Shark Week Horror: Jersey Shore Attacks & Unsolved Sea Mysteries | Thursday Thrills

The 1916 Jersey Shore shark attacks, Sydney’s Shark Arm murder, megalodon legends, and sea-monster mysteries surface in this Shark Week edition of Thursday Thrills.

The journey begins with the “Twelve Days of Terror,” when attacks at Beach Haven, Spring Lake, and Matawan Creek killed Charles Vansant, Charles Bruder, Lester Stillwell, and Stanley Fisher and permanently changed how Americans imagined danger in the ocean. The responsible species—and whether one shark or several were involved—remain debated, while the events became permanently entangled with the cultural shadow of Jaws.

From there, Henrique Couto investigates the 1935 Shark Arm case, in which a captive tiger shark at Sydney’s Coogee Aquarium regurgitated the tattooed arm of murder victim James “Jim” Smith. The evidence pointed investigators toward Patrick Brady, but no one was convicted and the crime remains unresolved.

The episode also separates real shark biology from aquatic folklore: the Black Demon of Baja is treated as an unverified cryptid, megalodon as an extinct prehistoric shark rather than a hidden survivor, and the Stronsay Beast as a famous carcass disputed between sea-serpent witnesses and a basking-shark explanation. Greenland-shark longevity, bull sharks in rivers, and sand-tiger embryos that consume siblings prove that the documented ocean is frightening enough without turning sharks into villains.
