Good morning, Michael.
How are you doing today?
I'm great. How about yourself?
Fantastic and very excited to share a conversation with you
because when I first started combat karate all those chapters ago,
you were the one that my master would,
he would always put our focus on you.
And because he felt like that you were the guy
that was going to show those who were trying to do Taekwondo
and combat karate,
what the art is all about.
And until I started following you and listening to him,
I just thought, oh, we're just out here kicking butt.
But in fact, there is an art to what we do.
That's why it's called martial artists.
And you get that credit, sir.
Wow, that's a high praise, thank you.
But you have to understand though
that what is the dividing line between the two?
Because you know how we are when we get into those schools?
We all think we're there for one reason
to win tournaments and collect trophies.
But you took it to an acting level.
Well, yeah, well, I mean, I look at martial arts
as a thing that enhanced your life.
And so it helps everything and all aspects of life.
Because it's about that discipline that you drive from it.
And yeah, you might end going into it.
You might think about the self-defense thing of it
and all of that and kicking butt.
But then really when it comes down to it
it's you overcoming obstacles, you know?
And you got to do that.
And you got to do that solely.
It's not a team sport.
So your levels that you're belt and all that type of things
are just kind of represent those obstacles.
And you apply that in life and everything's about
overcoming obstacles and your biggest obstacle is yourself.
When you start adding it as your life
that's one of the first things that happens.
You start putting your shoulders back where they are.
You start walking up straight.
You've got courage.
You've got confidence and your dad's not having to remind you.
Hey, look, this is what you need to do.
No, I'm learning this in class.
I'm, you know, I stand up straight because of class.
Yes, yes.
And you carry yourself with an honor and a dignity.
Yeah.
And that's what you bring with the Oscar show.
There is that honor and dignity in this.
And you can feel it right away because all of a sudden
it's like, you know, you've got to be a viewer as well.
Where you sit there and you see somebody on a screen
and boom, you're attracted right away.
And all of a sudden you start following their story line.
Boy, thank you.
Thank you.
But to be in those shoes, those might, Michael,
what is that like to be able to, you know,
because you've got a director around.
You've got all those cameras.
You've got to be able to turn it on and make it happen.
Yeah.
I grew up in, like, looking at these, these bigger than life heroes.
When you have the Charles Brownsons, the,
Yes.
You'll bring knowledge to these bigger than life type people.
And, you know, and it's no mistake that a lot of these people,
they came from something.
They, these were men who overcame things.
I mean, you know, you got the Steve McQueen's and all of that.
And you couldn't take your eyes off them because it was a life essence.
It was something that was tried and true about these characters.
And, uh, and most of the time you were right.
There was something deeper that that, that actor who,
as the man that he is had gone through.
And I'm, and maybe, um, maybe the way I've, uh,
the discipline of, I've had, um, growing up and things I had,
I had to overcome.
Um, maybe some of those things bleed through in the characters I play.
And, uh, and, you know, and therefore, I mean,
it provides another benefit.
Yeah.
Now, but, but how do you make your characters so real?
I mean, it's, it's like it, you're not playing a character at all.
I mean, you're, you're just going in there and you're being you.
And, and, and we, and then as viewers, we're trusting you.
We're, we're living through you.
I mean, instead of, you know, it's like,
Oh, he's just acting his way.
He's just an actor.
No, I don't feel that at all when we see you in these movies.
Well, honestly, that's very close to who I am.
I got, I got to play.
Well, I was almost a, uh, a police officer myself.
And I've been close to law enforcement my entire life.
My, my brother just, he just, uh, retired, uh, he was a secret service.
And some of my best friends are police officers.
And I've, and I, and I just, I typically train with a lot of cops.
And over the years, I've probably,
teaching martial arts.
I've probably taught close to a hundred police officers.
You know, so how to, uh, govern their, their, you know,
their, uh, apprehensive skills and everything.
Uh, it's because, and then, you know,
that confidence that they need to be out there.
So, I mean, I've, I've been very close to it.
And I don't know, I mean, and there's something that supersedes it all.
I think that, that quest for justice that, you know,
I, I live my life in a way that I know I would, um, sacrifice,
or I would, I would risk my own life for, for innocence and justice.
Yeah.
So I, I, I get a chance to play something that's really close to who I am.
And so I'm, maybe that's what you're seeing in Oscar Shaw.
Because like, like I say, I'm, well, even as the actor that you're speaking to,
I've, I've sought to, I, like, I trained with law enforcement.
And I, and I've been, um, I've been, um, trying to be a, um, a reserve cop.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
But all, but, but all of the things that I do,
reserve cop.
Yes.
Yes.
Yes.
But, but, but always, um, I had to, uh, my, my, my primary, uh, work superseded it.
And there's times every time I had started it up, I couldn't finish because I had to do a movie or something.
Yeah.
Well, I mean, even in, in Oscar Shaw, in, in the way that one of the things is that your character,
like a martial artist, you don't instantly react.
You actually, I can physically see you probably because I'm a martial artist.
