On today’s episode, Jason discusses a chaotic first day of the NFL Free Agency period, including: what the plan is in Miami after the Dolphins dumped Tua Tagovailoa (and his $99m dead cap hit) in exchange for Malik Willis, what makes the Carolina Panthers the quiet winners of Day One, why football fans are really overreacting to the Kansas City Chiefs' acquisition of Kenneth Walker III, what the addition of Mike Evans means for the San Francisco 49ers moving forward, and why the Indianapolis Colts are wise not to give in to Daniel Jones' unrealistic salary demands.

This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
What is a trick by our fam?
It's me, Jason McIntyre, straight.
Boyer for Tuesday, March the 10th.
I know everybody's locked in on March,
but oh my gosh, this is going to be an NFL podcast.
I cannot believe which has happened on Monday and free agency.
Obviously March madness, you know, I love it.
It's one month out of the year.
It's less than that.
It's really like 11 days, right?
When you felt count the first couple of weekends.
But today's Slate of College basketball starts 9.30 AM.
He has 9.30 Baylor Arizona State in the big 12.
I mean, there's games all day.
I'm sorry, actually at 11, yeah.
And then at 11, Pittsburgh, Sanford, Sanford, Sanford has a pro.
Or maybe a first round pick.
And you got the big 12.
I mean, it really, the fun begins on Tuesday.
There is a lot of gains.
And then Wednesday and Thursday, there's a million games.
It's so fun.
I love it.
And you guys know I'm a hoop head.
Got a big men's league game tonight.
Give me 30 second vet here.
I know you don't care.
So we're in first place for the last like four weeks.
We beat the defending champs and the regular season finale.
We were missing our big.
They were missing their best guy.
And we're feeling great.
We get to buy semi-finals tonight.
And all of a sudden, guys are like dropping like flies.
And I'm just sitting here like guys.
It's all about the playoffs.
You got a show for the playoffs.
So I don't think we're going to pull it off.
And you know, I'm in another league.
And we have also semi-final game, same situation.
Now, this one's a little different.
He's got to work thing.
He doesn't know if he can get out of.
But oh, man, it's just painful, bro.
Anyways, nobody cares about that.
What you care about is SGA step back three
over Spencer Jones for the Thunder win over the Nuggets.
Actually, pretty good game.
Ludorck got got a little goony there at the end.
Clobbering Jokits.
And then OK, see kind of melting down.
But so many guys were missing from that game.
I think Caruso was out, Chet, J. Dub, Aaron Gordon's first
game back.
I don't put too much stock in any of it.
It was just a great shop by SGA.
But this podcast is going to be all about the NFL,
because so much happened.
It was wild.
Like historically, NFL free agency has not matter.
But I think what changed the game.
You guys remember two years ago, the Eagles had a really good free
agency.
They added, say, Quan Barkley and they won the Super Bowl.
And I was like, oh, well, then maybe free
agency isn't a joke.
The old adage was you can't win the Super Bowl in March, which
is one free agency is, right?
That used to be it.
Then the Eagles did that.
Last year, you know who spent the most money.
Oh, yeah, New England Patriots, where they end up in the Super Bowl.
Didn't win it, but they got there.
And it was a bit of a surprise.
So I wonder if the recent calculations,
hey, teams are getting smarter.
There's way more data, way more information out there.
Perhaps teams are saying, you know what,
if we spend wisely in free agency, maybe we can make a run.
Now, it's early, very early.
And I'm not going to start with these teams,
but the teams that are spending the most, it's early,
but we're not done.
There's going to be more stuff happening all day
and probably the rest of the week.
Tennessee Titans and the Raiders seem to be early
on spending the most money.
But I'm not going to start there.
I want to start with the Miami Dolphins.
I thought, and a lot of people piggybacked off this,
that they were tanking.
Once they start shedding guys, they start dumping, you know,
Tyree Kill, let's dump Chubb.
Yesterday, they traded, what's it?
Mink of its Patrick to the Jets.
And it's like, everybody's moving off, guys.
And the dolphins want to contend by going for the bottom.
And they want to contend for archmaning.
It seemed like that was the vibe.
And then seemingly out of nowhere,
the Miami Dolphins decide,
we're going to go get our guy, Malik Willis.
