A big week for Trump and Republicans as the president looks to flip the midterm script in a first of its kind national convention. How will the event and key campaign investments affect the party's standards? I'm Georgia How with Daily Wire Executive Editor John Bigley. It's Tuesday, September 8th, and this is Morning Wire. VP Vance presents a new plan to pay parents to stay home with their kids, setting off a spirited debate.

1:04There's no new spending here, there's no new bill that needs to be passed. Do we want to incentivize marriage, and do we want to incentivize kids being able to spend a little bit of time with their parents? And British citizens take to the streets as boats loaded with hundreds of illegal immigrants arrive on their shores. We have the news you need to know. A mid a highly competitive midterm election season and the Republican National Convention kicking off in Dallas tomorrow. President Trump is trying to press his influence in a consequential U.S. Senate race in Texas. A pack affiliated with the president is opening up its coffers to inject 10 million into the campaign of Ken Paxton, the Republican candidate and state attorney general. Joining us now to break it all down is Daily Wire opinion editor and host of the new show, The District Club, Ben Dominic. Ben, thanks for coming on. Great to be with you. So let's start with the RNC. You'll be there all week for this and the list of scheduled speakers was just released.

2:10First, what do you make of that? You know, I think that this is something that the president and his political team have been trying to make a real thing as opposed to just essentially a series of political speeches that you could hear on the floor of the U.S. Senate or the U.S. House on a day-to-day basis. They want to try to make it something that is truly like a midterm convention, something that we have not seen traditionally in American politics in the modern era. And I think that that's a signal that they understand that they're kind of starting off behind. There's been a lot of fraxis disagreement in the Republican Party in Washington, D.C. of late. But I think that what you're going to actually see is really a wall to wall series of Republicans who are going to come out. They are going to try to send their message nationally. We'll see how much it actually resonates and how much of it actually breaks through given that this is an event where you don't have a convention that's actually nominating someone.

3:12You just have essentially a gathering of these different politicians together to make the case that they should be sent back to Washington. Now you indicated that they're going into this kind of starting off as the underdog. What's the morale in the party as this thing is kicking off? Well, the thing is that this morale level in the Republican Party at the moment is actually pretty good considering where they were a couple of months ago. One aspect of this, of course, is a very positive jobs number that came out very much confidence in the economy, feeling like things are getting back on their solid footing, feeling like the situation in the straight-of-four moves has been resolved to a certain degree. So that makes for Republicans a situation that feels a lot more optimistic, a lot more hopeful than they perhaps had back in July. At the same time, they really haven't found a message until most recently with this idea that they're going to lead into democratic extremism across the board.

4:12Particularly, I think the Michigan Senate race is one that nationalized this conversation about the rise of the DSA. Whether that resonates with voters or not, though, that's a big question. It's going to require these politicians to kind of develop a new skill that they haven't shown to this point. A lot of these Republicans haven't made a solid case to be sent back to Washington. And they're going to be running in districts, many of them, that have been redrawn or adjusted just given the different redistricting battles that happened over the past year. That's going to be a new challenge for a lot of different members. The map has literally changed in so many states at this point. Last thing, a pack affiliated with the president just made a big investment in the Texas Senate race. You mentioned Michigan, the other major race, people watching Texas Senate race. Can you tell us what's going on there with that investment? Sure, it's a $10 million investment in an ad campaign that the president is rolling out. It's really the first expenditure that he's had. One of the big questions looming over this whole situation, one that we discussed on the district club, is that the president has an enormous amount of money, a huge war chest that he can turn to to try to back Republicans across the nation.

5:23So especially with these new rules that have been backed by the Supreme Court, it allows for more collaboration between parties and between entities like the president's super PACs that should make this spending more effective. But the real question that I have is whether it's going to just be spent on ad campaigns. You know, we saw it, Zoran Mamdani spend most of his money not on ads, but on influencer campaigns, ones that have now been exposed by the New York Times and by other entities for having ethical questions associated with them. But this is a situation where do the traditional methods of running tons of ads in a state like Texas, do they work? That's going to be put to the test. Ken Paxson as a candidate is certainly capable of winning the state. He's won it several times statewide, but he's up against a campaign that's raising a ton more money than he is and he needs the president's help to get across the finish line. Like we said at the top, could end up being a key week for Republicans here. Meanwhile, we'll be talking with you in the rest of the DW team at the RNC over the next few days.

