Huge ballgame on a Wednesday. We'll get to the basketball Cajun's and Ode to you advance

Well, we got to start off with Southern Miss hanging on I like to come from a head victory up five nothing and they win on

a couple of strikeout wild pitches. I mean

That's got to be a brutal way to lose a game and we'll get to that because I do want to point out because I think the broadcasters do a great job

For Southern Miss they're trying not to blame the catcher though, and I think there is some responsibility there, but nonetheless

Huge crowd at Pete Taylor Stadium, and I need to let Southern Miss fans know randomly. I mentioned this earlier in a week

Or last week, I guess when I was in Lafayette. I met Pete Taylor's son Doug

He teaches at the local Catholic school St. Thomas Moore so random. He was my friend's teacher and

Getting ready to teach his niece in a couple of years. So I met Pete Taylor's son Doug nonetheless a great crowd

6 p.m. Game exactly when my plane was taken off. So I may have seen

May have heard of the three-run home run. All right had happened

And

Southern Miss

Takes the lead. Dre Barrett with a three-run home run in the first where they say 450 feet. I mean, you just

Two things happened in that one swing right? That's exactly what Southern Miss wanted and exactly what Mississippi state did not

All right, and I'm

You just didn't want to get the crowd into it from the get go and they

Got it got into it from the get go right almost too good to be true and now at three nothing

Even at five nothing nobody thinks that game is over with Mississippi state. All right, if it's LSU

And their offensive struggles maybe all right because they will see what happens against occasions, but they have been struggling offensively

at least this past weekend

in Baton Rouge

But Mississippi state battles back right they get it back to five five and they take the lead at six

Five I turn it on it's the bottom of the seventh inning and

There's a couple of runners on

and

I think it came all the way around from they come all the way around from second base

um

And the runner came home and tied the ball game up on a wild pitch now

As the announcer said bad break for the catcher for Mississippi state hit him right into chest protector and caromed off

A lot of times when it goes off the chest protector

You're leaning forward so it deadens in the ground, but this one hit the hit the chest protector and went

Towards this other mistuckout

All right, so I think the same picture was in there and he's ahead in the count of the next batter and the go ahead run is on a third base

And you know what kind of pitch is coming you know he's gonna put it in the dirt. You know they're trying to get a swing and miss

And I think he went right through the five hole

Here's the problem with what the catcher stance is doing right he's on one knee and he's got his leg out stretched

He can't get down to the ground

He can't block the baseball that's a problem, you know

And you got to be anticipating that that happens all the time whether it be

professionally minor leagues college when you got a runner on it third you're ahead of the guy at the plate

And you're not coming in with a fastball you're coming in with a pitch that he can't hit

I mean the pitcher made

First of all the first pitch that was for a wild pitch was just a bad pitch and the Southern is better swung and missed at it

But you know, they're throwing pitches in the dirt. You got to anticipate that

You got him you got to be ready for the wild pitch

I mean Southern miss war in a ballgame

On two strikeouts

So I do think there's some responsibility that goes to the Mississippi state catcher in that situation right?

I mean the pitcher made his pitch twice

And the Mississippi state catcher couldn't keep the ball in front of him and that's that's a huge a difference now

RPI wise not an upset right Southern miss is

Still number one

Right can't can't beat Mississippi state and not and go down

They are still number one in more Nolan's RPI

Miss by the way Missouri state

Is number 11 that's where the Cajun's lost two out of three with to open up the season

So that's not too bad. But almost sudden um looks like Mississippi state has

Fallen a little bit right they were ranked fourth overall

But now they fall to 31. Let me uh, let me see if that if that's including tonight

They are 31 though. So maybe they haven't fallen

They they you know more Nolan's got that

all the way to the right

How many spots up you go on how many spots down you go

And maybe that's what they were 31. So I know Southern misses ranked 10th and

Mississippi state ranked fourth, but

This ball game was at Southern miss

And they're the number one RPIT

So I don't think it's I don't think it's an upset

In my estimation that Southern miss be Mississippi state now

I'm not sure people gonna want to hear this it

If somehow

Southern miss beats them. I think they play again, right? That's a home and home, which it should be absolutely

Later on in the season

um

Do they get more consideration

For national seed than Mississippi state. I mean, there's only eight of those you could very easily have one be eight and one be nine

