The San Jose Sharks Audio Network is proud to present
Sharks Instant Replay.
Highlights from the most recent San Jose Sharks game.
A great win for the San Jose Sharks.
Final score.
Sharks 7, Montreal 5.
The Sharks beat the Canadians
in their very first meeting of this season schedule.
The next one will be on March the 14th in Montreal.
A set out crowd of 17,435 was on hand to enjoy this one.
It's time now for our Instant Replay
to tell you how it all happened tonight.
Montreal would take a 1-0 lead 6-18 into the first period
when Oliver Kappenden beat Goldtender Yaroslav Askeroff
with a hard wrist shot.
His 19th of the season assisted by Uri Slavkovsky
and Mike Matheson.
Matheson ended up with three assists in the night
and a strong performance for Montreal.
But the Sharks would tie the game at 15-32
when Colin Graf reunited with Maclin,
Setabreeni and Will Smith picked up his 16th of the year.
Here's Will Smith moving in.
Settling pass.
It's Graf.
He scores.
The Sharks win the draw.
That's the key.
But Smith moves in and Graf has his stick down
and Smith hit the backhand side of Graf's stick.
No chance for Dobish.
And the Sharks have even the score 1-1
with 4-28 to go.
Great goal by Colin Graf.
His 16th of the year.
Smith and Setabreeni assisting Maclin getting the draw.
Winning the face off.
We said it in the Sharks.
Warmer pre-game show was going to be important.
It happened a couple of times.
Yeah, they were big in the face off circle tonight
against a strong Montreal team.
It was 2-1 Montreal at 509 of the second period.
When Philip Dano took control of the play
and scored his 14th of the year.
And it was assisted by Mike Matheson and Jake Evans.
The Sharks were unfazed by the fact that they were down
by the score of 2-1
and Caulfield tried to make it 3-1
but Ascarov came up huge.
Suzuki got it back to Caulfield.
Across the ice, Demidoff was there, couldn't get the puck.
Fed across the ring.
Oh, what a save by Ascarov.
At a one-time shot by Caulfield doing the splits
and keeping it out of the goal.
Much to the delight of the fans here at SAP Center.
That was a terrific stop right there.
And that might have been the game.
Yeah, I know.
For sure.
It could have changed the whole complexion of it.
But Michael Misa would come back.
The Sharks 18-year-old extended his points
streak to four straight games with another brilliant finish
after some great work by his line-mates,
William Eclan and Tyler Tafoli.
Sharks able to break it out.
Here comes Misa with speed, but there's a good backcheck
by Anderson.
Got a piece of it.
Misa recovers, walks into the zone,
drop pass Tafoli, shoots one.
That is a big block in front of that.
Now Misa shoots.
He scores.
Michael Misa pursued the puck after his first opportunity
and he snapped it through people
and had gone by Dobush and Misa.
Now has a four game points going straight.
And the Sharks have tied the game to two.
Big goal by Michael Misa, his fifth of the season,
Eclan and Tafoli assisting.
And maybe I undersold the efforts of those two assist guys
because of the block by Montreal on the first shot by Tafoli.
But Tafoli lifted a stick and Eclan in traffic,
just won the puck, won the battle, 50-50,
and got it right to Misa driving down the center lane.
Yeah, we said that was the key to the game.
The goal tenders the way they've been playing
is you got to get to the front of the net.
Eclan's not the biggest guy,
but he was parked right in front of the net and caused a lot of that.
So that was a 10-26 of the second period.
Michael Misa, his fifth from Eclan and Tafoli,
tying the game to two.
Eclan Setabrini has been one of the best players in the world
all season long, both in the NHL and at the Olympic Games.
And he would continue that streak tonight
as with 18-23 gone by in the second frame,
Setabrini would get some good work from his linemates,
get the puck, and then do the rest himself.
In the shark zone, work free by San Jose,
Will Smith gathers in his skates, one on two.
He's able to control it, dropped it back, Setabrini.
A great move, gets loose, moves in.
Shoot, score!
What a job by Maclin, Setabrini.
Will Smith won the battle on the near boards at center rice
and made the only play he could.
He got it back to Maclin, Setabrini.
He made a brilliant move through traffic
and then reached in and got it off of the pad
of the gold-tender Dobish and threw the legs in in.
