This is Straight Fire with Jason McIntyre.
What is up, Straight Fire? Bam!
It's me, Jason McIntyre, straight.
Boyer for Friday, March the 6th, programming note.
Your boy's hosted the herd today.
It's only one hour though.
There's a lot of world baseball classic happening.
So only a one hour show.
Should be a fun one.
A lot of Lakers talk.
Yes, a lot of spurs talk.
How about the spurs beat down to the piston spurs?
Best team in the late guys.
Come on, before being real.
And then the big news.
Jason Tatum returns tonight.
How about that?
Fired up for Tatum coming back a little nervous for him.
But to celebrate, we have a great guest on
Power Agent Lee Steinberg.
Currently reps Patrick Bahomes.
He was basically the role of Jerry McGuire.
Was modeled after Lee Steinberg.
So just some interesting insight from a legend.
He's now, I believe 76 years old.
He's got a new book coming out.
I think you'll like the discussion.
Should be a good weekend to college basketball.
Some good games, Duke UNC.
We'll see about that.
College basketball went pretty good last night.
I think it was two and one.
Maybe three and one I forgot.
But yeah, I'm firing.
The picks that don't go on the site.
Just smaller stuff goes on Instagram.
So yeah, Lyndon Wood covered.
Lyndon Wood first half, airfield.
Yeah, three and one.
So back to back three and one.
So hope you guys are happy because yes, the peanut gallery
does pipe up when your boy has an off night or two or three.
And it's going to happen.
You're going to have good nights.
You're going to have bad nights.
Boot and rally, baby.
Anyways, without further ado, let's get to our guest, Lee Steinberg.
Big time sports agent.
You know a guy Jason likes to think he knows everything
when it comes to sports.
I know what sports fans want.
But for everything he doesn't, he knows a guy who does.
Let's just say I know a guy who knows a guy who knows another guy.
All right, let's welcome back to straight fire.
One of the biggest names in the agent industry.
He's been at it for 52 years.
He was the inspiration for Jerry McGuire.
He reps Patrick Mahomes, Lee Steinberg, the powerful agent.
Lee, how are you, man?
Doing great yourself.
I'm excellent.
I cannot complain.
The NFL combine is done.
Free agency is on the horizon.
A lot of moves happening around the league.
I was wondering if you could just, we'll start with the easy zoom out.
And, you know, obviously NIL has changed the college game.
And now you got a lot of guys coming into the draft
who actually made decent money in college.
So maybe stayed longer than they should have.
I'm just wondering, how much have you seen the game change, Lee,
here over the last 10, 15 years?
Frankly, there have been three fundamental changes
that relate to college and pro football
that also, forever, what we understood to be the principal.
The first is NIL.
So now you have someone at age 15 thinking about talking to marketing directors.
And they're already doing marketing in high school.
And then high school in college, it's become a
wild, wild west of different colleges offering huge packages to recruit.
And then there's an influencer portal, which is another bite of the apple.
If you combine that with gambling,
and which I think is an existential threat to sports
and conference realignment, very little is the same.
And then the pros, you have the biggest one-year increase in cap money.
Which is going to produce explosive contracts, both for trustees
and for this upcoming group of three agents.
And then every team is trying to get under the cap before March 11th.
And so we're seeing a bunch of re-structured contracts at free-up cap room.
Yeah, I saw it's your, well, I think the, some of the teams are restructured.
I think the Cowboys are number one.
They've had like three guys, including Dak Prescott restructure,
the chiefs, your client, my home's restructured.
What was interesting, I noticed is that so everybody goes to the combine,
not all the coaches and GMs, but all the scouts for sure.
They talk to the players, they get the land of the land.
And we come back from the combine and boom,
the Rams make a huge play for Trent McDuffie.
And then the next day, boom, we got the Bears moving on from DJ Moore.
I wonder Lee is part of the reason the trades went down
because people went to the combine saying,
we need this, can we get this?
And then they look at the players, they interview them.