All right, so we'll see what happens. We unfortunately know the result of what that's gonna be

um

Although a couple of years ago that's wasn't the case right they played

At Southern miss instead of Tennessee

That may have had to do the weather of course the weather came. We don't want to talk about that. It just

That's what that's when it flipped to Tennessee. Southern miss should have won uh that super regional

Uh as well nonetheless

uh

I don't think it's an upset and

Southern miss is just

And continue to rock and roll

I mean a

Well-play ballgame until the end

basically right

Well-play ballgame the end Ben Hington made a nice catch and

Right field it wasn't quite as deep as I guess you know it's his first thought

I don't even think his glove was against the wall

Um kind of looked like he just made a catch on a fly ball

Certainly didn't reach over the wall or nothing

Well, you got to make those plays it you know and got to go back on the ball and and you know

I'm not sure even landed into the wall, but nonetheless Southern miss with your seven to six victory

Uh over Mississippi state and again just continuing to help out the Sun Belt

We'll get to some other ball games uh in the Sun Belt martial worn

Arkansas state one all the sudden Louisiana Tech has lost four in a row

Hmm

But let's talk

It's Olvera 29 points on 9 is 16 shooting only took a couple of threes. Oh, and he had both of them

9 out of 11 from the free throw line and 9 rebounds the thing about the cages is for the most part

They basically play with four guards and one big that's it and yet they still out rebounded Georgia state

Second champ points second chance points 20 to 8

And that's the difference in the ballgame

Or so right that's 12 points cages one by nine

Dorian finster did play had 13 points coming off the concussion

But also Olvera and he's actually wearing a mask maybe a broken nose. Uh, he had 12 points

Jones he's the big guy he's the big guy to begin with he starts and I think he had

Um, well maybe yeah, maybe had five points to begin the game and he also had

eight rebounds

Beowulf the bench had 10 for Georgia state

It was the jolani now handled and show a second team all sun belt did what he could

Uh, keep Georgia state in it 20 points on 8 to 12 shooting does follow out

Of this ballgame

Tucker had 18 shepelle had a 13

Um, and that was mostly scoring for Georgia state Georgia state shot 49 percent

From the floor and the Cajuns

Only 43 percent but again those uh

Turnovers was in favor of the Cajuns 14 to 9

Although points off turnovers was 17 14 Cajuns. That's not a huge difference

But the second chance points were obviously the difference in the 40 to 30 in the rebounding edge

That was obviously a difference

Cajuns gonna play jm you jm you coming off that tough loss to coastal Carolina

We'll see if they bounce back they had one

In the nightcap if you will it was oh to you

hanging on a couple of different times to take out ULM 87 to 80

This was a 14 nothing ballgame to begin with and I believe they had let me see

They had a 27 to 8 lead and when I say they I mean old dominion like this was not a ballgame from the get go except

They caught they being ULM got it down to six points. They're down

They're down 19 there's 27 to 8. That's where I got the 27 from they're down 19 and

O.D.U. pulls away at half and goes into half up by 11

With 10 minutes left to go they're up 68 56 they get to 71 58

It's 74 to 60 with eight minutes left to go all right, and then all of a sudden

ULM

Starts climbing back in the ballgame when they're down by wait wait for it 12 84 set 72

Saunders makes a layup makes it a 10 point ballgame

MJ Russell makes a layup makes it an eight point

Eight point ballgame Christian Lewis makes a layup makes it a

Six point ballgame 84 78 ULM actually had a steal

But I thought it was Saunders who missed a three-pointer with a minute left to go could have been 84

And that's how close ULM was to getting back into this ballgame. They did make it 85 80

But um, O.D.U. makes a couple of free throws and that was it

O.D.U. is

Now getting Georgia's other and let's see if the line is off of that because I O.D.U. has got a shot at that ballgame

I think they think we found out that they lost um a couple of times

closely

I do not have the lines as of a Tuesday evening

As of right now so

But it will be the Cajuns up first a six p.m. Eastern five p.m. Central time

taking on JMU all right and

Georgia Southern taking on old dominion that will follow

at

830 Eastern times 730 a central time. Let me see did the Cajuns

Let's see

Did the Cajuns and JMU play this year of the Cajuns, JMU lost to the Cajuns

64 61 in fact that's

Oddly enough, that was when they're winning streak started right after that

They had lost a couple of ball games to Southern Miss and the Cajuns and it looked like JMU was going in the wrong direction

