what the byproduct has been for the NCAA tournament. I believe that we're getting high level games
I believe we're getting
Incredibly competitive action and while I know that we don't have the traditional Cinderella that we always
dreamed of
We have maybe some ancillary Cinderella that Nebraska and Iowa two teams that
Nobody leading up to the season would have predicted would be a part of this thing
Based on where they were in Nebraska's never won an NCAA tournament game before this year and Iowa had a guy that was coaching division
Two as recently as two years ago and has had this meteoric rise been McCollum as a head coach in in a major conference
So I think you get a little taste of it, but it's not the George Mason
It's not the Loyola Chicago. It's not the VCU
It's it's not Florida Atlantic
But I do think the games have been better. Yeah, and I felt that last year that the final four we got last year
Four number one seeds, right, which is not common as we know and
tremendous games
Those games were drag them out
Fight to the finish games all three of them. I thought
Duke and Houston was a serious battle. I thought Florida Auburn was fantastic
And then the national championship game came down to one final possession where Houston doesn't even get a shot off
Which is odd in it of itself. I remember
A national championship game down to one possession where the team doesn't even get a feel goal attempt off
So I just think that maybe we have to retrain our brain a little bit and for now this is the new normal
It's hard and I asked that question because we live in a world where Indiana dominates college football and Nebraska
Maybe the team that dominates college basketball. It's crazy
That that seems very backward-ass
I want to agree that is I can't get used to it. I know you're telling me to reach brain my brain
But I don't want to yeah, not not something in my lifetime
I thought that we would be talking about but it it does go to show you two things to me more than anything else
Obviously money talks we knew that yeah, that's that's never been a debate
But your leadership and the type of culture that that you set forth what we've seen with Nebraska and Fred Hoyberg
It's taken form. It's taken hold. He had this visual and it's been building. It's been building remember two years ago
They went on a run in the Big Ten tournament
They they opened some eyes around the country that maybe they could be a factor and then took a step back last year
Well, they're back with the vengeance and it just shows that a really solid leader and
Building a team and a culture can work hurt sitting that he enough said
I mean this guy came in with confidence. He's not the first to have bravado
But he's among the first to really back it up in short order
And of the of the three one-seeds left Michigan, Arizona, and Duke it feels like Duke with crazy enough
As the one being overlooked the most
What is Patrick Gumbah due to Duke's ceiling now that he's back?
I thought he changed everything from round one to round two all of the confidence that
Siena built in the first round getting towards the ram not feeling like there was a real
hurdle for them on the defensive end Duke is known as a great defensive team
I didn't feel that in the first half against Siena that team just gained confidence
And I thought a lot of it was based on the fact that you didn't have the presence of Gumbah a true shop blocker
And a true presence to throw them off their game second half Duke
Obviously they they found something and they regained their confidence. They looked
Shell shopped. I mean, I'm telling you from the court side of you
Looking into their eyes in that first half
It was truly a moment where I thought personally as we had halftime they could get clipped
Like they just didn't have the look of a number one overall seed of a champion
And then they rally in in the second half second round completely different story Gumbah was a plus
20 in
13 minutes of action. Yeah, that's the kind of impact that he had. I thought
What I noticed was TCU all of those shots that were going down in the first round against Ohio state
What punch was doing around the rim? He couldn't do any of it any of it
So I just think he's a he's a huge factor the foster injury though in a game like this again St. John's
could be
very serious because
I just think St. John's is going to
They're gonna sick the dogs on them. They're gonna pick up full court. They're gonna harass them
They're gonna challenge Duke to just get the ball across the line to get into their offense and
I know this is hard to say
But I think they might actually need more right now from
From Cameron Booser than they got in the first two rounds, which was a lot
But in this game in particular he's gonna have to handle the ball quite a bit
That's an additional responsibility that I'm not sure they expected at this stage of the tournament
It's fairly amazing that Rick Patino at least for me growing up one of the most polarizing figures anywhere in sports
And now he's beloved every
Taylor loves them every team would want rip it through to be their head coach
It's crazy what happened there the rules change I guess yeah, you know what I think
Obviously different people handle things at different stages of their life in different ways
I just think there's a real
Joy that's coming through
How he's conducting himself and that's not to say he didn't enjoy winning prior, but he did it with a more serious tone
His press conferences were were often pretty direct and now you're seeing the human being behind the coach
And that could be AIDS that could be experienced that could be just based on
Where he is in his life and this particular team, but I've just noticed his
His comportment is different. He's enjoying the hell out of this. Yes. That goes a long way. Yeah, it really does
I'm Laurie Segal a long time tech journalist and consider my new podcast mostly human your bridge to the future
Anyone can now be an entrepreneur anyone can build a nap and it's very empowering each week
I'll speak to the people building that future and we're gonna break down what all of this innovation actually means for you
What I come to realize is that when people think that they're dating these AI companion
They're actually dating the companies that create this
We're experiencing one of the greatest tech accelerations in human history
And let's be honest that can be messy
There's no playbook for what to do when an AI model hallucinates a story about you
But it's my belief that we should all benefit from this moment
Mostly human will show you how my goal is to give you the playbook
So you can benefit the reason I say agencies because like if we can give power back to people

You
As someone who graduated from syracuse university and we'll get to that
In just a second because we did some blind rankings
With Danny Parkins and well, well, we'll give you the results here
Adjusted made it but are you a fan of the hire of Jerry McNamara as your new head coach?
