Yeah, that Chuck Norris was tracing the Tyrannosaurus Rex, the Rex was not chasing the Jeep.
Murray, Murray, are you there?
You love sandwiches, huh?
Let's go to 80.
He was bow.
Wow.
That's prime time, maybe.
Nah, I had a crush on Betty Rubble.
I honestly, it's all after the segment I did and we went to commercial break, had no idea
that Jonathan coachman was black.
He caught them the game last night, although they won the game.
You're listening to Stukatsu Company.
He is one of the great football minds in our industry.
I miss him dearly.
He is laughing at me already.
I was trying to prop him up.
Bill Barnwell is with us.
Why are you laughing?
You're one of the great football minds we have in this industry.
The mind, the mind elements of it.
If you say a writer, at least there's content that's being put out, but the mind element
feels like it stretches beyond to it, like a different plane of ability that I don't
know that I can really take credit for.
I went too far.
Is that what you're saying?
A tiny bit too.
Bill Barnwell is with him.
You can check him out all over ESPN and of course ESPN.com.
Bill of all the NFL teams this off season, in your opinion, who had the best off season
so far?
Who?
That's a good question.
Thank you.
Best overall off season.
Yes.
It's easier to think of the teams who did not have the best overall off season.
The Ravens did not have the best overall off season.
Would it be crazy to say the Colts?
I know that I'm a little nervous about that Daniel Jones contract.
I don't think I would want to take $50 million out of my bank account and hand it to Daniel
Jones and say, hey, play quarterback and stay healthy for 17 games.
But I do feel like of the things they needed to add, they needed to recite Alec Pierce,
who's a super underrated player, they needed to get Daniel Jones back under contract.
This organization had been through just a mess of quarterbacks over the last almost
decade now since Andrew Luck retired.
Getting Daniel Jones back on a two-year deal, I think it's generally a positive when
you look at the numbers for that contract.
Colts are the first team that comes to mind, although I think they're not many people
who agree with me.
Bill, I'm checking out your article on ESPN.com today, the 20 big remaining issues for the
20 contenders.
And it's just chock full of good information.
But my question for you is, do you really have 20 contenders next year?
That's a great question.
Because if you have 20 contenders, Bill, you know what you don't have?
You don't have one.
I mean...
Okay.
Here's the problem.
If I start picking contenders, people are going to be mad.
If I make an arbitrary list of who I think is going to contend, people are going to get
upset.
So I try to pick the most bland description of what it contenders is.
These are 24 and 25 playoff teams.
So if you made the playoffs in the last two years, to me, you are a contender.
You might as well just said, everybody but the jets and dolphins.
It's easier to figure out who's not a contender.
You're right.
Yes.
Oh, that is so good.
I want the list of 20 contenders.
You can get him for me.
I got it right here.
Do you really?
Okay.
So give me his top contender.
Who's his top contender?
He doesn't have him listed like that.
I just see the list of the teams we can jump to.
Okay.
All right.
So we'll get back to the alphabetical order.
Go ahead.
All right.
So give him to me.
I want him.
Go right now.
Give him to me.
All right.
Baltimore.
Yes.
Buffalo.
Yes.
Carolina.
What?
That warms my heart.
Carolina.
I wonder division last year.
Almost.
They had a lead on the Rams in the final three minutes of a playoff game last year.
You're right.
Stop yelling at me.
Yes.
I mean, listen.
You're one of the great football minds.
Don't yell.
Stop yelling at me.
All right.
Keep going from Carolina, please.
We have to do that.
We have Chicago.
Yeah.
We have Denver.
Yes.
We have Detroit.
Yes.
Green Bay.
Houston.
Okay.
Jacksonville.
Okay.
Kansas City.
Yes.
Both L.A. teams.
You're right.
Jesus.
That's pretty good so far.
Yeah.
Minnesota.
He's doing a good job of reading.
I just don't agree with most of them.
I'm sorry.
I understand.
