He's also in a group chat of mine.
He's in a group chat of mine.
He's in a group chat of mine.
He's in a group chat of mine.
A tennis group chat of mine, which I don't really participate too much.
Really?
My number's on.
There's probably one you don't have saved.
It's one of those 305s that you don't recognize.
I've always wondered what it was like for the non-participators to be getting like 2 a.m.
Texts about tennis tournaments in Thailand.
I don't know.
I'm just like they have to be so annoyed at these Tommy Paul texts.
Yes.
Oh, I love this.
Yours.
Is he had you get roped into this group text?
How'd you get roped into it?
You know, Mike Ryan is a very powerful human being.
And he just talked about it one day and made it sound like the best group chat ever.
And so I asked.
Like to be a part.
Yes.
He has a group chat about shitting.
I mean, everything in that one.
He put me in a group chat about like dads, right?
Like my I was about to have a kid.
And I realized I don't care about any of your kids.
Yeah.
And it felt really creepy to be getting all these texts about like look at my 1 year old daughter.
And I'm like, dude.
And I.
And then I was like, how do I just leave a conversation with these dads?
Share.
And I was like, I'm out.
Yes.
It's crazy.
The dad is fear.
So last year.
There's nothing to do with that text thread.
Last year I saw a tweet.
It said, I'm just now realizing that Adam left go and Jared Greenberg are different people.
And it had the sort of mind blown emoji.
And I never.
Confused you guys ever.
Until.
Last year at the All Star game.
I was at the game or at the event, whatever Saturday.
And this was shortly after you.
I think did some glorilla on the air.
Yes.
Right.
And so that kind of got a little bit of viral virality to it.
And so I walked up to Jared knowing full well.
He is not the studio host.
You are the studio host.
You were the one who did the glorilla.
And I just had a huge brain fart.
And I started talking about it.
And he immediately went from that fake face.
You give everybody when you're seeing them for the first time in a long time.
To how he really felt.
And he was like, that was left go.
And he turned around and like, I didn't want to look at him again.
I was like, oh, no.
I have done the thing that everybody else.
Well, a couple of people in the world have done.
And I'm just curious.
Am I a jerk for that?
Or do you get that off it?
A few things.
Number one.
Because my wife is Nigerian.
She reminds me that a lot of white people do look alike.
Even though we don't think we look alike.
So that's always helpful.
Two, you gave me some PTSD.
I was in the sauna at my gym in Brooklyn.
And this guy looked at me and he goes, Jared Greenberg.
And I was like, now bro.
That's so totally.
It's a circle.
No, it's, it's a, well, I love Jared.
He's awesome.
But that glorilla thing is also the reason that my son thinks,
when he sees TNT, he says bowl bowl.
Because I did a bowl bowl freestyle.
He helped my son also when he sees Shax as bowl bowl.
Because that freestyle went like triple platinum in my house.
My son wants to listen to it all the time.
But not too many Jared Greenbergs.
I also get the son from Weekend at Bernies.
But that guy's like older now.
So it's not the same thing.
I have to rewatch it.
Okay.
Yes.
Yes.
I see it.
I just felt like such a, but I can never see Jared again.
I'm just, I can't even believe it.
I'm admitting this to you.
No, I love.
I love.
I love all.
I left.
Left go.
I'm so happy for you because I turned on my television.
You're there.
You're the studio host for the NCAA tournament.
I've known you for a long time and put the smile on my face.
And what I see as I get older here and people are starting to ask me for advice
about how to navigate through this industry is I got into this business
wanting one thing.
And that was to do a radio show.
And I wanted to create a radio show that was appointment listening.
Meaning I used to make sure I made sure I was in my car one o'clock mic in the
mad dog.
And I wanted to try to create a show that had that kind of feeling and Dan and I were
able to do it.
But I remember feeling career bliss in the middle of it because I'm like holy
shit.
I've arrived here and they're paying me a lot of money to do something that is
so much fun.
And what I see on your face when you're doing this stuff, whether it's tennis,
whether it's the NCAA tournament, is a guy who has achieved his goals.
I know you're not done yet.
You're always pushing forward.
You're always building.
But that's what I see.