Yeah, I thought syracuse was going to deputize me at halftime of that
Sianna Duke game and just said hey just go up to Jerry and tell him the gig is his
On behalf of orange nation. Yeah, just represent all of us and get the deal done
I said well actually I have to urinate can I do that first because that's what I do at halftime
No, I think it's a it's a home run hire. It's what they need right now
Look, they also need the resources and the support and as we know currently in college basketball. It's a money game
but
It's not just how much money you have as we've seen there are a lot of programs that had
Big year spending and didn't have the success that they were hoping for
It is chemistry. It is connectivity with your your guys and I do think
He provides a very strong voice for anyone that's never talked to Jerry McNamara or spend any time with him
He's got a lot of confidence see at confidence as a player. He's got confidence as a coach
I think he believes in how he messages and at this juncture
this
Fanbase needed something like this to get behind would they have been fine with someone outside the family
I think they probably would have if it meant winning
Yeah, but I think this is an added bonus that he is a true blue Syracuse guy with a national championship
And a highlight reel as a player that you can put on a loop
And he's already shown that he's he's got the makings of a outstanding head coach
Were you surprised that Carolina got rid of you for Davis? I was I was obviously we did that game in greenville and
I thought to myself man
How different would this look with Caleb Wilson in the lineup one of the best players in the country
Probably a top three pick may even be the number one pick depending upon who's making that selection
I think if you take the best player off of every roster in college basketball
It's obviously very challenging to win and win consistently
If they win that game I always find this interesting in the the sliding doors world that we live in
If they win that game if they don't go to OT if they handle their business and
Hold off VCU and then lose in the second round and a tight one against Illinois right
Is there a change or no probably not I will tell you this if he gets to the sweet 16 with Caleb Wilson
There is no change at all. He's no no doubt right no doubt on my mind
If they advance through this tournament with Caleb Wilson now that's not a guarantee Illinois tough
They're big their physical right to me. They they had one of the the best opening weekends of this tournament
How they looked it's based on a number of factors their first round match up was with Penn
They just over match them and then the second round
They got this team that was an upstart squad that didn't see themselves as a Cinderella
But certainly pulled off something in that first round a 19 point comeback against UNC
I
Think that there was something simmering clearly at UNC previously that just percolated to the point where
They they couldn't dismiss it and they ended up dismissing Hubert in the process
It's always weird when a player who was great at a school ends up becoming a head coach of that school and then
Has to move on and now what's the relationship Patrick Ewing Georgetown and
Chris Mullen St. John's there there are a bunch of these examples where red lottery Syracuse
You don't know now what that dynamic is going to be for the next five 10 15 20 years
Does Hubert ever walk on that campus again?
Or does he get over at some point and have success somewhere else and and just say all right this happened for a reason
It's tricky because you know they wanted to celebrate Hubert Davis's career and Hubert's like no
I'm not done coaching. I still want to be the coach at North Carolina
Yep, I don't want to celebrate my career
So I don't know if he walks back on the campus again
It's uh, it's gonna be interesting
But it's also another sign of how much the times have changed where you have potentially the Kansas job opening up
The Carolina job is open and Syracuse just filled their job like those three jobs used to never come open
I and it's crazy. Yeah, really. Yeah, don't know they they had lifers those were lifers at the Jim Bayheim was there forever
As we know
Prior that with Kansas Roy Williams had the long stint followed by Bill self and then
UNC had to tap dance a little bit in the post Dean Smith era with Guthriege and
With Dirty Roy Williams obviously in there as well. I just I think
Things are changing in the college basketball landscape and
You know, it's funny
Stugots when you broke into the industry sports radio was playing
Such a role in a lot of these decisions because it was the first time
That decision-makers could put an outlet on
And literally here from their fan base. It was just a small
portion of their fan base
But you get in a car and you turn on sports radio you would hear a talk show host in New York
Of course Mike in the mad dog
but callers checking in and giving their opinion and
I do think it affected decision-makers opinions on certain things now
Let's just move on to modern day
with Twitter with
Individual podcasts with reddit with message boards
You now have outlets that you could go to as an ed or as a gm
And you can get a sense of where the wind is blowing again fair unfair. Right. It's a whole different argument
But it's real yes, and it's happening. Yeah, Mike and the mad dog got piazza to the meds, didn't they?
