Ask the Bear
Maggie Devers
I want to know what the bear knows
What the ocean knows
what my heart knows.
Might it all be the same.
Does the bear not love?
Does the ocean not mourn
is my heart not wild?
But how to know what the bear knows
Maybe the salmon swimming in the stream will tell me.
Or children who have learned to war like a bear
Or the ghost of the hiker mauled by the bear
There must be truth in all they know
Or I could just ask the bear.
