2:21The football season is upon us. The fantasy football season is upon us. And our buddy Field Yates joins us. He was a basketball correspondent for a couple of weeks back when the nicks were making a championship run. He's a big-time Celtics fan. How do you feel about the Celtics off-season? It's so far beyond. Yeah, so honestly when I'm debating between Beach on Robinson and Jameer, and the first take-off, I'm going to say, At the end, let's get to the top. Yeah, so honestly when I'm debating between Beach on Robinson and Jameer, and the first take-off, all this, you're in spinnestid rash, like I leaned ever so slightly towards Beach on Robinson, I'm sorry, what was the question you asked? How do you feel about the Celtics putting Jalen Brown on the sixers and making that team so attractive? That LeBron-Jayme decided, hey, you know what, I want to go to Philadelphia. So can I tell you why I might have had the most Placid reaction of any Celtics fan to the Jalen Brown trade. There's one specific reason. What? The Jalen Brown trade took place as my life was going into labor. Oh wow.

3:23The third child. Nice. So our third child is born the day that the Jalen Brown trade takes place. I mean, just all kinds of stuff happening on that day, obviously. And I think my brain would have processed the trade, probably much more angrily under different circumstances. I'm still disappointed and frustrated to this point. But I have decided that I don't get to be a fan in football, right? You don't get that opportunity now when you work in it. So for the Celtics, I'm going to put blind faith and optimism into this team and hope for the best and hope that my reaction, my gut reaction, my second reaction, my third reaction, my tenth reaction of the Jalen Brown trade, which is totally wrong. And how is little Paul George Yates doing? The irony is that our third daughter is named Tatum, not related to Jason Tatum, but a lot of people made the joke after she was born, like, were you preparing to name her Jalen until several hours before she was born and then you pivoted? Jalen was on the long list. I will be honest on that

4:28part. Field, it is so funny with fantasy football season coming up here. I have the second pick of the draft that I know you just addressed it, but that is the big question. Gibbs or Robinson, Robinson or Gibbs, Mikey is shaking his head, saying it's not a big question. There's a clear cut number one. Who is it? No, I was just going to say it's easy for you because you don't have to make the decision. It's going to be made for it with the best place to pick this year is number two because Jumir Gibbs and B. John Robinson is a good argument. You could argue for either of them as the lawyer in court, probably too much lawyer talking sports recently with this clippers situation, but I have no issue with, so I personally have B. John ranked one spot ahead of Jumir Gibbs one and two, but I had a draft a couple of days ago where I got the number one pick and I wound up taking Jumir Gibbs. The rationale for that just as a heads up, there were two things. One, I haven't had the chance to draft Jumir Gibbs at any other league so far. I wanted to have some Jumir Gibbs in my portfolio. Two, it's what we call a knockout league, which is new at ESPN.

5:33People may be familiar with this format. The lowest scoring team each week gets eliminated from the league. They are players go back into a free agency pool. Everybody has a thousand dollars of a free agent acquisition budget and then we do a blind bidding process each week for those players. So if somebody has Derek Henry in week one, their team puts up an absolute stinker. Derek Henry in everybody everybody else is available. Jumir Gibbs has an easier early season schedule than over B. John Robinson. So that was how I leaned towards Gibbs in this knockout league. But over the past two years, worth noting that Gibbs has more games with 20 plus fantasy points than Robinson. Excuse me, Robinson has more 20 plus games over the past two years than Jumir Gibbs and he has fewer under 10 point games. So he's been a little steadier of a ship over the past couple of seasons. Mikey, do you like the knockout league? Do you like that format? Because you could be done. I mean, you're excited for fantasy football the entire off season and then you're

6:33knocked out after a week and all your players are available to the good teams. I mean, is this the safe space? Yeah, it's the safe space. Of course. I'm not only in one. I'm in one that's 32 teams. Oh wow. You're a psychome. So that's a double knockout each week. Four teams get knocked out in the first few weeks. Yeah. So I would say that the only thing that I would say about the knockout is I really enjoy them. It's a different way to play. Different strategy. Obviously, I joke that in knockout leagues, if you're not last your first, right, the inverse Ricky Bobby, because no matter whether you finish 10 out of 12, as long as you're not 12 out of 12, survive in advance, the only way in which I do think it impacts my brain is people ask me all the time, how many leagues are you playing in this season? That number could begin at, you know, 20, 25. And then by the halfway point of the season, if seven of those are knockout leagues, it could be reduced dramatically. So from an accounting standpoint, I can't decide how many I should admit playing in at the beginning of the year. Feel what are the two or three questions