And Setabrini gives the sharks the three to two lead.
That is goal number 30 on the season for Maclin, Setabrini.
What a goal for Maclin, Setabrini.
His 30th of the year, Colin Graff ended up getting the only assist
even though Will Smith made the play.
Apparently it hit a Canadian stick or something on the way
and Graff got a piece of it and Setabrini ended up with a puck.
But it was Will's intent to get it back to Maclin.
I'm on Maclin, Setabrini's line.
I'm giving him the puck all night.
Yeah, again.
And it was just you setting a great play.
Sometimes you're not always touching the puck.
It's about body position and there Will Smith on the wall
able to create space for Maclin, Setabrini
to be able to punch through.
And so the sharks would take a three to two lead at that point.
But only 25 seconds later, the sharks would appear to blow the game open.
Here comes the sharks in.
Now, they score!
Alex Windberg, right out in front of an end.
Now, keep for Sherwood moving in and that was the play.
Just off of the face off, moving down with a minute 12 left.
Somehow Windberg got open right out in front of a goal
as the play came into the corner.
Sherwood won the puck behind the net.
It worked loose.
And the Canadians thought they had the clear down the ice.
But the sharks would get it back.
Orlov would rush it up the right side with the play off the boards
and suddenly the chase.
Sherwood deflected it and a perfect pass to Windberg in front.
A beautiful wrist shot gets by Dobish.
And Windberg makes it four to San Jose.
What a goal at 1848.
Just 25 seconds after Maclin, Setabrini scored his 30th of a season.
Alex Windberg notched his 12th and he's got a two game goal scoring streak.
Keeper Sherwood got the only assist.
That was his first point as a member of the sharks.
And San Jose went into the second period dressing room on top four to two.
Then on to the third period.
The sharks got on the power play.
And they would make it five to two.
Back to Orlov on the top of the point.
Feet Setabrini right wing half boards.
Moves into the circle.
Frozen in front.
Kim Star will Smith.
Behind the defense gets a perfect pass from Maclin, Setabrini and Smith.
Bings it in.
The sharks are up five to two.
That's a power play goal for Will Smith.
I call that a cerebral goal, Scott,
because Will Smith kind of pointed a stick back to the point
as if to say go back to him.
And then he filled the hole and put his stick down.
And Setabrini knew what he was going to do.
Gave it right back to him through the seam that was created.
Maybe in part by that bit of,
shall we say disruptive communication between the two players?
Yeah, a little bit of deception.
They're trying to throw them off.
They're creates just a little bit of time and space.
Plugs it back door.
And just a great job getting his stick and his feet on that to put that into the empty net.
Will Smith has 19th goal of a season.
Setabrini and Orlov assisting on the power play at three
29.
Remember the sharks came into this game with a really putrid result on the power play
over their last five games.
Only one for their previous 16,
but they would crank a couple of ones into the net.
That was Will Smith getting the first one.
Ivan Demadoff is one of the most talented young players on the Canadians roster.
And he would show exactly how he can do things by himself that few players can.
The Canadians had a man advantage at 502 of the third period.
And Demadoff would put the Canadians back in the game.
Dickinson couldn't clear it.
Comes back to Suzuki.
Now back to Hudson for our side shot score.
Demadoff.
A perfect one-timer from Hudson.
That's a power play goal from Montreal.
The score is the sharks five of the Canadians three.
Demadoff's 13th from Hudson and Suzuki.
You know, that might have been the prettiest goal of the night.
What a perfect shot.
Yeah, he didn't have a lot of room to put that in and he smashed that.
And Ascroft made a big save late in the game on a similar shot.
Well, it was five to three at that point.
Remember the Montreal Canadians had come back 19 times this season
when losing at any point in the game to win it,
including eight comebacks in the third.
And they would try their best to do it again this evening.
In fact, while the shark scored two goals 25 seconds apart late in the second,
after Demadoff scored here to make it five to three,
Alex Newhook back to health ended up getting 118 seconds after that.
Here come the Canadians moving in.
They score.
Secondly, Newhook coming down the lane gets the pass and gets it off of Ascroft and in.
So two quick goals for Montreal to the third period and all of a sudden it's five to four.