But this is one of the great football minds that we have.
I have a hard time seeing the Vikings win a Super Bowl.
What's going to happen here, Bill, with JJ McCarthy?
He's going to be gone.
I mean, there's no reason for Kyler Murray to sign in Minnesota,
unless he's extremely confident.
Right.
He's going to be the starter.
And there's no reason for Carson Wentz, who sat out most of the offseason last year,
to sign in Minnesota to be the number three quarterback.
Yeah.
JJ McCarthy is a sunk cost at this point for the Minnesota Vikings.
The GM who drafted him is no longer in the building.
He saw him last year.
They had to watch him in practice.
They know he got hurt multiple times.
There's no reason for them to continue with the JJ McCarthy Sherrain.
He's going to be somewhere else.
I would imagine in Los Angeles with Jim Harbaugh,
but just feel like he has to find a new spot to be developed behind a starter.
Bill, I'm seeing everybody zig and I'm trying to zag when the Max Crosby trade breaks down.
Am I crazy with the additions that the Raiders made and adding Fernando Mendoza?
I can kind of talk myself into the Raiders sneaking their way into the playoffs this year.
Oh, geez.
Ooh.
I could speak, but I can talk myself into them being better than people think,
because when you improve dramatically, the two things that almost always come along at that
are upgraded quarterback, upgraded head coach.
You can make a case the Raiders have done both this year if they draft Mendoza,
and they hired Clint Kubiak as head coach.
The problem is, if you'd asked me last year,
are the Raiders going to be better?
I would say yes, because they upgraded the head coach and they upgraded the quarterback.
And I went 0 for 2 in those upgrades at head coaching quarterback last year.
So I've just been burned.
I do feel like there are better to the people given credit for,
but the schedule is difficult.
Mendoza is not going to have a ton of help up front.
I think they're a year away from being a year away.
It's amazing that we're saying they upgraded a head coach from an unknown commodity
from a guy who's probably headed to the Hall of Fame as a head coach.
But they did what you're right. Yes.
Bill, who are the best remaining free agents in your opinion?
Is it crazy to say that Kurt Cousins might be one of the best remaining free agents?
No, he's not a terrible quarterback.
I mean, how many teams last year had to turn to, let's say,
a Jared stood him in the AFC championship game.
Well, that game have gone differently.
If the Vikings had had, say, or sorry, the Broncos had had Kurt Cousins
had quarterback potentially.
I think some of the edge rushers think should have been clowny.
Joey Bosa still available.
You know, just those guys who are going to be,
they're going to play 55-60% of the stops.
They're going to get seven or eight sacks.
They're going to take one absolutely insane penalty in a playoff game.
But they're going to be overall pretty solid pass rushers.
I think that's going to be an addition killer.
Left tackle, formerly of the Lions, who's a free agent.
Just there's so many teams who, again, need tackle help at some point
during the season, have to imagine he's going to get an opportunity.
And then I throw Debo Samuel out there.
No, he set the guy from five years ago.
But incredible yak production year after year.
He's the yak god.
I just think all these teams who want to throw short passes,
want to throw screens, want to play quick game.
Debo Samuel is a really valuable player in those offenses.
So some veterans, which typically linger in the market,
but I do see some guys who could make a difference in 2026.
Bill, were you surprised with the return
that the dolphins were able to get for Jalen Waddle?
Because it feels like the dolphins are more likely to draft a number one receiver
than Jalen Waddle is to ever become a number one wide receiver.
Wow, strong.
Well, he was for one year.
Yes, he was.
But that's one year out of like six or five at this point of his career.
He's a good player.
And maybe it was a case of the dolphins saying,
hey, we're not going to trade not only our best player left,
but probably the most popular player we have left on this roster after all the other guys
we cut were traded away in the prior 12 months,
unless we get a first round pick and more.