Now, usually when people make predictions,
they're way off, especially for like a Malik Willis.
But there were some breadcrumbs.
The new head coach came from Green Bay.
Defensive coordinator, but he was able to see Willis
in practice all the day, knows his work habits,
knows the effort he puts in,
don't know what kind of guy he is.
And the GM also came from Green Bay.
So very familiar with Willis.
Now, initially they didn't have the money.
So what do you do if you want something
and you don't have the money?
You just start selling everything, not nailed down.
And now suddenly, boom, the Miami Dolphins come out with,
again, I think this is a bit of a surprise.
They grab Malik Willis, three years,
67 and a half million.
I'm not going to make you do the math.
Essentially 45 million guaranteed boils down
to a two year deal for 45 mill.
Cut 45 and a half, Malik Willis got 22 and a half million
per year.
Remember the nonsense about 30 mill, 35 mill,
remember that crap?
That was agents feeding reporters nonsense.
That was never going to happen.
Essentially he got slightly more than just in fields
got with the jets.
Now, I don't know how good Malik Willis is.
I don't think anybody can know how good he will be.
This is what we know.
He threw 35 passes last year, guys.
That's it.
If you could make a judgment on 35 passes in an offense
led by one of the sharper offensive minds in the league,
probably top 10 offensive mind right in the floor as a coach.
On a pretty good unit with guys like Christian Watson,
dobs, they had the great tight end Tyler Kraft
before he went down, or sorry, Tucker Kraft, Josh Jacobs.
I mean, they had a great offense.
And when he came in in limited playing time,
he did well the year prior through 54 passes.
Got two wins.
So Malik Willis, guys, in four years in the NFL,
two in Tennessee, two in Green Bay,
has thrown 155 passes.
That's insane.
That's like five games worth of passes.
That's it.
That's why he couldn't come in top dollar.
He just can't.
I mean, again, could he gain managers weight
to doing well with the Packers in limited action?
Yeah, coming off the bench.
He's top three back up in the league.
As a starter, I don't friggin' know, guys.
I just don't.
It doesn't make sense to me that you'd pay him 30, 35.
I think the dolphins got a great deal.
I have outstanding deal for the Miami dolphins.
Here's the question though.
Where are you going with them?
What's around him that makes you excited about?
So right now, the offensive line, a lot of questions, right?
Devon H and we like.
Jalen, why don't we like?
The rest of the wide receiver room
has someone named Theo Wies, Jr.
D. S. Courage, Cedric Wilson, Jr.
and Malik Washington.
Tight end room, Darren Waller, Greg Dulitch, Julian Hill,
and offensive line is not worth writing home about.
It's, it's unproven.
I don't know what the Miami strategy is.
Is Willis gonna get you enough to get you
out of the running for a top three pick?
He might.
Jets don't have a quarterback yet.
And as I record this late Monday night, it looks like,
I mean, the Jets honestly, guys,
they're talking about like Spencer Ratler
and Andy Darnold, stuff like that.
Okay.
Malik Willis is better than those guys.
I think we can agree.
But the bottom line is, I don't know what the game plan is
for the dolphins.
Are they cleaning up their books?
Well, I don't know.
Maybe they now absorb the largest dead cap hit in NFL history
for two $99.2 million.
That is a lot.
Reminds me of the great line from Moneyball
where Brad Pitt, aka Billy Bean in the movie,
tells David Justice, oh no.
This is how much the Yankees think of you.
They're paying you to play for us.
They don't want you on their team.
They're paying you to play for us.
Two of course, then goes and signs in Atlanta.
Quick story on that in a second.
For the minimum, 1.2 mil.

So essentially, the Miami Dolphin said, we would rather,
so their quarterback room, they're paying quinoaers,
Zach Wilson, I don't know what's going to happen with him.
Maybe he's the third guy.
And two, all those guys on the books, that is a metric ton of money,
sunk into quarterback.
So if they want to give the appearance of, um,
tanking while starting Malik Willis, go for it.
I don't know what that's going to get you.
They have three good players in Malik Willis, HN, and Waddle.
After that, I have no clue.
But the funny story about twoa.
So early Monday morning, like, I think one of the first things
I saw when I woke up was, twoa is talking,
or I don't know how to shift her and all these guys framed it,
but they all had the same thing, basically.
