1:06
Hey there, Cardinals fans.
1:08
And on today's show, the Cardinals add a new left hander to their 40-man roster.
1:12
We're going to read off some comments in our Cardinal Confessions.
1:15
But to quote the late, great Jack Buck, I don't believe what I just saw.
1:22
Said that after Kirk Gibson's home run against Dennis, actress Lee and the A's back in
1:28
Well, this game wasn't quite the same significance, that was the World Series, but I'm borrowing
1:35
Oh my gosh, how much fun was that?
1:39
Incredible, miraculous, unbelievable, preposterous.
1:44
How about this one from the Princess Bride, inconceivable.
1:49
I am sure that there are other words to describe what we saw, but are you kidding me?
1:55
The old saying, it's always darkest before the dawn, never rain more true than what we
2:00
witnessed on Monday night in Pittsburgh, the St. Louis Cardinals offense, sleepwalking through
2:07
the first eight innings of this game.
2:10
They did not have a single-base runner until there were two outs in the seventh inning.
2:14
The pirate's bullpen game was working to perfection for whatever reason the Cardinals
2:19
always seem to have trouble with bullpen games from other teams.
2:24
And until Alec Burleson tapped, what was perfectly described by Chip Carey as an infield
2:29
squibber, perfect description, the pirate's her basement, Nick Gonzalez, almost made an outstanding
2:36
play on to get Burleigh at first, but Burleigh hustling all the way and he just beats the
2:39
throw to break up the perfect game and the no-hitter at the same time.
2:44
At this point, you're thinking, well, at least crisis subverted, right?
2:48
Even if we lose this game, at least we didn't have a no-no thrown or a perfect game thrown
2:54
But at the same time, I even said to my wife, I was like, I mean, it's still only a two-run
3:01
It's not like the pirates are blowing them out.
3:03
It's not like we're getting crushed by them.
3:05
So the old Chip Carey, you know, blew up in a blast, theory would work here.
3:10
Alas, it was not meant to be in that seventh inning.
3:12
Jordan Walker goes down looking to end it and the eighth inning, the Cardinals get a single
3:15
by Jose for me, but then Mason Wynn hits into that nifty double play that was turned
3:20
by Brandon Lau and Connor Griffin, tip of the cap to you.
3:26
So off to the ninth inning, they go.
3:28
Score is still two to nothing, pirates turn things over to their very good closer in
3:32
Dennis Santana, who gets the lead off guy Thomas and JC to ground out, which brought in Pedro
3:39
And we hadn't seen Pedro since Saturday when he was having that monster game going three
3:46
for three with the two run shot against Seattle, but he had to leave early with hamstring
3:53
And we were all kind of worried, like, oh, no, because it didn't look great, right?
3:58
The his reaction to it all, it didn't look great.
4:01
Man, expected him to go on the IL, but no move was made on Sunday.
4:05
And there he was back in the lineup on Monday and after falling into the whole O2, he catches
4:09
a slider from Santana.
4:10
They got a bit too much of the play and he shoots it over the wall in left field to put the
4:15
cartels on the board.
4:16
And all of a sudden, it's a two to one ball game, one run.
4:20
This brings up the hometown kid in J.J.
4:24
Now J.J. grew up in Pittsburgh as a pirates fan was making his major league debut on this
4:29
field where his favorite player, Andrew McCutchan, used to run.
4:34
As nerve-racking a moment as you can get, he's got dozens and dozens of family and friends
4:39
on hand to watch him and the teams getting no hit for most of the game.
4:47
And they're just, they're just a special number of athletes who can rise to the occasion.
4:53
When the game is on the line, they're the guys who want the ball or want to be at the plate.
4:59
And so far in his major league career, J.J. is proving that he is indeed one of these
5:04
special athletes who will not cower in the limelight.
5:08
And he proved it again here after working a full count.
5:10
He smashes a Santana fastball into the Pittsburgh night and over the right center field wall,
5:16
game tying, solo home run, we're all knotted up.
5:19
What an awesome moment for him and his family, but J.J. wasn't done yet.
5:23
Now we've got a ball game.
5:24
Now we're tied up and there's a chance to win this.
5:26
So we get back-to-back J.J. to tie it up.
5:29
Cardinals just kept attacking and kept being really smart at the plate.
5:32
Devon Herrera, who's been his patient as anybody in baseball this year, works as six
5:38
Now you got Santana really, really because he's giving up the home runs.
5:42
Now he can't throw strikes.
5:43
Alec Burleson hits a legitimate Q-shot, like hilarious, right down the third baseline.
