and communities across LA County get money for parks and green spaces.

It's Tuesday, March 17th. I'm Julia Paskin, and this is the LA Report Evening Edition from LAS News.

LA County Board of Supervisors is taking its first step to protect communities in the
1:15
Santa Monica Mountains from fires. The Board approved a motion today that directs LA County
1:20
fire and other groups to look into creating a regional fire mitigation authority. That would
1:25
bring in homeowners, nonprofits, environment groups, and other stakeholders on how to best
1:29
mitigate wildfires in those mountains. The departments are expected to report back with their
1:34
findings in 90 days. This historic March heat wave brings a high risk of heat illness,
1:40
not just during the daytime, but also during the evening.
1:43
Meteorologist Rose Schonfeld with the National Weather Service says though there will be a little
1:48
relief overnight. For downtown LA, we're looking at overnight lows in the mid-60s or so,
1:54
but other places, especially in some of those warmer areas in the flood hills,
1:58
could see low temperatures that only cool off right around 80.
2:02
This extreme heat will last through Friday by Sunday some cooling may begin.
2:06
Dozens of communities in LA will see an influx of grant funds for open spaces. Destiny Torres has
2:12
more. A grant award of $78 million will be spread throughout the county for building and
2:18
improving parks, speeches, and trails. Most of the grant dollars are going to communities
2:23
identified by the county as having high park needs. Funds come from LA County's Measure A,
2:29
an annual special tax on county properties passed by voters in 2016.
2:34
Officials say this is the largest competitive grant investment in the county's history.

The United Farm Workers Union is pulling out of Caesar Chavez Day celebrations on March 31,
3:51
amid allegations against the organizers co-founder. Chavez helped create UFW in 1962,
3:58
and was a key figure in the labor movement. Now the union says they are learning of troubling
4:02
accusations that may include abuse of minors. It's going to set up an independent and confidential
4:09
channel for people Chavez may have harmed to come forward and seek accountability.
4:13
Senate Democrats are bracing for a showdown on President Trump's signature legislation called
4:18
the Save Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. Senator Alex
4:23
Padilla denounced the bill today for changing election rules to favor Republicans when Trump is
4:28
facing some of his lowest approval ratings ever. Working families are paying the price
4:34
for the Trump Republican failed agenda. And they know they will suffer the consequences
4:42
this November in the midterms as a result. Padilla said he's ready to stay all day and night
4:48
for multiple weeks to ensure the Save Act doesn't pass. Trump has asked Senate Republicans to get
4:54
rid of the filibuster to get the legislation through. Well, if you're hoping to watch an
4:59
LA Olympic event in person, you'll first need a ticket. And the deadline for that first step in
5:04
the process is before midnight tomorrow. That's Wednesday. Adolfo Guzman Lopez has the details.
5:10
That first step is registering for the drawing to get a slot to buy tickets. People will be notified
5:16
between March 31st and April 7th if they've been picked. Then ticket sales open days later
5:21
with a pre-sale for LA area residents. There's a 12-ticket limit. Kids and babies will love the Olympics,
5:28
but they need a ticket too. Olympics organizers have no problem if you resell your tickets.