Yes, if yes, my believe that
Yeah, it's you know, it's so funny
It's like one of those where were you moments and we do this all of us as sports fans. I think
Sometimes people that aren't sports fans don't understand
How someone could have ridiculous recall of dates and moments and what was happening in their life at the time
I think at sports fans we tend to naturally catalog
Moments in our brain of what you were doing
What was happening
How did it affect other aspects of your life? So the Mike piazza thing
I was on vacation with my family right at Disney. Yes
And walking around Disney like dealing with the lines the heat
You know, I could only do this in the summer because of my schedule
So I only took my kids to to Disney when it was a hundred seven degrees
Right, this was tortured yourself
Complete and utter tore we did it four times and on the fourth one my wife and I looked at each other and we said
Never again. I guess we we were defeated as human beings. Yeah, so
That particular day my son was a met's fan and
was young
And I remember getting the news at Disney and he was sweating his balls off as a little kid
wearing a tank top or an NBA jersey and I said the met's got Mike piazza
No way it affected his life. I guarantee you if you ask Noah right now
Where were you when the met's got Mike piazza? He would remember and you're right
Mike Mike on the med dog
very much
Went with the narrative that they made it happen and maybe they did yes
I mean listen
I remember where I was when late or hit the shot against me. Oh, yeah
I'm a piazza
Get Noah on the show, please because I want to
When this happens, I'm glad you brought him up because I'm wondering can you explain the difference for you emotionally
You calling a game as opposed to listening to your son
Call the game because I I'm guessing it feels better listening to your son do it
Yeah, you're you're right. Yeah, it's funny when
I I have people come up to me and and they're saying something really nice
And I take it as such but they say hey, I heard your son
And man
He might end up being better than you so it's like this weird back-handed compliment right
But it's a full-on compliment
I want him to be better of course we want our children to do better than us so
Yeah, a lot of pride and you know my wife and I
There are moments watching a game where we want a hundred percent look at one another and and just think
How did this happen?
This little kid that that now
has
The ability to go on the air and show no signs of nervousness or anxiety and just do is
Thing and do it with a sense of passion and a sense of purpose
So it it's been this whole other chapter that has been unexpected
Completely, but I do feel for my wife who really was not a huge sports fan before all of this started
Yeah, she went through 30 years of having to watch my games. I didn't make her but you know she did
Just just a few of a part of it. Yes, and now this whole other
Avenue in which she has to watch games or listen to games involving my son, right? I think she consumes more NBA
Than any person in her friend group
I could safely tell you 20 years doing the show with love it's hard my wife never listened
Not
No, she didn't want to she was
Yeah, yeah, she's probably better still gots. Yeah, you'll be honest with you. Yeah, the stew gots in her is not strong
No, no, it's not
Um, so it's interesting so you take a great deal of pride because yes, it's great watching you want your kids to be a better version of yourself
Um, do you find it hard not to give them pointers from time to time and does he do does he receive them well?
No, no, I don't find it hard at all my my pointers are usually mixed in
With something else. It's never a text after a game. Hey, here's 11 things that I really think you need to improve
I'm not a douchebag person for me
And then second I just don't parent that way. I never parented that way
It's usually in the form of some other conversation and if something strikes me in the moment
That I think could help him
I absolutely will share with him
But I also have to let him do his own thing and do it his way
But I think he would tell you that our relationship
Has obviously had this new spin to it because we do the same job
But at the core it's still
What it always was and and the broadcasting part has just been and add on it's not replaced something else
Has he gained enough confidence here where perhaps from time to time he'll reach out to dad and give dad some pointers
No, that would not be well accepted by any stretch. No, you got to know your place in life. Yes
You'll ground them even at this age you'll ground them. I can ground them. That's that's not a problem
I still have authority. That's not an issue. No, if he if he ever noticed something
I would want him to tell me so
It is a two-way street and that's how it should be
Is Bill Raftry because for me he is I don't want to say he's underrated
He just kind of flies under the radar just a little bit
But I feel like he's the best sports analyst we have going you agree?