That's right. Newhook getting his seventh goal of the season.
Evans and Goolee assisting on the play and all of a sudden the sharks were kind of backpedaling
with Montreal charging back to try to even things up.
And even them up, they would.
On the power play, Newhook would get his eighth of the year.
Goebus is good with the puck, feeds it ahead to Gallagher.
Now the Newhook crosses the line.
Drop past Thompson.
Top of the left circle.
Drop it back.
Slapshot coming safe.
We've outscore.
Newhook got the rebound in the corner.
And he angled it from the goal line and the left wing off.
Perhaps a mookamagolin off of Ascroft and in.
That is a power play goal for Alex Newhook.
His second goal of the third period.
That ties the game five-five.
As a defenseman you try to get in the way of the puck and mookamagolin with that long reach did so.
And you're going to try and deflect that puck on that weird angle.
But unfortunately it went in the wrong direction and then off Ascroft.
And again, Newhook with his second goal of the game.
Eighth of the season.
From Gallagher and Matheson tying the game five-five.
And it looked like the Canadians were going to perform another miracle.
Yeah, it almost looked like this one was destined for overtime.
And you know, in that play by Sherwood just a, you know, a great offensive minded play.
Just throw the puck back towards that.
And he knew the goal tender was challenging that first shot.
And it ended up lucky bounce call what you want but scored the goal.
And that was the game winning play coming up here with key for Sherwood getting his first goal as a shark on a really weird penalty.
We didn't really see it but in a big scrum to the left side of the Canadians goal.
All of a sudden Montreal bench gets a two-man amen on the ice penalty at 1503.
And at 1634 it would be Sherwood getting his first goal in a San Jose uniform.
And it proved to be the game winner.
Acklin has a play out to the point.
Oh, he gives it over to Sherwood in front of the deflection.
Sherwood shoots Scar!
Key for Sherwood gets his first goal as a shark on a broken play in front of the Canadian stack.
It's a power play goal and the sharks are up six-five.
A couple of weird pinballs off of that one but Phillip Kurishev and William Ecklin got a siss on.
Key for Sherwood's 18th of the year.
He drives the net.
He puts himself in a position.
He causes trouble and then he's got good skills.
Yeah, no.
And again, you see the effort on the first one on the great pass there.
And then there he just finds himself in a good spot and Kurishev with a great pass back to her.
Okay, so that's Sherwood's goal to make it a six-five shark's win.
Adam Godet also picked up an empty net goal late.
But Maclin, Cedabrini, who had already had three points, had the entire empty net to shoot at.
But he decided to look off to his right and saw a teammate and gave him the puck instead.
Download a coffeeel.
Coffeeel back to Suzuki.
Stick candles to the middle.
Shot wide.
Inboard caram.
Grab.
Not paired out.
But now Cedabrini wins the puck.
He's got a two-on-one empty net.
Cedabrini, over to Godet.
Score.
How about Maclin, Cedabrini?
Had the empty net on the two-on-one break?
And he slid it over to Adam Godet with three point six seconds left.
Sharks seven Canadians five.
That's how the game would end.
Maclin, Cedabrini, with one goal and three assists in this game.
A four point evening.
San Jose Sharks have had seven occasions in which a player has picked up four points in a single game.
And Maclin, Cedabrini, has been involved in some of those.
He had a golden three assists in Vancouver on January 27th in his most recent four point game.
This is his fifth career, four plus point game.
And his fourth make that his fifth, his fifth three assists game or better.
So that was the story.
But it wasn't all of the story.
Because at one point the Canadians were really pushing hard here to try to take the lead.
Before the sure would go.
Before the Godet go.
Yaroslav Askerov had to come up big on a short-handed scoring chance.
And that was by Anderson.
And here comes Cedabrini racing back to the neutral zone across the blue line.
He tries to make the play himself.
Couldn't do it. Canadians clear all the way down.
This could be a short-handed chance for Anderson off the endboard.
He walks in front.
What a save by Askerov doing the splits.
Another stop by Askerov off the endboard.
Karim and the shark scrambling here to get the control back on the power play.
That was right before that sure would score the game winning goal on the power play.
And Askerov made the saves he had to to get the win.
Yeah, he made some incredible saves throughout the game.
