Hello, I'm Stephen Willis, and this episode is brought to you by Mazda.
1:29
Like our players, we're driven by the details.
1:31
Highlights make the real, but the work behind them, that's what makes them count.
1:36
Stay tuned for this week's Moving the Game Forward, the all new Mazda CX-5, and more to
1:46
On today's show, Spring practice has kicked off finally.
1:50
We had a little bit of helmets and shoulder pads, or helmets and shorts, work that was
1:55
done Thursday in our Friday, I should say.
1:58
We are going to talk about that.
2:00
We're going to talk to the mayor of Corinth, Tom Banderford, about what's going on, and
2:04
some rumors around what's happening in the peak-golding era.
2:09
All of that's coming up, and more next, all right, timing.
2:13
One thing that I've heard.
2:16
We play with rumors on this show, so one of the rumors that has come out is this is a much
2:20
more serious football practice situation.
2:25
The peak-golding era is more serious.
2:29
There's a dress code, they're very specific on what needs to be worn.
2:33
There's instructions on things that, hey, you can have them, but you have them, you have
2:38
to wear them, you can't just have them for decoration.
2:41
It feels like the chaos that was the Lane Kiffon era, that is going to be going away.
2:48
Yeah, Lane took a few things from Sabin, but he didn't take a lot as far as that goes,
2:57
and people forget that Pete was Sabin's DC for quite some time, and he tried to get
3:04
Pete to stay when he came to Ole Miss, so I think you're going to see more no BS type
3:11
of head coaching, and the coaching staff will fall right into, the players will get
3:17
used to it as well, and some business for them as well.
3:20
Yeah, and Pete's a player's coach, so we're not just going to walk into Bud Kilmer, all
3:25
of a sudden, as the coach of Ole Miss, so it's just going to be like things that influence
3:32
winning, and if it doesn't, it goes away.
3:35
If it does not help winning, it goes away, and having gloves attached to a belt that you
3:42
have no intention of wearing, that does not influence winning.
3:46
Oh, well, well, Winnie went to LSU anyway, but, oh, okay, go ahead.
3:53
Winning, there's a big deal, and Winnie, but I was when you said, you know, all the extra
3:59
flair, Winnie went to LSU, it was kind of the joke.
4:06
Okay, all right, it's all good.
4:08
Jersey number, Zep came out, John Tay Cook, number zero, Doos Knight, number two.
4:15
Let's see, Horatio Fields, number 11, Darryl Gill, number 12, all of them will come out
4:22
on the roster whenever they get released.
4:23
It might be released by the time you were watching this, but as we're recording on Friday
4:28
morning, while practice is going on, that is happening.
4:33
I think the Doos Knight wearing number two, that was probably baked into a contract when
4:39
he agreed to come, because it was a big problem for Doos Knight whenever he got to Auburn
4:45
and found out that he was not going to get to wear number two.
4:49
Yeah, well, you got to make them happy, and he's the future past Trinidad, so he's a
5:00
And I'm looking forward to news coming out, the first media opportunity, I think is Tuesday,
5:06
so we'll get to hear from Pete, we'll get to hear from John David Baker likely and
5:12
I'm interested to see what the practice looks like with John David Baker at the head of
5:19
I mean, structurally, it's going to be exactly the same thing that we've always seen.
5:25
What I've been talking about in recent weeks, or what are his crutch plays going to
5:30
When it gets down to 22 or 23 on the play clock and he needs to go, what is he going to
5:36
Yeah, I'm looking forward to seeing that, like you said, it's basically the same offense
5:43
we've been running for five years with just a little bit of a twist, I'm sure.
5:50
If you go back and look at his Eastern Carolina tapes, it's basically the same offenses
6:01
we have, just with a lot better players than ECU at Ole Miss.
6:08
Yeah, and it's also important to remember John David Baker was here in 2021, 2022, in
6:16
He was the co-offensive coordinator in 2022 and 2023.
6:20
The reason I bring that up is what people would say about learning the offense or something
6:27
That was three different offenses in three different seasons.
6:31
It's going to be the exact same thing and based off of what we're used to seeing, but it
6:36
was the Matt Corral system in 2021 under Jeff Levy.
6:40
It was the 70% run with Quenchon Judkins and Zach Evans in 2022 and then you had the
6:46
Jackson dark team that through nearly 60% of the time had Tray Harris and all those guys
6:51
that went against the Penn State and anything lines.
6:55
When you look at it, it's like, well, those are three different offenses.
6:58
No, it's the same offense.
6:59
It's just making it be built around what you do best and I don't see any reason why John
7:07
David Baker is not going to do that.
7:11
It's like Bear Bryant said one time when they asked him about his offense.