Vance would reallocate federal child care subsidies to allow one parent within a married couple to stay home with the children.

8:32The money would come from an existing program, but the plan is causing internal debate within the GOP. Daily Wire Culture Reporter Megan Basham joins us now with the details. Megan News about this proposal broke a couple days ago, and immediately it sparked some pretty fierce debate before we get into the divide among Republicans. Can you first explain what this program currently is and then how Vance wants to change it? Yeah, Georgia. This proposal would change eligibility for the federal child care and development fund. Now, that's a program that was established back in 1996 at that time Republicans overwhelmingly voted for it. So right now it provides subsidies to low and income primarily single parents to pay for daycare while they work or get job training. Now, under Vance's proposal, which is very similar to one that then Senator Rubio floated back in 2024, a married couple could also qualify if one spouse works at least 35 hours a week while the other remains home, as John said, to care for their child.

9:40So that money would essentially help offset some of the income sacrificed by that stay at home parent. So this was what Daily Wire host Michael Knowles said about this proposal on Fox and Friends this weekend. We already have a fund that is supposed to help parents take care of their kids. There's no new spending here. There's no new bill that needs to be passed. The problem is the current system incentivizes single parenthood, and it's basically just a subsidy for corporate America that wants to keep women locked up at the widget factory. So as Michael said, this is not a new $12 billion program. This money has already been appropriated for federal child care assistance. The debate is simply over who's eligible to get it. Okay, so to set the table for that debate, then what are the current parameters of this program right now? So it currently pays for daycare for approximately 1.3 million children with benefits that are worth around $9,000. Now that's per child annually and families must earn less than 85% of their state's median income, although some states set lower limits.

10:49So about 80% of the roughly 900,000 families who are currently receiving these subsidies are headed by single working parents. So most of them are mothers. So Vance wants to add a new category of married couples who would compete for that same pool of money. And Vance actually talked about his goal of reforming this program with Charlie Kirk almost exactly a year ago. I think one of the things that we can do is make it easier for family models to choose or for families to choose whatever model they want, right? So one of the ways that you might be able to relieve a little bit of pressure on people who are paying so much for daycare is make it so that maybe like grandma grandpa wants to help out a little bit more. Now back in April, President Trump already rejected expansion of this program. So he said no to any more money going to it. So really again, this debate is centering on how to use the money, not whether to grow it. Now we already heard from Michael some of the pros, but I can imagine there are some cons, especially among Republicans.

11:50What did we hear from people who are opposed to this? Well, the program is going to expand the pool of families eligible for it. So some conservative commentators feel that this is going to train low income or moderate income married families to become dependent on government subsidies the way they feel that single parent households are. So others say that this is simply left wing social engineering coming from another direction. So they're calling to cut this program entirely, but other conservatives like heritage president Kevin Roberts are pointing out that Trump legally doesn't have the option of cutting the program and the GOP doesn't have the votes to dismantle it entirely. So Roberts feels that this is strategic use of existing funds to incentivize family formation rather than single parent households. Other conservative policy advocates have compared this to school choice programs. So if public money already follows a child into a daycare center and usually daycares are receiving these payments directly, they say parents should have some flexibility to choose home based care instead.

13:00Now at the same time, Democrats are also opposing this plan, but for a different reason, they say it's going to amount to a quote unquote raid on the funds by married parents, for example, the National Women's Law Center called it a quote unquote pro natalist effort that would punish single motherhood. Protesters have taken to the streets in the UK over boats of illegal immigrants arriving on their shores and authorities appearing to quickly move to house them.