And they beat Toledo and reeled off

Six straight games before losing to coastal so JMU

Um, let's see what JMU could do um

But I think JMU

Ends up getting Arkansas state after that right in that where that goes

So I think that's the situation there and so

Um

I'm not sure they're gonna be able to

Uh get it here. Let's see here. JMU. Yeah

JMU gets oh Southern miss. Oh, all right. That'll be interesting

Um actually Georgia Southern okay Georgia Southern and old dominion get the winner

That winner gets Arkansas state so there you go all right

So JMU may have a shot at moving on

I think Arkansas state will win that ballgame over the winner of

Georgia Southern and ODU all right um, I'll take I'll take ODU win in the second ballgame

And I'll take I'll take JMU taking down the Cajuns, but we'll see all right

Uh, we shall see all right. Let's talk more college baseball

Uh, big game on Wednesday in Lafayette

the Cajuns hosting the defending national champs the LSU Tigers who

We're winning

I mean, it is a lot of fun right now

Right, I mean, we got basketball

Baseball, I know softball is going on

And you have these huge early season midweek ball games

Putting the sunbelt in really good shape

Early on in the season and again, the RPIs will fall

I understand that and others will go up

But before we get to LSU in the cage

It's just heading into this ball game

And this will change because I'm sure there's West Coast games going on

And we just to talk about the sundault

You know because they are doing incredibly well

Southern miss is one

All right, the Cajuns didn't play on Tuesday

And they dropped a few spots

I think from 14 to 17 but still awesome

Troy is 56

Marshall had a win

They moved up about 40 spots to 186

All right, which is somehow amazing

Because Georgia's Southern is 162 and has one two ball games

Georgia state is 95

They did lose to Georgia but Georgia Tech but played him tough

Did beat him one time earlier in the year

South Alabama is 121

I think we mentioned Arkansas state is 54

And Texas state is 81

So I mean you got one two three four five six sunbell teams in the top 100

As of right now and you got one two

You got two in the top 20

I was going to say top 50 but

You got you got two in the top 50 but four in the top 60

So I mean that's pretty good

If you're the sundault this early on in the season and

You know

LSU is the one in the 70s right about now, which is the interesting part

Because they were playing teams like

Dartmouth Grambling and northeastern early on and northeastern

That pumped because they were playing LSU

And again, that's going to help every time LSU goes up northeastern is going to go up all right

And so now what you have here with the Cajuns is it's a sold out stadium

Uh, it'll be full

I don't really want to get into the issue with the attendance

But it just didn't look very good against UC San Diego just didn't

Just didn't look very good. There was not a whole lot of people in the ballpark

I saw a Saturday

Um, I must have missed it Sunday, but it just didn't look good

Uh, and I compared to Saturday because

They had I didn't think they'd have 10,000 people there for northeastern

But LSU was full on Saturday gorgeous day by the way and

Even Monday for LSU northeastern 6 p.m

It was kind of empty when I got there and then I looked and I from the dugouts in

It was relatively full you started to get out to the bleachers that thinned out

I don't know what the attendance was, but it's certainly 6,8,000 and I know there's a difference but

Boy the Cajuns aren't even putting a thousand in on Saturday, but okay nonetheless

It will be a full house on

Uh, it'll be a full house on Wednesday and again just a great opportunity for the Cajuns and sometimes and again

It's not because it's not a series

Um

Compared to what so the miss just did a lot of tech and you can really start to pinpoint

where we need to improve fast um

I mean, I guess it's specific

For you know, Mississippi State the catcher's got a good to do a better job of

You know when you know a breaking ball is coming

You got a block it you got to anticipate that so that's something that Mississippi State can improve on

And so we'll see what happens and again

There's a difference between losing and not

playing well and LSU did not play well against northeastern on Monday. They just did not all right

They had six errors. They had a bunch of wild pitches had some pass balls. It was just um

not

Pretty all right

I think there was one time

was it

Was it LSU? I think the catcher missed

The sign and it hit the umpire

Right in the face mask

And that was a wild pitch allowing northeastern to come home and score a run out if you go back and look at that replay