7:18
He said, buddy, you dance with the one that run you and that's basically, you've got
7:24
to play to the talents on your team.
7:30
When we come back, we will ask Tom specifically what he's looking forward to in this spring
7:36
practice and what he's expecting over the next couple of weeks.
7:40
We will talk to him all about that next.
7:48
This is moving the game forward from Mazda.
7:52
For those who know the score that never tells the whole story.
7:55
This week's player of the game is Trinidad Chambus, who finished eight in the Heisman Trophy
7:59
voting despite having a coach that absolutely refused to promote him for any awards.
8:05
It is safe to say that Trinidad Chambus will enjoy it very much when he steps on practice
8:13
There's more of these players than the highlights, the early mornings, the late night runs, the
8:18
constantly showing up for their squad on and off the field.
8:22
The all new Mazda CX-5 moves the same way with more space to connect, a bold new design,
8:28
and more intuitive technology.
8:30
So you can stay connected to the road.
8:33
You position you play the all new Mazda CX-5, more to move every side of you.
8:44

With spring practice getting underway, I am really curious.
10:32
He won Lacey's the best running back in college football, trying to dad chambles, best
10:35
quarterback in college, a Lucas car and error, best kicker in college football, or the
10:41
storylines for what we usually get in spring practice, they're not really there.
10:48
So what will you actually be looking at over the next couple of weeks?
10:53
First off, you know, I'm just an old school football fan of the lines, offensive line and
11:03
We've got the interior offensive line returning, but we're probably going to have two tackles
11:09
that didn't play at Ole Miss last year.
11:12
So I'm looking at how that works, how they protect the quarterback.
11:18
And on defense, I just want to see how the plug-and-play kids are going to do, particularly
11:25
And his name escapes me.
11:31
The kid from Florida.
11:33
Oh, Mackay Borough, I think this is name.
11:37
Yeah, I want to see how he does as well.
11:39
So the purchase is going to be wearing number three this year, apparently.
11:44
Purchase is going to be, here's my first prediction.
11:48
Purchase is going to make us forget about him on me, Ellen.
11:52
That's my first prediction of the year.
11:58
You know, and well, this is, okay, let's talk about this for a second, and it's going
12:05
to come across as me being a hater, but whatever.
12:09
But Prince Will, a mom, me, Ellen had nine and a half sacks, and everybody points out
12:13
it's like, this is a player that had nine and a half sacks.
12:16
This isn't like, Prince Lee, having ten and a half sacks in 12 games.
12:22
This is Prince Will having nine and a half sacks in 15 games.
12:27
And you're not getting a nine and a half sack player with Prince Will, a mom, me, Ellen.
12:34
You're getting a seven sack, a six and a half sack player.
12:38
She just benefited from more games, including a game against the two-line Green Wave, that
12:43
just doesn't have the athletes to match up.
12:47
I don't think you can compare Prince Will to Prince Lee.
12:50
I think Prince Lee is a better player, and I think once the NFL shakes out, that will
12:56
I think Blake Purchase needs to shoot towards Prince Lee, a mom, me, Ellen, and not Prince
13:02
Will, a mom, me, Ellen.
13:04
Because if you've got the back end of that defense covered, and can turn them loose, him
13:08
on Blake Purchase on one side, Santana Perkins on the other, it's going to be fun for all
13:15
Miss fans of my opinion.
13:19
The secondary is going to be so much better that that's going to help.
13:25
And of course, the depth on the defensive line.
13:30
We finally get the local kid for one year that went to Alabama and then went to Colorado.
13:37
Hopefully, he'll be a good guy in this defense.
13:47
You've got to remember that he was recruited by Pete Golding when Pete was at Alabama.
13:54
So I think that that'll help.
13:57
So the depth will help.
13:59
Of course, I can't forget, you know, Eccles and Jam Brown, you know, all those guys, it's
14:09
just going to be a wonderful defensive front.
14:12
Yeah, I'm curious to see because everybody assumes that Borough is going to be the zero
14:20
He's going to be the Savion Harris replacement.
14:22
I think that when Jehem Otis gets into the system that he's played before, he's going,
14:28
well, I say that Borough came from the four to defense, which was run by Ron Roberts,
14:35
which is essentially the same defense.
14:40
I think it's good to have two Zebian Harrises going into the season as opposed to just
14:48
I can remember back when we would play Alabama in the, in the Sabin hey days, you know,
14:54
a lot of times their starter would get worn out.
14:57
And they bring somebody out that was just as good or better than their starter.
15:03
So it's always good to have that depth, especially on the defensive line.
