leader dot com at KNBR the sports leader app Murphin Marcus is sponsored by Big
a low T grab a mug and T proudly I'll talk to most of the guys already on the team
great great players great dudes I knew I knew a lot of them from pro bowls and just
you know seeing them around the league after games and things like that but
George's was the biggest salesman I mean George sold it big time and he's a
big reason why I'm here just because the type of player in teammate that he is
freaking George Kittle man I mean what doesn't the guy do he's like one of
the most joyous players we've ever seen with the 49ers somebody you know I
was talking to Steve Kettman who's a long time sports writer in the area he used
to cover the A's for the Chronicle for years and years he just wrote a new book on
Dusty Baker you Dusty Baker's life story in fact we're going to have Steve on this
coming few weeks and then we're going to have Dusty on in June when the book comes out
it's called Crossroads pretty cool because you know if you're down with your your
Robert Johnson and blues guitars and Dusty you know man yeah come and call my bio Crossroads
because I'm cool like that you know that's typical Dusty but he was saying um he wants to do
something on George Kittle I hope I'm not spilling Steve Kettman's business plan and he asked
me because let me ask you a question he goes well what's the appeal of George Kittle I was like
when I'm on the couch now like Barbara Walters here but I was like he made me spitball like why is
George Kittle appealing and so I don't know I mean I gave the answer I think everybody else
would get it there's a the joyous the joy right it's like we why we like the Dominican Republic
in Venezuela in Puerto Rico when they play baseball right he's fun I said first I was really
freaking good starts with that you can be joyous and be a third stringer you can be joyous
to me in all pro right so it's rare that you get a guy of that talent level also be that
fun likable enthusiastic I would just say maybe in the Super Bowl you know maybe maybe pop
on a phone roll instead of riffing you know but hey George small potatoes yeah yeah Merff I'll
pick you back off of that and I'll say George Kittle is relatable you see the tattoos you see
Calvin and Hobbs you're like oh I grew up reading those comics also you see the halo tattoo you say
oh I'm I love playing those video games you the Joker tattoo it's like there's so much relatable
stuff with the wrestling like think about baby Huey and Mike Holer and even myself to a certain degree
who grew up on WWE and WWE what's he singing's Avril Lavigne skater boy like on a mic on the
spese one time no I mean on the field one time I think and then he did a since you've been gone
with Kelly Clark's what it was at the spese but yeah and like me personally like not saying like
I can relate to him but because I was a blocking titan I played titan in a wing tea offense in
high school when I was still playing football like I always appreciate good blocking titans and
that's why I've always argued for years that George Kittle was the best titan football because of
what he does as a receiver and as a blocker but even if you weren't a blocking titan in high school
like I was you can appreciate his game his effort and everything he does overall for this team
and the culture of the 49 right so there he is getting Mike Evans to the 49ers right so that's
one of the many things that's come out of the NFL owners meetings just going down down in Phoenix
where John Lynch spoke where Kyle Shanahan spoke where Jed York spoke here's Kyle Shanahan himself
on Mike Evans you just played Mike Evans coming back talking about George Kittle recruiting him
and this is really I mean we had Jennifer DeLeach and had some brief comments from him after that
flag football game but here's Kyle with the beat riders at in Phoenix oh yeah actually a YouTube
video on this hey you know hey now we had a couple of people come up to us at the round table or at
the the Friday morning broadcast and yeah I watch you guys every morning like yo you watch us every
morning and they watch all the great footage that young Tony throws on the stream every day well
here he is Kyle Shanahan in doing that classic conference room you know hotel ballroom conference
room 745 am you know every frickin business convention ever yeah I got to go down to the breakfast
of 730 down the conference room yeah man you know I'm hungover and ever they're kind of muttering
at somebody with a badge around your neck you know what I mean then you complain when you show up
and there's no coffee yeah I'll do it and I need some damn coffee I will bitch about that
all right here's Kyle on Mike Evans definitely a whole thing is as good as it gets in the weight
plays I'm always just like competitor and Mike that's what it means talent and everything
is separated over really just how he's going to work every day just the people I know who's
practiced with the ways in the building how more football is doing I mean the fact that he chose
to come to us just for the football situation stuff shows like how important football is to this guy
when you have veterans and we got a number of veterans I love the thought of pairing him up with some
of the guys that to be our plan for one reason that's to try to get used to. Yeah I mean my
this and this thing like the only knock on this guy is the birth certificate right that's it
and they're we've gone through this from the when he signed there's any number of great
players that have been incredibly productive at age 33 including the 49ers did this with
Yankegon Bolton just 10 years ago and you know what we don't even talk about Jerry Rice at age 33
the guy was shattering records so yeah and there's other guys who are banged up at 33 and last year