Twoa is taught in talks with the Atlanta Falcons.
You guys know what that means.
You don't leak talks if it's going your way.
You want to keep that quiet, get the deal done, sign,
make your money.
Obviously, twoa's agent was trying to get more than the minimum,
trying to get a bidding more started.
So they float this to the reporters,
hey, twoa's talking to Miami.
And essentially, the rest of the league shrugged their shoulders.
It was like, great, have fun.
Or sorry, twoa's talking to Atlanta.
And the rest of the league collectively just was like,
eh, meh, don't care.
And so twoa ends up signing for the minimum in Atlanta.
They announced it later on Monday.
That's how the game is played.
That's how your sausage is made.
When players aren't getting the deal they want,
their agent floats it in hopes of getting a bidding war,
getting other people to say, oh, wow,
this is just a hundred to this.
Oh, you know, Daniel Jones, that's how the game is played.
And obviously, you know, twoa just didn't really have a market.
So twoa goes to Atlanta.
No battle, Michael Penex, one Penex is healthy.
I unfortunately, I saw some not nice jokes about the quarterback room in Atlanta,
you know, obviously twoa with concussions.
And Penex with like, I don't know, he's had like five searchers on his knees.
It's not great.
But actually, I don't even think Atlanta, you know,
I love to back Atlanta in that division like an idiot.
They kick in my teeth every year.
I think you've got to go to Carolina, believe it or not,
the Carolina Panthers, folks, big, freaking winners.
I'm not even capping.
Hold up.
They got two high impact starters on defense.
Devon Lloyd, who was an all pro linebacker last year.
Now, did you buy at the top of the market?
Probably.
He was unbelievable, had to pick six against my homes on Monday night football
that really made his year.
But he got 25 mil guaranteed.
And then Jalen Phillips, the eddresser from Philly, they stole him.
So you're just plugging into, you know,
an all pro and a high end guy in Phillips.
Now, Phillips is interesting because he's never had double digit sacks.
He's active.
He's disruptive, but he also had the Achilles, he had the ACL.
So he's had some injuries.
If he could say healthy and he was last year, you know,
that there's something there.
But I think the Panthers, remember,
their offense was cooking.
They lit up the Rams twice.
I think the Panthers are the team to beat in that division.
That would be my, my only takeaway from that awful division.
Now, let's start talking about good teams.
I think way too much is being made
of the Kansas City Chiefs A, signing Kenneth Walker
to the most money guaranteed ever
for a running back in free agency.
I think way too much is being made of that, guys.
I mean, sure, it enables defenses to not stack the box
and against the Chiefs.
Because hope that, you know, we could still got my homes
would beat you over the top.
And so you got to go lighter boxes and Walker
can have a, can kind of sort of cook.
Interestingly, I don't know what made me dig into this.
So Walker played a lot his first year,
a little, also second year, then last year he was hurt.
And then this past season was his biggest one.
So he had 221 carries, 65 in the postseason
because sharpening was hurt, 40 catches total,
326 touches, most of his career by a significant amount.
Okay, one of the reasons,
I don't, I'm not trying to hype myself
as a fantasy football guy.
But I correctly nailed Sequan two years ago
going to the Eagles and correctly nailed Christian
McCaffrey this past season with the Niners.
They were coming off light seasons in terms of carries.
Now I'm pretty sure they were both coming off injuries,
giants, Sequan and Seemack as well.
I'm telling you now, I'm not touching Seemack
next year in fantasy.
If you guys see the usage he had, it was off the charts.
Bouncing back from that at his age,
I just don't see it happening.
We'll get to the Mike Evans thing in a second.
But essentially the chief sign Kenneth Walker,
everybody's all geeked, I get it, okay, sure.
So I guess that means you're not taking Jeremiah love,
you don't need him at nine.
And then Travis Kelsey's back,
which is I think a surprise.
But everybody's acting like,
oh, the all pro Travis Kelsey's back guys,
take a look at his fricking numbers.
Go look at Travis Kelsey's numbers the last five years.
Totally declining in every category,
targets, receptions, touchdowns.
I'm sorry, he's a depreciating asset.
Is he a Hall of Famer?
Yeah, is he a top seven tight end in the history of the poor?
Certainly, top five, maybe, I don't know.
