Pet Frey wine brings you...
Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce in the new adventures of Sherlock Holmes.
The Pet Frey family, the family that took time to bring you good wine, invite you to listen to Dr. Watson tell us about another exciting adventure he shared with his old friend that mastered detective Sherlock Holmes.
It began on a summer evening in 1906. I'd been for a long walk in the park, I remember when I returned to Baker Street and entered our rooms.
Holmes looked up at me with a twinkle and a...
...and spoke.
You look positive.
You're going with help Watson.
Well, I haven't spurned work, I never learned. He's gonna come with me.
The park was looking particularly beautiful.
Well, Chef, do you want to go absent-time to start with a right-in-other monograph?
Oh, well, what's the subject this time?
Occupational liability to murder. For instance, the mortality rate is naturally high among policemen and detectives.
Physicians are murdered with a fair regularity, but the murder of a dentist is rare.
And who ever heard of a murdered victim rich figure?
Well, it's quite true, but what's the occasion for this little homilayer?
I've been browsing over my new spiritual things.
Yeah.
You would have called up a hearing of a murder to back in this one.
No, no, I can't.
So then I do know why.
And yet my tripping is informant that no less than three to back in this have been murdered in the past six months and all the murders have occurred in the same small shop of the Eastern London.
Now why do you suppose three to back in this would be murdered?
Would be murdered in the same shop?
Come out, hello.
Give me a logical solution to the problem, will you?
Well, let me see.
You say that the shop's in the east end?
Yes.
Is it near the river?
As it happens, it's on the water's edge.
And supposing that it's back in this shop was the headquarters of a smuggling ring.
That's boxes of cigars were unloaded from the duct and brought to the shop cigars containing pearls or opulums.
But some, my dear, you're doing splendidly.
I'm just walking the path more frequently, you're a positive, isn't it, lady?
Oh, no, no, you're making fun of me.
I'm actually not.
You're affecting anyone, huh?
No, no, probably if there's a death, this is Hudson.
The one with a fascinating theory.
Now, why are three to back in this murder?
Well, because they know too much.
That says it's not a share of the profits.
So the head of the ring decides to kill the plausible.
That's what I'm saying.
I feel you must congratulate you.
Thank you very much.
I'm very lucky in having a biographer, but it's such a lively imagination.
Thank you very much.
I mean, imagination.
Oh, hello, the stud.
Start, I'll get to you.
I hope I'm not intruding.
Now the tall, my dear fellow.
Come along, sit down.
Thank you, Miss Holmes.
Anything remarkable on hand?
Oh, no, miss Holmes.
I think very particular.
Then tell me all about it, the stud.
Can't I say anything for you?
Yes, there is something on my mind and no mistake.
Had it concerns the three murder to back in this, I see.
He's splendid.
Now, that blazing did you know that?
Yes, because Holmes had the pure magic.
I'll talk about it, but it's a simple deduction.
Observe the fighting guys getting out of the restaurant's wrist pocket?
They out of a fast, superior quality to his youth, more brand.
Obviously, the scene of his latest investigation is profit-setting.
Well, should we say professional perquisites?
Of course you are.
Dear one, Miss Holmes.
Thank you, Ross, for my fight.
Well, how about you, Dr. Holmes?
Well, thank you, the stud.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Corona's and nine's victim.
Tell me about the murder to back in it.
Well, how much do you know about the case?
That's what I've written the papers.
It's curious enough.
We were discussing the affair as you walked in the stud.
It's a strange business, didn't we?
I only put over the old story today when I had a long talk to young Jack Longway.
He's the owner of the show.
When in relation to what Gerald Longway, the 12th member of Parliament,
who, that was so successfully against the slum clearance bill,
his son, Mr. Holmes, was not young for the two.
When his father died, he inherited this shop,
along with a lot of other property in the East End.
Well, how big a shop is it, Mr. Holmes?