he was Andrew was kind of a freak thing there was a clavicle break it wasn't like consistent
problems with this quad or something like that and I'll say this too usually especially when
we talk about wide receivers getting into their 30s we talk about them maybe losing a step with
their quickness with their speed with their overall 40 time Mike Evans has never been a burner he's
not a guy that is known for four three speed like we know he's one of the best jump ball wide
receivers in the game so he's bringing a whole different element to this offense and really what
I'm so excited about it's just having a no nonsense wide receiver in the building like after
dealing with the divas and the Brennan Ayukes situation and Debo Samuel wants more money
Juan Jennings wants more money and everybody wants more money and Mike Evans said I'll come to you
on a team discount because I want to win some damn football and be quite frank Ricky pierce
those inconsistency you know his inconsistency here's a guy who's absolutely the portrait of
consistency was 11 straight thousand yard season so he's dead and listen I'm gonna give
Jed a lot of credit he has really grown as have we all right have we grown Marcus I like to think
I've grown Mark young Tony have you grown I don't know you know you can see absolutely how
I can tell you're a belly's grown we all know Jen me had a big dust up back in 2014 it was 12 years
ago I think it's time to smoke the peace pipe and have him back on although we did have the urinal
summit where the day they hired Chip Kelly I went into the cavernous bathroom in that huge sweet
level and Levi's stadium and the only other guy at the urinal was Jed me and him just
me and him awkward little awkward first of all you know it's always tough sometimes when you go in
there and you get stage fright yeah and there's nothing coming out you're like I had an incident
like that the other day because it was one of those bathrooms it was at a golf club it was at a
golf club and it was one of those old men's golf clubs you know we're like yeah man walk around
nude let's let it all hang out so the troughs were very very bare troughs no walls are in there were
solo troughs like you you went into a solo ceramic trough I thought you guys are right next to
a guy and the two of us just both we had an a stage fright off either guy could know the either
guy could pee a drop oh do you try like crack and a joke to ease attention I use your dropper
cold and then they say and then the other guy says and deep yeah and deep but anyway the the
it's a jet and I say we had that moment there but other than that he's grown and to the point
where he told the story about letting we all thought when he tweeted out about the Seahawk game
remember that this will never happen again we apologize we're like to get Barry and Harbaugh like
that turkey on the 50 yeah yeah yeah and then you know when he punched a wall this and all this
sort of performative stuff now he's 2026 to the point where he said he found out about the Christian
Kirk signing when he was on an airplane watching like a TV on the back of a chair he goes wait we
signed Christian Kirk he didn't even know and he goes but that's the autonomy that he gives Kyle
and John that he didn't even know he said you know here's your money here's your budget go do what
you want so that's that's a real growth so here he is talking about offseason spending and talking
about Mike Evans Jed York cut D down there and and things we actually have a video of this and by
the way you can catch a little Eric Branch there in the background we're in his penguin shirt there
here you go Jed York I sure we tried to assess where we wanted to spend money and we we chose
mainly to spend it on our own guys and you know when you're locking up your quarterback you know
to Hall of Fame players and Fred and George I bet that's where we chose to spend our money
right they didn't want to lose Dre last year loved Dre super excited that he's back and that's
how this league works right I don't know that the folks that we signed in pre-agency just text
with Mike Evans I haven't gotten them meet him in person yet somebody that I've known
and respected for a long not known but I've respected his game for a long time the guy wants to
be here he wants to be a part of a scene that can go compete for when a championship like that's
what we're looking for and you you have to be willing to be flexible in who you're going to
sign how you're going to sign them and when you're going to do it and we're always going to be open
we want to be nimble enough to be able to make those decisions and I think we had it some good
guys this year and part of that is you know what you spent last year it all sort of ties together
when you're spending money how you're spending money and you just have to be smart about that
and I think we've taken a good approach okay yeah I mean last year was was the year they they
they but Kyle was on record saying he's enjoying this year a lot more than last year when
everybody walked out the door yeah last year they had to trim the fat off the roster because they
finally had to pay Brock Pertie so there were some tough decisions got like Dre Green
Lodge her various ward and other names out there as well tell no who Funga who ended up leaving
to Denver Broncos but this year they've kind of reset the cap and now they have the financial
flexibility to go out and add a few pieces to two things I want to get before we get to Mike
and Dwayne and Dwayne at 730 and Mike Cruko at 815 and that is one John Lynch did say on Sunday we
didn't talk about it on Monday because it was such a freaking Yankee sweep the Giants day he said
about the substation we're safe we're in a safe place of work the levels I think I read in the
