This episode from the life of Sherlock Holmes will be transmitted to our men and women overseas by shortwave and through the worldwide facilities of the Armed Forces Radio Service. Petri Wine brings you... ...Basel Rathbone and Nigel Bruce and the new Adventures of Sherlock Holmes. The Petri family, the family that took time to bring you good wine, invite you to listen to Dr. Watson tell us another exciting adventure he shared with his old friend, that master detective Sherlock Holmes. And I sure wish you could listen to this story with glass of Petri California port right at your elbow. Petri port. That's the wine that's perfect after dinner when you're just taking things easy. And say if you've never tried Petri port, if you've never tasted that wonderful rich red wine, well this is the week to do it. I'll tell you why. This is National Wine Week, sort of a celebration we're having to mark the return to good living.

Your wine merchant is kind of rolling out the red plush pocket this week and among other things he wants to prove to you that you just couldn't ask for a more delicious wine than Petri Wine. Why don't you take him up on it? And begin by becoming a quaint with Petri port. You'll really love it and so will your guests. And say you can serve Petri port proudly because after all the name Petri is the proudest name in the history of American wines. That's a fact. Well, here's the patio of Dr. Watson's Northern California bungalow, but where's the doctor? Here I am, Mr. Bartel. I'm your doctor. Okay, I'll be right there. Oh, sitting by the fish plant, Dr.? Yes, my boy. It's not a present, Dr. here for change. Did you ever cut your ass stupid the expression of a goldfish in Mr. Bartel? Well, I can't say I've ever given my thought, Dr. White.

You see this foolish little fella here with his silly little mouth opening and closing as though he was constantly astonished? Oh, what is this? I thought you were a fish lover. Yes, I am, but just as I was brooding over tonight's story, that goldfish seemed to be making faces at me as though it was trying to remind me of how my face must have looked. On a certain June evening, 1,890. He says to me is if you're going to tell a story against yourself, Dr. I am, young fella, my lad. What happened? One Sunday morning in 1890, I dropped round a visit my friend in Baker Street. Mrs. Hudson told me that he was out, but suggested that I wait in our old rooms for his return and promised me a part of strong tea with some buttered scottens as an inducement. Then I walked into the sitting room, I was astonished to see homes standing there, a bag in one hand, and a coat from the other. I'm fine, Holmes. I'm surprised to see you though, Mrs. Hudson told me that you were out. I have been Watson on a case. I just returned by my private entrance for some necessary effort.

Oh, good. Good I come with you. My wife's a fairer. But my practice is quite flack at the moment. Not even my plus to your old friend Watson can accompany me on this case. It's a thick-ish business. Two Nations hangs in the balance. I just work alone. Son, I'd like to leave you like this, old fella. Goodbye. Oh, Mrs. Hudson's making me some tea. Some battered scottens come and you wait and share them with me. Ah, ah. Good old Watson. The one fixed point in a changing age. Empires are toppling a new sort of tea and buttered scottens. Oh, sorry Mr. Ihola, goodbye. Oh, that looks a sad old fella. The time is right, but I'll tell you all about the case and you can write it up in your memoirs. Goodbye, old boy. But it's gone. I haven't got any appetite for him. Did you enjoy the scones, Dr. Hudson? I'm afraid my appetite disappeared when Mr. Holmes left. But did it? I see you've eaten the more just the city.

What? Oh, I see it. I've got a surprise for you, Doctor. Inspector Lestrade has done stairs. You tend to see Mr. Holmes, but when I told him he was out, Inspector said he'd like to see you. We did, then. I'll ask him to come up, please. Will you, Mr. Hudson? I said, will you come up, please, Inspector? I think you, Mr. Hudson. Can I bust you up a few more scones? No, no, no, no, thank you. I really couldn't eat. I've just gone make some more to say. You'll eat them if I text them. No, no, really. Oh, there you are, Mr. Holmes. Hello, Doctor Watson. Years are pretty kettle-a-pissed and no mistake. What's the trouble? Well, I want Mr. Holmes up on a most important case. Where's he gone? Well, he's out on a very secret matter. You know where he is, Doctor? Well, that's where I know where he is, Mr. Holmes. My old friend never keeps me in the dark. But I'm not a bit of a deal, you know. That's... I could help you a bit.

