Hey, hey, where you been?
But got talk is about to begin.
Hey, hey, hey, come on in.
Welcome back to book I talk.
I ordered more cans and that is Stefan christening a couple of weeks ago.
We come paired big 10 schools to fast food restaurants and Stephan and I both
Compared Michigan to waffle house because while the food is immaculate.
There's always something going on at a waffle house that's just a little sketchy.
And it feels like obviously before that there were things but even after that,
There have been things that have happened at Michigan that have validated that choice
Describe them as Waffle House. We also described Ohio State as McDonald's because it is the standard and fast food
It's a mate. It's not almost it's amazing, but it's the standards the first thing you think of when you think of fast food
It's the most dominant brand, but we also know that McDonald's are known for never having their ice cream machines working and
The Ohio State
Strategy for your just broke its ice cream machine again president Ted Carter who has been on the job for about
18 months
I want to say has stepped down because of an inappropriate relationship. That's the details. I have about this step on
I think this is important because it's the president of the Ohio State University
So it's important, but it's also this is the second time in the last two and a half years at a Ohio State president
Has had to step away from the job halfway through their tenure or in the middle of their tenure
You know, Ohio State once again finds itself looking for a new president. I don't like we're not going to get to the academic stuff
For this unless you want to get into the academic stuff for this the question
I think our listeners more care about is does this impact Ohio State football and more importantly overall the Ohio State athletic?
Yeah, definitely. Yeah, we don't we will not pretend to be experts on what this means for the listen
We both have degrees from universities. So I guess we we have participated in education at universities
Like that is that is the extent of our knowledge. We do have bachelor's degrees. Yes, we do have those
Actually, I do have experience with changing presidents because Ken state actually changed presidents while I was in school
So I have seen this before have I seen it twice in a span of 24 months? No, but either you're not there good
Did you know I get another state to my my senior year at Indiana was our presidents last year before he retired
So I just missed a change in presidency. I'm not I'm not qualified on that matter
I suppose but yeah, I mean obviously surprising news to you know wake up to on Monday morning you mentioned 18 months
I think it's been closer to two years January 2024 was I think when when his presidency at Ohio State started?
Yeah, and the the full quote on and you mentioned the inappropriate relationship was inappropriate relationship with someone seeking public resources to support
Her personal business. That was what Ohio State had in their release, right?
I think people you know kind of here here things and kind of come to their own conclusions
That that's the extent of what Ohio State at least said in their release and I'm I guarantee that over the course of the next few days
Weeks months whatever it is we'll probably get details on what exactly that that means but the important part of this and obviously
What we're going to talk about here is like Ted Carter like whoever the president at Ohio State is in this
NIL era and and for the last couple years it was Ted Carter has an immense role
It's not just Ohio State athletics put college athletics right like we compared it to McDonald's because this is the brand
This is the standard. This is what you think of when you think of college athletics
It's Ohio State and Alabama and Texas and
You know, whatever are the brands you think belong in that conversation
Ted Carter is as recently as like a month ago did an interview with with down to Barry and 10 TV and he talked about
You know how he felt like the current NIL model was not sustainable and how you know
Ohio State has been successful and Ohio State's one of like five brands
They can kind of withstand what's going on?
But even then you know, you're being at you're asking Ohio State to do a lot and and what good is this is more my words
And Ted Carter's word but like is Ohio State's brand valuable if there are only five other schools that can exist in this current model
Like is Ohio State valuable if it's in a conference where it's before them and also nobody else is playing college football anymore
You know, it's like that your brand is is also a byproduct of your environment too
So it's it's huge right? It's huge because like Ryan Day talks a lot about you know alignment from the top and like say what you will about Ted Carter
And now his resignation like there was at least from the the sense that we got is
Ted Carter Ross Bjork and Ryan Day were all kind of aligned and and what they wanted to do and and then lost ever was
It always perfect probably not right. I think you probably point to NIL and in the way Ohio State spent and and you know
As it pertained to the football transfer portal and all that like what you know what it what was Ryan Day's vision compared to what this guy's vision was
Compared to this guy's vision. There's there's a million places you can go with this
But overall it seemed like there was alignment between you know
I mean like you can make the case that the three most important people at a university especially a place like Ohio State are
President athletic director and head coach at football. Yeah, right like and and that's not to say like we understand
We'll go for us Bjork says it all the time like what goes on at the medical center and all that like it's is way more important
in terms of like