report are 400 times less than unsafe zones so it's a normal place of work it's a normal gem we're
safe we're healthy he did say he didn't he never revealed who did the study never revealed the name
okay all right the other thing is that I don't know if Jed York's just trying to roll a smoke bomb
out there speaking casually or negotiating but when they asked him about Brandon and Euk he said
quote I would like to see him play for us like to see him play for us he said we paid him for a
reason I think he's a really good football player whereas Kyle was saying earlier yeah we're
going to hang on to him and see what we can get yeah so let's see if you can talk up that trade
value at all and see if you can get a seventh round so you're saying pure negotiation yeah this is
all a bluff Brennan I you've not playing another snap calling Jed York's bluff yeah I'm calling
it all right yeah put your chips on the table you seem as a raider Brennan I don't know I don't know
I don't know what team wants to see him in a uniform to be honest all right man fun stuff man fun
stuff more Niners coming up with Matt Barrows at 930 of course draft three weeks from Thursday
guys and the tremolium thing remains unresolved too all right back to the Giants Tony V we said if
you put two V's together you get Tony W his first win he's in a cart getting sprayed with stuff
getting champagne winning a game sweating out a Ryan Walker ninth inning and we'll talk about it
with Dwayne Kuiper who was in San Diego calling the game next on the sports center we believe the
list to have life this morning the grass green and trees is blown the pool water heated all the
trucks is filled up with gas premium hey there I'm Paula Pan I help people make the smartest money
decisions possible do not ever worry about your salary you need enough to make sure that you
aren't in a bad financial position once you have that your salary becomes moot what matters from
that point forward upside gains any type of ownership stake or ownership potential that's the money
remember you can afford anything just not everything afford anything follow and listen on your
favorite platform there's no question we've got the best in the boot that's why we all mimic his call
time for Murphy Marcus to catch up with Kai on KNBR1045FM at 6 a.m sponsored by Bigelot grab a mug
and tea probably all right you know what we we just have this running thing like on Tuesday mornings
on man we got Kipe after a loss we got Kipe after a loss we got no no no we got Kipe after a win
baby he looked great down in San Diego it's great to have him on the scene at Petco Park calling the
games with Mike back in San Francisco always going to hear those two working together and he got
to call Tony Vitelos first major league baseball win welcome to the show Tony V and the
Giants first win of the season so Kipe all good all around welcome back how are you hey morning
Kipe yeah not just a win the win the win that hard that first of anything during the baseball season
can sometimes be the hardest whether it's a hit whether it's a save whether it's a win whether
it's a home run and for Tony Vitello I mean look these three games into the season and he's
thinking that you know if we go on 162 then we got a problem but I think everybody regruped
a little bit on the day off on Sunday Giants got in the San Diego Saturday night so they had all
day Sunday I mean we're literally attached to the ballpark so players can go over and
pyjamas didn't play either so they had the whole stadium to themselves I have no idea what they did
but whatever they did they sure looked loose and relaxed in the ticket field and that always helps
and look you get you get your first home run and you get two two out base hits to knock in
the second and third run in those two hits came from two guys that were all for nine
yeah so you walk away with the win and you realize that you know that Yankee series was a
series where they couldn't get that hit they come in here they get that hit and and everybody
goes home happy yeah they've lost nine straight to the Yankees in San Francisco I'm just going to go
ahead and call that a bad matchup get them out and get another team in here the Padres so
Kype I want to jump to the end I know I want to get to Roop and Walker and Schmidt and all those
guys Bailey Bader but get to the end did you get a chance after you left the booth to see Tony
V or anybody yeah from the party after the game I'd love to hear any post game anecdotes or color
you have well I mean look I I know that they did their traditional thing they threw them in a
laundry cart and you know did all the stuff that you do the fear and fraternity but they've been
doing that you know for years with a guy that gets his first win or guy that hits his first home run
so that that all happened while we were still doing the post game rap on our way out David I
stopped in the clubhouse when it went in his office and and he had just really
gotten finished with talking to the media and you know his hair was wet because he had all the
stuff in it you didn't have any shoes on so he was kind of walking around like he'd just come from
the beach and he was really happy super super happy and and you could tell that this took a
little weight off his shoulders and I told him I said I asked him I said what's your what's your
drink of choice and he said well he said then I said no I said seriously I said I got nothing to
do today I'm gonna go to one of the good liquor stores here and I'll buy you something that you like
and he said well I'm kind of a whiskey guy I said all right well that's all I need to know
so that's my job today is a little bit of a celebration for him and he was happy to let me tell you