I wonder if it was just like a the Broncos felt like we have to get this guy
and the dolphins were not willing to do anything less than what they got
because if they're trading for like a second round pick,
it's almost, you know, like that's the only guy left who people have on their jerseys
outside of divide H and, you know, in the stands.
So I do think it was probably a little more than I would have expected from the Broncos,
but it is the 30th pick in each round.
They get a swap of fourth round, which helps a little bit.
I feel like it was pretty fair in the big picture.
Which move did you like better to would to the Falcons or Kyler Murray to the Vikings?
I would say Kyler to the Vikings because there are a lot of crossing routes in that offense.
A lot of ISO stuff to Jeff Jefferson.
I feel like that really fits into what Kyler Murray does well.
I just wonder because the Vikings in Kevin O'Connell, who by the way is an extremely tall person,
their offense is under center heavy play action.
Kyler Murray wants to play at a shotgun, wants to play at a pistol,
needs to have some space to see the entire field.
So I want to see what that offense looks like and how it's constructed.
Kind of the same problem with to it and Cleveland where to wants to be in the shotgun
and Kevin's defancy wants to be under center.
But I do think that Kyler Murray is a better player.
I think he has more upside.
I think he has a higher ceiling and I think he's going to offer something in the run game
that the other Vikings quarterbacks they've had over the years past have not.
What'd you make of Geno going back to the Jets?
Yeah.
I love a reunion.
Do you really?
Maybe I don't love this reunion.
But I love a reunion.
And the Geno Smith has something in the bag here.
I just think the Jets don't have the infrastructure to get what Geno Smith needs to have happened.
He needs better past protection on what they have.
They lost both their starting guards and free agency.
They have one great receiver in Garrett Wilson.
I think it's legitimately a great receiver.
They don't really have much else to work with in the passing game.
Please call coming back on the franchise tag or sorry on the one year deal does help.
But it just feels like Geno has to be in a perfect situation at this point
to be a league average or better quarterback.
And we saw what the Raiders last year.
Well, that offensive line was a mess.
Once Brock Bowers got hurt, Geno couldn't compensate.
I kind of feel like that's going to happen with the Jets this year.
It's fairly amazing that he left that team.
And when he left, they had no infrastructure.
And all these years, he's coming back.
And they still don't have that infrastructure.
I mean, the other worst organization in football, right?
Yeah.
And what the good news is over the course of the instrument decade,
they also did not at any point have the infrastructure
for a quarterback to succeed.
They didn't get it for like five years and then lose it.
They were gone breath for the entire decade.
Bill, the two surprise teams last year,
I think people would agree on the bears and the patriots.
Which team do you think is more likely to take a step back this year?
Wow.
I want to say both, but that's not a fair answer.
So I'm going to give you one.
I am going to say patriots because of the schedule difference.
This was not just an easy schedule.
Although if it were a nose, it was an easy schedule.
By pro football reference, this was the 10th easiest schedule
in the history of the National Football League,
which is a really high bar.
Think about how many years of football there have been.
And this was a historically easy schedule.
Drake Bay played really well.
They had some incredible catch rates,
which I don't think are going to sustain.
I think Drake Bay's efficiency is going to drop a bit.
They're going to play tougher teams.
They're not going to be able to play from ahead quite as often.
Their run defense was a problem.
They didn't play many teams who got ahead and ran on them.
But that's going to happen more often in 2026.
And they were a relatively healthy team.
And I don't think that's going to keep up.
So they're going to be good.
They're still going to be in the playoff mix.
But I would say up to two, the patriots and the TMI
have a little more concerns about heading into the next season.
Tell you see what he did there.
This is why he's one of the great football minds in America
that we have in our industry because the patriots,
the only way they could take a step forward
is by getting back to the Super Bowl and winning it.
Yeah.
Yes.
You didn't even know you did that.
Did you?
Yeah.
The extra mind power.
You know what they say?
Like you only use 10% of your brain.
Right.
If I'm one of the great football minds,
I got to be using at least 12%.
Yeah.
Maybe 13%.