But I'm saying right now,
is Travis Kelsey really gonna help you next year?
Like I'm sure he's a great to have him
as a locker room leader, he didn't want to go out,
missing the playoffs.
I mean Kenneth Walker and Travis Kelsey returning.
Well, this is it.
And oh, by the way, the wide receiver room,
they traded McDuffie.
And then they lose Jalen Watson.
Both of those guys go into the ramps.
Now, I will defend the chiefs a little bit here.
They famously Brett Vich, the GM,
has never signed a chief's cornerback that they drafted
to a second contract.
Ligeria Sneed, Charvary's Ward,
now McDuffie and now Watson.
He just doesn't believe in that.
He I guess he feels you could just go out
and grab cornerbacks, our scouts are awesome.
We get good cornerbacks and we plug them in
and they're effective.
Okay, you're now replacing both starting cornerbacks.
Geez.
I mean, hey, maybe Kenneth Walker is amazing.
It's possible that Travis Kelsey recaptures his old form.
You know, he's a married guy now.
He's living in the gym in the off season instead of vacationing
and Kelsey returns to all profile.
That's possible.
And they're good.
I saw they resigned type one Thornton.
You know, they got Richie Rice.
They've just telling you guys,
I still need to see a lot from the chiefs.
I actually think the chargers had been having
a great off season.
I don't make this make sense, folks.
So the GM of the chargers drafted Charlie Colar,
tight ended out of Iowa State when the GM was in Baltimore.
So now Colar, who was a third string tight end
behind Andrews and likely, mostly a blocker.
Becomes a free agent.
These are his stats from last year.
And that reminder, he's a blocking tight end.
So obviously he's not going to pad the stats.
10 catches, 142 yards, two touchdowns.
For the season.
I mean, that's like Cal pits against the bucks.
He got $17 million guaranteed.
Are you kidding me?
Is that an overpay?
I don't understand that at all.
So they did lose Will Disley.
They've got Gadsden who look good.
They must know something about Charlie Colar
that nobody else does.
Maybe he could be a sixth offensive lineman.
Essentially, he's that good of a blocker.
We'll find out.
And they got Alex Engel, the fullback from Miami.
He reunites with Mike McDaniel.
And they got a guard from Miami, Cole Strange.
So essentially they're loading up.
Now I did see it, don't love this.
The chargers dumped McKay Bechton
and they lost Zion Johnson.
So they lose both guards and their center retired.
So they're replacing the entire interior offensive line.
Now they got Tyler Biazzi, I can't say his name.
He was a Washington and Dallas.
He's fine.
Okay.
And then you get one guard in Cole Strange
and then you got to find another guard, probably in the draft.
I don't know guys.
Offensive line, just get the chargers
ever figure the damn thing out.
I don't have the answer to that.
I'm not going to do Seattle
because they are hemorrhaging players at this point.
I think they've lost four, five or six starters.
It's not a thousand percent clear to me.
Obviously, and they lost their offensive coordinator,
which is huge.
I mean, not a hot take.
I don't see them repeating next year.
The tight end room is back.
The resigned Rashid Shaheed, which is good.
Looks like Cooper Cup is staying.
I believe they will have one new offensive line.
And I'm not certain because again,
everything's moving and fluid.
They definitely lost the safety.
They lost Boi Mafe, the Ed Drusher.
They lost a linebacker and were TBD on Tyreek Wolen
and who didn't end up being a starter at the end of the year.
But essentially, they've lost a lot of guys.
And they're OC.
Yeah.
Let's go to the Niners who signed Mike Evans.
So everybody's freaking out.
Oh my gosh, Mike Evans, are you really paying that much money
for an old wide receiver?
Mike Evans, yeah, he had a great career.
But what do you do in Niners?
Well, I mean, Mike Evans is 32.
He's gonna be 33 in August.
Mike Evans got three years, 42.4 mil,
but only 16.3 million guaranteed.
So essentially, you could argue this is a one year,
$16 million deal.
I don't hate that.
I mean, Mike Evans probably gonna replace Jennings
and we know Ayukh, they hate him, he's gone.
Guy didn't show up, took the bag, literally ran
and never showed up again.
So now you've got Evans, the guy who got shot.
I'm spacing on his name.
Obviously, Kiddles coming off a major injury.