but I mean nothing real earth shattering they're exciting but David I really felt like we needed to go
in there and shake this hand yeah you can find them some good Tennessee whiskey to celebrate his
first win in the big leagues but Kypy actually wanted to go back a couple days after one of the losses
against the Yankees he said there was a lot of emotion and a lot of try hard in the clubhouse so
maybe was there a not just additional pressure on Tony Vitello to get his first win do you feel like
maybe there was additional pressure on the team to get Tony Vitello his first win and maybe there's
pressure being relieved not just from the manager but now the entire ball club moving forward
well yeah I mean I think you're right in all accounts I mean look that win can be so hard to get
and then when you get it you realize that the win really affected everybody from
the players to the starting pitcher to the guy I got to save to the you know our fans are fans
that are here are fans that are listening fans that are watching and then of course
when wherever Tony Vitello goes it's all about the fact that he's never been in pro ball
and he doesn't have a win you know so you got to you got to clean that up right away if you can
and unfortunately they couldn't do it at home but for the longest time this was their second home
not so much now I mean we had another crowd of over 40,000 I mean they're drawing big time here
but but it's a long-winded answer to yeah you're right in all accounts it was big forever
buddy let's talk about the closer because that's what all the textures want to talk about today you know
Ryan Walker went into this year not with a hundred percent certainty we were saying giants fans
going into the season were like oh man I don't know about the closer I don't know about the closer
and the giants didn't necessarily say 1000% that he was I think Tony V had been on record saying
as he will use the guy he thinks he's right he said I know Miller can do it I know Walker can do
it so he went with Ryan Walker last night and there was two stories to it okay the one was he got it
done they won the game the other was he walked the lead off hitter and gave up a homerun he almost
hit a guy too and quite frankly got a little break when Fernando Tetsis didn't challenge what
should have been ball three so your reaction I guess my question to you is do you feel like the
closer role is still a little bit situational or do you think they want to make Ryan Walker that guy
and if so what'd you think of last night well he'll close tonight I mean I think uh you know
that look if you go back to that ninth inning yeah you shouldn't walk the lead off guy
but then you can't walk another guy so he has to really throw a fat pitch to Jackson Merrill
and if he hits it out he hits it out you still got to lead you can't walk him
so look yeah I mean in a lot of ways I'm not that surprised that Merrill hit a home run he was
going to get something fat to hit so you know he did what he needed to do and you always hope that
that pitch the guy's going to pop it up and steady knocks it out of the park and now now you got
you know you got another guy coming up in Bogart who can tie it up with one swing
so look the closer role maybe a work in progress all year I mean if you got a couple other guys down
there that that look like they get a shot to do it and Walker's failing a little bit yeah I mean
they're the jobs open but I mean look if you've got Dennis Ecclesley or you know you got Trevor
often you know you don't worry about that spot in the ninth inning but there aren't that many
guys around like that so that spot is always going to be open and it's always open on a lot of
different teams not just this one Ryan Walker closed out the game last night but it was Landon
Roup who was back on the bump at the big the level for the first time that we've seen him
Kyve since last August when his season ended taking that line drive off his knee and I got to say
maybe that was one of the best outings we've seen from Landon Roup just when it comes to mixing
up his pitches the usage of his change up the usage of adding a cutter now as well Kyve what was
your breakdown of seeing Landon Roup back out there for the first time in quarter while well first
of all do you know where he threw his last pitch last year yeah right there right here on that mound
yeah so you know he's going out there thinking you know this is not the greatest place in the world
for me now look he made Adam and thinking that at all he may even think about what he needed to do
and he was great you know we we see him throw I mean he loves to throw that big curveball
and and I think the league you know starts to sit on that and he didn't throw it that much he
threw a lot of change ups and cutters and then of course he threw strikes of the five starters
the giants have he's the one guy that's got some medicine bum-garner in him and they need that
and if he had three or four more years under his belt you would see more of medicine bum-garner
in him and it's going to happen and that's a good thing so good for him I mean he threw his tail off
last night and it was great because you could see that he's definitely bounced back from
the injury that he had last year I mean the sky's the limit for this guy not just stay healthy
and and that's what the the staff is going to have to do to make sure that he does stay healthy
it was a huge outing in so many ways you know for him to bounce back from the injury for the
giants getting off the snide for him to do it to a division rival on the road and it was just an
awesome performance by him but man everybody breathed easier on the offensive side when Harrison
Bader left the yard guy and did you have Harrison Bader and your pool as the first giant to Homer?