15:07
Yeah, there was one game speaking, speaking of those Alabama teams and how you just start
15:14
accumulating depth and the second team, you might think you're getting a break, but you're
15:18
not really getting a break.
15:22
You were playing against Alabama, maybe in 2017, possibly in 2018, it was in Tuscaloosa.
15:30
It was like 31 to three at halftime.
15:34
And you're like, good gosh, man, Alabama is just killing Ole Miss.
15:39
This is in the heart of the Matt Luke era, the team's own probation.
15:42
I mean, you might have had Taylor Poeke in linebacker, just for that reference.
15:47
Second half came out.
15:48
It was like, Alabama pulled their quarter back and was like, well, okay, we're not going
15:52
to get smoked at least.
15:53
I'm glad the backups in the game, let's try and get some positives from this game.
15:59
And it was two of, that was my first introduction to two of, and they proceeded to score 35
16:05
points in the second half and looked like a machine doing it with the wide receivers
16:11
And it's like, good grief, man.
16:14
And now Ole Miss being at the point where second string depth is that impressive is
16:22
I mean, you sit there.
16:25
Let's say that Trinidad Chamble is jumps out on LSU 35 to seven at halftime and you want
16:31
to pull Trinidad out of the game or what's going on.
16:33
Well, then you have a five star elite of in quarterback coming in that has Lamar Jackson
16:41
level running ability coming, it's, Ole Miss fans need to take heart that Ole Miss
16:49
is finally at the fact where there's no like breathers.
16:52
It's not like, hey, there's 17 really good players on this team, but there's no depth.
16:58
That's not the case anymore.
17:01
You know, NIL has been wonderful for Ole Miss.
17:08
And the blue ones, and this is absolutely, absolutely.
17:12
You'll see people on articles all the time trying to get rid of collectives.
17:17
Get rid of collectives.
17:18
And it's always the blue bloods doing that.
17:21
It's because they do not like the New World Order where Indiana and Vandy and Ole Miss
17:26
and Georgia Tech and all of these places can be good really quickly because it threatens
17:32
what they do because they also are getting people off of their roster.
17:38
I don't think everybody's saying that college football is broken, that's what you hear.
17:44
This whole thing is broken.
17:46
This isn't broken for Ole Miss.
17:49
It's broken for the former blue bloods.
17:53
And you hit the nail on the head.
17:55
That's what they're trying to do.
17:57
They're trying to get rid of that because they want to get back to, let me give you a
18:01
large charger and 20 grand in a McDonald's bag.
18:05
That's what they want to go back to.
18:07
By the way, Tommy Tupperville having an opinion on the Transfer Portal Rooting College football
18:13
is one of the most disingenuous, hypocritical things I've ever heard.
18:19
I get that he's a politician and that's normal.
18:22
But can we hear it from anybody else besides this guy?
18:25
He was the original Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss.
18:33
When we come back, we will continue to talk about spring football, all of that coming
18:39
Next, this is the Lockdown Ole Miss podcast.

20:57
All right, we're going to talk about expectations before we get out of here.
21:03
Really quick expectations of spring practice.
21:05
Tommy, what do you want to see?
21:08
Give me three things that you want to see accomplished in spring practice this year.
21:13
Outside of the normal stuff.
21:15
We're just talking about, we're not talking about the wins and losses in the fall.
21:19
We're talking about the building blocks to get to the wins and losses in the fall.
21:23
Yeah, I want to see how the, my number one thing is I want to see how the secondary gels.
21:29
That's where we've seen a lot of change.
21:32
Number two, you know, we got a whole lot of receivers in.
21:36
I want to see how the transfer receivers do.
21:39
Want to see how the tight ends do.
21:41
You know, we lost a big, big player at tight end.
21:45
And I want to see how the running game does minus, minus Lacey.
21:52
I want to see how the number two through six do.
21:56
I want to see if anyone separates himself during the spring.
22:01
You know, the big thing for me is this is the first time in a few years where there hasn't been a spring portal after spring practice.
22:09
So these guys now have a vested interest into doing the best they can to move up that ladder in the depth chart.
22:19
Yeah, and you're at the point where not putting out depth charts, not doing that you're doing yourself the disservice of what's going on.
22:28
So let's talk about those three things real quick before we get out of here.
22:32
First of all, you mentioned depth in the secondary, your paying attention, what's going on.
22:36
I think Joe Nelloguero, not Edwin Joseph is injured a little bit, so a little bit slow getting in.
22:44
So when you look at the safety position on the back foot,
22:49
I think a cornerback with Jay Crawford and with Antonio Cuyton, Sharif Denson corners fine.
22:55
I think Jalen Braxton has a chance to move back and be a free safety if he's willing to do that.