Warged, sold in the war, Dr. Mike, all the other shops in that part of London.
Young Mr. Longway, just as we first went sit to a man by the name of George Gritz.
He lives there with his daughter, Lily, and made quite a nice go out of the shop.
Six months ago, when Jack Longway was abroad, George Gritz has a stroke and nearly kicks the kick.
He, he, he, he, he, he nearly dies, Doctor.
Oh, he kicks the bike.
I never happened to straddle.
Well, while he's in the hospital, his daughter gives up the lease on the shop.
A few days later, an Italian takes his over and a couple of weeks later,
he's found with his footcaps.
Did you investigate that first murder yourself?
No, Mr. Holmes.
It seemed like any of our dozen fittings we get in that part of Londoner.
I'll keep a cut up, he's till empty.
No clue.
Who's the next tenant?
A Scotchman.
Looked for the name of Meckintosh.
A few weeks later, he moved in.
The same thing happened to him.
That time, I did go down there.
But I couldn't find out nothing.
Was Robert again your parent murdered?
Yes, sir.
That they didn't want the same.
You were strangled with a silk scarf.
Soap scarf, eh?
And who was the third tenant?
The man who was murdered yesterday.
I can't do, fella.
A man by the name of Mukherjee.
He takes it over a week last Friday.
And yesterday, we find him nice through the back and his money gone.
Cook's harvest down there before you could say crystal palace.
But once again, I didn't find out nothing.
No knife, no fingerprints of till, no footprints.
Just a very dead-in dude.
Was Young was the lung with the landlord in England when these murders occurred?
If that's the kind of thing about it, Mr. Rose,
he'd up till very yesterday morning.
He didn't know nothing about what had been going on.
I imagine he'd have difficulty in renting the shop after three months.
Well, that's just it, doctor.
That's why he comes to me at the yard.
George Green it is first tenant of the shop.
Move back there today with his daughter, Lily.
Young is the lung.
What's worried about them?
Well, if you ask me, he's more worried about that daughter than he is a bad old man.
Brilliant.
So the original tenants of the shop are back in residence again, right?
And what do you want me to do?
Well, I suppose you'd be interested in after coming along with me and looking at the shop, Mr. Rose.
I should say very glad to my dear fellow.
Let's go.
That was him.
Oh, that's you.
Oh, you're the resident doctor.
Hello?
Mike Grant.
How are you?
Huh?
Yes.
Yes, he's here now.
I've caused.
I'll do everything I can.
Certainly.
I have dinner together soon, shall we?
Spend it, Adya.
All right.
Goodbye.
Is that your brother home?
Yes.
Mr. Adya, I do think you might have told me the whole truth.
What do you mean, sir?
I thought your visit was prompted by a neat, befriended system.
I didn't realize that you came here virtually on a government order.
Well, it wasn't just quite like that, Mr. Rose.
The government got to do with the case.
And how did your brother Microth fit into the picture?
I don't know yet.
But if one thing we make certain, there's obviously a great deal more than this case than the stride, we'd have us believe.
Why do you say that, Holmes?
It was very mind-blowing.
A little bit occasional in Microth is British government.
Nice part of London take a walk in on a fucking night-ended journalist.
All our policemen work down here in pairs, you know.
No, sorry.
Don't blame them.
It's a vile neighborhood.
There's the shop just head office with a sign hanging out.
And no, and no.
There he is again.
Oh.
See that bearded in loose, scouting over around the corner there?
Yeah.
He's been haunting the place ever since I turned down here.
Is my bearded here the one's the place, eh?
Yeah, some years to the home, the Hindu proprietor of the shop was murdered.
Exactly.
Well, here we are.
I'll go in first.
First of all, in place, eh?
I'll be out in a few minutes.
Absolutely.
George Grant's daughter ducks him with the shop.
Sorry to keep you wet.
Oh.
What's your inspector in the store?
Yes, Mr. Smith.
I bought some gentleman to see your father.