Like real life like reality not not you know
The lives is more important than we football games. Correct
But also winning football games makes you a crap ton of money and helps
Money likes helps
Right, so it's like these things all go in lockstep and you know having alignment is important and obviously when you lose a peg and in that
You know kind of hierarchy the replacement is it's a huge deal because whoever steps in next like Ted Carter is going to have a massive voice
And whatever the hell college athletics is about to look like for the next however many years to come
Yeah, and that's the thing is when they hired
Ross Bjork it was like okay, you understand football is king right and he would he still says today
Football is king football is king football is king Ted Carter made it a point when he was hired during his
Introduction press conference to talk about how important football was in M. Johnson even though she was only on the job
For about
Three years
She was high. She officially was sworn in September 1st, 2020 and officially stepped down May 7th, 2020
So she was on a job a little longer than 18 months like I was being prestigious and that but I remember
Us being in the Woody in the team room when the announcement that USC and UCLA were joining the big tent
This was obviously the year later as an organ and organs watch it all came organ and watch it
Excuse me. They came part of that mix but when that first happened it was jean Smith as athletic director and
Christina and johnson as president standing side by side at the podium talking about how big of a deal this was
For the big 10 and not just talking about it in the football terms even though that was the most important reason for why it was happening in the first place
And any expansion in college football is happening right now
But how would it impact all the other sports? And so I don't know if you have to be Ted Carter who felt like it was full throttle
Like he's all in on this. He standing up on the stage with jack soy and will Howard
Will open the hold up the trophies. I don't know if you have to be that
But michael drake who was here from 2014 to 2020
There I mean, you maybe mixed reviews on his involvement with sports and how much you cared about that
But there's a middle ground. I think where you have to be vote you have to be active in this space while to your point
Carrying cancers
Yes, winning football games, but you do you have to understand the seat that you're sitting at when you are the president
I know how states in the sports to matter specifically football does matter and I do think regardless of how their 10 years ended here
Both of them the last two presidents and their own ways made it a point to be active
In that space when it was deemed necessary and so whenever they hire a new president
That's going to be an intriguing conversation to have on their views how much they want to be involved probably asking about playoff expansion
Big 10 expansion 36 varsity sports, you know, that's my go that's my go-to question
I was like, hey man, can you still do this and there I was like yeah, yeah, we can still do this
I'm like, all right man. I'll ask you again in 12 months. Let's see where your head is there
But that's that okay, that was 10 minutes. So we're gonna take a break unless you have any other facts
You'd like to share right now because that's you like you know, I'm not I'm not a liar, but you know, this is
I this is this is it's it's interesting to me just in the sense of like what what what voice this president
Next president is going to kind of have yeah in the college football sphere and like we'll we'll talk more about that at the break
But it's I just watching the roundtable at the White House last week was very intriguing to me because it felt like that was something that
Either Ryan Day or Ross Bjork or Ted Carter probably should have had some sort of voice at and maybe they were
What's up? No, they're damn have a voice right like their athletic director was there and and like and maybe they were invited and just decided like
We'll let Tony Patiti kind of speak on our behalf, but like in urban my in urban my area
But if I remember correctly like sankie spoke up
ACC commissioner spoke up. I don't think Tony Patiti spoke up and like that felt odd to me
So I'm like that is another element to this of like
Yeah, it's very clearly taken as it stands of like we'll let the SEC do the do the tweeting and the talking and all this
Sure, we'll just kind of like let the business talk and listen
They won the last three national titles like the business the business is talking right the last two national championship
Games have not included a big 10 or an SEC team
Three they played watching just gonna play TCU, right? No, they played a Washington right right. Yeah, yeah
So last three national championships games have not had an SEC team since like what the big 10 is doing like it's
They're making a lot of money. It's all working
But they have very much taken the kind of high road on you know crap talking and all this and that to the point where it felt
Like extended to the round table or big 10 then necessarily have a huge voice in it
I'm just I'm curious. I'm curious what what the next president will do in that sense because
There does feel like an opportunity for maybe Ohio State to have even more of a voice than it does and I like
I want to make it clear. That's not me saying that Ted Carter at Ross Bjork a Ryan day like I've been in the wrong right like Ross Bjork
Is he came on our show like he's he has been outspoken, but like it's been different than I think the way the SEC has been outspoken
It's been different approaches and I'm not saying is either is right or wrong
But there's going to be a new voice now entering this conversation and does that voice sound any different?
