Pulse Boney said that Cade Cavalli has been the one to turn heads in spring trainings,
1:33
but also don't look away because Brady House, he's turned a lot of heads as well.
1:44

And later on in today's show, we'll be discussing USA getting the silver medal in the World
2:10
Baseball Classic in an electric game last night against Team Venezuela that also featured
2:16
a couple of Nationals, one wanted to be a hero, and one certainly did not.
2:21
So we'll discuss that later on in the program today.
2:24
And in the second segment, Jake Irvin has had a strong spring training.
2:28
Do not look past it, but we start off today's show discussing Cade Cavalli and what he
2:33
has done and what Pulse Boney has said about him, but also don't look away because our
2:38
guy Brady House has done the exact same thing by turning some heads.
2:44
But today's episode is brought to you by MLB The Show 26.

3:03
So yesterday Jim Bowden of the Athletic, he does an annual kind of survey and he asks
3:10
executives and coaches around the game and he gets them for someone inside their organization
3:18
who has turned heads.
3:20
And the one that Pulse Boney gave was Cade Cavalli and here's what Pulse Boney had to
3:26
Cade has made some adjustments to his pitch mix that we're all very excited about, but
3:32
most excited about the guy that he is, the leader that he is, he's an extremely competitive
3:37
accountable player who can serve as a model for others on the team.
3:41
Obviously some very bright words and he has been named the opening day starter and he's
3:47
the guy to go up against the Chicago Cubs and in that piece, Jim Bowden, who's a former
3:54
nationals GM, he kind of went in on Cade Cavalli a little bit and said he showed up this
3:58
spring with a handlebar mustache having made adjustments to his pitching plan and pitch
4:05
And the results have been so positive that he was named the team's opening day starter.
4:09
The one stop pitching prospect is prime for his breakout year.
4:14
I think he is prime for his breakout year and I do think that we have talked about
4:18
Cade Cavalli having a breakout season, the curveball, the new pitch mix, having a new
4:25
improved change up in his fastball riding up into the upper 90s, but also I don't even
4:31
think he's been the best player in spring training.
4:33
I think that has been Brady House.
4:36
If I were Pulse Boney and if I were asked who has been turning heads in spring training,
4:42
I would say the nationals third baseman Brady House.
4:46
So far in spring training like there has been no doubt about it.
4:51
Brady House has been the MVP for the Washington Nationals.
4:55
If you look at some of the numbers, which by the way, he also just had another double
5:00
yesterday, House is crushing the baseball.
5:04
He has a 906 slug with six doubles, three home runs and really good defense to back
5:13
I never want to just look away from really good production over the course of 30 plus
5:19
at bats in spring training.
5:22
It is limited action.
5:25
It's about a week's worth of that bat to be put everything together.
5:28
But Brady House has really put together probably his best spring training yet.
5:34
And I do think that this is real.
5:35
I don't think this is just a blip in the radar.
5:38
I do feel as if that House is prime for that breakout that we have all anticipated since
5:44
being called up in 2025.
5:48
And really there are signs that he has improved number one, his approach.
5:54
When I have watched that baseball, the spring training pretty limited because they only
5:58
have a couple of games on TV.
6:00
But when I have watched him, his approach does seem different and even then seeing him
6:05
interact with the media and interacting with the guys and seeing the different videos have
6:11
been put that have been put out with this regime.
6:14
You have seen a much different, more confident Brady House.
6:18
I have always been one that I feel as if I can read body language and he just feels more
6:23
confident in himself.
6:25
And I do think the nationals have done a great job of getting him the right resources,
6:31
getting him true media to scout himself.
6:34
And I think that with a lot of these different guys, you're going to see them get just a little
6:41
Brady House might be the one guy to get a lot better.
6:44
And I do think that is a real chance because if you think about it, last year it was not
6:50
his best season, like his rookie year was not too great.
6:54
I think we've all said it, we've all talked about it.