This is Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
Please, to meet you, I'm sure.
Are you doing really?
Is your dad home?
No, Inspector Lee won't be until after dinner.
We're down at the docks he did to see a bat since the garshipman.
Mr. Long, I have to hear.
If you want to see him, we've just had him some tea in the back room.
Yes, all right.
Pack these gentleman to meet him.
Yes.
Come out in the shop.
What is it, Lenny?
Oh, Inspector Lestrade.
And this, Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, I'm sure.
How do you do, Mr. Long?
I'm very glad the Inspector was able to persuade you to come down here, Mr. Holmes.
I'm definitely worried about this business, particularly since Lily's father insisted on coming back here.
I'm afraid that in great danger, I can't make Mr. Grillitz see it.
Now, maybe I wonder if I might ask you a few questions.
Of course, Mr. Holmes.
Before your father had his stroke, did he receive any threats,
considering his occupancy at the shop?
No, if he did, he never told me about him.
But it wouldn't surprise me.
I often told him his biggest enemy is himself.
If you know what I mean.
Yes, I think I do, Mr. Grillitz.
When your father is illness, who decided to give up the lease on the shop?
I did.
No money was coming in.
Well, it looked like Dad might be an invalid for life.
Of course, I couldn't run the shop by myself.
Anyhow, I never did like this part of London.
It wasn't the right business for father.
What was his reaction when you told him to give up the lease?
Well, he was also angry with me.
Said, I'd like to do it without asking him.
By the way, yes.
We'll get bearded into again as we walk up just now.
Been hanging around ever since we came back here, Inspector.
Has the accident come into the shop, Mr. Grillitz?
No.
But he keeps walking by and looking in the window.
I'm sure if we both went into the bedroom,
or left the shop for a little while, would he've come right in?
No, I suggest we give him the opportunity you're seeking, Mr. Grillitz.
I wonder if you and Mr. Longworth would mind leaving the shop for a while.
Of course not, Mr. Holmes.
Make your departure rather stintious, shall we say,
so that he can't help noticing it.
Give us half an hour or so, and then come back.
Perhaps you wouldn't mind going with him, Mr. Run.
Mr. Run, is it? She's mine, Craig.
I know, I know, but in a situation like this,
what's known I've worked much better alone.
We may have to go a little further to decide the law
and your presence, Mike and Dallasus.
You never think I was a detective, too.
We'll be back in half an hour.
Well, for all the strides,
you get to hit touchy as the years roll by.
Yeah, I blame him.
I'm leaving him completely in the dark.
Come on, Watson.
Behind the counter.
No, no, no, no, no.
Not under it.
Not under it.
Not under it, old chap.
We lift the flap.
Oh, good.
So.
Am I just weak clutched down behind here?
Come on.
That's it.
Have you got some of all the Watson?
Yes.
Do my pocket good.
In time, make your office comfortable as these
cramped quarters walk the net.
You may have a better way to head up this.
Look.
Look, Holmes.
Let's end you now.
Get in the way.
Hand it.
Yes, yes, sir.
Get it.
Get it.
Get it.
Get it.
Get it.
Get it.
Get it.
Get it.
You all right, Watson?
Put your hands up.
I got you covered with the sofa.
For now, I'm in.
What are you doing here?
Who?
Who are you?
Never mind who I am.
Just answer my question.
I do not speak.
Very good English.
Do you mean to stand up?
Pardoning sector?
Ah, sector high.
You put them in the air.
Look at me.
It's a question.
Tomorrow I home.
Who come here?
Tomorrow bye.
Who?
From Johnny sector.
What's that, sir?
Salon.
I know you don't mind, man.
Just give me your hand.
It's all right, Watson.
There you go.
He's an outside.
What was you telling what punters going on?
Who that man was and why you let him go?
An investigator from the foreign office, old chap.
He had any instructions by my brother and my crop.
My crop?
Yes, old fellow.