I can physically feel you step back, observe the situation, way out the odds, get a decision, make things happen.
I mean, that, I mean, if, if we had more people that did that in an everyday world and really studied your characters,
my god, it would be such a, a, a peaceful place.
Yeah, I think so.
I think so.
Um, but, you know, like I said, like I mentioned, there's a lot, um, in martial arts,
in martial arts that, that is part of who I am.
Yeah.
Um, yeah.
So in, in, in life, that's the way I'm, that's the way I move.
Yeah.
And so my responsibility as an actor is to, you know, imitate humanity, honestly.
So, uh, beyond the page, I have to present something that I feel is real.
And I feel like if you're not really going to put that effort in, why do it?
You know?
Yeah.
Uh, I would ask for people's attention and, um, and not bring all you can to those projects.
I mean, I'm, I'm, I'm so blessed and gifted to be in this, uh, in this, uh, in this, uh, entertainment business and, uh,
and have this opportunity to do what's, what I wanted, when I, what I, you know, strive to do.
So I'm, I don't take it lightly.
So I, I definitely, sometimes with, with, well, like I say, when you can put reality in there,
you're, you're respecting everyone's time.
Well, I totally believe that your eyes are a major part of the acting.
And in the way that, because as a martial artist, when you see things move, your eyes will go to that.
And there are so many times that I will watch your eyes go to something that has moved.
And to me, you're furthering the story.
You're growing the story because we could have easily missed what we, what would just moved.
But your eyes caught it first.
And therefore, through your eyes, we were able to follow along with that story.
Thank you.
Yeah, it's, it's interesting.
But like in a story like Oscar Shaw.
Yeah.
And when I'm really using reality to be my tutor, uh,
there are things that, there are, there are, there are realities that come up that the, that the script can't, can't really, uh, predict, predict.
And so, as the movie would go, I would sometimes go with these things that, and, and, and veer from, uh, the text.
Like, um, like you'll give me an example.
Some of the things I'm saying to these kids, I've actually said to kids like this in reality.
And I veered from that and would, you know, would do a take that is basically improv.
That's, that's, that's, I know it's real to me because I've kind of lived it.
So, like, in the, in the final thing that I say to the, the, the kid who's holding up that, um, that store, none of that was in the scripts.
Oh, boy.
Uh, but it is, but it, it, it, it was stuff that I have said before.
Um, and I, I thought was, was true.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And, um, so we went with, ultimately, they went with, um, you know, this, this stuff, I, I, you know, the dialogue that I created.
You see, I love that about writers and directors because if they're open enough for you to be you, Michael, then, then that tells me as the viewer that, that we can invest in more into that character because those writers haven't lived in your shoes.
So we never been in a ring or wrapped a belt around their waist and those days when that belt doesn't want to wrap around your waist.
They, they don't know any of that.
But when you walk into that role and you bring something like that with those kids together, all of a sudden it becomes my God in heaven.
He's, he's real here.
This, this is good.
Well, yeah, I mean, I think that's my responsibility.
And, and I, I'm one of these people who like against all odds have lived through these things.
Um, I was a former school teacher and I, and I literally talked, two guns from students.
That, that, that, that came over to me because I could just tell by the way they walked on the way other kids were looking at them that they were on.
Yep, yep, yep.
That's because I, I know street language. I know these little subtleties.
Uh, and I've been blessed to have lived through it.
And so now I can bless other people to, for, you know, to experience some of what I have in, in movies.
And, and I love being able to do that and to say, hey, this is what, what really happens in these situations.
And, and, and this is what I believe is in the hearts of some of the kids who are very much like me.
I think we've just opened up a can of worms.
Please do not move.
There's more with Michael J. White coming up next.
You, me and Tuscany is a brand new romcom from Will Packer, the guy who produced Girl's Trip.
The movie stars Hallie Bailey and Reggae Jean Page and has all the ingredients of your favorite romcoms.
Heart, huge labs and sizzling chemistry, set in the enchanting vineyards of Tuscany.
It's the movie escape we've been waiting for.
And the perfect film for date night or a night out with the girls.
Get your romcom on with you, me and Tuscany directed by Cat Coro only in theaters April 10.
Tyler Reddick here from 2311 Racing.
Victory Lane?
Yeah.
It's even better with Chamba by my side.
Race to ChambaCasino.com.
Let's Chamba.
The name of the movie, which is now on demand, is Oscar Shaw.
We are back with actor Michael J. White.
You bring up a very interesting point, Michael, in the way that when you sit there and you know the street language.
That means that that story actually started 25 feet before that in the movement that they were making,
which caught your eye in the first place.
And then it signals your brain saying something's not right.
That's what I mean by watching your eyes.
In the way that you see something that we did not see.
And now you've included us inside the storyline.
Absolutely.
I mean, like I said, it's a blessing to get that chance to convey there.
You know, because it's things that I've experienced that I can now share with the world.
Yeah.
So now, is there a side of your creative personality that you wish that they would reimagine this and turn it into a bench watch of some sort?
Because I could handle four or five seasons of this.