I think he might be the best of all time
Charlie I'm joking. He's so good in terms of the mix that you're looking for as a viewer
Of course you want analysis you want to hear someone's knowledge and preparation
And I think Bill probably hasn't gotten enough credit for that part of it his prowess as an analyst is legit
He coached in the Big East. He was a headman for Seaton all he's been around basketball his whole life
He was a highly accomplished player which he downplays
But he was at one point he was the all-time leading scorer in the state of New Jersey
As a high school player for many years
It only recently went down
Went to LaSalle was a tremendous player at LaSalle and only because at the time the NBA
Didn't have a lot of teams
He ended up getting cut by the New York Knicks, but in any kind of expanded format
He's an NBA player and would have played in the league. So that changes your persona a bit
I think he leaned into the other side which was
Very comfortable for him self-deprecation yes and using that to his advantage because sometimes people will underestimate you
When you approach life that way the part that that sets him
To a category by himself is
His feel for the moment and when it's time to really
Punch with something that is memorable and grabs your attention and fits
The the event yes the moment he knows how to caption and I can tell you I've worked for them
You know we're talking about the better part of 30 years
Which is hard for me to wrap my brain around right? It really is off the cuff
This is not a guy that's got a yellow legal pad with a bunch of
Sayings on it. He just can intuitively
Hit the right moment with the right words and
It's incredibly memorable and it's also
It's highly
It's highly relatable. Yes, it really feels like someone you'd be sitting on the couch with watching the game
Right that would that would say that and would crack you up and for you calling the game
It has to be such a comfort to know he's always got it whenever you need he always has it for you
You know he does. Yes, and I've said this before but it's worth reiterating
You know amidst all of these
Things that I've been incredibly fortunate to be a part of in my broadcasting career
The one thing that I know
If not for this
None of it would would have happened and that was getting paired with him. Yes in
1995
On New Jersey Nets broadcast because just being around him
taught me
Things that I never would have known in how to do the job how to approach the job
how to
Blur the line between your personality and the persona that you're putting on the air how to do it with a sense of fun
And levity but also the preparedness and not taking any broadcast for granted
We did some bad
Nets teams. Yes, really bad Nets teams. Yes, and I can tell you even though we may have not had many viewers
Bill and I still treated it like it was going
Across the globe, right? We we always felt like it mattered and I think that was something that was 100% planted in my head
Because of him and because of his approach
Uh, we'll get you out here in just a second and we appreciate you do with this
I did want to thank you. I've been meaning to thank you for some time now
I've been railing against this forever when you come back into a game like a game in Miami for example
They come back the games being played in Miami, get orders yet. They pan in through the Cleveland. They're on South Beach
Which is 45 minutes away from really actual game and I was watching you
I think it was a jet game. Yes, it was yes, it took us through the shithole that is New Jersey
Because you two are upset. Hey, don't put us in New York City
We're in New Jersey and you took us through New Jersey and I wanted to thank you for doing that
Yeah, no, that means a lot's to got that
That one I think resonated I think there's a certain kind of audience
That that thinks so who cares? Whatever show me anything. I want to see the game
Yeah, but then there's another faction and I would be included in that thank you where
I am not happy if you're showing something from a different area but claiming
It's within that area
You're misleading me. Yes. How can I trust you?
Your credibility is shot. We had a thing and I'll do this sometimes in a passive aggressive way right
With our crew what we have a tremendous crew and and everybody that that works on the show
I I truly have the ultimate respect for in every single role they care it matters
They take it seriously, but they do it with a smile and the right attitude
But we were in Chicago doing the big 10 championship right and the the final on Sunday
The weather was brutal
brutal
It was heavy rain wind there was the chance of snow and
We're coming back from break and they're going to show me the shot that they're using that I'll do the next set of billboards over right and I said to them
I go
Is that a live shot they go no, no, no, I go
It's really nice out right now. Is that what you're telling me like no, it is and we'll get you another shot
Like don't mislead the public. Yes. Yes. Don't show me a picture from Chicago eight years ago
Right try to sell it as
This is what's happening right now in yes in the windy city. I don't buy it
You're not alone McDonough's with us by the way because when he was doing the hockey and it was in sunrise Florida
They would pan in through south beach and for Florida. They'll beach and shones like hey. We're out by a mall
Like we're not yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Have you ever been to Jacksonville? Yeah, it's ever been a Jacksonville horse. Yes
So when I got the the NFL on CBS job in in 1998 I had never been to Jacksonville before
So I go to Jacksonville and I'm curious. I said well, you know, where do you hang with like? Oh, I gotta go to the landing
All right really
So you go to the landing and it's you know basically a circle cement with some restaurants and some shops
And that's it
Nothing beyond that now. It's on the water. So that part was nice. Right. It's a place to drink right place to drink
Basically, I think there was like a fake hooters there. Yeah, so
Ha ha ha ha
At some point about I don't know four years ago
They got rid of the landing. It just went away. Yes, the shops went away the restaurants went away
I don't know what they're doing at the landing, but it doesn't exist right and I'm watching a game two years ago
And they have a shot of the landing in Jacksonville
I
Ha ha ha ha it doesn't fucking exist close down it's closed
What are we doing?
I'm glad I'm not alone. Thank you