No I had devers yeah you know and look that's that's probably an easy choice but when you
get into one of those pools it's probably not going to be the guys you think you know it's
it's going to be Schmidt or Junghu Lee or Bader but Patrick Bingley right towards the bottom of the order
but I don't know if you had a chance to stand next to Harrison Bader yeah we did in Scottsdale
he's next oh my gosh he's got one of the more unique builds in giants history really
he is thick for a guy that moves like a dancer in centerfield
yeah yeah so it's going to be fun to watch him all year another guy that you got to keep on the field
if you can he's got a little bit of an edge you know and I told you guys
when the giant signed him that when he first came up with the Cardinals I hated him
I mean he did all the stuff at second when he got a double and yeah and that's what you know
this guy you can have him well I'm glad I'm glad they got him now because he needs a little you
need you know sometimes a couple of edgy guys is not a bad thing and although it isn't shown
any of that but you know what they've only played four games so he's got plenty of opportunity
to tick off the other team kite four games into the season we've already seen Tony Vitello
shake up the lineup a few times Luis arises bounce around from the lead-off spot to the three
hold to hitting clean up yesterday Willie Thomas was in the lineup hitting lead-off yesterday
has there been anything that has really stood out to you or maybe guys you like in certain spots
the first four games to the season I don't know you guys can look back at this
and I may be wrong but I don't think any of the four extra guys have gotten in bad you are
correct sir I mean I know that we've had a pinch runner in all of them and that's it
so I mean look you're gonna play nine all right if you're gonna play nine then the only way that
you can mess around with the lineup is to move guys in different spots and and basically that's
that's all we did and you know it can be important I mean so he puts the diamonds in the lead-off spot
you know now you got to come up with a reason why and a lot of times the reason why is
because we want to change things and you know look they got to win now did the lineup everything
to do with it you know who knows but you got to figure that Susak is gonna get a start
within one of the next two games you know you just don't want to wear out Bailey you know in March
and you know and he's not a guy that's gonna wear out I mean he could play for a while but
you can't let these guys on the bench sit because otherwise they go super I mean you're gonna go
still when you don't play but then you're gonna go super stale so I think you're probably gonna see
some changes in the next couple of days only to get those guys to feel like they're part of the team
and and it's really important you do that yeah I mean Dan Susak you they have a day game Wednesday maybe
you do the day game after the night game Jared Oliver did pinch run Jarar and Knessy and we haven't
seen him Christian cost we haven't seen Marcus had a great line because we said it's interesting Jarar
I guess it was one of the guys who spoke to the clubhouse after the game Marcus said he has more
post game speeches than at bats this year so it's kind of funny well you need a spokesperson and
you need one in English and there you go there you go and you know what you need one in Korean too
yes that's right we do I know young Tony's got his great question for you coming up but just last
one is Keaton win in the eighth inning always like a good eighth inning guy going back to my 1993
Mike Jackson I was like a good eighth inning guy you know and I know it's only one inning but
he you know he might be hired was Mike Jackson good or what oh give me Mike Jackson with a
lipper right now right now I'd take him tonight was nasty but Jackson and you know what Keaton
win was nasty last night too and you know look I know it was the bottom of the order that's fine
just big league hitters and and he man he'd dispose those three guys bang bang bang so again
keep him on the field and and if that's his inning that you know run him out there until you
know he you know he doesn't feel comfortable doing it anymore and he may be a guy that could be
in that eighth inning you know forever he's got that good stuff so you know you almost forgot
about Keaton win yeah and then he shows up healthy and spring training and you realize that
you really had something with him when he was healthy and we saw it last night for sure and
maybe we'll see it again tonight all right is that time for young Tony he on Wednesdays at 715 he
asks us the questions of the week but when Kipe comes on he's got one final question what did
young Tony ask Kipe today let's do it all right Kipe Tony we got his first win as a big league
manager last night for you as a player do you have any good stories about your first memorable win
well you know I unfortunately I wish I would have been a Cleveland in 1975 for their opener because
that was Frank Robinson's first day is a is a black manager in Cleveland and he