I don't know what to do with the Niners next year.
I'm nervous about CMAC.
Oh, it's Ricky Peersol, it's the guy who got shot.
Kiddles obviously coming off a major injury.
Trent Williams is old.
I kind of sort of feels like a last Rob maybe.
I saw they had the most travel yard miles
in the history of the NFL that we go to Mexico
and Australia.
So tough one for the Niners.
What other notes do I have here?
Oh, this is kind of more funny than anything,
but you know I bullish on the Titans.
Now I was a little early on them this past year.
Remember, I wasn't wrong.
I was just early, sometimes a year early.
It cost me in some futures.
Robert Salah, head coach, Brian Dable, OC.
And then they go out and they get one Dale Robinson
who thrived in Brian Dable's offense,
especially when neighbors went down.
One Dale Robinson looked pretty damn good last year.
Anybody who plays fantasy definitely picked him up
because he was cooking for like the last half of the season.
So I guess he's your two in Tennessee.
Io Minor, the wide receiver from Stanford.
Probably there are three.
Maybe one Dale goes to the slot.
Io Minor outside.
I don't know Calvin Ridley's doesn't sound like he's long
there.
I would not be shocked if they went carnal tape at four.
The wide receiver from Ohio State.
I think they'll have that in my next mock.
But they also went and got a former Robert Salah guy
in Franklin Myers from Denver.
Play inside it out.
Remember Salah got one of his other guys,
Germaine Johnson from the Jets.
So Salah is going to get his guys.
Brian Dable's going to get his guys
and there's kind of joining forces in Tennessee.
I think that's fun.
And again, you work with,
this is not that different from work, right?
You work with somebody and then you get a new job
and you're hiring a team and you go hire them.
My brother deals with this all the time in his
pharmaceutical sales gig.
And this works in sports television.
You know, you work with producers,
then you get a show and you bring those producers
like this, this is pretty standard operating procedure.
And obviously if you work with this coach,
this closely and you have success
and you think they're good,
you want to go play for them.
There is an inverse which you may like.

So I was surprised that the Colts traded Michael Pittman.
It came on the heels.
The Colts are a bit of a mess.
And listen, I don't want to be too harsh on the Colts
because at some point, you've got to applaud teams for swinging.
They went all in last year, going after Sawaskardner.
They were hot, and then all fell apart.
Daniel Jones gets hurt.
The team craters.
And they miss the playoffs.
They decide, you know what, the coach and the GM did a good job.
We're going to back.
And so now they have a decision to make with Daniel Jones.
And according to some reports and incredible people,
this isn't like fly-by-night garbage.
The Colts essentially presented.
They had the tag situation, right?
They could do the franchise tag or the transition tag.
Transition tag is, hey, you can go out and get another offer.
If you do, great.
More power to you, take that offer, you can bounce.
So the Colts' plan, I think, had been to franchise tag
pierce the wide receiver.
And they would offer Daniel Jones a contract.
He would sign it, and then they're great.
So according to reports, the Colts said, hey, DJ,
three years, 100 million, you know, we'll give you,
I don't know, 50 million guarantee, whatever the number is.
Daniel Jones, who remember drove a hard bargain with the Giants?
Daniel Jones came back to them and said, I want 50 million a year.
And at that point, the Colts are like, bro,
you're coming on off on a kill-ease.
We like you, but come on, that's insane.
So what happened?
Transition tag.
Daniel Jones now has permission to go try to get his 50 million
on the market.
He ain't going to sniff that.
So now you use the transition tag,
you can't franchise tag pierce.
So you got to pay him.
And they overpay pierce, slight overpay, 416 million.
4 years, 160 million.
And listen, he's good, but I don't.
I mean, he's getting like $28 million a year, guys.
Again, more power to him.
You know, he was a contested catch legend last year,
Deep Ball Maven.
I was digging into the yards per route run.
And he was great against zone.
Just great.
He was good against man, not great, good.
And now there's no pitman underneath.
Now maybe you can find a pitman.
I thought pitman was a really good receiver,
which brings us to pitman.
So anyways, the Colts are kind of up the creek, right?
So now they've got a quarterback who wants a lot of money.
He got transition tagged.
They've got soft gardener.
They've got pierce who they overpaid.