And no one bigger there than there at the end.
Game winning goal for Kiefer Sherwood.
His first goal ever was a member of the San Jose Sharks.
But Sherwood also picking up his seventh power play goal over all this season.
He only had one in his career entering the year.
He was always kind of a third or fourth-line guy.
But he has certainly found his way.
And now that he's back to health for the sharks, he's starting to provide a lot of value.
But somebody else has provided value ever since he became a shark when he was drafted in the first round.
That would be Will Smith of the San Jose Sharks.
Who right now, after a brilliant, brilliant evening, is with Scott Han.
Hey, well, that's got to feel good.
Obviously a wild game.
A little bit of everything we were talking about here.
We had the physical play, the goals.
How much fun was that game to play in?
Yeah, it was tons of fun.
I mean, you said it right there.
Physicality.
A lot of goals as you can see.
And yeah, big one for us.
Yeah, obviously not always a fun one for the goal tenders to play in.
But take us through a little bit of what you saw and ask her off.
He had those two big saves in the second period.
The back-to-back on Caulfield and Captain in there on the two on one.
Yeah, he's been unbelievable, I think.
He's keeping us in a lot of games.
And I think you see what those saves are super timely.
And we definitely needed him.
You know, and keep for sure, we're always see scoring his first goal, you know, since coming in.
You know, take us through a type of player he is and what it's like in the locker room.
Yeah, he's been awesome.
Big for a team with a lot of energy and a big goal for him.
Sounds like you're the guy.
Yeah, it sounds like you have some fun down there.
You know, take us through that fifth goal on the power play there.
You saw you stick point now to the top there and you pulled almost like the Zach Hyman back door.
You know, on the Edmonton, you're taking some hints from the Edmonton power play there.
I mean, they're pretty good.
I think they're the best of league.
So, yeah, it was a good play there by Matt.
I walked out into the back door and we've been practicing that one.
So it was good.
Well, that was a great play.
It was almost like you were pointing back toward the point and then you filled the hole and got the play.
But also, what about what about the play that you made to get Maclin the puck,
or at least you and Colin graphed together in the neutral zone when he raced into scores 30th goal.
I mean, you could have really faded under pressure and lost control of the play,
but the shark's health controlled the puck after that.
Yeah, we work on like that slash support a lot.
I think it was Mac that kind of chipped it out and then I got an under control graph
from you and I just played a Mac and he kind of did the rest there.
You know what it's like to come into the NHL as a really young player
and have to learn your way at the NHL level.
How about Michael Misa in the last few games that he's played?
Yeah, he's been great.
I think everyone's the, you know, what type of player he is and why he got picked so high.
So we love having around and he's been awesome for us.
I knew you and Kent Hughes, the GM of the Montreal Canadians, go way, way back from your days in Boston.
It's got to feel pretty good to come out of this one.
Yeah, it does.
He was my coach for a bit and I know him really well.
I'm in his family, so it was good to get a win over some.
Well, well, here you are in this home stand with three consecutive wins.
You've got two more to go.
You've got to keep on pushing forward to get back into the playoff range.
Just take a look at the rest of this home stand and outline it for us.
Yeah, it's huge.
We love playing at home and there are two big ones back to back.
And then we go on an East Coast trip.
So we know we want to get those two done and then focus on the rest from there.
We'll go enjoy it with the rest of your teammates.
Congratulations on a great performance and a nice win.
Thank you.
Have a good one.
That's Will Smith at the San Jose Sharks, who had a goal and an assist.
And final score, Shark 7, Canadians 5 at SAP Center in front of the set-out crowd.
The San Jose Sharks record now ups to 30, 25 and 4.
They have 64 points.
While Montreal drops this one in regulation.
The Canadians fall back to 33, 18 and 9.
They have 75 points on the year.
This is a big, big home stand for the Sharks.
Three straight wins.
They take another step forward and certainly look forward to the final two games of this home stand.
Trade deadline day on Friday.
St. Louis will be in town.
And then Saturday, a back-to-back finishes up the home stand against the New York Islanders.
Once again, the final score.
The Shark 7, the Canadians 5.
That's it for our Sharks instant replay.
This has been a presentation of the San Jose Sharks Audio Network.