it's a home run because he was a player manager I missed it you know I was in AAA my first memory
and I think I've told this story before is is being introduced on opening day as you run out to
the the foul lines to stand and you know you look good I mean you you make sure that that full
length mirror is in full use before you run out onto the onto the first baseline and I did I
mean I had everything lined up tight you know here to looking good and so you know they they
introduce you I get introduced first I was leading off and then Rick Manning get introduced and
then Buddy Bell and you know I don't know so now they introduce the extra players and we got
we got 70,000 people so now the introduce Dennis Ecclesi and you talk about looking real good
Ecclesi looked in real good you know he had the long hair and oh my god and he was he was
19 maybe 20 and he takes one step out of the dugout and he falls on his face come on Ecc
come on and all of us you know look it's something day you're kind of tight we weren't tight after
that he was almost like you did it on purpose to get everybody to relax but anyway he got up
he took a bow and he ran out out of the line with everybody else now I probably should have a more
memorable moment than that but that was good that's pretty good also by the way on opening day
in 1980 I charged the mound whoa who was the pitcher was it Steve Busby?
Taylor Moore okay all right Taylor Moore he was the left he was hard to see and he came up
it in and I went down and he didn't I you know I lean on the ground I put my palms I'm like what are
you doing yeah and it's look I'm not a fighter you know and I'd rather give somebody a hug and a kiss
and in front of 80,000 he does the two hands where they he's saying well if you got something to
say come out here and say it okay oh and that he does it for all those people oh man got a
choice now I got no I gotta go I gotta go go I ran a buck martinis pull me down and then it was
oh heck broke loose but that was it that's really done we've ever done it and I knew then I
probably would never do it again that is so awesome man great stuff see young Tony delivers again man
awesome stuff all right guys well listen you got a head to the liquor store and get Tony his
special and Marcus is right Tennessee whiskey I guess would would not check off a couple of boxes
there get him something that tastes good and has a little personal meaning to him you know what I'm
going for California whiskey whoa welcome in the board maybe there you go who are who's the best
California whiskey I'm not even totally sure maybe with you know what whoever it is they can be a
sponsor of this segment yeah all right you can get him some of that Steph Curry Wow there you go
gentlemen's cut yeah you're working working working okay we got to keep the lights on here
best Salvador would be so proud oh he's he always is right billed wire would be so strong I never
got to meet the great build wire top California whiskey's according to Google and AI Redwood
Empire whiskey Sonoma distilling company St George spirits out of Alameda Savage and Cook from
Maryland here in Vallejo alley six and Sonoma gold bar whiskey that's Greg Poppaz and San Francisco
LA Beach Burberry we don't want that one so yeah you go any one of those any one of those
it'll be something good and you know I for this one I have no problems spending some
cash yeah make it memorable and then maybe you guys can share it and maybe he'll pour you a
little a little finger yeah he did say yeah let's let's have a pop together I said well what if
I come down in the ninth inning you laugh by the way he's a part of our regular rotation with
buster and Zach Manazion and Larry bear we're gonna have him Thursday mornings so we look
forward to it you're gonna have Tony Thursday morning yeah Tony yeah yeah and we're sure looking

pitch hammers one to deep left field and it is gone off the facing of the second level
the Giants have a run the Giants have their first home run of the year
and it's one of the new Giants Harrison Bader's one and no the pitch Bailey lines wanting to
left field that's going to be a base hit Chapman coming around third a little stumble for Chapman
but he'll score it's too nothing Giants the pitch Schmidt hits a ball hard on the ground up the
middle into center field base it Lee comes around third he'll score Bailey around the third he's
there ahead of the throw Schmidt delivers three nothing Giants Ryan Walker throws swimming
there's a high drive in the deep right field and that ball is gone here's the pitch there's a
smash on one hop to short Adamus has it and throws him out at first and the Giants get their first win
of the year hey they did it everybody good morning eight o'clock crowd the Giants three the
Padres to we can call it in for you guys we've been talking about it all morning a little bit of 49ers
to as that barrels will join us at 9 30 is the owners meetings are going on but the story of the day
by far Tony V he comes Tony W which a listener parted out if you put two V's together it looks