6:57
But even further than that, he just seemed lost and the power was not really there.
7:03
The hard hits were not really there.
7:05
The high exit bellows weren't really there.
7:07
The strikeouts, they were there defensively, he was really good at third base.
7:12
That's kind of what he has to hang his hat on in 2025.
7:16
But I think this is the year where Brady House can actually finally break out and we're
7:21
talking about someone who maybe hits 20 home runs this season.
7:25
We can be talking about someone who has 25 to 30 doubles on the year, a couple of triples
7:30
in there maybe get a little crazy.
7:33
If you put him in the right scenarios to hit guys in, I think you will have some really
7:39
big eye popping numbers for the nationals by the end of this season.
7:44
He is the one guy that so far in spring training, listen, we've talked about the offensive
7:49
I feel as if that it is an adjustment period when it comes to the nationals in this new
7:54
regime and there's kind of a lot of information being thrown at them literally because you've
8:00
You've got a different philosophy.
8:02
Guys are thinking a lot more than actually just doing the thing and I think right now is
8:07
the time to make those exact mistakes.
8:10
But there has been one guy who has responded to it very well, the entirety of spring training
8:16
and it's Brady House.
8:19
This is the year that he finally breaks out and this is the year that I do think around
8:26
the board, you get guys like Kate Cavali who gets a little bit better, Brady House gets
8:32
a little bit better or maybe a lot better, CJ Abrams gets a little bit better.
8:39
If you are the Nats at this point, the goal is for everyone to get a little bit better.
8:46
It's not going to be like a CJ Abrams is all of a sudden a great defender.
8:52
We're not going to see Luis Garcia Jr. all of a sudden become a consistent bat.
8:58
But if you can ask them to get just a little bit better, I think the nationals have done
9:04
their job in your woman.
9:06
And so looking at this right now, I've been calling my shot.
9:11
I do feel as if that Brady is ready to break out and I do think that in 2026 we'll be
9:17
talking about a much different hitter with Brady House.
9:23
Someone who does have power, someone who is behind James Wood and able to hit James Wood
9:28
in who by the way has a sprint speed that is well above average at this point.
9:33
Someone who's going to hit behind Dateland Lyle, Dale Lyle has been someone very prone
9:38
to not having the best decisions on the base pass, but I do think he's a great hitter
9:44
and I do think he has a potential to be a really good base runner down the road.
9:49
You have got a lot of different things working for the nationals at this point, but I think
9:53
Brady House might be at the forefront of what the Washington nationals need.
9:57
So I think Paul T'boni naming Kate Follies the guy who has turned his head or turned
10:03
his head throughout spring training.
10:05
He's absolutely right.
10:06
But also I think furthermore than that, Brady House has probably been the guy to really
10:12
turn heads in the spring training.
10:13
He has been the one who has been the most consistent guy on this team and free offense
10:19
that hasn't looked too great, that it ranks in the bottom three of the league in OPS and
10:23
slugging and on base percentage and batting average.
10:28
You've had an offensive standout with Brady House.
10:31
That is something to hang your hat on and I think the nationals certainly have acknowledged
10:35
the fact that Brady House could be coming into a big breakout season in 2026.
10:42
Next I want to get into Jake Irvin.
10:45
Jake Irvin has looked really good.
10:49
What does it mean for the nationals if he does do this in 2026 and how big of a development
10:55
would it be if Jake Irvin can turn the season around and his career around quite frankly.
11:00
Let's talk about that after this.
11:08
Before that today's episode is brought to you by Fandall and college basketball is nonstop
11:13

11:17

and now Fandall is giving you a way to turn that energy into an even larger potential
11:27
wins with a college basketball parlay profit boost.
11:30
And last night for instance, I had Texas and I also had Howard, the DC team right here
11:37
I parlayed those two things together, well, I may not have always won.
11:41
You can still look at the odds with Fandall and I got them at around plus for 50.
11:45
It made my college basketball watching experience a lot better and I can tell you this much.