5:51
It starts fair and then it spins foul and then it spins back into fair territory.
5:56
Just kind of dies on the chalk there for an infield single.
5:59
Never even made it to the third base back.
6:01
Didn't even get that far, but it just died like a perfect fund.
6:05
And that brings in Jordan Walker, who I know.
6:07
He's been cold recently, but has an outstanding at that against Santana.
6:12
kept trying to get him to chase, chase, chase, and he wouldn't fall for it.
6:17
That's all they're doing now, low on a way, crap.
6:19
Everyone's throwing Jordan right now.
6:21
And he finally says, you're either bringing it in or I'm not swinging.
6:26
Works another walk, had two walks on Sunday.
6:31
Keep that batter's eye going, buddy.
6:34
Now you got the bases, Jews, for Jose, for mean.
6:36
Still only one out in the ending.
6:38
There's no place to put him.
6:39
So for me, knows that he needs to throw strikes.
6:42
And normally I'm somebody who's all about being patient at the plate,
6:45
but I get it in this situation.
6:46
If somebody throws something over the heart of the plate, you like it.
6:52
And for mean jumps on a first pitch slider,
6:54
rips it down the line and left for a two-run double to give the birds a four to two lead.
6:58
And that's the way this one would end.
7:00
An absolutely mind-boggling come back to go from absolutely nothing.
7:07
Nothing for almost seven headaches.
7:10
No offense, no base runners.
7:14
Could have just put nobody at the plate and it would have been just as good.
7:18
You go from that to winning the baseball game
7:21
when you're down to your last two outs.
7:24
That's absolutely amazing.
7:25
After the game, Olli spoke about the win
7:28
saying that it says a lot that our guys were able to stay engaged and steal this game.
7:33
That's one of the great things about this team.
7:35
Our guys always keep fighting.
7:40
We have seen it multiple times this year.
7:45
10 come from behind victories out of their 15 wins so far this season.
7:51
And after four straight losses, three of them really tough ones to a very good Seattle team.
7:55
It seemed like the boys were in a bit of a funk for most of the game.
8:00
Like I said, sleepwalking is what it looked like.
8:02
But boy oh boy, did they come to life quickly after the pie has dinger and more so after
8:08
JJ left the yard, outstanding stuff, super deflating loss for your opponent.
8:15
So let's hope that when leaves are really bad taste in their mouths and they have like a bit of
8:21
a hangover effect for the next couple games with pirates for the rest of this series,
8:25
you guys can get good again when the Cardinals leave town.
8:28
But that was insane.
8:34
I'm going to talk more about it.
8:36
We've got standout performances from three different guys.
8:39
I want to get to coming up next on Lockdown Cardinals.
8:47
ED is way more common than most guys think.
8:49
Millions of guys actually deal with it at some point.

10:35
So the one person that is,
10:38
in my opinion, truly kind of forgotten in this comeback win,
10:42
is the person that helped get you there in the first place.
10:45
And that is Monday starter Dustin May.
10:50
He was excellent once again.
10:52
And has now four straight solid games under his belt.
10:55
Three of them are quality starts.
10:57
And he was just too outshort in Miami of making it four straight.
11:01
Quality starts on Monday.
11:02
He wins six settings to run seven hits, two walks, two strikeouts.
11:06
Nothing mind-blowing about that line.
11:08
But it kept the guys in the game.
11:11
He never let the game start to snowball against him,
11:15
even when runners got on base.
11:17
And that's what a pitcher's job is to limit the damage.
11:20
Give the team a legitimate shot to win the ball game
11:24
and being that the cardinals are on this stretch of 17 and 17.
11:28
Having him go six innings after what you've got from McGreevy on Sunday
11:34
Following, because you know, you had a wild game on Saturday,
11:37
which just blew everything up all the plans
11:41
that you had for your ball pin, just boom.
11:43
And you still lost the game.
11:44
So really kind of put the ball pin in disarray.
11:47
So having back-to-back really good starts
11:50
from those two guys was huge.
11:54
And you know about the ugly numbers that May had
11:56
in his first two games of the season.
11:58
But his last four starts.
11:59
He's thrown 23 and a third innings,
12:00
has allowed just five earned runs.
12:02
23 hits, which is a lot, I get that.
12:05
But only four walks.
12:06
So he's not hurting himself.
12:08
He's not putting more pressure on himself
12:11
And then he's got 15 strikeouts, which gives him
12:14
an ERA of 1.93 and a fifth of 3.04.