like a W so gets the shower from the team gets a bottle of champagne from Willie Adamus gets a
speech from Matt Chapman and Gerrard and Konasio and gets a pledge from Dwayne Keifer that he's
going to go out and to a liquor store today in San Diego and he asked Tony said what do you like
and he goes well if you're going to ask me he goes I do I do have a taste for whiskey oh yeah
and young Tony is serenading him with some Tennessee whiskey but Kypes said no no no no he ain't
a volunteer no more he's a golden stator he's going to get him some California whiskey which
less led to a string of texts from everybody listing their favorite California whiskey and I
would say I'd read all the texts but I'd prefer a buy first from an advertiser before we do right
so Paul from Pleasantons on the case but yes everybody's saying of course we've had a history with
gold bar whiskey and great papa and so people are saying redwood empire is up there and
St. George's and all these other great California whiskey so welcome to town Tony welcome to he
joins John McGraw in the all-time win list how about that he joins Bill Terry in the all-time
win list he joins a frickin Leo Derosher on the all-time win list he joins
Bill Rigny on the all-time win list gay
Dave Kapler Danny Ozark who we talked about yesterday
right not you stole my rip honey oh man that's good I was waiting to drop that one
that's really good guys there's some obscure ones out there too we had to
should be well not obscure Jim Deborah was a great giants but but he didn't have a great year
so shout out Joe out to Belly and the whole crew and of course a couple of guys named Dusty Baker
and Bruce Bochi too right so welcome welcome welcome Tony that was fun you're listening
can be I am a can be our FM San Francisco these sports leader a cumulus media station and of course
with all the good there's some griping with Ryan Walker's performance in the ninth inning Tony
just played it right there hey Tony V himself said listen you just got to get to the barn you just
got to get to the finish line he did he said that these guys have I'm quoting micro chip in them
that tells them how to finish a game and if we're being honest we have to remember Brian Wilson
there's a reason why we called it torture you give him a three run lead he'll load him up and give
up to before he nailed it down now Brian Wilson also saved 40 plus games set a team record
won a world series so Ryan Walker's not there yet but to you the bigger story last night Marcus was
it Tony V getting his first win and the giants finally getting off the night or Ryan Walker freaking
out fans it's easily in my opinion Tony V getting his first win of his big league career because
we're going to talk all season long about Ryan Walker hell the ups and downs that we saw last year
where he blew seven saves and 17 opportunities we knew that this was going to be a big test for
Ryan Walker this year which is why the two of us agreed at our giants round table on opening night
there's more pressure on Ryan Walker as a player than anybody else but there's absolutely a ton of
pressure on Tony Vitella we've never seen a manager make the transition from literally being a coach
to a manager and less than a season going from drinking Tennessee whiskey to now maybe getting
himself some California whiskey to celebrate his first win and I think there was some additional
pressure and maybe Tony was filling that himself even after a few of the Yankees losses he goes look
I give a big raw raw speech maybe there's been too much try hard too much emotion well yeah it's
emotional he wants to get that first win but I think there was not just pressure on Tony Vitella
there was a sense of pressure on the clubhouse as well Matt Chapman William Thomas these are leaders
in the clubhouse who have bought into the Tony Vee philosophy they've been two of the biggest
spokes people out there for Tony Vee so maybe there was a bit of a pressure inside the clubhouse
too going up to the plate with the expectations that we got to get our manager a win just so that the
media stops talking about every single move that he makes not to in fact Chapman had a quote after
the game saying we got it done now we can just go out and start winning yes you can just focus on
playing big watch John shaded a good job John say San Francisco standard everybody support local
journalism he fixed his camera phone strictly on Tony Vee for the final out and he rolled tape
for about 90 seconds and so you got to dissect everyone on Tony Vee's moves if you're into this
frame by frame you know and his first thing was to shake Frank Anderson's hand that's his long
time buddy from Tennessee then he just started shaking every hand Jason Tingler Ron Washington he
started dapping up people I couldn't even tell who they were then he went to the player line and
I noticed that all the starters who came off the field stopped to bro hug him Willie Adamus gave
him a pretty good bro hug which I thought was interesting because Willie got pinch run for on Saturday
and there was like a little bit of bad blood on that but apparently not you think about it yeah