And my brother fails to tell me all the facts
concerning this case.
I begin to think these triple murders have far greater
ramifications than we ever dreamed of.
After Watson's story will continue in just a second.
Just about time enough for me to mention that
any field becomes a better meal
when you serve it with pet-free wine.
And say you'll find that pet-free California burgundy
and pet-free California soap turn
are just made to go with food.
That pet-free burgundy is a rich red wine
that's bosom pals with any meat or meat dish.
Boy, what a flavor.
And that pet-free soap turn is the delicate white wine
that's just perfect with chicken or with fish.
Yes, sir.
With food, you just can't feed a good pet-free wine.
And now back to tonight's new Sherlock Holmes adventure.
Publing cases after applying the attention to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson.
Three murders have taken place in a small tobacco shop
in the east end of London.
As we rejoin our story it's late at night.
And Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson accompanied by an spectacular stride.
I once again walk into the ill-fated spot.
Well, I don't see that you've accomplished much, Mr. Evans, except that you just woke me
a nice dinner.
Oh, I'll make you progress, Mr. John.
Very by the elimination of obvious suspects, because a pattern to this case, and it should
give us a clue.
Well, how do you mean, Herman?
And if hello, consider the obvious murder of these murders, and particularly observe the
results they've obtained.
Well, the murder is the same in all three killings, Robert, on the side, under effect of a few
pounds.
From the till, blind you to the real murder.
Look, look, look.
Is Mr. Evans coming out of this shot?
What do you mean, Mr. Evans?
Hello, Mr. Evans.
Is your father home yet?
Yes, he is, Mr. Evans.
I can't tell you how anxious I am for you to talk to him.
I'm going to meet Mr. Long, where?
He's taken me to the music hall.
I should be anxious after ten.
I hope you'll be able to stay with Dad until then.
Well, don't you worry, Mr. Evans.
We'll keep an eye on him.
Oh, thank you ever so much.
Oh, um.
Oh, Mr. Evans.
Yes, Mr. Williams?
Please, don't go into our rooms in a bit, will you?
I've left things in a fright for me.
I quite understand, Mr. Williams.
Where?
To the hall.
See you later.
That's kind of a shock.
Oh, is it?
Oh, it's you, Inspector.
Here, these gentlemen, uh, Mr. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watts.
Ah, it is, sir.
Uh, good evening.
Good evening.
If you meet young Lily just now.
Yes, she, uh, told us she was going out for the music hall with Mr. Longworth.
Yes.
I'm afraid we had quite a set to about that.
A very strong will-girl, Lily, very strong will.
I'd assume that, uh, you disapprove of your daughter's association with Mr. Mungworth.
Ah, of course I do.
With the top, with lots of money.
Lily's so blunt, she can't see that he's up for no good.
I'm pretty sure either.
I might find out what's really at the back of these murders.
And what is your theory, sir?
Well, I'll tell you this in confidence.
Got nothing to back it up, I understand.
There's been talk of widening the docks around here.
Had it make property values go up, you see, of course.
Young Longworth's been trying to buy up all the other shops along the waterfront there,
but they wouldn't sell.
If y'all asked me, he's at these murders done just to frighten people away
so that they, he could buy cheap.
No, I'm not saying that he did the murders himself to understand.
He planned them.
And these parties are easy enough, any night to get a throat cut for a couple of kids.
Yeah.
That's why I'm glad you're here, gents.
You see, I just got another warning.
Good morning.
What do you mean, it's a warning?
On this note, slipped under that door.
They're not three quarters of an hour ago.
You see it, please.
Oh.
What does it tell you, huh?
All right, so Colin, you were eight thirty tonight.
You know what's good for you?
You'll be waiting for me alone.
Finally, funny tricks.
You'll go where I sent the rest of them.
Well, that's obviously in the killer.
Possibly.
What's the time now?
Hmm.
It's, uh, pretty fast, eh?