12:19
That's exactly what you're looking for from Dustin May.
12:22
The fastball Velo continues to hover around 97 miles per hour on average.
12:26
He's in the 90th percentile of walk percentage,
12:29
75th percentile of barrel percentage,
12:32
which makes sense considering, you know,
12:34
he gave up two home runs in that game against Detroit
12:37
in the first two games when things weren't going so well.
12:40
And since then, he's only given up one home run.
12:43
So barrel percentage, as far as how he is amongst the league leaders,
12:47
75th percentile, which is really, really good.
12:49
Now teams are hitting ball hard against him.
12:52
He's down in the 21st percentile in that category.
12:54
But he's keeping it in the yard and the Cardinals defences
12:57
doing their job and making the plays behind him.
13:02
Now I did expect the strikeout numbers for Dustin May
13:06
I did, you know, his career average,
13:11
But he's never been a really huge strikeout guy.
13:14
Despite the, you know, good Velo and everything and the movement
13:17
that he's got on that sweeper,
13:20
he's never been like this guy that's striking out 10, 11 per nine.
13:23
It's 8.1's the average.
13:25
And he's down to 6.5 so far this season.
13:28
But if you go look at past years,
13:31
when he's had better seasons,
13:34
his rookie year was really, really good.
13:36
He was at 7.1 strikeouts per nine.
13:39
2023, excellent year, his second best year as a pro,
13:45
So he doesn't need to have the Gaudi strikeout numbers to be effective.
13:50
Clearly, because those two seasons are the best ones he's had in the major leagues.
13:54
And those are two of his lowest strikeouts per nine.
13:57
So I don't want you to freak out because he's not striking out enough people.
14:01
He really just has to stay healthy and so far he has been.
14:04
So solid job, Dustin May, good job.
14:07
Obviously, JJ Weatherhold is the big story in this particular game.
14:14
Coming home to Pittsburgh, hitting the dinger to tie it.
14:17
Three straight games now with the home run.
14:18
An incredible moment in front of his now converting cardinal friends and family.
14:23
He's talking to me, he goes, yeah, you know,
14:25
a lot of Pittsburgh people root for the Cardinals in the stands tonight.
14:29
After the game, he said I really was just trying to get on base and was able to put a good swing
14:33
on the ball. It was good to come through, but it was a great team win.
14:36
And I love to hear that out of him where it was it, you know,
14:40
what you get a young guy? He's like, yeah, I was really cool.
14:42
And you know, I'm super excited.
14:44
He mentions the team team team team team.
14:49
That's that's the kind of leader you want.
14:51
Playing against the team you root for as a kid,
14:53
that's got to be a little weird obviously.
14:54
And I couldn't imagine like playing for the Cubs or the Brewers.
14:59
I'm going to try to take down the Cardinals.
15:02
I feel dirty just saying it and JJ was the same way for sure.
15:05
He was quoted as saying it's kind of a goofy experience,
15:08
but it's such an honor to be here.
15:10
Playing against the team you grew up rooting for will always hold a special place in your heart.
15:14
For me, I feel like it's just how many games I've watched here.
15:17
So I feel like I know this park better than any other park.
15:20
Just being here as a kid and playing here a little bit in college was super cool.
15:24
The backdrop of the city you grew up in to be able to play in a ballpark like that is special.
15:29
How mature does this kid sound?
15:35
Like the maturity of JJ Weatherhold is insane to me.
15:39
Ali chimed in talking about the experience for JJ,
15:43
you know, saying that the cool part is when he hit the home run,
15:46
all his family is sitting there in that one section.
15:48
They all went crazy.
15:49
That's something you'll never forget.
15:52
And he says, I think we've talked a lot about his success early,
15:56
not only offensively, but defensively.
15:58
On the basis is demeanor.
16:00
What he brings to the club.
16:01
There are a lot of positives there, especially for a young kid.
16:04
And that's what I've been most impressed by.
16:06
I mean, I know the stuff we see on the field has been great.
16:11
You know, he's on pace for like this almost 30, 30 season is a rookie.
16:15
Like, but nothing, I'm so impressed with the guy, the human being that he is.
16:21
Nothing seems to face him.
16:24
No moment ever seems too big for him.
16:26
He doesn't come to the plate.
16:26
And I'm like, yeah, there's no way he's coming through here.
16:29
I believe in JJ weather bolt when he comes to the plate.
16:32
I feel like he's always going to do something good.
16:34
And we've already seen that clutch gene pop off a couple times.
16:38
And he's just getting started.
