Well, a changing weather setup could favor the development of large storm systems capable
1:21
of spreading snow, ice, and rain from portions of the mountainous northwest into the plains
1:30
It is looking much more likely that a major storm with snow and ice will affect the
1:35
south-central part of the U.S. later this week with ice for the Appalachians and Atlantic
1:41
seaboard this weekend.
1:43
Through midweek, numerous shots of cold, Arctic air and rounds of snow will continue to impact
1:49
portions of the Midwest, the Great Lakes, and the Northeast states.
1:53
Frigid gusty winds blowing across the lakes will promote more rounds of lake effect snow.
1:59
Visibility could be sharply reduced in heavy bands of snow with travel becoming hazardous
2:06
AccuWeather forecasters warn that the cold conditions that have set in across the Midwest and the
2:11
Northeast will stick around for the foreseeable future.
2:16
AccuWeather's Peyton Simmers said that cold air will still be in place this weekend and
2:21
there is a signal that there can be a storm during that period, which could help to usher
2:26
snow across the eastern U.S.
2:29
As the cold lingers and even strengthens as the week progresses, the threat of frostbite
2:34
and hypothermium will grow for anyone spending significant time outdoors.
2:39
The sustained Arctic chill will also result in increased heating and energy usage across
2:44
roughly a third of the nation.
2:46
From Friday into the weekend, a far-reaching storm is expected to gradually swing out
2:52
of the Rocky Mountains and into the plains before barreling across the eastern U.S.
2:57
Given the cold air that will be in place across the region, wintery impacts are likely
3:02
across a large swath of the storm track.
3:05
Exactly where this storm sets up and tracks will determine whether snow and ice will be.
3:11
From Colorado and Wyoming through the mid-Atlantic and New England coasts are urged to stay
3:16
on alert for forecast updates, especially with the threat of ice becoming a possibility.
3:22
AccuWeather's Alex Susnellsky said that the ingredients are coming into place for a long
3:27
duration storm that brings a substantial amount of snow, sleet and freezing rain from
3:32
Texas and southern portions of the plains to the lower and middle parts of the Mississippi
3:37
Valley later this week and then into the east this weekend.
3:42
There is the potential for snow and ice to reach deep into the heart of Texas and along
3:47
the interstate 10 and 20 corridors farther to the east and the central states and then farther
3:54
north along the I-81 and 95 corridors.
3:58
Given the magnitude of the cold air that follows the storm, many areas in the southern states
4:04
could struggle with an icy grip of winter with some damage to infrastructure and major
4:09
travel difficulties.
4:11
The scope of which will be revealed in the coming days as more details of the storm unfold.
4:17
As a notable dip of the jet stream pattern becomes more enhanced over the coming weeks,
4:23
it will help reinforce the cold air filtering southward from Canada.
4:28
Perhaps the most substantial expanse of cold air for the entire winter will develop later
4:33
this week and this weekend surrounding the storm.
4:37
Even in the February, AccuWeather long-range forecasters are concerned that the temperature
4:42
trend will remain below typical for this time of year for a large part of the nation.
4:48
Joe Lundberg said that AccuWeather's long-range forecast for February calls for below average
4:54
temperatures across much of the eastern two-thirds of the nation with the biggest departures
4:59
from normal in the Midwest.
5:02
For areas west of the Rockies, above historical average temperatures are in store with the
5:08
greatest departures in the southwest.
5:11
Also, sad news coming out of Australia as a 12-year-old boy is in critical condition following
5:19
a shark attack off Sydney's coast.
5:22
Emergency services were called to hermitage for sure walk near Shark Beach Sunday afternoon
5:28
in response to reports that a boy had been bitten by a shark.
5:32
The boy was rescued from the ocean by Marine Area Command in eastern suburbs police.
5:37
Two medical tourniquets were used on the boy as they applied first aid for what police
5:41
called serious leg injuries before he was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
5:48
Authorities believe it was possibly a bull shark that attacked the boy.