7:37you are getting most headed into this fantasy football season? Number, the first question is who might take a number one overall? Of course, my piece there. The second question is some form of like sleeper or bust, which I think it sort of depends on who your audience is when you answer that question. I used to say that like, I don't know, maybe a decade or so ago, you could throw the third receiver for the Ravens out there as a sleeper. And people would be like, oh, wow, man, like never heard of that guy. Now you draw like, you know, the third running bag for the Cardinals and people like, he went in the eighth round of like Keeper League last week. So you got to take a little bit deeper than that, which is a byproduct of how popular fantasy football is and just the NFL. So sleepers and busts are always a very popular question. But the one this year, the player this year that seems to be generating the most heat as Christian McAparee, are you in or out on CMC who last year, you know, we're talking about Jermior Gibbs and B. John Robinson is the clear cut one and two. Yeah. CMC was 50 points better than those guys last year. I know I had to

8:42be a one me a title. Yeah, I mean, how about that? Yeah, I mean, he was the best player in fantasy football last year. He's been the best player in fantasy football many times in his career. The question is, can you trust him to stay healthy for the second straight season? He had 400 plus touches last year. He's 30 years old, which for a running back is on the older side, of course. And I, I tend to think that all players are injury risks. It's football. I understand that CMC has had a longer injury history than guys like B. John or Jermior Gibbs where I land on it is this. It depends on like how emotional you are of a fantasy football player because if you're the kind of person, so let's just say, and I don't want to wish this upon anybody. But if Christian McAparee gets hurt in the fourth week of the season, people that draft them in the first round are going to say, God damn it. I did it again. I should have known better, right? Whereas inversely, if Almanra St Brown gets hurt in the third week of the season or the fourth week of this season, and has to miss some period of time, four to six games, you're going to say, I got unlucky, right?

9:45Almanra is rarely, if ever hurts. He's been so incredibly consistent in his five years. Yes. So it just depends on how you sort of view the world of fantasy football. If you could be a little more more robotic, and just say a better player is worth the higher pick. It takes CMC. Yes. If you're going to kick yourself because you're emotional, and I'll be the first to admit, sometimes I am emotional in fantasy football. I'm often very emotional. Then you can hedge against how pissed off you'd be if CMC gets hurt by taking Jonathan Taylor or Almanra St Brown or James Cook somewhere in that same range. Field of word, you have AJ Brown ranked among fantasy receivers because the pairing with Drake May feels like a match made in heaven. Yeah. He's wide receiver 10 for me. So none of the surprises inside those first 10 picks of wide receiver. If he's kind of going the same territory as Rashi Rice, Drake London, Malik neighbors, George Pickens, Chris Elave, those are kind of the receivers surrounding AJ Brown and rankings and where they're being drafted right now. AJ Brown feels like one of

10:51a handful of guys that is playing with the proverbial chip on his shoulder more so than most. This year, I think Lamar Jackson might be in that category as well. You could make an argument that after the playoffs, Josh Allen could be in that category. But with AJ, like he's still amongst the best deep receivers in the NFL, crazy that over the past four years, AJ Brown's average receiving touchdown was 24.6 yards. Like the guy is a big play threat waiting to happen. You go back to last year and tell you know this from his college days as well. Drake May is about as good as a deep ball thrower as we have in the NFL. He's incredibly, incredibly gifted on throws down the field. He had a pass rating of 131 last year that was easily best in the NFL. And it wasn't like Drake threw, you know, he wasn't in the bottom five of the attempts where good fortune could explain how how statistically prolific he was. He was way out there. He's seventh in past attempts on throws, 20 plus air yards down the field. So really talented deep ball thrower with arguably

11:51the best deep ball receiver in the NFL. Once you get past week one against Seattle, I think things look really, really promising for AJ Brown. I'm going to be a little selfish here because as I do all my research, I tend to develop man crushes on guys later in drafts especially. And I've got my guy this year and I might be a little too enthusiastic about him. So I'm hoping you're either going to a confirm it or or or talk me down or lie. Yeah. Jadarian price. I'm all over Jadarian price. I like him too. Yes. Am I hitting myself? Am I looking at my jaw? Yeah, no, no, that's I mean, one of the things I try to remind people that play fantasy football that aren't novices, if you have a minimum sort of baseline of football knowledge, you're going to be okay. And it's your team. You should follow your logic in your process. No team zero zero teams last year gave the football to the running backs more often as runners than the Seahawks. They were tied with