And I think, I don't know that he's going to be the impact guy we think.
Or is it just confirmation bias?
Talk to me about that process.
Well, I think that some of what you say has validity,
but they also are looking at their cap and trying to figure out
how to make improvements, knowing that that's the restructure certain players.
And then what goes into that mix is,
can we add a better and through trade before the beginning of the week here?
So that presses the timing also.

On the agent front, I try to tell my kids,
I got, you know, young kids, both now teenagers.
You know, it's not, it's not what, you know, sometimes it's who, you know,
and when I was researching you, I saw when you were at Berkeley,
you were like a resident advisor,
and on your floor was a future NFL quarterback in Steve Barkowski
and the co-founder of Apple in Steve Wozniak.
I mean, I don't know, obviously you're a people person.
You make a wheeling and dealing for decades.
Can you just talk about, is that like a soft skill you can acquire,
or is it just innate?
Just getting to know people and chatty.
I think the most important skill in life,
business, relationships is listening skills.
So if you can draw another person out
and get below their surface responses,
so you really understand what their deepest anxiety,
some fears are and greatest hopes and dreams,
it allows you to bond with people.
And so people always think it's ways and how you talk.
But a lot of it is how you listen and probe
and cut below the surface and peel back the layers of the onion.
And, well, Steve Barkowski was not only a fortuitous
in moving into my door, but he ended up the first pick
in the first round in 1975 draft
and asked me to represent them and here we are 50 years later.
Unbelievable.
Also, you got a new book coming out called The Comeback.
And it's an interesting tale.
Obviously, everybody loves your connection with Jerry McGuire
and the movie, which was just iconic.
The title is a playbook for turning life setbacks into victories.
I'm assuming everybody wanted you to write a book
because you're a legend.
But was this a tough one for you
or kind of an easy one given your history?
No, it was tough because I had struggled with that
called 20 years ago.
And I thought everyone in life comes up again setbacks.
Everybody comes up whether it's a marital, romantic,
whether it's money and finances, whether it's health,
whether it's addiction.
And so inevitably something comes along and upsets
the apple cart and then the question is, what do you do then?
And so in The Comeback, I tell about my own story
and recovery from alcoholism.
But I also lay out stories from Patrick Mahomes
and Steve Young and Troy Ackman and Warren Moon
and give people a sense of some of what,
maybe they didn't know where these people's lives
are overturned and how they cope with it.
Yeah, I do like the Steve Young stuff you mentioned
in the book.
People forget like obviously Steve Young
was a great college quarterback, ended up in the Hall of Fame.
But he was buried behind Joe Montana for years
and the idea that in the current era,
nobody sits behind anyone.
You want to get out and you want to star
whether it's in college or the pros.
Any lessons you could glean from that Steve Young story?
I think that in his case it was a religious faith
that helps sustain him and go into law school and be why you.
So he had something to occupy him in the off season.
But here he is in San Francisco behind Joe Montana
and the very fact he came there resurrected Montana's career
because he was supposed to retire
because of a bad back.
Well, that was obviously overstated.
But having that young next best quarterback behind him
fired him up.
So there was a period of time where
Steve was the fifth highest paid player in the league
and the back of Joe Montana.
And he would have started for virtually
any team else in the league.
But he felt there was something unique
about the San Francisco structure and offense
where he should weigh it out.
But that was for some frustrating years.
I can only imagine looking at the landscape right now
where we're seeing an interesting thing happen in the NFL
where guys got their chance.
The first round picks the quarterback.
Then they got extended.
They got an even longer chance.
And if you didn't, if it didn't pan out, they're moving on.
It's just too big of a cat, but Kyler Murray,
a guy you've worked with to a tongue of Iloa.
I'm just curious.
Do you think this is any different than he used to be?
Are they getting a longer leash?
A shorter one teams don't seem content now to be in the mix.
Like, you know, two has been in the playoffs twice.
People forget that just because he was hurt.
He missed one of them, but like it used to be.