I, uh, was the open new gentleman would wait in our rooms back at the shop.
You can hear what's going on in here, and if it ties in there up,
stuff it can pop in and happen.
That's what I was about to suggest myself, Mr. Glitties.
Either way, will you?
All right.
Just step beyond the counter, gents.
Through here.
Ah, here we are.
That's exactly what Buckingham Palace is back here.
But you can make yourselves comfortable, aren't you?
Oh, don't you worry about us, Glitties.
Oh, I better turn off the gas.
This bloke spot the light under the door in here might smell a wrap.
There we are.
Yeah.
As soon as I see him coming in the shop, I'll knock twice on the door.
Like this.
And that'll give you the signal that is easier.
Is that right?
Why, Charlie?
Why not keep your ears open, gents?
I may need your help.
Where are you, huh?
I can't see a thing.
How are you here, Watson?
You know, I've got another theory where Jack Longworth might be the back of all this.
You listening, huh?
I can't listen, though, is that all?
I don't know.
Longworth knows it.
Glitties doesn't approve of his having any of the dudes in there.
So when he goes abroad, he leaves instructions to murder the tobacco.
Your sassons don't know about let having a stroke, of course,
and they keep murdering the wrong fella.
Well, that makes a very good sense, Doctor.
What do you say, Mr. Holmes?
Holmes.
Holmes.
But I am.
That's my solution.
He's the spirit I haven't.
I've just explored him.
Shh.
Let's see if I'll...
There goes the front door.
Somebody's coming.
We've got to go in.
We've got to get in there at once.
Open the door.
What's not?
Never mind that.
It's just Holmes and David.
Come on.
Come on, one more.
Good.
Jeffal.
He's been slashed for life.
Glitt.
Glitt.
What the killer's got a way.
I'm sorry.
Well, I was trying to conserve your energy.
Your murder relies there.
But that's really...
Of course it is.
That's just what it's about.
I think you'll find the blood-stained knife.
That's a lot.
Good Lord.
He has a razor in his pocket.
It's covered with blood.
You mean to say that he's slashed himself?
I just took the handcuffs on him.
The straw.
What he's still playing acting.
He may be more difficult to handle when he realizes he gains up.
Take your hands off of me.
Come on, quick.
Come on.
Yeah.
Yeah, no need to stride.
Yeah.
Well, now that I've knocked a wound in men out,
I'll tell you.
Perhaps you'll tell me what's going on.
Yes, I'm completely in the dark too.
Always very simple, really.
Glitt has just staged a fake attack on himself.
Who lives in the bleeding that someone else is the murderer?
Yeah, but that's threatening.
No, T-risk.
Composed by himself for the occasion.
No, but we heard voices.
We heard the shop door open.
We heard Grip talking to himself.
As the shop door.
That's how he gave himself away.
Well, how do you mean, Mr. Owls?
Whenever the shop door opens,
there's a bell that jangles.
We will know this time.
Stop.
That's right.
There is.
There's no bell, jangles.
When we were in the back room.
Glitt's got us in there.
Locked the door on us unobtusably and staged his little drama.
Yes, but we heard the door creak open and chose Mr. Owls.
The creak of this flat in the counter.
Would sound exact to the same, my dear fellow.
I'm not listening.
Yes, but why, Holmes?
How did you spot the grid with a man?
It was obvious in the beginning that since nothing had changed
about the shop except the ownership of the attackers.
We're directed against any of the backenists
who was not really himself.
Of course, his daughter, Lily, obviously knew what was going on.
Well, I don't see how you figure that one out, Mr. Owls.
Every romance that she made said that
she loved her father.
She knew his failings.
In any case, she gave me the final clue.
Oh, what clue was that?
In very point of the asking me enough to go into the back room of the shop
and of course, you meant the reverse of what you said.
I followed her advice when you were explaining our theory to Mr. Owls.
Well, what did you find, Mr. Owls?