12:54Atlanta for the most running back rushing attempts in the NFL and wallets a new offensive coordinator and play collar with Tinkubi acting loss. Maybe I just like, I don't think Mike McDonald was going to hire an OC after waiting the Super Bowl to totally reshape the offense. The approach should be the same for him. And while Zach Charbonne could fill back into this backfield at some point, Charbonne coming off of the ACL tear late last season. Like, we'll see when that happens. A, but B, like the other running backs that are currently competing with Jadarian price for carries, George Hullani and a manual Wilson who they signed from the packers this off season. So this is not George, excuse me, a Jadarian price competing with, like, you know, not that I'm anti-Jerimai love, but Jeremiah love. Like the Cardinals gave Tyler Algera a real contract this off season before they drafted Jeremiah love. Like there might be games where Alger has 15 carries to loves the 13. It's not totally implausible. So price finds himself in a really good spot. Two

13:56biggest question marks a pretty straightforward for Jadarian price. One is he had six catches last year. And the question is, did the newter name not throw him the football because he was in Cadeville or the noter name not throw him the football because they had Jeremiah love. I tend to lean towards that second argument over the first. The other thing is fumbles were a problem for price in college. And you guys all know this. It's amazing. Like NFL coaches cannot tolerate fumbles at all. Like a guy could be running for 150 yards and half. And then he fumbled the ball in the third quarter and you never see him again. That that. So if price can't keep his fingers on the football, then he could be a bit more vulnerable. But it's a really rosy opportunity right now. What round do you have, Desha, I love going in. I had him in the third year. It was it was tough though because like have you got seen him on routes? Yes, on the beat. Because I'm with the top of the. Yeah. Yeah. Like I feel like he did. He's a perfect fit for

14:56Brock. I just think he's like really crisp and at a break for the timing and rhythm quarterback. You need to run a wide receiver that always hits his landmarks. Derrible like to my knowledge, he didn't miss a single game last season. So I had him in the third round. But I've reached for him in the second round on occasion. Especially since he cleared all three parts of that waiver. Yep. Field. Carnell Tate finished preseason. Zero receptions on six targets. How concerned are you for Carnell Tate entering the season? If I were to make a list of players who stock has dropped the most for me in the preseason. And this is all relative, right? I'm not talking. I had him as I think wide receiver 23. He's not wide receiver 53 now, right? But I have going to flip flop my Titans wide receivers that I want most going into the season. I think Carnell Tate's going to be an absolute stud in the NFL. I thought it was very pro ready. I just think this offense is going to take some time. And Wanda Robinson is going to be awesome for the Titans again. If he has

16:00credit, he kind of graduated. I think Wanda Robinson for a while was viewed as like this gadget slot only receiver. You saw my last year, he was awesome. Super productive for the giants, stepping into a bigger role with Malik neighbors out. He knows the offense, obviously already. There's no concerns about kind of being excuse me fully caught up to speed. So I'm going to flip flop him and Carnell Tate. I've drafted a lot of Wanda Robinson so far this year. Tate is going to be really good, not concerned about the player long term at all. I just think this is going to be a slower role into the NFL than I had previously forecasted. 23:19Field, how do you feel about this? Mike EA, his son was doing a draft, his dad for help. Dad was supposed to be a sounding board. He didn't want to get too involved. In the second round, his kid took Garrett Wilson and Mike EA ripped the computer from his hands and took over the draft. How do you feel about Mike EA doing that? Oh man, he is a great father. He's a great father. He's doing it from a place of good spirits, right? That's a tough one. You got to teach your son now. You have to show him the way, right? Because I think you have to decide at this moment and probably perform the draft, but it's a sunkoss, so we're going to move forward. It's like until the Jets turn things around, do you tell your son just no more? Because I can't let you be hurt twice, right? Like the Jets don't win. Right. Garrett Wilson has three catches for 30 yards. Yes. You're going to be so friggin ripped the next day. You're going to be so pissed about that. In some ways, you actually just draft whoever his least favorite team is, probably with the