Willie and Willie and Tony went to freaking Korea together yeah I mean you got a bond over an 18-hour
flight or whatever 10-hour flight and hanging out in a foreign country like that I but they have
to have some degree of closeness oh absolutely and I didn't really the reading to that much as
there being bad blood I mean Willie Adamus was asked about and he goes look Tony's the manager
he made the decision he made the move and we're going to live with it that's not the reason why
the giant's lost again you think he's a little miffed I honestly I didn't read too much too
little I didn't read too much you can have listen we can have little disputes yeah young Tony and I
have disputes do we still work together it happens a couple of times a morning there's like always
a little it's just not done it now there's a little seeding tension between us I'm kidding I'm
riffing I'm riffing you want greatness for all of us you know what I mean go wash creative tension
bring in Steve Young right and make it piss off Joe Montana right but anyway so anyway you know
do they really like them do they really love him he had an interesting quote where he said some
guys have been a little slower to come out of their shell for me I was like oh that's it you know
listen that's human it's human right anybody knew we talked about this earlier in the show there's
26 guys in there they're all alpha males they're all competitors they all want to have great
careers in the bigs they're not there to frickin play you know jacks do you guys even know the
game jacks oh I know jacks you do yeah uh-huh toss the ball up and pick up the yeah with the like
little like little like little star man yeah yeah yeah but not playing jacks in the clubhouse they're
there to win and if Tony v can't help them win they're not going to be into them they're going to
be like dude I'm trying to make money for my family I'm trying to carve a legacy for my career so
get me somebody who can get me some wins yeah I mean that was probably the number one question
with bringing in and hiring Tony Vitello can he get the club to buy what he's selling these are
all big leagueers with big time egos and big size bank accounts like they're looking at this
coach coach who's coming over with no background and baseball why should I believe you you want a
lot of games in college you have it one jack squad at the major league level well if you want to get
people to buy into what you're selling to believe in your message it all starts with winning ball
games winning is the ultimate keyer if you win ball games that's how you're going to get people to
buy in not just in the clubhouse within the organization but also with the Giants fan base yeah
the other rest of that quote was when he said he said these he said some guys have been a little
slower to come out of their shell and he said but maybe here it is some of these guys have been
a little slower to come out of their shell with me but it's little moments like that or breaking
camp or opening day where I think the bond grows a little bit at the end of the day we want to be a
strong unit I really get a sense this group is going to get a lot closer together as the year goes
on that's supposed to be Tony V super power yeah and it definitely felt like last night was a
bonding moment. It's the first time you win as a full team and Tony Vitello shows up with the
Italian Greece in his hair and he shows up barefooted to the post game president racist that's his
words those are Tony's own quote come at Marcus Italian and I didn't have to mention the beer shower
but yeah I mean I remember my first time going out drinking with Murphy Mac after one of the shows
it was a bonding you experience it brought us all closer together there you go but even when I
ordered the tuna melt yeah that's all y'all and then we went to Gino and Carlos and
oh boy and you left behind the mixtape from Pauli Mac yeah I did yeah and a couple other things
you left me on a few things but we do you know Carlos there's they were pouring liquid into a glass
in a kept coming on over not stop but that was an ultimate bonding experience I felt like it made
us closer as a morning shot four and five says all is good in the world the Dodgers lost the
giants one I confess I didn't even see the Dodgers lost the Guardians last night like the Dodgers
all right all right I got that too and seven oh seven says hey don't forget Tony V's managing the
bullpen pretty well so far he's dead he's dead yeah the bullpen eight three one eight three
one says I'm going to need Tony V to cut about four to five minutes off his post game interviews
he definitely will wind around a few times. All right guys so listen that's the big hit but we have
a bonus should we say a bonus feature for you today microco on a Tuesday he had an appointment
yesterday so he's doing Tuesday Wednesday Friday this week and we get after Kipe which was great
and Tony asked him a great question we had a lot of good times and but we get my Kruko now who
is also on the call last night so my Kruko bonus next on the sports leader. Hey there I'm Paula