11:50
The profit boost and instantly bump on the potential payout.
11:53
It makes me feel really good and also just is a lot of fun to bet throughout the playoffs.

14:33
We've been talking positively about the nationals and I think with Paul Taboni saying that
14:38
Kate Valle has turned head so far in spring training.
14:41
There's another arm on this staff who in my opinion has also turned some heads and that's
14:47
Jake Irvin is a very interesting guy to watch.
14:51
The 29 year old going into this season is coming off.
14:55
This is beyond a seer.
14:58
His worst season in baseball.
15:01
This was a really bad season from in 2025 and there were some legit questions surrounding.
15:08
Maybe this guy isn't going to be in the rotation in 2026, but ultimately the nationals
15:14
did not really do too much to push him in spring training and maybe they made the right decision
15:19
because coming off a year of which 33 starts get a 570 array.
15:24
Just take that for what it's worth a hundred and 80 innings pitch, a hundred and 95 hits
15:30
and 38 home runs given up like it was a disgusting 2025 for Jake Irvin, but he has come in
15:37
a spring training so far and he has looked like a completely different person.
15:42
So far in four starts in spring training, he has actually been really good.
15:47
He's only given up runs in one outing in his last one just six days ago on March 12 against
15:53
the Houston Astros in which he gave up a couple of earned runs in three plus innings pitch.
15:58
But yesterday he just wrapped up his best game yet.
16:01
Five innings pitch going up against the, I'm sorry, I pulled up on the wrong game log here,
16:08
but it was the St. Louis Cardinals, not the Houston Astros, but he is coming off his best
16:16
And five innings pitch only given up one hit yesterday, our three hits yesterday only
16:21
walking one batter and also striking out five.
16:24
And if you've noticed so far, and again, it's only been four starts and he hasn't really
16:29
gone past five innings besides one time and that was just yesterday.
16:33
But his strikeout numbers are actually looking pretty good as well.
16:37
He is pounding the zone, he's painting the corners, you're starting to see him have
16:41
a feel for his slightest sweeper again.
16:44
And I think that Jake Irvin is someone that should be noteworthy moving forward because
16:51
I feel as if we tend to forget what was in 2024.
16:58
Jake Irvin in the first half of 2024, like we were literally talking about him being
17:05
And after that July 4th start of which he went eight innings completely dominated the
17:10
New York Mets, we didn't really talk about him after that.
17:15
And the reason why is because he absolutely struggled and he went on and just completely
17:21
fell off in the second half and it just felt as if that he just kind of ran out of gas.
17:27
We have talked about his velocity dropping in a couple of miles per hour over the seasons.
17:32
And even then his fastball Velo is still down in the lower 90s.
17:37
It hasn't risen up really since pre 2024.
17:41
So that is something to note when it comes to Jake Irvin.
17:44
Is it running out of gas, is it over usage, or is this just the pitch that he is now?
17:50
But we have made a big deal with it because obviously his fastball has been tattooed over
17:56
And the number two last year is coming off a season of which he went up like the most
17:59
home runs in baseball.
18:01
You've got to kind of wonder where things are at with Jake Irvin.
18:06
Well, he is coming off his best spring training and he is coming off his best start by foreign
18:15
Maybe the nationals have figured out a way to just finesse the situation with Jake Irvin.
18:22
Maybe they have found a rhythm of which he's going to have to find in the regular season
18:27
again and ultimately help this national team win some more games.
18:33
He is entering a very pivotal season for his career.
18:38
Don't make any mistake about it.
18:39
Like I don't think Jake Irvin is on the hot seat or anything like that because quite
18:43
frankly the nationals don't really have that many starting pitchers pushing him at this
18:48
But Jake Irvin is certainly to be in the rotation in 2027.
18:55
He struggles this year.
18:58
It's rotation because while again, you don't really have that many guys pushing you.