24:23Patriots, like, tell him to draft direct May and AJ Brown, right? Because if those guys go off, his fantasy team is probably doing great. If those guys stink, the Patriots are coming back down to earth, so draft, you can take this step further. Josh Allen, Dvon H in, AJ Brown, whoever you think is the best AFC East tight end, like just keep nailing all the AFC East players. And if your team wins or they win, I should say they perform your teams going to do great in fantasy, if they don't, then, you know, the Jets might be frisky or in real life. All right. It's a win-win. You're right. Yes. Between my fantasy leagues, the Jets and my betting, I try and finish 500 by Tuesday morning. Okay. And I'm usually about 500 because I'm a pretty good fantasy player and I root for the Jets. Well, I'm betting you're about even as well. Yeah. I mean, it is strategic. I tell you, it really is. I kind of go through

25:24over each year. I kind of adopt a different strategy to account for all that stuff. Like there have been years where I have tallied in like a spreadsheet, which I'm not exactly the most proficient spreadsheeter, but I found out a way to like calculate my record week by week and over the course of the season and all my fantasy teams. And the reality of what I do, and I think people don't necessarily understand this when I get invited to play in a league, is that, like, yeah, you know, this is my job. Just mean that I'm going to win every league that I play in. I'm still, you know, I'm still beholden to the fortune of what happens weekend and week out, injuries, all the things that go into fantasy success. But you started the real life. You're like, man, like just a couple of bad teams can like really tanker overall record. So this year, I think I'm just let to go. And I'll certainly know generally how each team is doing. I don't think I'll be counting it meticulously as I have in the years past. Right. Field, last time we had you on, we pitched you on the idea of bank the tank as our NBA correspondent.

26:26Yesterday, we came up with the idea. Instead of the clippers just vacating the pick, we want that now to be a part of the in season tournament. And Steve Balmer has to present that pick to whoever wins the in season tournament. You're out on that year by year. So I've ever win the season. I mean, guess the clippers pick. Yes. So, so I'll tell you this, like, maybe this is this is probably not top of mind for the NBA. But that picture exists somewhere, right? It's one fewer player who gets to realize his dream every year in the NBA draft. Because, you know, 59 picks now is opposed to 60 until there's expansion. I just like get that pick. Incisude somewhere, whether it goes to to your point, whether it goes to the team that wins the in season tournament, whether it goes to the team that has the most wins relative to their record the prior season excluding the clippers, find some way to reward somebody with it and make sure that Balmer is presenting it. What a story that was I've listened to probably, I don't know, six hours of clippers content to the last 24

27:31hours, which is approximately five hours and 55 minutes more than all of the clippers content I listened to in the first 39 years of my life prior to yesterday. Right. How about this? Whoever has the best record against the clippers, they get the pick. I mean, that's amazing. I think it's a tiebreaker. Think it everyone's best shot. Good. I'm a distal because it's put you got to make it point differential included, right? The thunder at the tiebreaker just out of the end of playing 48 minutes in a meaningless otherwise game from like early January and you're like, why is she in there? Where is 152 is 64 and the fourth four? This makes no sense. Be amazing. Right, but that's a tiebreaker. Correct. Meaning if you get three and no against the clippers, we're going to point differential. Right. Yeah, exactly. You're correct. A feature part of the MC's internment so far that and that and the people getting angry at the courts. Yes. Like, I don't have as strong of it as thinking on the courts as most do, but I see these people getting

28:32so frustrated on the internet about the courts. I'm like, I promise you your tweet is not going to come down. The NBA is going to be arena right now and change the floor. They're just not going to do that, but they think they can make a difference. They do. They do. Yeah. They should do. And you're telling them they're not. Sorry for crushing hopes and dreams right there. Oh my god. So good. Give me some guys, some sleepers here, field. Some guys that maybe people aren't thinking about that you think are going to have big seasons. Yeah, I mentioned Wanda Robinson as a player that's going like later than where I think he deserves to go. It's going to be steadier than I think he's being given credit for. I decided that for me, generally speaking, like outside the top 100 on ESPN is a good place to find a guy that you believe is a sleeper. If you're going to 11th round or later, sleeper-ish Kenneth Gainwell from the bucks. It's got everybody's favorite sleeper right now. Sneakily was fifth in the NFL and running back catches last year. Not about a runner as well.