Yeah.
I use five.
Malik Willis.
Are you as high on Malik Willis as everyone else seems to be?
No.
Because he's throwing to guys like me at receiver at this point
in the offense.
I thought he was really good in Green Bay.
Much better than I expected.
Not just as a runner, but as a pure dropback passer.
Heavy play action rate helped him a little bit.
He got to play from ahead.
I don't think I'd love the idea of him playing
from two touchdowns behind,
which I think is going to happen quite a bit this year.
But he just needs guys.
They just don't have playmakers for him at receiver in that offense.
So you assume they're going to draft somebody.
I think they need two three receivers out of this draft
to give Malik Willis a shot of competing in 2026.
Totally unnecessary shot at 2-2 at well.
I mean.
Wow.
Are you represent Mr. Atwell?
Are you his agent?
I mean, is that unreasonable to say?
This man got $10 million and he wasn't even playing
with the Rams by the end of the regular season.
Bill, now I'm imagining you running routes
and your football receiver name is Bill Barn Atwell.
So am I.
What a great target he would be.
2-2 at well runs like a 4-4-40.
I run like a 14-4-40.
So just add a little bit more.
And I'll catch up with 2-2 eventually.
Taylor wasn't terribly confident in that game.
No.
He wasn't sure if he landed well.
I don't think it did.
Bill, we appreciate you.
You're a great writer, a great football mind,
and a great person.
Check them out on ESPN.com and all over ESPN as well.
Thank you for doing this, man.
Thanks, guys.

I'm just waiting for the mayor.
I mean wow I think he's ready to go right now.
Hoyberg's ready to go right now the mayor.
All right let's bring him off.
He's probably heard the intro and had to get in on this.
Drop the music I was saying we will pick it up after Fred
Hoyberg.
What a treat.
Just Marcus smart with a national championship.
I mean he gets get to Fred.
The mayor Fred Hoyberg the head coach of Nebraska
joining us right now right after a first round victory
here coach thank you for joining us how are you?
Good good how you guys doing?
Doing great congratulations to you coach big win for you.
Yeah thank you.
I'm really happy for our guys proud of them.
I'm not sure how much you guys saw this but it was the
best neutral side atmosphere I've ever been in.
Our fans just absolutely took over and you know when I went
out for the anthem I really got emotional just seeing all the
red in the crowd and you know they really helped us
really really will us to that win and we went on a run you
know just the roof who off the place so it was it was
incredible great to share that with fans and you know
hopefully continue on this journey.
Yeah coach I caught the beginning of the game right before
you started going on your run and I it felt like there was
a little bit of extra attention in the air obviously the
first tournament win for you guys at stake.
Did it feel bigger going in even before you saw you
know the fans and everybody at that site ready for you?
That's a great question.
I get the question a lot.
Do I bring it up?
I don't have to.
There's been enough attention on it and you know without
there are guys read all about it so they know they know
what's at stake and you know I told them I said guys listen
at the end of the day pressure is a privilege.
Is there pressure on us?
Yes but there's also pressure on Troy and you know for
us to go out there it was all about we had a disappointing
game in Chicago against Purdue.
Now a lot of that had to do with Purdue they're absolutely
rolling right now and they cut down the net in Chicago but
you know it gave us a chance to reset in get back to work
and get back to who we are and you know the core values
and we talked a lot about that going into this game and
you know the importance of in these early ones you know
game started before noon here local time is you know
the team to get off to the fast start generally wins these
games but if it didn't happen we had to stay more emotionally
stable than we did the last time that we played which was
against Purdue.
You know just I'm really thankful for the guys how they
prepared for this one.
You know Troy hit a couple tough threes early in this one to
build a little bit of a lead but we never panicked and we got
that thing going price and for it five threes in the first
half and you know they just kept the heat and kept the
pressure and kept their foot in the gas so you know just
it's good to get this one behind us and you know
now it's about are you satisfied and you know one thing
I'm confident our guys all year long they have really
been good resilient as far as putting big emotional either
wins or losses behind us.