A guy who's relaxed.
A guy who has fulfilled his goals and is doing exactly what it is he wants to
do.
I appreciate that.
Yeah.
Like the first time that I filled in for Ernie and that there was like a clip
where we showed Zion and he didn't look great and and Chuck was like, man, that looks
like me and Shaq had a baby and the clip went viral and like I sometimes feel
that when I'm like in bed and like a great insight clip comes up and I'm on it.
And I'm like, dude, that was all like getting the host inside really was the thing
I always wanted.
And since I got to do it, now it's all like free cash.
Right.
But yeah, like like you're saying, there are those moments, there'll be like a time
during the friendship when our March madness where I'm in it.
And it's usually when like an analyst is talking and I look and for some reason,
I don't see the lights.
I don't see the cameras.
I just see all the behind the scenes people and they're like really paying attention.
And I'm like, damn, I'm doing that thing.
I'm doing thing.
And that is a that's a cool feeling.
It's cool that you can like recognize that.
Yes.
Well, yeah, I mean, listen, I I've experienced it.
I know it.
I know what it feels like.
It's the greatest, it's the greatest professional feeling in the world because you would do that
shit for free.
Would you not?
I mean, no, I wouldn't.
That's hell.
No.
Dude, it's so expensive.
What are you talking about?
Seriously.
For free.
Well, if I was your boss, I'm playing that in negotiations.
I'm like, look, that's happy.
No, he looks that happy.
He does.
He looks that he wanted this in the worst way.
And he's arrived there.
And that's a great feeling.
I thought you would do it for free.
I'm shocked that you wouldn't to be honest.
I would say this if I if I like that question, if you hit the lottery, would you still
go to work?
And I would do that.
Okay.
But like, bro, I would be broke.
Yes.
Yes.
I can't do that.
It'd be freestyle rapping for his life.
Oh, you got me on the corner.
You're like, bowl, bowl.
Yeah.
Perhaps I took it too far.
Sorry about that.
Go ahead.
Yeah.
No, I've had note.
If you're trying to figure out which is your favourite moment of the tournament so far,
cause to me, it felt like when the Florida Final Boss turned into the Nebraska Final
Boss that you guys loved that.
Yeah, that was, I can't this is the thing about the air, so it's, it doesn't make sense.
Like Iowa, like the nine C, they're the team that out rebounded Florida.
And then they go and out shoot Nebraska.
And you're and it's so none of it makes sense.
it's as Jalen Rose as it's one shot, one kill.
So like anything can happen.
I thought the Dylan Darlin ending with St. John's
was an amazing ending.
I think the first high point game before,
at least I realized that their white guy
that doesn't shoot twos is actually 26 years old
and they're like the richest college in the country.
I was like, wow, what a Cinderella.
Um, but I, I think my favorite moment right now is the 30 seconds
after the game when the coach is doing the post game interview.
And the players are like, I get a chance to throw a sweaty towel on my coach.
It's low key becoming my favorite thing.
And there was one that was really bad.
When Nebraska beat Vanderbilt, Fred Hoyberg's there and one of the,
the players takes off his sweaty headband and tries to put it on Fred Hoyberg.
And it's like, you see it dripping and Hoyberg turns around and goes, stop.
And then the player just goes in the back.
And I, though, I, dude, that's the thing about sports.
I love is the awkward moments because I've seen so many shots that I've seen
so many wins and losses that like knowing that this dude got yelled up by this
coach for three years.
And finally he's like, it puts a wet towel on him.
I think that's hilarious.
Speaking of wet towels on Fred Hoyberg.
Yes.
He left four players out there yesterday in a very crucial possession.
And this was, this was supposed to be the feel good tournament from Freddy
won his first NCAA tournament game.
They went on the little run, whatever.
And then that happens.
Like that's going to weigh more than the first win, right?
That's going to linger for a long time.
I, I don't think so.
No, I think, because I, I think if it had been, if that was like at the buzzer,
because I think I, I would have been, they ended the game in like a 16 to five runs.
So it was like kind of part of it.
I also don't necessarily know if it's his fault.
Like that might have just been a coach feeling like, I'm going to take the blame
because the kid was still sitting on the bench.