After all, I'm not exactly unfamiliar with... with my friend's methods. It's true, but just the same. Oh, well, Doctor, two weeks are always better than one. Even if one is a sheepset, it is my old mother used to say. Are you suggesting the time she's here? I'm not suggesting anything, Doctor. I'm just telling you what my old mother used to say. I'm really not very interested in what your old mother used to say. And... And have a start, your problem, please. Where it's simple enough, Doctor? A German diplomat, Graff Otto von Eldenstein, is his name. He's in England on a very secret mission. Graff Otto von Handelstein. Hmm. Yes, I've heard of him, very continual. Well, this von Eldenstein, staying at the manor, Alcidant and Wick, not far out of London. And this morning, somebody sit past his guards and threw a bomb into his study. His secretary was killed, and he would have been too. If it hadn't been that he'd left the room a few minutes early. Well, these second-hand investigations are a little useless, Todd.

We both go down to the manor house at Hampton Wick and examine the situation on the spot. All right. Get out the timetable and look up the next train. And while you're doing that, I'll go to Mrs. Hudson, where I'm going. All right, all right, you're on time, Doctor. You look at Scott. Did I just bring him up to you? Well, who can think of Skunds when an empire is tottering? You sure you're feeling quite real, Doctor. Of course I am. Now, listen to me, Mrs. Hudson. If Mr. Holmes had returned, it's the limit I've gone to Hampton Wick and has speculated to investigate the von Heldenstein business. The von Heldenstein business. I do. Could I tell him that? Well, Mr. Holmes didn't tell you where he was going, did he? No, Doctor, he didn't. Oh, I see, all right. Well, thank you, Mrs. Hudson. Are you sure you got what the Skunds are? Well, I must take him alive

and tell the star could eat him. I do, the one, Doctor. Here's how his purse is rather exciting. Just the same, I wish I knew what Holmes was doing at this moment. You are here, Sherlock Holmes. Yes, I presume, Doctor von Heldenstein is expecting me. Yes, Holmes. He was so anxious that you would come here to the manor house. I left him here to meet you after I got his summons. He's very weak. He has lost much blood from the injuries he received this morning. In fact, no one knows about it. Nine-year-olds. Only I, his all-in-faithful servant, knows. Follow me, please. I will take you to him.

Franz? Franz, is that you? Franz? Yes, Herr Graff. And with me is Herr Sherlock Holmes. Thank you, Herr Holmes. I hope I can be of service to you, sir. You can. You can be of great service. Sit close to my bedrooms. I have not much strength to speak. I'm listening, Herr Graff. You. You must impersonate me. Yes, I gathered when I received your message. I am in England, and I'm most delicate and important mission for the German government. These in a few weeks, your government and mine will conclude its treaty outlining the German and British seers of inter-list in Africa. I see. I see. I see that bomb is thrown this morning by someone who does not wish the treaty to be concluded. Yes, exactly, Herr Holmes. That is why you must impersonate me. In 24 hours' time, I shall be well enough to resume my work. In the meantime, while you can keep the seat of my injuries and also have the opportunity of finding the assassin.

I'm not prepared to take impersonations there, but how can I possibly hope to deceive the members of your personal staff? With the exception of France here, I'm poor Freilin Ulmair, who was killed in the explosion that input me. My staff is new. They have joined me here from the German consulate in London. They will believe that you are me. Very well, sir. I'll try. I have heard of your skill in the art of disguises. And also, it seems to me that we are not so unlike each other. I was about to comment on that, that myself, sir. Yes, and I think that the stars inside the disco will work wonders if I can make the accent reasonably convincing. I will coach you, my friend. This meant it helped me off with my coat. Will you find me to be Towson Ameri? Yes, I will. And while I'm applying my makeup, Herr Graf. Perhaps you will be so good as to hit me with the complete circumstances regarding this morning's attempt on your life. If I'm to impersonate you successfully, I must have all the facts of my fingertips.

Wunderbar, it is amazing, your homes. Even I can hardly tell you for my must. I think it's the wig that puts the finishing touch into my disguise. How did you, Herr Graf? Colors shall. I feel as if I were looking into a mirror. At my accent, you have a find it reasonably convincing. Oh, yeah, yeah. Extremely so. Try it once again, Herr Holmes. Yes, Herr Graf. It gives me the greatest pleasure to do what you ask of me. Praise thee, splendid, Herr Holmes. Hey, the cab is drawn up at the gate. Two men are getting out. You can see them from the window here. Oh, please possibly, Herr. It's possible. It's possible. It's possible. Friends of yours, Herr Holmes. One of them is my first colleague and the other is a detective inspector from scuff and yard. You must keep up the deception. Even this, your friends. As a matter of fact, my friends and investigations will prove an excellent must for my own search for the assassin.