They got Jonathan Taylor, Tyler Warren.
Like they got a good team.
I don't mind, I think they enter the season
third in the division, right?
They're not better than the Texans.
And the Jags, even though they lost ETN and Lloyd,
Jags are so better.
So that's a tough one for the Colts.
I would not be surprised if they finished in the seller.
Tennessee Titans, like I just said,
arrow pointing up for them.
Anyways, so to Michael Pitman.
So last year, Pitman had a good year.
Not a great year.
He's good.
I mean, I get, is he a top 10 receiving league guy?
Fringe-ish.
I like him.
The guy's good.
But his season last year, if you look at the numbers,
you're like, this is a top 10 receiver, J-Mac?
On what planet?
He had 80 catches for 784 yards, seven touchdowns.
Drill down a little deeper, guys.
Are you ready for this?
How many 100 yard games in Michael Pitman have last year?
I'll spoil it for you.
He had one.
It just so happened to come against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
He had nine catches on 12 targets for a buck 15
in that loss to Pittsburgh.
They could not guard him.
So what do you do?
You go out and you trade for him.
And now you got Michael Pitman opposite DK Metcalf,
which is actually, I don't hate that at all,
DK Metcalf stretches the field like Pierce did
and Michael Pitman's kind of your underneath guy.
That's not bad, right?
You're running back room.
You got better.
You got Rico Dowdoll to join with Jalen Warren,
kind of a Dowdoll a bit of a Thumper Warren,
kind of a do-it-all guy.
They lose Kenneth Gainwell.
And the wide receiver pairing, Metcalf Pitman solid,
Friar Mooth at tight end, Darnel Washington,
a big kid from Georgia.
It's like, oh wow, something here.
And then you look at the quarterback situation
and Aaron Rogers is currently in parts unknown
and it's going to be either Duck Rudolph or Will Howard.
Now maybe this gives them an opportunity to say,
hey, Aaron, we're going to play some hardball with you.
We don't have a lot of money, but we got a great team.
You want to come play with us?
Or you want to go out with your last pass being a pick six?
If not, fine.
We'll just pop Will Howard in there, we'll be fine.
Because Will Howard's going to have some dudes to throw to
and a couple good running backs.
And I'm not going to lie, the Dowdoll Warren pairing is good
and Metcalf Pitman is good as well.
Now on defense, we'll see.
Didn't love the defense last year.
TJ Watt getting old,
defense of line, not that impressive.
I still don't know how they made the playoffs
other than that lucky ending to the season against the Ravens.
But I don't know what to make the Steelers quarterback
will be big for them.
So I think we covered most of the chaos.
Cowboys a stupid trade for Roshan Gary.
I don't know what they were thinking there.
That was Roshan Gary essentially went online and posted,
yeah, it was a great run in Green Bay.
Thank you. I'm out.
And what did like, everybody's like, whoa,
I guess they're cutting Roshan Gary within like 20 minutes.
They had he had to take it down.
And then what do you know, like a day or two later,
the Cowboys trade for a guy who was going to get cut.
I mean, it's just embarrassing stuff embarrassing.
They give up a fourth round pick for a guy who was going to get cut.
I mean, come on.
This is this is Dallas.
I mean, Jerry Jones just he doesn't get it.
Um, we'll talk to Rob G about the Raiders.
They did a lot. They overpaid Linderbaum highest contract for a center in NFL history.
I don't think it's a worst deal in the world because your quarterbacks on the rookie deal
and you want your quarterback to start with one of the best in the sport.
And he's got that at center.
They got a couple good defenders.
They're shopping in the SEC with quite Walker and the Kobe Dean.
Um, they picked up a couple corners.
Tehran Johnson, Eric Stokes for the top 67 picks.
I'm not saying they're going to make a Patriots type leap.
But there's a world where this team wins.
I got to see the schedule, but like eight games.
Is that crazy?
I like Mendoza, but if they win seven or eight games, I would not be shocked.
But you know what that means.
That means either the Broncos or the chargers or the chiefs.
They're not delivering like everybody thinks they are.
So that division's tough.
Both Western divisions, very, very tough.
Right.
That's it for a jam pack Tuesday.
For your back tomorrow, probably back to college basketball tomorrow.
But we'll see.
We'll see.
Talk to you then.