So it would have had no, and like, yeah, but the head coach is in charge there.
You got to know that.
Yeah.
I mean, you just, you got to count.
It was like count, right?
How many are out there?
It's fine.
But I just think you, the Nebraska fans have been hearing for like 50 years.
You're the only team that hasn't won.
And then you go to the sweet 16.
I think you're good.
Yeah.
Definitely are like Kansas, like that, none of that season feels good.
The way that that ended.
And then there's a few other teams.
I think you have these great seasons.
And when it kind of collapses in the first weekend, it turns a great season into a mediocre
season because we only judge it based on what happens now.
I'm excited to you for tonight because it's the rare final four before the final four.
I mean, that East region is loaded.
St. John's Duke, Michigan State, you got what?
A couple of games there left go.
I'm so excited to watch Rick Patino yell for two hours.
It's again, like I like the weird parts.
I like the Hurley, Micron and the L fest was so funny to be like I just thought about
the refs afterwards just completely stressed and exhausted.
I'm very excited for St. John's Duke.
I think they legitimately have a chance to pull the upset.
And then Hurley is though in terms of the strategy.
Yukon is one of the few teams that I watch and Arizona's another one where I go.
I would steal all of these plays if I were other teams around the country.
The thing that upsets me about the bracket is I just, I don't think that Yukon, excuse
me, Duke should have been the number one overall team with their injuries right before.
I thought it was going to be either Arizona or Michigan.
And now because of that, Arizona and Michigan will be a final four matchup and not what
I thought, which was going to be the national championship.
But yeah, the cool thing with the East is whoever comes out.
It's a great story.
It is.
It makes the final four.
If Dan Hurley puts it together and is trying to win it like three and four years.
And then if Rick Patino goes like, oh my God.
Yeah, but think about the way he would have to go.
It would be through Kansas, then through Duke, and through either Yukon or Michigan state,
just to get to within two games of winning a national champion.
Yeah, you have to kill him.
And then, and then I would say likely on the other side would probably be Illinois over
Iowa.
That's just where I would guess.
So then you're taking on like the tallest team full of Balkans that are just like imported
from Slovenia.
Like I watched the fact after the game, I think it was Lauren Shahadi asked a question.
The guy's like, I cannot tell you.
I'm not going to go on Illinois.
I crossed you.
Like it's so funny.
I must break you.
Yeah.
Like last night was just a bunch of like shorter guys at Houston from Texas and Florida versus
like six nine Slovenians.
And I was like, guys, this is foreshadowing like we're in trouble.
I don't think people recognize this enough like go find the closest 73 year old to you.
To me, that'd be like my mom.
She's like a year older than that.
And then imagine them doing what Rick Patino does on any given night of a basketball.
Like getting up and down and yelling that much, most 70 year olds would pass out in like
five minutes of that.
It's crazy.
I think about, do you know that health guru online, Brian Johnson, and he's like always
taking supplements and he's like, hey, I'm eating shark fin now.
And I'd be like, I don't care.
I want you to study Rick Patino.
Yeah.
What's his plan?
What's that blood type?
Cause he looks up and he looks like he wakes up and like takes a shot of marinara sauce.
And then he's living his life.
Like, no, you're right.
High functioning elderly person shot of marinara.
It's everyone else's blood.
He sucks it out of their necks.
Go ahead.
It does a bump upon a gun.
Let's go.
I'm watching this tournament conflicted as a Carolina fan because it feels like I need Arizona
to lose.
So Carolina could gauge.
Tommy Boyd's interest.
Can you hear me?
Damn.
You got him?
Test test test.
No.
Let me.
Can you relay it?
Let me ask the question that Taylor wanted to ask.
He's like, he needs, he's a Carolina fan.
He went to Carolina walk on football player went there for track, walked on to the football
team.
And he desperately wanted you, but Davis out, you're, but Davis is out.
He wants Tommy Lloyd from Arizona feels like Arizona needs to lose early needs to lose
now in order for that to happen.
But I need Arizona to knock out Duke, but he needs Arizona to knock out Duke.
I love doing it this way.
By proxy.
Yes.
That was incredible.