19:04
You do have a Luis Peralas type who I think will be in the rotation eventually this season
19:09
and will have a pretty impactful year at some point.
19:12
I think DJ Hurs comes back healthy for the nationals and certainly pushes someone out of
19:18
Foster Griffin has been really exciting.
19:22
Brad Lord coming out of the bullpen I think could be really interesting.
19:26
But it is something to note that Jake Irvin might be one of those guys who goes back to
19:32
his old self because it feels as if we may have pretty maturedly written him off.
19:38
And now as he started to really pitch well down and spring training, maybe it does make
19:43
you think a little bit differently about where things are at with Jake Irvin.
19:47
And I do think the nationals, if you can get him to turn his season around and really
19:52
just turn things around in general, then the nationals are in pretty good shape of where
19:58
And I do think that they kind of need it.
20:01
And if you're looking at this thing from a 30,000 foot view, you've got no help pitching
20:07
outside of Cade Cavali.
20:10
You've got a couple of guys that might be intriguing.
20:12
But overall, I don't think anybody can say that they're confident that any pitcher outside
20:18
of Cade Cavali will be in the 2027 rotation.
20:21
Can you confidently say that?
20:24
So that's kind of where I'm at.
20:25
And I do think that Irvin has done really well.
20:28
But what does happen to see if we can carry it over in 2026.
20:32
And if he can, that is probably one of the biggest developments for the nationals in
20:37
Because this is someone who, again, has had talent, has had all-star campaign-like seasons.
20:42
It's just a matter of him staying consistent and keeping the ball in the yard.
20:47
That's really what it comes down to with Jacob and a simple as that.
20:51
But next I want to talk about USA getting silver and some nets on nets, crime, former
20:58
And one guy, oh boy, you could have expected it.
21:01
We'll tell you after this.
21:07
MLB opening day is almost here and you can feel it.
21:11
Fresh starts and big expectations in that first crack of the bat, whether it's a breakout
21:16
rookie or a division race that goes down to the wire.
21:19
There's nothing like being in the ballpark for it.
21:22
And the only problem is getting tickets.
21:24
It can feel like a grind with long cues and surprise fees and prices jumping up.
21:29
But that's where our friends come at game time.
21:33
The game time app gives fans the advantage with constant innovation and experience in
21:38
just a few taps in the seats view.
21:43
Item is huge when it comes to game time.
21:48
I love game time and what they offer.
21:50
And of course, I can see my views from my phone to make sure there's no obstruction on
21:56
opening day if you're at a regularly field trying to take on the nationals.
22:00
Or maybe you're going to be in Philadelphia.

22:47
talking about our show sponsor MLB the show 26.
22:50
The greatest game in baseball is back with its newest installment and baseball fans are
22:55
going to have a hard time pulling themselves away from the game.
22:59
I can tell you this, I have been playing Dynasty Motions, I got this game just a few days
23:05
I've had James Wood as my superstar player for the Nationals, I built around him, I've
23:09
made certain trades, I've even traded for Roman Anthony, yes, I obliterated the farm
23:14
system but I got that second star in the building with our guy James Wood, it took me giving
23:19
up Dylan Cruz and a couple of our top prospects but hey, we're in the business for one of the
23:24
best outfields in baseball with Wood and Anthony and you know what, we actually won 83
23:30
games in 2026, it's that much fun.
23:33
You can be Paul Tomoni in build and construct your own roster and if you're a gamer or a
23:38
baseball fan or just want to enjoy America's favorite pastime in a new exciting way, you
23:43
are going to love MLB the show 26, you can play as your favorite team and franchise players
23:49
and see if you have what it takes to win your own world series.
23:53
Is it MLB the dot show slash lock them on and use code locked on to unlock a pack for
23:59
use in diamond dynasty, internet connection is required, you can of course, as it is available
24:04
now on PlayStation 5 Xbox Series S and X and Nintendo Switch rated E for everyone.