14:06Joining us now to discuss is Bev Turner host of GB news late show live. Bev, great to have you back on. Good to see you, John. So we've talked a lot over the last few weeks about this mess in suda and how Spanish citizens are now taking to the streets and protest. Now we have these reports out of the UK about these boats with you know dozens of migrants, sometimes hundreds of migrants coming at once. First, how big is this issue and what is the government's response been so far? This issue is huge in the UK. It's been going on for years now. We have tens of thousands of legal migrants that turn up every year in the UK. Now the Labour government would say that we're doing a better job of turning boats back around the numbers are down. We actually have it seven years low in terms of the numbers of people arriving. But what happened this week, which is unprecedented, was the number of British men who turned out to say no enough. These are people who feel they're not listened to. They were dressed in black. They had balaclava on and it was honestly as a Brit. It was remarkable to see because it feels like this is the start of people rising up and saying no more.

15:12Now this Sunday, the city of Portsmouth made a lot of headlines and I think you're referencing this with the protests that spring up. Police amassing to confront the protesters. What exactly happened on the scene? Normally we see migrants arrive from France into Dover in Kent. It's been a very tried and tested route. It isn't particularly far, maybe 30 miles or so. What we saw over the weekend, which is the first time this has happened, is migrants arriving in Portsmouth. This just shows a change of approach from the people, traffickers and the migrants arriving. It's a much longer route. But they only have to go halfway because then guess what? The British border force go out in their lifeboats and pick these people up. Because once they're in the water, nobody will stop them. The French won't stop them once they're in the water. That is the rule of the French police. If a migrant has already in the water, the French police back off and they let them go. If they're in the water on our side, we go and we rescue them.

16:13This is what's making people absolutely furious. It's an incredibly safe route now. What we saw at the weekend was the first time that British men, predominantly men, but actually not all men, galvanized. They came together, they organized. The police didn't have any idea this was going to happen. That is a very unusual. Normally they would get an inkling via social media, maybe on a telegram chat or something. They didn't. So these men, we think probably a couple of hundred, maybe more turned up and they blocked the road. There's one road in and out of this particular area where this beach is. They lay on the road because guess what? There were three luxury coaches ready to pick up these migrants. All men. There was tents there. There was track suits provided, clean clothes. They were waiting for them. They were ready for them. So the idea that this was a surprise is clearly for the birds. I saw the video myself and actually thought, is this fake? It's definitely not fake. Like you said, luxury buses picking these migrants up. Does this issue show any signs of slowing down? Is there going to be a policy change here when it comes to these boats coming across in the water?

17:21The politicians who've spoken out about this have said that the acts of these people protesting was thuggery. There's no evidence of thuggery. There's no arrest. There was no violence. They were very much a peaceful protest, a sign of strength. The response from the politicians would suggest that nothing will change whatsoever. There was one family there of a young woman who was murdered. She was working in a migrant hotel and she was stabbed 27 times in the head by an illegal migrant. Her family were there on the day. Her sister and her mother. We are here to raise awareness that we have to stop these men coming over. They won't all be murderers. Some of them will be and we don't know who they are. We didn't know if they have terrorist intent, criminal intent. We just simply don't know who they are, John. So it means women and girls are incredibly vulnerable. The government at the moment are all they're doing is criticizing the protesters. They're not criticizing the system. Before we let you go, another immigration related story out of Europe. We had a major election in Germany over the weekend.

18:24That's really sparked a lot of concern from the left. Can you speak to the significance of that election? Europe were all watching the election in Germany because the German people in that particular state have voted for a party that is considered to be far right. Define that in 2026. What that basically means is no more migrants, secure borders. They will take migrants back to their country of origin. It's a statement by the people. Finally, thankfully, democracy working. Whether that movement goes across the whole of Europe remains to be seen. There is a French election next year. And of course the British won't be a million miles behind that as well. So let's see. This might be the start of a political right movement across the whole of Europe. Well, it's clear that immigration is really driving people to action whether that's to the polls or to protest like we've seen in the UK and Spain. Bev, thank you so much for coming on. Thank you.