Yeah.
I think, yeah, you're in a no in situation.
I don't think Arizona now that he's broken through the sweet 16 and gotten to the elite
eight.
I don't think Tommy Lloyd's going anywhere.
And I also think, I think that Arizona would pony up and the NIL money would be there.
And he's also like on an incredible run.
We're going to learn a lot about where the North Carolina job is valued and, and how
much money is going to come forward.
And I do think it's interesting that this billbellic check move could really cost them
in basketball because the, the amount of money they're paying billbellic check, the
amount of NIL that they're having to allocate towards football.
Yeah.
And like, if I was to see Taylor right now, oh, this is tough.
If I was to see you have a Fortune 500 company, you need to understand like, this could
be a loss.
And, and what you learn in business is you don't pour more money into a loss, but they're
going to pour more money into the ballot check because they can't let it be a loss.
But the more money you pour into that, are you really expecting people to pour in the
basketball?
So it's, that's also where it's like, hey, Jordan, the ceiling is the roof, right?
Yeah.
Like, I hear, I hear you make a billion every year, I, can you, can you cut us 10?
Can you cut us 20?
So that's really fascinating.
I also think, and I said it on TV last night, I kind of, like, I don't know what I'm
going to say.
I kind of think Ben McCullum is lowkey becoming the, uh, Kurt Signetti of basketball.
This like long term, briefly assistant and that kind of came around and everywhere he
goes in year one, they start winning.
And you know, you could go and steal someone from Duke, but like, you could probably get
Ben McCullum for like $5 million.
And, and the thing is, too, is North Carolina has always hired North Carolina guys.
I covered Kentucky and Louisville for four years.
Kentucky was one of those jobs where like, you needed to ingratiate yourself to the
people of Lexington, but I don't agree with that.
Calipari did not do that.
Calipari was like, this is my team and my school and I'll show up and all that.
And I think sometimes when you become obsessed with finding people that fit into the culture
there, they get controlled by the culture.
You know, they're, they're so worried about impressing people that in year two when
that person like, you know, you should really cut that kid like then it's like, whoa,
I have to lie out.
Yeah.
That was like, he pulled a North Carolina accent out of it in there.
Yeah.
Yeah.
It was good enough.
Listen, it was good enough.
Yes.
But I, yeah, the North Carolina gig is, it's interesting because is that gig better than
a job in Utah where you have some of those tech founders that are going to drop $15 million
and it's a, we're in an interesting time.
The jerseys are cool.
Yes.
Listen, Taylor was hoping that you would talk them off the ledge.
He is now one step closer to the ledge.
Okay.
That's right, Adam.
One good hire.
One good hire and you're good.
Yes.
Well, one good recruit and you're good, I think, right?
This is what Taylor's going through right now.
We've all been there.
We ended a relationship that we knew wasn't good, but then three days later, you're lonely,
right?
And you're sitting at a bar and you're like, this is what I have to choose from.
Like, this is what I'm picking from and you're sitting there and you're like, but I did
want this.
And what's going to happen is like another three days later, you're going to be sitting
there on a Saturday afternoon with nothing to do, watching sports and having a drink
and going, oh, yeah, peace.
That will come.
But right now, you're looking around at a four and you're like, maybe, yes, but Taylor
needs some love.
I mean, what's Taylor, maybe a six?
Wait.
So you split up with Chris Sims and never look back.
So what does that say about your relationship within?
Yeah.
Well, you know, when it happened, I was like, all right, I'm either going to be the
Jonah Hill or the Michael Sera of this situation.
And I was like, I kind of look, like I go through weight fluctuations like Jonah Hill.
So I'm going to try and be that guy, dude, I'll, you know what I'll say to you.
And when Sims got the gig at NBC, which I think now is like eight, nine years ago, I was
just shook to my core.
Where you go?
I was like, I was like, who the hell wants to hear what I have to say?
Right.
You guys had a great show together.
Yes.
Yeah.
There's that.
And then it's also Sims, I thought was uniquely his work ethic, the way he like studied
football, like truly watching film every day, not being online and having opinions that
he really believed that we're not created to cause any controversy.