29:32It just hasn't been giving a ton of opportunities. Not exactly sure what to make of Bucky Irving there in Tampa Bay right now. He was awesome as a rookie. He was good the first four weeks of last season and then really fell off. He got a bad double with his sort of mysterious health situation as well. But just flat out wasn't as good a player last year as he was in his rookie season. There's all kinds of quarterbacks that could be considered sleepers. I think Jordan loves going to have a big year this year. He's being drafted super late. The Packers off season has been very sort of passing game centric. It did not add any running backs of notes with the prospect of Josh Jacob missing time facing them all off season. It got more attention recently in that resulted in him being placed on the commissioner's exempt list. But I don't think like this team is totally surprised by what's taken place. Jordan loves one of my favorite guys and then you know tight as there's a million names and like four of them will end up mattering. But a deep league,

30:34deep league sleeper would be Gunner Helm. Another Titan hero. I just think it's going to be good this series. It's a capable player. The Titans signed a blocking Titan Daniel Bellinger away from the Giants should be Gunner Helm on passing game opportunities. As they likely is now with the Giants another name that's being drafted lower than I think he deserves to be. A lot of reporting this summer that he's kind of in the go to guy for Jackson Dartes. They've been dealing with life without Malik neighbors on a full-time basis. So as they likely in Gunner Helm a couple of names that I like as well. Field as a fantasy football expert and somebody who also plays fantasy football. How do you balance the fact that you're giving all this advice on sleepers knowing that people in your leagues might be listening to this same advice? Well, I don't think it matters as much in sort of it matters but not quite as much in standard read drafts where you're just it's a snake order. You just make a pick because I can always sort of like jump to the head of the like the front of a line to pick a player if I really want that guy. But I was doing what we call salary

31:36cap leagues also as auction leagues recently. And I noticed that the guys that I was targeting are I would have targeted. And I never I should say never. But I rarely nominate a player for auction that I actually want. I'm usually nominating somebody that I want other people to spend money on. But I did notice that a couple of the guys that I went into the draft targeting were going for much higher than I expected because I think I've just talked too much about them during the preseason and some of my buddies in that lead cut wind of it. Three kids huh? I mean three kids listen that's why I got to come back on the show. I got bills to pay you know. Yes, at some point the royalties will hit my my mail box. I'm just trying to tell you to slow down. I mean that's all just we're done. We're done. Okay. All right. Would you want to rank the kids? I mean what criteria we go with today? You know how much like EPR-E-D-T? Yeah. Is it sweet patterns? Is it eating habits? Yeah. I tell you. Yeah. Anybody with multiple children can attest

32:39as you know. Tell me. And I will tell you. Yes. Yes. That the hour changes by hour I'm certain. Yes. Yes. 100%. You work for the Patriots. You work for our bellicach. You know Bill very, very well. You know Taylor was a walk on football player at the University of North Carolina. It begs the question is Bill Bellicach back. Tell you what? Lock going on with the program right now. Obviously. That was a nice window over in Dublin. I know the T-C whatever maybe T-C is in middle of the pack team in the big 12. But you know I felt personally and Taylor may disagree, fully agree. Offensive operation looked a whole lot better this year. Just felt like a real offense. There's still downplayers like as I look at the guys that are eligible for the upcoming draft right now. I don't know there's a guy that's going to go in the first three rounds. Maybe some day three picks there. But it looked way better offensively to me. Defense I wasn't going to be as concerned by because you know, Bill Bellicach is playing a large, large role in it.

33:41But offensively I felt like the Bobby Petrino higher. I mean football standpoint was on the play on Saturday, not perfect, but definitely better. Yes. When you say a lot's going on, you're talking about the throwback uniforms they released yesterday, right? Those 1980 uniforms. They look good. They mean the color scheme in the uniform, the entire uniform set is as good as there is. Maybe just in sports, like not just college football. It's elite elite. Carolina blue and a top tier color. No doubt. Where are we spending the Labor Day weekend here? We're going to a tuck-it Cape Cobb. What's going on with the Yaches? I wish. I wish. We'll be home. We'll be home. We'll be home through some drafts and trying to keep kids get kids to sleep and eat, and then continuing to rank them throughout the weekend. All right, buddy, we appreciate it.