There's a look at any different. Yeah, yeah, this is not it's it's by hey, man
Then whoever comes in next you have three dudes who are who seem to be in lockstep with how they want to think with the direction of
Ohio State athletics and Ohio State football in general and is that new third person going to be in lockstep with those people
I do think and I don't want to go
We don't have to deep dive into what that was on Friday
But I do think that was a misstep that Petiti said nothing at least from what we saw it didn't seem like he said much
I think and it's one of those situations to it's why I said Notre Dame had a representative in the room because they're not in the conference
So they got to have their athletic director there and it's like I don't know like Urban Meyer was there
But he wasn't there on the half of Ohio State he was there as one of the two head former head coaches who won a lot of championships
Though neither one like or which even then it's like Urban Meyer never dealt with NIL during his time as a head coach in college football
Nick Saban's been out of the sport for three years now, but that's that's not what we're here today
Urban also like played around in golf with Donald Trump
So it's very likely that Donald could have just been like hey come no sure
Yeah, that's sure and that's why I don't like I'm a mad engine. We're getting people checked out of this
I thought that was a missed opportunity for the big tent to not say anything
With the powers that be in this country sitting out around table regardless of what the result of that round table is like you have
I get it. You don't want to tweet. You don't want to talk. That's not tweeting and talking trash
That's that office still
Who is at least publicly showing that he is trying to support to figure out things whether it gets for or not
And there was a minute that was an opportunity and it was missed by Tony Petiti to not say a single word during that thing
We don't know what happened behind the scenes though, so we're not gonna go far to any further than that
Greg Sanky was one of like the five people who gave like opening remarks
Like Saban it was the Yankees president
It was like like Marco Rubio speaker like speaker the house like people like that and like Greg Sanky and it's like
Will you know it man? Come on. Yeah, speak
press the little button on the microphone and speak
Speak and that's because it's it's and that goes back to the only reason we're talking about this is it goes back to
Winnell, Ohio State decides to be a team player but versus Winnell, Ohio State's got to go out there on its own
And do what needs to be done for the betterment of Ohio State and Gene Smith always had to strike that balance
Was it perfect? No, but he he had to understood he had to strike that balance
I'm sure Christina M. Johnson understood that balance
I'm sure that Ross Bjork is figuring out that balance for himself
And I'm sure the next president they'll have to figure out what that balance is and Ryan Day as head go to the football team has to find
Has to had to find that balance. It's it's not easy when you are you don't need this conference
But you're in it and there are benefits to being in the big 10
Are you one of the major benefits to being in the big 10? Yes, but you're in it and so that's that's always going to be a challenge
Yeah, and that's the athletic side of this. I don't have anything else on this
I just want to get to my hypothetical if that's okay. Yeah, let's let's do it
I think that was too serious. I would like to listen to this point. You're just like
Man, they mentioned the president and the commissioner and then yeah, I just say it's president like
The next part. I think you'll enjoy some. Yeah, just so we can hit all the buzzwords CSE
Yeah, we're done. Let's take a break and then get back to what this is supposed to be and that's fun here on Buck. I talk

We had a mature moment there where we had to get into the side of every job has busy work
I would describe that part of the job for us is like busy work
Because it's not are they gonna run counter on third and one or who's the starting left guard?
It's like, you know busy work. It's like when we do the the you know
The podcast after Ryan day presser is which the next time you hear from us will be after a Ryan day presser
Finally, but like when we do one of those and it's like okay. Here's the news
It's Ryan Day saying that Lorenzo style shoulder is is the nagging injury
Yari yari yari okay now that we got that out of the way devon Sanchez for Heisman question
Is the time can we start can we start talking about devon Sanchez with the
Yeah, that's that that's actually what it is. Yeah, that's the news box
I need to I'm about to start ziggin you know my Zach too well anyway Jim Trezzo Ohio State University
Walk with me. Am I crazy or am I crazy?
It took about two seconds whether it be my personal text messages where I have Ohio State fans and our subtext six one four three five
three one five for people to be like Jim Trezzo Ohio State president is it time is it time can we do it and like if you are someone who the moment
There's a authoritative authoritative opening at Ohio State in your first thought is like someone related to football
Jim Trezzo's like kind of maybe the most like fit candidate for or something like that right
He's had the role at Youngstown State right whether it be football or university president side
He's worked as the lieutenant governor the last year or whatever it's been
In the state of Ohio he has a voice
Nationally as kind of someone who is probably a perfect figurehead for the balance of
federal and state you know laws with how they impact college athletics and college football specifically like he has
Avoicing that already in the state of Ohio and it has for probably a few years now it
It makes sense like if it's something that he wants to do
I think it's probably a name you have to consider and from the athletics perspective
That's the name that you're probably just fine with having at the head
So I think at first glance you just hear the name Jim Trezzo and he gets like fan fictiony a little bit right
It's like how we want to bring it's like when we send somebody in transfer portal. We always send them home
You know it's like oh this guy if he hops in the portal. Okay. Where's he from he's from florida?