I was like, this guy is, I like working with workers, like, like, I like analysts that
truly study and they come in and with like notes, because I'm like, Oh, now we can create
something new and you're not going to just say something for clicks.
Right.
So when he, when he left, I was like, I'm going to do a show by myself.
I was like, I was like, I know my role.
I was like, I'm the straight man that can like, let someone go or I'll have the crazy
conspiracy theory take.
Yes.
And, but you know, there's that moment where you go, you're either going to believe that
you're just going to keep going.
And I think for the universe, whatever it was, set it up to where that's very soon
after NBA on TNT came and a lot more hosting roles came.
And then the shack called me one day was like, I wanted to go relationship to the next
level.
I was like, I don't know what that in my apartment, he was like, yeah, I want to do a podcast
with you.
And I was like, okay, deal.
And yeah, the universe is funny like that.
You know, I don't miss the way it would Sims would eat Chipotle bowls with like a serving
spoon from like a salad bowl.
Yeah.
You know, I appreciate not having to walk into work and Sims being like, what are you up
five pounds?
I'm like, what?
Wow.
No.
He's always checking you out.
He is.
He's always checking you out.
And he's got comments for you.
I'm learning a lot of athletes because they always are like looking at body types are constantly
sizing up normal human beings because if you ever see an athlete around a non athlete
that's in shape, they always are like, like they took squeeze their shoulders a little
bit.
They're like, okay.
And then I like, so what are you really thinking about the rest of us?
Yeah.
The ones that you don't touch and the ones that you don't ask what we do for work out.
Yeah.
Well, so that's interesting though.
When Sims left, you were at rock, like kind of rock bottom thinking, what's what am I
going to do with my ears?
Not only did Sims lift you guys, but like my producer Josh Fenger, who now is a C suite
at overtime because he's like super high functioning like incredible to his job.
He like six months later was like, I'm, I'm going to right and I, that's when I was like,
and then the pandemic hit.
So it was just like, I got to figure this out.
And that's sort of when I was like, let me just go all in with TV and really refine that
as much as I can.
But yeah, man, it's, you know, this, there's doubt that comes in stages, like you think
once you get to a certain level that you're not going to have that anymore, but the real
thing is is if you can keep reinventing yourself or keep pushing into a new, if you just don't
stop, you can outrun it.
But it definitely pops up all the time.
Right.
It chases you, right?
The industry chases you.
But if you keep working hard, you'll find the opportunities.
Oh, dude, the, do in the French open, like, like, like, like preparing for that and like
watching tennis channel every day and being like, if I say the wrong word, I'm going to
get destroyed.
When I was doing baseball and they're like, just a reminder, it's home plate, not home
based.
And I'm like, oh, my God.
And so there's, there's those little moments when you start getting ready for a sport
where you're like, this could all fall apart.
When did you realize, though, that you didn't have to be perfect, even doing, you know, even
as a studio host on TV, you have realized you've come to the realization here, Adam.
You don't have to be perfect.
You could have some fun.
You can laugh a little bit.
It's okay.
It's fine.
What I would say is when I realized that I don't need to carry the show that people tune
in for the other people, it can free you up.
Some people, it's, you go, well, what about you?
And I mean, I take pride in, but my mom's watching for me and maybe Stu got to watch
him for me.
Yes.
But everybody else wants to hear what these guys have to say.
Right.
So just get the ball to them.
Your job is to, your job is to take off the plane and land the plane.
And if between, if you don't say anything, you're actually doing an amazing job.
Right.
And so that takes a lot of pressure off of it.
I tune in for Chad Greenberg and I just wanted to check him out tonight.
This week's 16, it's in use.
He's your studio host.
He's fantastic.
I love him.
I'm happy for him.
And we appreciate your time, sir.
Next time we have you on, I just want to do 20 minutes on Sims.
That's it.
Just 20 minutes.
Sims stories, your top five Sims stories, okay?
I'll bring like different types of Sims stories, disgusting, funny, and we good.
I see him with a Super Bowl.
He looks at me.
I look at him.
I'm not sizing him up.
He's sizing me up.
And then he turns to me and he says to God, you get a comment on how good I fucking look
at him.
What are you doing?