But, uh, well, this is a delicious situation. I hope they won't recognize me. Hey, I'm Graf. I've told von Hildenstein, gentlemen, you wish to see me. Er, who knows, uh, my name is Watson. Dr. Watson, and this is Inspector Luskartus. Got in the eye. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Heard it is, Inspector. A Dr. Watson. May I ask if I have the greatest distinction of addressing the Dr. Watson, friend of Sherlock Holmes. I'm a flattered that you know, Herr Graf. But who does not know the great Dr. Watson? In my country, many people think that you are the real brains of the combination. Tell me, Herr Doctor, is that true? Whoa, I wouldn't actually say that. I've brought you up all country. You have to investigate what occurred this morning. Yes, we have, sir. Uh, the certainty, uh, please sit down. Uh, if you can find any furniture that is unbroken. Oh, thank you, sir. I must say the place is in the mess, and I have got the...

Please tell us exactly what happened. Yeah. I will tell you everything, Herr Doctor. This morning, I was working in here with my secretary, who had four-line ulmar. I had occasion to go upstairs to my home to get some necessary papers. As I came down to stay here, I came into return here. I heard a scream from four-line ulmar. A moment later, there was the most white flicks put in the concussion stunt me. When I came to my poor secretary, was dead. What people were inside the house of the time and the explosion? The time they were all at the church. The only people here was my secretary who was killed. My seven friends. I can vouch for him because he was upstairs when I even put my documents. There were three other people in the house, however. Madame Lisa Barona, my hostess, the owner of this house. A young Englishman from the home office, his name is Hilary Adams. The third person in the house was in the member of the German Embassy, Colonel Schweiger. Oh, then it's just a matter of cross-bresting the three of them as to their elevators. At the time of the explosion, I'll take them one at a time, let's start. Ring for that servant fellow.

What was his name? A prince. A prince. At least he's a rare privilege to watch a master defective at work. Yes, Herr Graffa. I shouldn't be surprised if my methods teach you quite a bit about the art of detection. Here, Dr. Watson, DC's Colonel Schweiger, Dr. Johnathan Embassy. What were you, Colonel Schweiger, when the explosion occurred this morning? I was discussing the military tactics of Klauswitz with one of the guards made a front gate. What was the name of the guard's carter? Mr. Archer Carter. I'll check on that. Thank you, Colonel Schweiger. Please ask Madam Lissa Verona to come in with... Question. Question, nothing but question. Ring for your lord. Well, sorry, Madam, all I want to know is where were you in the explosion of gas this morning? May I have a good word, Lissink, that ship debris of the young Englishman, Hillary Adams?

Herr Graffa, when I offered you my house, I do not know that I would have to put up with a love-making of your staff. Everybody, forever! No, no, no, no, please don't get so excited, Madam Lissa Verona. Question. Question. Stupid young English puppet is making carp-eyed, isn't it? Not beautiful house, blue zoo-key, no use! Mr. Adams, where were you when the explosion occurred? Madam Lissa, sweet. You swear to that? Of course I do. You may ask. I've already done so, sir. Thank you, Mr. Adams. Thank you, that's all you... You...you...you...you...you...you... Well, the start, did you check on the carcass, Lissink? Yes, Doctor. You were saying the truth. You was talking to the Colonel when the explosion happened. Do you have me, Doctor? Your examination has not been very successful, has it, sir? Everyone has an alley by his. But the other buyers of Madam Verona and the young Englishman who are Adams depend on each other's words.

They might be lying. And you've been dealing with criminals as long as I have here, enough you've learned to look far deeper than the obvious. Yes, the start and I shall return to London now and make some inquiries. You will hear from me, sir, before the day is over. Ah, yes. Well, how much obliged you, Doctor, for a very nice meal. Although we've been talking in circles. Not entirely. Anyway, I have come to one important decision. And what's that, Doctor? Madam Verona, is it addicted to the use of drugs? There's two pools of our eyes, we're contracted to ten points. It's an invariable indication of addiction. The start, you've got to start on your own. The start, you've got to start on your own and see what you can find out about her. And I'll go back to my house. You can meet me there later.

I wish the mayor wasn't away. It's a cookside up, I'm sorry. I can't see a thing. I was like a match. That's better. Hello? Who's that murdering room? Who is it? Watson! I thought you'd ever come. Holmes, we're not a few spring prom. Never mind that, O chap. I've come to warn you. Keep out of the Von Hildens, dying business if you tell you your life. You know that I was working on the keratin. No, but I'm for you. Keep out of it. All right, injure us forces at work. Force us to put snuff out your life without a thought. Please believe me, O chap. And do it like quick, Watson! I know that I knew you! You'll hear the rest of Dr Watson's story in just a few seconds. All the time I need to remind you that what with this being national wine week? If you want to take a gift to a young lady, why not take her a bottle of Petri, California musketele?