Mr. Glitt had obligingly left a secret door open,
a door leading to a passageway that seemed to go down to the waterfront
if it's only for a couple of years.
Yes, but I still don't understand.
Well, that's monkey Holmes.
What do I owe, chap?
No, I suspect that from the interest of the foreign office in the case,
this shop has been the headquarters of an espionage ring.
And afraid the final answer to that question
would have to be given by someone else.
Oh, who home?
By my elder brother and my craft.
You're humiliating, isn't it Watson?
And what was the final answer to the question, Dr. Watson?
Well, Holmes was right as usual with the form of the shop
that had been the headquarters of aspiring, updated by Glitt.
And many international generals had been smuggled in England
following ships more up the river.
And had Mr. Glitt hanged for his crime?
No, no, no, he didn't, my boy.
For he came to trial, he had a stroke, and he died.
Probably just as well for his daughter, say.
Oh, his daughter, he is a lovely girl.
Is she a very long way?
Indeed, she did, as a matter of fact.
Hi, guys, to the wedding.
It was a very wonderful wedding reception.
The three would have been there yourself, Mr. Forman.
In fact, you'd have liked it very much.
Say, it's pretty good wine.
Was it a petri wine by any chance?
Well, it was so good it easy. It might have been.
You mean because petri wine is the kind of a wine you can't forget?
That's exactly what I do mean.
Well, that's because the petri family really knows
all there is to know about the fine art of turning luscious,
sunrife and grapes into fragrant, delicious wine.
You see, the petri family's been making wine
ever since they started the petri business way back in the 1800s.
And they've been able to hand on down in the family
from father to son, from father to son,
every bit of their skill and experience.
That's why petri wine is so good today,
because petri took time to bring you good wine.
And say, don't forget to take a moment yourself
and send for your free recipe calendar.
Remember, send to petri wine, petri wine,
San Francisco 26, San Francisco 26, California.
This offer is intended to apply only in those states
and other localities, where its acceptance is permissible
by law and regulation.
And now, doctor, do you feel like giving us a hint about
next week's story?
Yes, I do.
Next week, Mr. Forman, I'm going to tell you a strange adventure
that happened to Holmes and me in the west end of London.
It concerns the death of a famous actor
who was portraying the part of an equally famous man,
Sherlock Holmes.
Keep your doctor, see you next week.
And say, from the news we've had so far today,
maybe by next week at this time,
we'll hear some really good news from Europe.
I certainly hope so, Mr. Forman.
But let us remember the world to feel
well when Germany quits.
You've still got to lick Japan.
That's going to take a long time.
So instead of celebrating, when the E-Day comes along,
let's just strengthen our resolve,
support the war, more than ever here at home.
Keep that war job.
Don't leave it to your least.
Keep on buying more and more war bonds
and keep them.
Don't turn them in.
Help all you can with all home front activities
and observe all our wartime regulations
such as price ceilings.
That's the real way to celebrate a victory in Europe
by working harder to end the war and the Pacific.
Tonight Sherlock Holmes' adventure is written
by Dennis Green and Anthony Boucher
and is based on an incident
in the Serapic Conan Doyle story,
the adventure of the six Napoleon.
Mr. Rathbone appears
to the courtesy of Metrogover Mayor
and Mr. Bruce to the courtesy of Universal Pictures
where they are now starring in the Sherlock Holmes series.
The Petri wine company of San Francisco, California
invites you to tune in again next week,
same time, same station.
Meanwhile, don't forget to take advantage
of our offer of a free recipe calendar.
Oh, the Petri family took the time
to bring you such good wine.
So when you eat and when you cook,
remember Petri wine.
To make good food tastes better, remember.
Pet.
Pet.
Pet.
Petri.
Petri.
This is Bill Foreman saying good.
It's for the Petri family.
The Sherlock Holmes comes to you from our Hollywood studio.
This is the mutual broadcasting system.