16:39
This is his first month as a majorly player.
16:42
Like kids all over St. Louis,
16:44
you need to go get a JJ weather hole jersey now.
16:47
Because this is a special player.
16:50
He's going to be a role model for them for years to come.
16:54
How do we get him locked up?
16:55
That's, that's the next thing everybody wants to know.
16:57
I get him 10 years and let's go.
16:59
Because you're not going to, at least from what I can see,
17:02
you're not going to find a better human being than what we've seen out of JJ weather hole so far.
17:07
Talks about his faith all the time and how important it is.
17:10
Those are the guys you need around leading this club forever if you can keep him.
17:18
Last guy I want to give some love to is Ryan Fernandez,
17:21
who came into this game after Dustin May.
17:25
And most of us are focused on the fact that the Cardinals don't have any hits.
17:28
They don't have any base runners.
17:29
This perfect game is getting thrown against them.
17:30
And we just kind of brush aside what we saw out of the ball pit on Monday.
17:35
And Ryan Fernandez comes in.
17:39
And he gives you two winnings, no runs, no hits, four strikeouts.
17:45
He keeps you within the two runs so that the bloop and the last type of thing can happen.
17:50
And then you get Soriano who comes in and closes things out.
17:54
You know, you're talking about two guys here that you didn't really expect
18:02
them to be the guys helping you take down a division opponent this year.
18:06
We weren't counting on George Soriano and Ryan Fernandez this year.
18:12
But there they were at the end of this game.
18:16
Finishing things off.
18:18
So tip of the cap to them as well.
18:21
Obviously, shout out to Alec Burleson who ended up with not one but two infield singles because
18:27
speed doesn't slump for biscuits.
18:30
Don't underestimate those wheels.
18:33
The second one in the night still, no clue how that stayed fair.
18:36
Crazy stuff right there.
18:37
Baseball gods down the line.
18:39
They're blowing it, keeping it fair, you know.
18:42
For me to, too, I would expect to see for me in the lineup more.
18:46
You should be rewarded whether he's playing on the infield or the outfield.
18:51
Cardinals claim to pitcher on Monday.
18:53
Whose older brother is really good.
18:56
That is he any good.
18:57
That's the question.
18:58
We'll talk about it next on Lockdown Cardinals.
19:06
If you've got a sweet tooth like I do, you know how tough it is to find that perfect treat
19:10
without all the sugar because it's bad for you.
19:12
That's why the confetti craze five hour energy shot brings that nostalgic flavor back
19:17
in a whole new way and you don't feel bad about drinking it.
19:20
This is that classic taste that you remember but with the tasty caffeine boost
19:25
It's easy and it satisfies that sweet craving that I get from time to time.
19:30
I'm sure you do too.
19:31
And it keeps things simple though.
19:32
And you don't feel bad about drinking it when you're done.
19:34
It's a perfect alternative to the sweets that are filled with all those unwanted calories
19:39
I love how convenient five hour energy is.
19:42
I will say this until the day I die.
19:44
Small, portable shot.
19:46
I can grab whenever I need a little pick me up.
19:48
I need a caffeine boost five hour energy drink.
19:51
I'll work a lot of long hours.
19:53
I've got multiple jobs all the time.
19:56
It's perfect for me.
20:00
And it's become my go-to when I want something sweet.
20:02
And I don't want to get into the bad stuff.
20:06

20:31
Cardinals have claimed left-handed pitcher,
20:33
Luis Peralta off waivers from the Colorado Rockies.
20:38
I'll actually name the AAA Memphis.
20:39
So no corresponding moods were necessary.
20:41
The Cardinals had an open 40-man spot.
20:43
He slides right in.
20:45
25 years old, younger brother of Freddie Peralta,
20:49
who is now with the struggling New York Metz,
20:52
was a starter earlier in his career.
20:53
But got moved to a lever role when he was a minor
20:56
leager with the pirates actually before he got traded.
20:59
And between the two clubs, 47-2-3rds minor league innings
21:03
allowed only 0.93 earned runs per nine.
21:07
Gave out walks at a pretty high rate, though.
21:10
That's been the problem with them.
21:14
40.1% strikeout rate, which you love.
21:17
That's huge number.
21:20
48.8% ground ball rate above average as well.
21:25
Got to make his major league debut.
21:26
He's been in the pros.
21:27
Put up a 0.73 ERA and 12 and a third innings.
21:30
But since then, the command is just vanished
21:33
for whatever reason.
21:34
It has not gone well.
