Supreme court deals major loss to Trump by blocking National Guard deployment

On December 23, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court issued a rare and significant ruling against the Trump administration by refusing to block a lower court order that prevented the federalization and deployment of National Guard troops to Chicago. The unsigned order stated that the government failed to identify a clear source of authority allowing the military to execute laws in Illinois at this stage. Conservative Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Brett Kavanaugh joined the liberal wing in the majority.