23:01
I agree with you a little bit on paper.
23:04
The secondary is much better than it was a year ago.
23:08
Yeah, I just want to see how how they all melt into the defensive plan.
23:17
All right, so the wide receivers, you mentioned a little bit early.
23:21
And I think Duce Alexander is going to have one of the spots on lock this year.
23:27
And I think John Tay Cook is the other one.
23:31
There's a going to be a battle in my opinion for the big wide receiver.
23:36
And it's going to be between Horatio Field, who is a really good player and Caleb Cunningham,
23:41
who is one of the best wide receivers to come out of Mississippi in the last 10 or so years.
23:48
I honestly think Caleb Cunningham is going to eventually win that battle.
23:53
But here's the change that I see happening under Lane Kiffin, you know, not making fun of Lane or anything like that.
24:01
Four to five wide receivers played over the course of a season.
24:05
That's all you got you might you might assign 12 players in the transfer reporter,
24:09
but five's going to get to play that the tempo dictates that.
24:13
And also they just like having their dudes out there.
24:17
I think more wide receivers are going to play this year.
24:20
But with Ole Miss, it's not played, but played a play.
24:23
It's going to be series to series.
24:25
So other than Duce Alexander, who's going to be out there a lot,
24:31
you're going to see an alternation of Horatio Fields and Caleb Cunningham in my opinion.
24:35
You're going to see John Tay Cook and I think Dylan Offord has a chance to step up as well.
24:41
But you also have Traylon Ray and I say a hard trip that's going to figure in the mix as well.
24:46
The numbers are still there in the wide receiver room.
24:49
There's just no going into spraying a tray Harris or Jonathan Mingo,
24:54
that typical big wide receiver who's going to be the alpha of what's going on.
24:58
And I think it's going to be Caleb Cunningham.
25:03
I think Caleb Cunningham is going to have a bright future in the NFL.
25:11
And last of all, before we get out of here, you mentioned Kiwan Lazy.
25:15
He's the number one, absolutely.
25:17
But he got 300 carries a year ago.
25:20
He broke down against Miami in the last game of the year because of overuse in my opinion.
25:26
Now, Ole Miss is responded by going out and getting Mackay Frazier.
25:31
Josh Dye, JT Lindsey.
25:33
They had Shikai Mills night already.
25:36
I think McCaleb Thomas, the running back from Grenade, is in that room as well.
25:42
And the freshmen that they signed this year.
25:45
This room is as deep as any running back room that Ole Miss has ever had, period.
25:52
None of those guys are going to be the starter.
25:54
But I think you're going to see a knife fight developing for those 50-year-so carries
26:02
that Kiwan Lazy is not going to get this year.
26:06
And I think part of the reason that Lazy stayed was he knew that
26:14
they were going to take some of the load off of.
26:16
And God bless his heart.
26:18
He was wore out at the end of the year.
26:21
He was just, you know, that was just too much.
26:25
Yeah, and honestly, I think that's the reason he didn't go to LSU,
26:30
even though the full court press has been on that kid from November on, like the Pat McAfee show
26:37
they're making sure he was on the back.
26:38
He was taking off his belt and doing all that.
26:41
It was all intentional and part of recruiting him so he could develop some kind of a bond
26:47
I don't think he won at 300 carries next year.
26:53
Kiwan Lazy will be better with less carries than all around guy.
26:57
But it'll be interesting to see who's going to be the Jerry and Ely in this 2021 backfield.
27:02
Who's going to be the Snoop Conner in this 2021 backfield?
27:07
That's something that I will be paying close attention to.
27:10
And, you know, I'm thinking, you know, Frazier or Die.
27:16
But I really like Shikai Mils Knight and JT Lindsay.
27:21
So I'm not going to put them out of any competition either.
27:25
I really liked what I saw briefly from Shikai Mils Knight, his freshman year.
27:36
I don't think he played enough.
27:37
I think he counted as a red shirt.
27:39
So that's a good thing.
27:41
But yeah, that we've got so much to him.
27:44
It's amazing for us older people that remember like you said, where we had SEC caliber kids
27:54
for 17 or 18 of them.
27:56
But after that, it was, you know, yeah, you just were going to wire down.
28:02
They had to play the whole game.
28:04
All right, Tom, what do you got going on this weekend, buddy?
28:09
Just probably going to relax.
28:11
Maybe watch some baseball hope we can take at least one from state.
28:18
They sure do look good though.
28:20
Yeah, they look real good.
28:21
Hey, but they don't have Kevin McGonigal who had four hits in his debut with Detroit Tigers.
28:27
So I'm happy about that.
28:29
There you go, buddy.
28:31
That was a pretty good day.