Okay, he's gonna go to florist state. He's like, I don't know maybe he goes Idaho or something right so it's that
That's the first one was a was a book. I had before he was even done being an Indian lion. Yeah
Yeah, yeah, I was like who said I was going anywhere and that was that Tennessee
Yeah, it's crazy
But then take a step back because I think even when you sent it in our work group chat
I was like well
And then I wrote about it at cleveland.com which is how a lot of things get rid of that cleveland.com someone goes
Well, and then it's like
Now we not do this for free in this. Let me put some let me put some content on the site real quick
I actually don't think it's a bad hot. I don't think he's a bad candidate
Let me change that because who let's see who else right again. This is the president. This is a whole different
Set of criteria for what you need to have there in order to be that
I do know when he tried
When he was first being considered as youngstown states
President back in like 2013 like there was some hesitation because most people who were presidents have doctrines
And he did not have a doctor by the way
I don't know if he has one now at this point as I'm sitting here recording this podcast
But I do know that at some point and he ended up becoming youngstown
Youngstown states president about a year after that and he was in that position until like 2020
Before he left and now he is the
67th deputy lieutenant governor of Ohio
So I do think listen in all seriousness if you're looking for the dude who like hey
Why don't we make this dude who won a national championship a long time ago the new president of Ohio state
He at least has a resume where you can put it on the table
Does it mean he gets the job? I don't know
I guess that's up to the board of trustees and everybody else who makes those decisions there
But if he at least has a resume that suggests I think he's capable of doing this job
He's been a president before he's been in a position of leadership before
He's been one of the three pillars that we're talking about he's been the head coach out of Ohio state
So he knows the lay of the land here. He knows the fish bowl
He would be walking into and if you're worried about you're coming off of two presidents who kind of ended things on a fishy note
And do you really want to go with the guy who left here on a fishy note think about like this?
Jeremiah Smith Riley Petagion any player you want to name
I promise you they've been trading jerseys for tattoos now and nobody cares
The reason he had to step down from his job because he didn't reveal something
He knew because he knew that players were exchanging memorabilia for tattoo
That's not going to get anybody in trouble today exchanging anything for money
He's not going to get you in trouble for anything today
So he got him and Maurice Clarrett and Reggie Bush those types got in trouble for rules that were outdated and probably should have been
Let go years ago right because if Ryan Day knows about
His
Second string tied in is going to get a tattoo and he signed a jersey to get the tattoo like Ryan though nobody cares about that
And plus he's been around the program lately
Ryan Day really overlast couple of you since
2022 when Ohio State honored the 2002 team and Jim Trustles on the field and they're like lifting them above his head and whatnot
Jim Trustles just kind of been around Ohio State
And Ryan Day's built a relationship with him at this point
So I don't think that's going to matter what happened back in May of 2011 ahead of that year at this point
So if you take that and put it aside for a second
I think you look at a resume of a guy who has worked in government at this point
Side by side with the Ohio governor. He's been a university president before
He's Ohio born and raised and he's been a buckeye
I don't know that that's checking a lot of boxes off and you know
He's going to care and have an investment in athletics because that's the world he comes from
So that's I don't think it's crazy does he should he be the only candidate?
Of course not I think clearly the the process for how Ohio State goes about finding its university presidents
And he's to evolve a little bit because you can't keep having this you can't keep having presidents
Step down in the middle of ten years like this. It's not great
It's not a good look from a PR standpoint more importantly. It's not a good look from like just a continuity
Stand point and like keep in the train moving as normal. You can't have these type of issues going on
So you never think it's so different from the football coach right like continuity right you
You bring in a new football coach and all of a sudden the you know players
You have on your roster have to learn a new system new terminology new culture right like it all impacts things
And Ohio State and it's even like in their release like they are very happy with like what's happened on the academic side
You know with with tech Carter and they obviously want you remember steps in to be a continuation of that right?
And that's not necessarily always easy to do right?