Hey, if you're seven, seven and nine, seven and 10,
that's not the end of the world.
Now if you're not delivering instantly, it feels like you're gone.
It is to come more and more critical to have a franchise
quarterback to have any chance of getting through the playoffs
into the Super Bowl.
And if a team doesn't have one, and then the question is,
one of you throwing good time after bad.
And it is amazing, given what you talked about
with the massive scouting system, that about half of the quarter
packs drafted at the top of the first round,
either other performer don't make it.
Part of that situation so that it was really important
in the home's career that he went to a place with a,
where Alex Smith was a great mentor, where he had Andy Reed,
where he was with a good organization.
So some of this is situational because he looked at what,
what happens with a Baker Mayfield where you look at Sam
and Arnold, these quarterbacks flourish
because football is a systemic game.
And let's say in baseball, you can hit the ball on Yankee
Save, you can probably hit an advantage stadium.
But you might be a great quarterback for the Rams
and very poor for the New York Giants.

I want to talk about one of your former clients.
I don't know if you still have Ben Rothisberger,
but in his post career, obviously you have options
as a former star quarterback, right?
You could go into media.
You could start a podcast, which is new and didn't exist.
I don't know, 10 years ago.
Ben has kind of branded himself as like the Pittsburgh Steelers,
not insider, but he is talking a lot about his former organization
for better or for worse.
And it seems like it's divided some former players.
I guess there's like a code.
Hey, man, don't go against the franchise.
And he's speaking openly, which I appreciate as a media guy
who needs chaos.
I appreciate the candor, but some of his former teammates haven't.
I'm just curious, where are you on former players
building their brand after their time in sports?
So we start before and we start at the very start of a career
and ask someone, are you interested being a broadcast?
Are you interested in business?
Are you interested in coaching and trying to lay the foundation
there?
What you just said reminds me of when Trichman was quarterback
of the Dallas Cowboys.
He was very successful on the field, but people thought,
well, he's sort of vanilla.
He's not going to be very good on TV.
What they didn't realize is how much the starting quarterbacks
have opinions but keep them to themselves
because they need the team to unify around them.
And then probably went on to be splendid as a broadcast.
I think it's difficult to call out individual players
and have that be well accepted.
And so the Kellogg book that every star player
could write is something that I have to carefully consider.
Yeah, the word brand.
I know you had mentioned when you meet with clients,
you think, are you interested in media?
But now it's like, you can become the media instead
of joining it.
It's just changed so much.
I mean, the job, who quote unquote,
job of influencer lead, that did not exist 10 years ago.
No, but you see the thing is this next generation
grows up with social media.
So Twitter and Instagram and TikTok, YouTube,
are a big part of their life.
So it comes naturally to them.
And so we help players brand.
It's based on their unique personalities
and who they are off the field, as well as on the field
and their ability to create tiny bits of content
that they post regularly.
And if they do that, remember one thing about profile
is it has never been true in this country
that the leading sport, which is in a co-football,
was also a leading television show.
So 130 people watch the Super Bowl.
I mean, they're bragging when 15 million people
watch something in sports.
It's dominating American culture.
So the new celebrities in some ways
that become NFL quarterback.
Yeah, it's interesting.
You say NFL, but here's the other thing.
I often look at this incitedly.
If you look at Instagram following
and social media following Twitter, Facebook, TikTok,
the largest followers for sports
are almost all in the NBA.
It's crazy because it's a global sport
and they have everybody in Asia, India.
They love the NBA.
They don't really care about football.
And it's weird because my homes is a massive star in America.
I don't know that he could go to Italy next week
and not have mobs around him, but LeBron James
sure could not.
He would be bobbed everywhere he goes.
Talk about the global sport.
Yes, so basketball is played in the parties.
It's played in the Middle East.
It's played in Russian, Croatia, and all over the place.
So they had a head start in terms of branding.
The NFL is playing catch up
because for most of the world, football is soccer again
and by far the most dominant sport.