Got a film session tonight we talk a lot about next assignment
our next assignment is the film session we got to be locked
in.
Coach if anybody had seen Price Sanford shoot for the first
time today they thought to themselves wow this might be the
best shooter in this tournament talk about just his
his shooting ability and just what he can do for you guys
with that you know quick release.
Well it's really cool his brother Paiden is on a two way
with the thunder and he was in he was in the gym he scored his
first NBA points last night on the road and they sent him back
and he was able to be there to watch Price you know go
off the way he did today and I'll say this about our guy they
do an unbelievable job finding him I thought we did a great
job on the glass and we didn't force it inside against
length we kicked it out and really created some open looks
and then our in transition I thought we did a good job
finding him in transition as well and that's what this team has
been all about they've been very unselfish we had 20
assists and only six turnovers in this game today and that
was a huge factor in the win.
Coach college sports is so interesting right now and I am
wondering because I think a lot of people looked up and
were surprised to see how good Nebraska was at basketball
but Indiana dominates football so why not Nebraska in
basketball how did you build this thing so quickly.
Well I'm not sure it was quick you know you're seven now
and you know we here's what we took over the largest
rebuild in the history of the power five and we knew
we were going to take some lumps and then year two was
COVID so those first two years were you know we're really
tough I think we won seven games in each of those two
years and then it's steadily gone uphill from there and
we got the right guys in this program we got some local
kids you know I give Sam Gritole who is from Lincoln
he transferred in for his senior year that's really when we
started flipping everything and you know the culture got
toward needed to be you know we got the right guys to hold
accountable the standards that we were trying to live
up to and you know we've had a lot of guys that have just
really bought into that so it's just you know this team
particularly in particular it's been such a fun team to be
around because there's no agenda with this group there's
no you know there's no distractions they they come on
time they take care of their academics you know off off
court there's been no incident so it's just been you know
when you when you have a group like that it makes our
team a lot easier for it uh marches all about you know
the close games like even the first game that tipped
off today ended up being a two point game there but
where they blow out like you guys experience today how
much confidence is that really give you going forward you
can move past the first win and say to your team look how
well we can perform when we're on our game.
Yeah and we'll listen we'll play a completely different
team next game with different schemes offensively and
defensively and and that's what I'm talking about getting
over you know the this one quickly but our guys have
done it all year so there's no reason to believe that
that one continue and you know we need a film
session we'll talk about the game plan we'll put it
in tomorrow we've got a new practice here in Oklahoma
City and it's all about going out and executing but I
thought our guys really played with discipline today and
you can see that with the turnover margin I thought 19
to three on second chance points 17 to five and
points off turnovers and then 26 to 10 points in the
paint and you know that's what it's all about we help
them to 26% shooting in the second half or 24 actually
and if you do that consistently that's what that's
that formula for advancing in March.
Coach I coached my daughters I coached her high
school travel across teams she's now playing at
Northwestern it's the Indiana of women's college
lacrosse. But I am wondering here are there
challenges with coaching your own kit.
You know what he's made it easy and he came here
he was in high school the covid year so he really
wasn't evaluated and it was a tough year for all those
kids that were seniors during covid because they
you know they just couldn't get evaluated properly
and he went on a couple of visit for elite camps
the previous year and did really well and I think
was on the verge of getting a couple offers but then
they had players that took advantage of the covid year.
So he just said you know let me come and walk on
and see where it goes and if he developed maybe
a level but you know he took advantage of when we
had two season any injuries to on Gary a manual
bandimelt both went down in the middle of the year
and then that that's what gave him the chance
and he works so hard every day got in the gym
and that's what you know allowed him to play well
and really earn a spot the rotation from that point
on but he's been a part of the turnaround.
He saw this thing when it was at its lowest
and you know I'm really proud of how he's helped
us get this get this thing flipped.