I mean, there's just something about this that says, yeah, I got this.
Oh, yeah, I mean, I would love to do a series.
I mean, to me, this feels like a series.
It feels like something that I would love to really sing my teeth into.
And you know, we've seen the convention for a long time.
Things change constantly.
And sometimes the convention doesn't change.
It's still kind of left behind.
And I can't fault people because not a lot of people have come from the mean streets.
And so we can't expect a lot of writers to deliver like 100% on reality.
But it's great when somebody can.
And when you can work together and you can bring something that touches people.
Because this has been proved the response for this movie has been pretty amazing.
And I think it's because a lot of people recognize the truth in the movie.
Don't you think that during your board breaks and brick breaks during your different black belt tests have proved to you that when it comes to acting,
it's nothing but another board or a brick and that you can get through this.
It's not about going around or above or below, but go through it and make this acting moment happen.
Well, that's with everything in life.
Yes.
That's with getting a third job to feed your family.
That's with everything.
You know, every time you think that you're done, you know, just like because what you put yourself through
and it's in some martial arts that you have a lot more than to reserve.
Yeah, when your body, when your brain says, you know, I'm done.
No, no, you're not.
You know what I mean?
You can go much further.
And you only experience that by jumping through or just walking the burning sands.
And so life, you know, I had to say it like, but life is kind of designed to make things easier for people, right?
And so people don't have rights of passage and they don't, they're not, there's no draft.
There's not things that really force you into adulthood or manhood.
And that's why it's been a great thing with martial arts that gave me the discipline that, you know, you kind of had to reach out and grab because it shouldn't be something that's comfortable.
And life shouldn't be that comfortable, right?
And so, yeah, but you, you know, you got to be tested to know who you really are.
And so, yeah, like that's why I say martial arts is a mainstay and it was such a great thing.
Especially for kids or anybody just developing to try to find out who you really are.
So, you know, it's, and hopefully through training martial arts, you're provided with more obstacles and physically and mentally that, you know, tougher obstacles than the world is going to, you know, throw throw at you.
So, you get used to being able to overcome those obstacles and your biggest obstacle is yourself.
You know, that's, that's your biggest opponent in your entire life.
That's a good lesson to learn.
With Oscar Shaw coming out on demand, does that mean that this fall we're going to get the Oscar Shaw fashions to have in our own personal lives because, dude, you carry fashion well.
Oh my God, you are like the Steve Harvey of this new generation.
Well, thank you.
Wow, that's great.
I love to do more of that.
A lot of praise goes to my wife because a lot of those were my real clothes.
Yeah, so, you know, I, you know, I try, you know, I travel.
And, you know, I always, like I say, man, I'm so blessed to be able to do what I'm doing.
I like to give my all to any, anytime I, I am, I'm working.
And so, it's, it's a collaborative effort that's, that's really infectious for me.
And so, yeah, there will be a wardrobe department, but a lot of times this wardrobe department might not have things that have been tailor made or, you know, for me.
You know, so I'm gonna, you know, I say, hey, well, I brought some things and, you know, tell me what you think.
And so, in me being the character, I can't put that on anyone else.
I know what the character is, you know, and the character style.
And so, I bring things that are like, that's really good for the character.
And, you know, movies nowadays, they, they have to be made on, at a fraction of the time of movies of, of old, right?
And so, you know, everybody leaves their house.
Everybody on, and, and, and every department leaves their house.
Their love, their loved ones to, to get together to make some, some art.
And I respect to that. I'm gonna do everything I can to do the best I can.
And to honor those people who have left their homes and make it an experience that they're proud of.
And so, if that means me bringing clothes that have been tailor made for me,
to, you know, make it better for the wardrobe department and everybody else involved, that's what I'm gonna do.
See, I get to do that.
And that tells me deep inside my soul that you believe in the mantra.
Winning is a choice because everything that you've shared today,
it's, it's all based on the power of choice.
Yes, sir, yes, sir.
Yeah, and, and just really a man, it's just, it's such an honor.
It's, it's so hard to do the thing, to, to make it in this industry.
Yes, sir.
And, when I look at, like I say, the people who are working hard and some of the hardest workers are the crew members
who get there before the actor, they leave after the actors.
And so, those are the people working the hardest.
So, there's nothing that I have to do that I think that supersedes that.
And, you know, we're all equal in that regard.
So, I'm gonna do whatever I can to honor those people.
So, I mean, I always say it's like we all ran away and joined the circus
and now we're making a living at it.
So, it's a blessing.
So, yeah, I mean, I, you know, I think it's, it's just what I enjoy doing.
And, and, and, and, you know, the odds were stacked against myself
and pretty much everybody there.
So, I really, really want to honor the time that I'm spending.
As well as the, the time that the viewers are spending, you know,
I want to honor all of that.
And so, I want to do the best I can and provide as much truth as I can.
So, you know, it's a blessing all the way around.
You got to come back to this show anytime in the future, Michael.
The door is always going to be open for you.
Well, thank you.
Thank you.