So the NBA got out front
and because people in China are playing basketball
and because people in South America play basketball
many of the places, it enabled them to extend their brand
and create the Kobe Bryant LeBron James
of the world as international superstars.
Yeah.
I want to quickly go back to a guy like Travis Kelsey,
who's a teammate of my homes.
So five years ago, the Kelsey Brothers
were a fine story, right?
Jason Kelsey, kind of an anonymous offensive lineman.
Travis Kelsey, a tight end, really good,
probably on the Hall of Fame track.
Now Jason Kelsey has maybe the most popular podcast
of any four NFL player.
And Travis Kelsey's getting married to Taylor Swift
and is now a global superstar.
It's crazy how fast things change.
I'm curious, when you talk to your clients,
are people mentioning, hey, man, can I start a podcast
and become as big as Kelsey?
You know, I'm dating a celebrity.
Do I need to enhance my profile globally?
Is that stuff gonna help me?
Does that matter?
Let me tell you what's actually interesting
if you remember it accurately.
The commercials that ran the big Kelsey or a couple years ago,
were planned way ahead of when he started to go with Taylor Swift.
So they had to be done earlier.
So they were based on the success of the Kansas City
chiefs and the irrepressible Travis Kelsey.
He just bounced out as a huge personality,
very attracted to people, then you combine them
with the biggest superstar in the world and boom.
And you're right, offensive lineman for the most part
you're only known for giving up sacks and holding.
And are largely anonymous for most of the people,
but the combination of the two of them
and the chemistry between them allowed
Jason Kelsey to be like every man,
to be like the guy you would have a beer with in the bar.
And he comes out all warm and fuzzy.
And so give credit to whoever they're marketing for him,
but because he did a Hall of Famous job
and in elevating them with brands.
Let me just ask you, I guess, about quarterback,
to go back to your guy in my homes.
So it's interesting, the last couple of playoffs,
what we've seen a lot of are teams advancing
because their quarterback is not paid that heavily.
They're either on the rookie quarterback salary
or they're one of these like middle tier quarterback salaries,
AKA Sam Darnold, you know, Baker Mayfield,
one of the playoffs last year.
And it's interesting because your guy in my homes
and Josh Allen and the best guys are making a ton of money.
Yet Dak Prescott can't get back to the playoffs.
Lamar Jackson misses the playoffs.
I'm just curious, do you think we're at a point
where there'll be like a correction on quarterback salaries?
Because Tom Brady famously took less.
Now I know he had, you know, a supermodel wife at the time,
took less.
And as a result, the Patriots for two decades had a run.
I don't know if we're gonna see another one of those
unless a quarterback is like, Hey, I don't need 70 million,
you know, or 70 million he gets a cap.
I'm fine taking a middle tier salary.
So you have to have a sophisticated quarterback client
who understands the value of winning
to his overall economic base.
And nothing beats being MVP is a super bowl.
And for the quarterback, if they can make it
through the playoffs into that super bowl,
it's unbelievable riches will come to them in marketing.
And second of all, you have some quarterbacks
that are hyper competitive.
And third of all, remember when you're talking about quarterbacks
who are only making $40 million and set a 70 million dollars,
these are some of the wealthiest people in the country.
So you have someone who's making a decision
that they want to have a career satisfaction and be competitive.
And they want the left tackle in front of them
to be of the highest quality
and not spend the whole game getting hurt in fact.
That's a very rational decision to make.
But it's tough to tell a guy, Hey, man,
Dak Prescott who has zero MVPs, he's making X.
You have two MVPs, but if you take 20 million more,
you can win.
Do you want to do that deal for less 20 million?
Because then it's also like, Hey,
well, what's my owner gonna do with that 20 million?
Is he gonna pocket it or are they gonna spend wisely?
Well, except part of the trade off
when quarterbacks are taking these deals,
I'm sure I'm Brady went over the roster
and said, who can we get if I take 10 million dollars left?
And what will this practically mean?
So these are very honest discussions that go on.