Petri musketele is the kind of wine you'd serve a queen. That Petri musketele has the flavor of plump, sun-ripen muskag grapes and is it ever good? You couldn't ask for a more delicious after dinner wine. Or a more delicious wine to serve when company comes. Remember, it's musketele. But the important thing is, it's Petri. Petri musketele. And now back to Dr Watson and tonight's adventure, the Manorhouse case. That was a fine place to break off your story, Dr. I must say. But I thought I'd keep you in as much suspense as possible. Well, what happened next? Were you injured when that bomb exploded? No, no, my boy. The concussion of the explosion knocked me out for a few minutes. When I came to, homes had disappeared. And I can imagine where he'd gone. Going, Dr. Soon after that, the star arrived on the scene, and after quick and fruitful examination of the premises, we decided to return once more to the Manorhouse.

And so, an hour later, I was telling my story to the man I still thought to be the graph author of Unheldin's story. This is quite a full-haired doctor. The bomb might easily have killed you. Oh, I really thought so. Quick thinking in the presence of mine, am I stuck in trouble? When I heard the cost of crash, I found myself under the dining table. I must distressed that you yourself should be exposed to some danger. Another tall graph author's a matter of fact, I expressed myself deliberately to the fact. No, Army cook, you know, what we call drawing the enemies far. Come now, Doctor. You don't mean to tell us that you expected that that bomb chucked through the window, I tell you. No, sir, I did a star. The assassin knew that I was working on the case. He followed me to London and fell into the trap. Just as I intended him to, by you, showing his hand. Well, I don't see what he's got you, Doctor. I myself must admit, I cannot see that you are any nearer to finding the murder on the country, sir. The case is really solved. Well, don't see up here. I figure that one out, Doctor. Elementary, my dear, the star, elementary.

One of the three people under suspicion followed me to my house tonight. The second bomb was thrown at a proximity of the cop. Now, it's only a question of finding which one of the three cannot account for his movements at that time. Then we shall know the murderer. You want a crush examined the magenta? Yes, the star, bring him in, please. One of the time. Where were you at tonight? Discussing the military tactics of Clousers with Mr. Carter, the home office guard. So, it's Scott, are you doing it? The limicart is warning, too. We'll check many days of discussion for two students to appreciate all the subtleties, of course, it's. I'll check on that again, Doctor. No, thank you, sir. Then, please ask Madame Verona to come in, will you? Question, question, and still more questions. They have all had seven tonight, you ask? I was looking to more of babbling from a stupid young Englishman.

I'll keep on your health. Mr. Adams, where were you at tonight? With Madame Verona and Herboudwa. There is a curious scene about the pattern of, if in this house, is there not here, Doctor? If I checked on Colonel Schweiger's statement, he was, too. He was, too, in the corridor at seven o'clock, all right. Have worked with the other two account for themselves, Doctor. Oh, once again, they all abide for each other, but this time, I begin to doubt them. Oh, wait, why'd you say that, Doctor? Well, I would accept Madame Verona's alibi of the young Adams. Obviously, she loves a boy and wouldn't put you to serve for him. On the other hand, he worships her, and I certainly wouldn't have any scooples about lying to provide the alibi for her. Yeah, got a point there, Doctor. Yes, I'd have got her with great suspicion. Yeah, come in. Yes, Miss Adam. Doctor, what's tonight been worrying about Madame Verona?

I was afraid you wouldn't believe my alibi for her. Indeed. I have another, and an unbiased witness who can testify that Madame Verona was in this house at seven tonight. Can you influence? Yes, all right, dear. France, did you spatter Madame Verona at seven tonight? Yeah, I take up two glasses of Sherry to her. It was a few minutes before seven. Thank you, Sir. Thank you, Miss Adam. I appreciate your concern. You may go. Here. It seems to me we're still traveling in circles, Doctor. I'm the comcom, my dear, the star of the case, the song. Indeed. You're astonished me, Doctor. Who is the guilty party? We will know in a minute, Sir. Let's go. Bring the three suspects in here, please. I do. When they are assembled, I will give you the solution to the mistram. Ladies and gentlemen, the mystery is so, I apologize for the little convenience and convenience that you have gone.