The umpire who is staggering a little bit um

He turns around to look at the play if there's a play at the plate

Collecting himself to do that, but that's how much LSU was off so they did not play well bats came around late

All right, absolutely had a chance to to tie or win the ballgame late

We've seen plenty of that in Alice box um

Alex box stadium

I'll throw out the time but the big thing about LSU lately is they have not been hitting at all

at all um

It just has not been it's been bad uh for them and so

They've been getting great pitching and we'll go through these games here in a second

Uh

But they just have not been um

Hitting you know, they lost seven to six to McNeese they had a late surge in that one

But they beat Dartmouth five to two

They beat northeastern three to one

And they beat Dartmouth three to nothing

Northeastern put a 10 spot on or I put a uh, I'm sorry put a 13 spot on and was winning 13 to two

So

We'll see what happens see if the cage is pitching which has been

You know relatively good after that first weekend

Um, they shut out rice. They beat Maryland nine to one

They beat Kansas state one to nothing. They beat Kansas state three to two

They blanked UC San Diego eight nothing and four to three all right in their losses

You know when you know it they gave up eight runs 13 runs and seven runs

So when the pitching is there for the Cajuns

It's in their wheelhouse

All right, so we'll see if if the Cajuns can hang and take down

LSU which is a huge help

For uh the Sunbelt all right do not have to worry what the tendency is going to be it will be sold out

on

Wednesday all right, so that is the good news all right now going back to Tuesday's action

um

E coastal uh

Coastal Carolina uh let one slip away against uh, NC state had a lead

tied it up and let it get away from them again

um

NC state 64 over coastal Carolina. It just may not be coastal Carolina's year. It's just it's going to be tough

We'll see what happens this weekend

Um, and the following weekend as conference played kicks off

um

Maybe the guys who are stepping into Friday and Saturday night going to be a little bit more

uncomfortable after making it

Uh, Marshall with a big win over Virginia Tech 13 to four

Marshall climbing back towards 500 they're five and six

And I think are they getting

Who do they get oh they got West Virginia and I think that's an extra ballgame

I think they just scheduled that and that is um, that's going to be in Huntington on

On Wednesday, so that's pretty nice

uh from Marshall see if they can uh, take advantage of that uh situation all right

Arkansas state beats up on Louisiana Tech 10 to two

I went looking for Lane boroughs quotes. I did not see any post game video posted for this one

But all of a sudden Louisiana Tech has dropped was at four in a row

Four in a row after beating Ohio State

Northwestern State in Memphis. Remember they started to eat in one. They're now eight in five

They get Arkansas State again

And then they're going to South Alabama this weekend. We'll see what happens there. All right

And let's see what else happened

On Tuesday in uh, the Sunbelt uh Georgia State does fall, but you know battles Georgia Tech four to one south

Alabama run rules UAB 11 to one

And uh Monroe cooled off a little bit

losing 15 to five to

Monroe on Wednesday. We talked about the Cajuns

But that's not it

There's huge opportunities across the board

Appstate is hosting number 15 and 11 to one wake forest

Troy is at Vanderbilt although Vanderbilt is just seven and six

Georgia Southern is at the Citadel. The Citadel has got more wins

And Georgia Southern does. We'll see if Georgia Southern can start climbing back towards 500

As we mentioned West Virginia number 23 mountaineers taken on Marshall in Huntington

Monroe gets southeastern again. Arkansas State and La Tech again

Tigers are at the Cajuns southern miss is hosting Nichols now

That ballgame has classic letdown

Written all over it

All right, let's see I didn't see what Nichols's record is uh, Nichols is six and eight

So nonetheless

That's got a huge uh difference. We're going to go from probably

six to seven thousand probably to three or four all right

Um, let's see if Southern Miss can overcome

Being a little cocky little confident playing really well and just get the job done all right

I want to race beating Mississippi State, but it will

Be a bummer

To beat Mississippi State and then to lose the Nichols

So that's got classic letdown game at it right there

You would have rather just gone straight to the weekend series

Um

Ow, which who do they have this weekend? Let's see here

Let's see whose Southern Miss have I probably know that uh

Oh, it's North Alabama. Okay, so it's North Alabama and they are opening up the season uh the conference season

With Arkansas State in Jonesboro. So they're going to be tested again

Arkansas State is playing well so far uh the season and they can trade notes on so far beating up Louisiana Tech