21:35
9.47 ERA in the majors last year.
21:38
9.09 ERA in triple A.
21:41
15.4% walk rate in the majors.
21:45
It's 17.8 has trouble throwing strikes.
21:48
That's really been the problem.
21:50
Began this year at triple A.
21:52
14 earned runs in seven and a third innings
21:55
with a whopping 13 walks.
21:58
He also struck out 14.
21:59
And now we're back and looking at some of the footage
22:01
of him pitching in the major leagues and saw him
22:03
baffle some pretty good hitters,
22:05
including Juan Soto when he was with the Yankee.
22:07
So there's something there.
22:11
But at this point, something's not clipping.
22:15
You know, the the Velo on his fastball.
22:17
It's down a little bit.
22:18
His fourth seamer used to sit at 95.
22:21
It's down to about 93 and a half curveball change up.
22:24
They've also dipped in Velo.
22:26
According to reports, he can be option
22:28
for the remainder of this year.
22:30
And one additional season as well.
22:32
And if things go well, he has less than a year of service time,
22:35
which means he can be affordably controlled for years
22:39
It's a low-by situation.
22:41
The Cardinals don't have much depth
22:42
when it comes to left-handed relievers.
22:44
The kid has shown that he's got some talent.
22:48
Jojo has scuffled recently.
22:50
Justin Brull, you know how I feel about what he's done.
22:54
Maybe they see something in him like they did with Soriano.
22:57
You know, people were like, wait, what?
22:59
Why are we trading Andre Grenillo for George Soriano?
23:02
They're scouts and the guys in charge.
23:04
Maybe they've seen something in Peralta
23:06
that they're like, no, we can work with this.
23:09
We can fix this and make him a useful option.
23:11
If not, you move on.
23:14
So that's my thoughts on Peralta right now.
23:19
Until we get to see him and figure out what he can do
23:21
in a Cardinals uniform.
23:23
But so far this year, it has not been good.
23:25
So expectations, keep them down there.
23:29
Loving the positive comments, though.
23:31
I want to give you guys all credit after last night's game.
23:33
People were losing their minds just like me.
23:35
If you saw my short on YouTube, yeah, I did a Ric Flair Wu.
23:39
I was beside myself with excitement.
23:42
It was so much fun.
23:43
So I wanted to read a few of them here
23:45
in our Cardinal Confessions.
23:46
Because, you know, after four straight losses,
23:49
the ends are starting to get down a little bit.
23:50
And I don't blame you.
23:51
But a couple of these guys do that.
23:53
I was dancing all around work that last inning.
23:55
I effing love baseball.
23:58
The first eight innings practically put me to sleep.
24:00
And then they got to Santana of all people.
24:04
These kids played in the last out.
24:06
I saw the first inning.
24:07
And that was enough.
24:08
And then I turned it back.
24:09
And it was the last inning.
24:13
Cardinal snapped a 36 game scoreless streak in Pittsburgh,
24:16
dating back to last season with the runs in the ninth inning.
24:20
Got their first win on a Monday this season.
24:23
They break their four game losing skids.
24:25
So a lot of good, positive energy came out of this particular game.
24:30
And I hope it's one of those where
24:32
this, you know, kickstart something bigger and better for this young team.
24:37
Uh, in El Central, the Reds have the day off yesterday.
24:39
So there's still at 18 and 10.
24:41
Rockies are visiting them after sweeping the meds.
24:44
So Rockies are believing in themselves right now.
24:47
Cubs lost to the Padres nine to seven.
24:48
Although they did break Mason Miller scoreless streak in the ninth inning.
24:52
They're, uh, they're at 17 and 12 in second place.
24:55
Pirates are now at 16 and 13.
24:56
Cardinals at 15 and 13.
24:58
And then the Brewers who were idle are 14 and 13.
25:01
They'll be hosting Nolan Arnotto and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
25:04
Have you guys seen what Nolan's been doing recently?
25:06
Not on a heater hitting six 11 over his last five games.
25:11
Made some nice defensive plays.
25:13
So, um, good stuff, man.
25:15
Not to keep it up, especially against Milwaukee.
25:19
Beat the hell out of them.
25:22
Uh, tonight, Kyle Leahy on the mound for the Cardinals.
25:24
He has not gone past five innings yet this year.
25:26
So I hope the bullfin is ready.
25:28
Gordon Grasso, you need to be ready.
25:31
Everybody get ready.
25:33
Kyle Leahy started tonight.
25:35
So, uh, maybe he'll surprise us.
25:36
Maybe he'll surprise us.