You have your board of trustees in place, but when there's a new leader right everyone
You know with it all there things change right and you got to adapt and whatever may be which I guess like it if you are
You know looking for the pros and cons of of Jim trestle like you're your last two presidency
So been so short and lack of continuity that
Hiring someone who's 73 maybe it doesn't bode of the best example of that
But also like I don't know Indiana higher Christian any of people are like he's old. Okay. They want an adding
He doesn't seem like he's going anywhere like he's joking about retiring
But I don't think he's actually going to retire. I hope he certainly hope he doesn't retire
Yeah, it's like like it sounds like fan fiction at first
But it's like okay
We're not like talking about urban Meyer being the president of Ohio State just because he was the football coach
We're not talking about you know
Jonathan Cooper or Ryan Day or someone stepping into the presidency just because they were the football coach at Ohio State
Like Jim trestle is a very like a rarely uniquely qualified individual for this in which he yes
He was Ohio State's football coach very successful and won a national title
But like he's done everything outside of athletics that suggests like he can do a role like this
I'm like I want to make it clear. This is not like either of us like advocating for Jim to to be the guy
I just think in the state of where college athletics are
He is also uniquely fit for like this time as well
And I think that's we're basically just trying to make the case of like if you hear someone say Jim trestle
Don't roll your eyes immediately like there is maybe some value to a guy like that being there because and we talked about this again
Like last week or earlier this week and we talked about it on the first part of this pod like with with the round table going on
like a big thing that was being discussed is like
Donald Trump listing examples of like hey ruckers universities athletic department
Lost a lot of money last year and if ruckers university is going to exist
They cannot be a hundred billion dollars of debt every fiscal year
Through their athletic department and Ohio State's in a good spot right they profited this past year
But a couple years ago they didn't profit and Ross Bjork told us like hey like don't freak out
Like where you're in line to make a pretty big profit the next year and he was right
Right and football winning national championship helps with that
But also these media rights deals are only getting bigger and bigger
But it's like
Listen does Ohio State want to put a jersey patch on the iconic Ohio State jersey probably not
But in order to ensure that every other year you're not 20 million dollars in debt
It probably helps to have a 20 million dollar jersey patch deal in place just in case like that is the reality of this like
The athletic side of this is extremely important now until we get like some kind of like rules in place
The athletic side of this is very important a guy like Jim trestle probably has a pretty good understanding of that
And also like him being the lieutenant governor right now while we struggle to get like any kind of like federal
Like stability in place. It probably helps that your president can pick up the phone have a pretty good relationship with the governor
And say hey, can we change this NIL rule?
Can we like hey? California is now saying that the house settlement doesn't matter anymore. Yeah
Can we because this is how this all started right a judge in California passed a bill and it's like hey
USC and UCLA are about to offer whatever money these guys want in terms of NIL
So like sure Ohio State your Ohio State you have a lot of power go try getting the quarterback from
California where you can offer him a full-ride scholarship
U.S.T. can offer him a full-ride scholarship with the with a sponsorship deal with Lamborghini
And that's that's how this all started until there's like federal structure
It's hard for anything besides that to really make a lot of sense
You your your your president used to have a pretty good presence with the people in charge in the state of Ohio
Right and of course this is still remains like an athletic conversation that that relationship matters
Trust will also has that but it's an athletic conversation because it spills into everything else right like the concept of football pace for everything
It does to an extent. Yes, that that money is not just going to be
Yeah, there's a revenue sharing and all these other things
But it also can help with other like it can help with the academics
It can help with the OSU Medical Center and all these other different things right let's do let's your state branched off
Right like if yeah, if the university doesn't have to worry about pouring more money to help its athletic department sustain because the football is making so much money
Then it's like okay, that's 20 million that Ohio State University doesn't have to put toward the athletic department
They can put it in the medical center or whatever whatever you want to put it right so like you're right
This is not us going Jim Trossel president of Ohio State make it happen two day right now
We're not waving anybody's flag what we are saying is if
That resume happens to slide across somebody's desk. Don't just slide it off take a second open it review it send it along
Put it in the seriously considering category. I think that's the best you can ask for because again
Who knows who might pop up who else might pop up in these situations because who does right right now?
There's going to be an interim person in place and I'm sure there will be a process here
Tweet it a little bit so that this doesn't happen for a third time and a span of
Four years because you can't I can't keep happening and just consider
Dude who wants one you a championship?
It's all we're asking
Ah, yeah, why not you live in Ohio while you're qualified. You understand the other side of things
You have a degree from a university. I do
To away from being qualified for this job
Listen, what's the worst they could say? Oh, they wanted to say no. I just won't hear from them
So yeah, see what means president for Ohio State University. I'll be the end of this university very very quick
I think you know what in all seriousness. We'd have one heck of a good year
He'd put all the money in football. What why am I like listen? So I have let this is a hypothetical number. Let's just say I had
500 million dollars to work with
250 here you go Ryan 50 no hold on 250 here you go Ryan 100 here you go Jake the other 150 here you go
Oh, it's you medical center everybody's happy. He should have said that. Oh, I don't know if you should have said that all
Yeah, probably not
You know