You, Madame Verona, you Colonel Swagler and you, Mr. Adams, have all unshakable allies. Therefore, the solution is obvious. As my dear friend, Sherlock Holmes, is often said, eliminate the impossible, and whatever remains, no matter how improbable, is the truth. Therefore, the only person that could have thrown both bombs is you or Sir, yourself, graph up to von Hiltonstein. Oh, no. Oh, sure, sir. I believe you're right, Doctor. What have you got to say to yourself, Doctor? That A2-Hair Doctor have unshakable allies. Oh, what is it? Aibos, it's you, Hair Doctor, in the second bomb was formed. I don't know if you're talking about, I was alert. So, come on, Othello, that's not true. What? How could you? Mr. Holmes, don't be angry with me, Othello. Oh, you're completely normal. I'm not a man, you're not a man, you're not a man. I thought you got the real solution to take as usual, Mr. Hair. Yes, Mr. Othello, I have. Well, it's here, Doctor. My just wills, show me up. Oh, my God, what's the deal? What's the deal? You're not operating yourself.

You really handled the case very well. You made only one mistake. Huh? May I advise that victim of mine, which you just quoted, eliminate the possible, and then, if nothing remains, some part of the impossible must be possible. Oh, it's possible. Colonel Schneiker's alibi was valid. So, it was not a Verona's, since it was corroborated by the trusted France. But what does your alibi rest on Mr. Adams? Edmund Röler's total, I was just seven? Yes, but not a Verona is addicted to the use of drugs. I'm sure that you spotted that, that what? Yeah, that's my idea. Your mistake, Othello, was in not drawing the correct conclusion. Mr. Adams, alibi, depends on the unsupported word of a drug addict. Now, use of drugs notoriously destroys, first of all, the sense of time. In it, fix, such as the resetting of clocks could be worked on, without them noticing her word on a time alibi is completely valiant. And, as you evaluate, Adams is the man who's metters. I don't know. He's a murderer. I'm not traitor.

Well, now that we're back in Baker Street, Boston, I may as well tell you, that I had suspicions of Adams from the first. You do? Well... My brother, Mike, ought to tell me that he was suspected of being a traitor at heart. He's been under observation for some years. He was purposely given this assignment as a definite test of his integrity. Well, I understand it all now. I'm just the same. I did make an estimate myself in front of a start, too. Oh, don't worry about it, Othello. Chad, please don't worry. You always look and correct that impression, you know? Yours will be the last word. Oh, how do you mean? You'll come to write this story in your memoirs, my dear fellow. You can always do a little bit of what you say, re-editing of your own parts? Pots, charity, never need no. Doctor, that was really a swell stuff. And you liked it, sort of... ...means me out of a bit of a fool, huh? Oh, nothing of the kind, Doctor. I agree with Holmes, you did a splendid job.

I was losing it. After all, you did like for suspects, boring, didn't you? Well, well, come to think of it, yes, of course I did. And you did make the point that Madam Barone was a drug addict. Yes, yes, I do. So I did. And you did say that Mr. Adam Zalabai could be a lie. I do, you're right. I didn't solve that case for Holmes Afthro. It's about two. Did anyone ever tell you that you're really a very smart young man? I would do an eye-catching case together. We can't. Starting tonight. Oh, really? Sure. In celebration of Nashville Wine Week, I brought you a case of Petri Wine. And I said, yes, we start on it right now with a glass of wine. What a wine. Petri Wine. We know that's really good because the Petri family has been making fine wines in the 1800s. For generations. Ever since they started the Petri business, the Petri family has been turning luscious California grapes into fragrant, delicious wine. And during all that time, they've been hanging on down from father to son, from father to son, all their skill and knowledge and experience.

The Petri Wine you buy today is the result of all that skill and knowledge and experience. That's why you can't go wrong when you choose a Petri Wine because Petri took time to bring you good wine. And now, Dr. Watson, what's the prescription for next week's story? I don't know. I'm Mr. Neckstreet. Mr. Bartel, I think I can promise you a most entertaining adventure. It concerns a famous magician, a female spy of unusual beauty, and a man even more brilliant than Holmes himself. He's old a brother. Micro. Sounds terrific, Dr. And before we say goodnight to our friends, I want to remind them that our men overseas need the merchant marine to bring them back home. The merchant marine got them there and it'll bring them back if you help. Right now, the merchant marine needs experienced mates, engineers, A.Bs, firemen, oil or water tenders, and chief cooks. If you qualify, right or wire collected once, to merchant marine, Washington 25, D.C.

Bring the boys home. The next Sherlock Holmes adventure is written by Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher, who was suggested by an incident in the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story, the Greek interpreter. Mr. Ratbone appears through the courtesy of Metro-Golden Mayor and Mr. Bruce through the courtesy of Universal Pictures, where they are now starring in Sherlock Holmes series. The Petri wine company of San Francisco, California, invites you to tune in again next week, same time, same station. This is Steve Bartel saying goodnight for the Petri family. Sherlock Holmes comes to you from our Hollywood studio. This is the mutual broadcasting system.