24:15
Team USA got silver but it really just out shined because there was some former net on
24:21
that crime when it came in the bottom of the eighth inning yesterday, USA versus Venezuela,
24:28
two outs, Bryce Harper had to play and catch out who was pitching against team USA in that
24:35
situation, Andres Machado, the same Andres Machado who is not pitched in a major league
24:43
baseball game since I believe 2023, but let me check that real quick.
24:49
And I saw that Andres Machado is on the roster.
24:53
I kind of thought that to myself and yes, that's right, he has not pitched in baseball and
24:57
major league baseball since 2023.
25:01
The 32 year old pitching for team Venezuela who won gold, going up against Bryce Harper
25:10
and Bryce Harper hitting the game tying home run with two outs in the bottom of the
25:16
I had a tweet fired up ready to go saying that Andres Machado is going to be the reason
25:22
why team USA does not win the World Baseball Classic.
25:27
I switched that up real quick.
25:29
He was the reason why team Venezuela almost lost the World Baseball Classic.
25:34
Listen, even further than that, like while it was pretty funny and there are some good
25:39
theater for nationals fans, last night's stunk.
25:42
I mean, this is team USA's game.
25:44
They should have won yesterday in my mind.
25:46
The bats were awful.
25:48
I thought taking Gunnar Henderson out was a very questionable decision.
25:52
And it's just one of those things where can we have this thing every single season?
25:57
We have to now wait four years for the World Baseball Classic and think of this.
26:02
Bryce Harper may not be on team USA.
26:05
Aaron Judge may not be on team USA in four years.
26:08
They'll certainly be good players, I think.
26:11
But they'll kind of be like Clayton Kershaw, maybe, or it's just like an older mentor.
26:15
And maybe they are still some of the games best.
26:18
But are they going to be the stars?
26:20
I don't know, I can't say that confidently.
26:23
So this was Bryce Harper and Aaron Judges kind of last chance to break out with team USA
26:29
and win that gold medal and going up against team Venezuela who is the lesser against team
26:35
Dominican Republic who had a loaded offense.
26:38
And Venezuela also had a very good offense, like Euhinho Sures was certainly a name to
26:45
He balled out, Michael Garcia, third baseman for the Kansas City Royals.
26:50
He is certainly a real pleasure to watch.
26:53
And team Venezuela, they got the job done.
26:56
And unfortunately for team USA, they're now going to have to wait for the next four years.
27:01
But I thought someone was really cool, by the way, at the end of it.
27:07
He was actually handing out the medals for the World Baseball Classic and had some words
27:12
for team USA and each and every single one of the players.
27:16
It seems pretty pivotal in a year where the CBA is going to be expiring after this season.
27:23
And also, players are going to be fighting for the right to play in the Olympics in
27:27
2027 when it's here in Los Angeles.
27:30
Now we'll rail Rob Manfred in the players association, allow these guys to go out and
27:35
compete in the middle of the season.
27:37
Will they pause Major League Baseball?
27:39
That's probably the big question.
27:40
And I think in a work stoppage situation, that's kind of what they are dealing with at
27:45
this point when it comes to team USA.
27:47
And who knows, maybe Major League Baseball won't be playing in the summer months there.
27:52
Maybe they will be still locked down.
27:54
Maybe there is no season in 2027.
27:56
That's certainly a possibility.
27:57
I would probably bet against it, but it's also something to watch.
28:01
But I thought it was really cool with everything going on.
28:04
Rob Manfred, who gets a lot of shrapnel, did a cool thing and handed out the medals and
28:10
I thought that was a cool, classy situation.
28:12
So unfortunately, the World Baseball Classic is over.
28:15
There was a fun ride.
28:17
You saw a couple of former nationals.
28:19
You saw Matt Marivus, make the nationals proud with team Israel.
28:22
You saw Harry Ford really break out for team Great Britain.
28:26
It has been so much fun covering this tournament.
28:30
But unfortunately, the time is over.
28:33
So I will catch you guys in the flip side.
