The Survivor Specialists are back.
And today we have our episode three predictions
and prop bet game.
I am joined by Joseph Dorowski,
the author of Survivor a Cultural History.
He had joined the podcast before.
I think with his sister Kate, right?
Sister Kate.
Yes, yeah, my sister Kate is the co-author of the book.
She is not able to be here because during the premiere
of season 50, she went into labor.
So, you know, it's crazy.
You think about all these people in the Survivor community,
how massive it is and all these people
who dedicate so much time,
you both write a book about it.
And somehow the timing worked out in that way
that she went into labor on the premiere
of the 50th season. That's incredible.
Yeah, she had texted me some of her thoughts
about the beginning and then I stopped
getting any text updates and I just assumed.
Was that one where like you went,
I don't know like how close you all live,
but it was like I'll go to the hospital at 11.05,
you know, like I'm not getting there
before the end of this episode, you know.
No, so we're in different times.
And so I'm always a little ahead of her.
So like when we talk about Survivor,
I always got to like not be the one to spoil anything.
So I wait for her to comment on it.
And so she just texted me some of her thoughts
about the beginning of the episode
and the, you know, the opening montage and all that.
And then like I said, just no more updates.
I'm like, okay, she's probably busy.
And sure enough, she was.
So yeah, Joseph and Kate were on the podcast
back in May of last year.
They put out this book survivor cultural history
part of a series that they've done.
And you know, we were talking about everything
throughout the first 47 seasons
and then talking or the 46 seasons
and talking all about like, you know,
the big moments and survivor history and everything like that.
And Joe, Joe was like, hey, I want to come on
and I want to talk about 50 at some point.
We got to make this happen.
And what are you thinking so far about the season?
I think largely it's been a delight
having these characters that we're already familiar with.
Or I guess players that we're already familiar with,
some of whom are characters.
It just makes an instant connection
with the content that we're getting compared to like
some seasons where there's this feeling out
and like we're getting to know who everyone is.
And sometimes like when you get a first boot
and a new player season is like,
I hardly got to know them.
And I didn't know, you know,
who had connections or anything.
And this one kind of comes with a lot of preconceived ideas
about who these players are going to be.
And so it just feels like we're able to hit the ground running.
It is a very different flavor to have that returning player
season compared to the new player season.
I think both are great.
We need both and I don't want them
to become overwhelmed on one versus the other.
But because it's been so long since we had a returning player season,
I think we were as a fandom like really ready
to see some of our favorite players back on the island
and some configurations of favorite players
that we haven't seen before.
Yeah, I mean, I think what's gonna be crazy coming to this episode
and we obviously have the tribes after the swap.
So we do know what's going to happen here.
But we, you know, we're getting coach and Colby
on the same tribe for the first time ever.
They played a season together.
They both made the Jerry portion of the game.
But coach was gone before the merge.
So the two of them and they've actually been on a tribe together.
Now we're gonna get them together on a tribe on this season.
Like this is, this is fun.
I'm having fun with it.
And I don't want them to go the route they did
after Heroes Villains were all of a sudden
season 22 had returned or season 23 had returned or season 25,
season 26, season 27.
It was too much, but this really proves it has been too long.
We have needed it and we have been missing it dear.
Yeah, and like just I felt a different energy
and like the pre season, again, because like it's not
see how much you can learn about someone
from a three sentence bio and a job description.
It's like, oh, you know, imagine what it's gonna be like
to see, you know, Devon's and Mike White
have a conversation or something like that.
Yeah.
Yeah, and in terms of ratings,
I mean, I'm sure CBS is looking at this.
Season 49's premiere was 4.03 million.
This season's premiere was 5.06.
So about a 25% increase in viewership one season
to the next, which does not happen in today's day
and age of media.
Like that is not what happens in today's TV.
So that has to be signal into them.
Like, look, people were ready for this.
Even we weren't that stoked about the cast.
Like some of these people were really excited
but then there are other people you're going,
why is that person there?
And still it went up by that much.
I mean, it just tells you and you got a lot of people
to pull from the new era from old school people
who are hungry to get back out there and play.
I feel like there's there's a lot of potential
that we could be seeing 52, 54, 56.
At least two of those three seasons
are going to be returning players seasons, I think.
Yeah, like you said,
there was definitely some head scratching decisions
about the cast where at least from the audience side
of it, not the production side of it,
it's like, well, why not this person instead of that person?
And yet, the evidence is there that audiences seem
to be embracing this or at least were excited for it.
To me, it almost feels like an ideal would be
that we, every five seasons is a returning player season
but that might be too regimented for CVS particularly
when they see this.
So if you could do four seasons of new players
and then a mix of favorite players from those four
and older seasons on the fifth season back,
that could be a lot of fun and keeping the game fresh
but I'm sure like you're saying that big of a jump,
you know, over a million more people watching this season
compared to last season,
it might be really hard for CVS to wait until season 55
to do another returning player season.
That's what I'm thinking too.
And yeah, I mean, you can almost treat it like the World Cup,
right?
Every four years, you know, the World Cup is coming.
You know, the Olympics is coming
and I feel like that's what needs to happen
but I also understand CBS is maybe worries of doing that
because then you get people trying to play to get their spot
on the next season to survive rather than playing.
You know, Angelina, who a lot of people have been disappointed
so far, we haven't really heard much from her.
One of the things that Mike Bloom said
and Dalton Ross have said was cut out of that first episode
was her trying to make a trade, you know,
because that's what she's known for.
She did the right's negotiations.
She was trying to make a negotiation
and I almost feel like that was cut out mainly
because Jeff doesn't like when people start playing characters.
He doesn't like that and that was something he always said
about Johnny Fair play back in the day
and you know, even though Rupert, you're like,
well, he's a huge character.
He's playing a character.
Rupert was always Rupert though.
He just is a character.
When people start leaning into the bit too much,
Jeff doesn't like that.
Yeah, like even coach who definitely has some aspects
that feel at times performative
as we're learning as he insists
that he's gonna be a new version.
It's like, no, this is just who coaches.
Like he is just, you know, himself and himself
is this larger than life kind of character.
Yeah, exactly.
What do you think about him almost drowning
and being saved by Jonathan Young
and the boat we've never seen that happen before?
Yeah, actually seeing the safety crew,
we don't get to see that peak behind the curtains very often.
I like that coach gave credit to Jonathan
for sending his life when that boat was also right there.
And 50 swimmers probably circle you down below.
Exactly.
Jonathan actually had almost nothing to do with it.
He just yelled on shore and it looks like Jonathan's
like standing in the water even though he's just crazy.
Jonathan really is.
He's a freak man.
You're seeing it even more.
I feel like on this season,
he's just, he's a different level.
He's just watching him dive into the water
from a platform compared to all the other players,
some of whom are doing competent dives.
It's just like, that's a different level
when Jonathan is the one diving into the water.
Now, some of the other players, it's comical.
They're dives.
Like Devon's had a lovely attempt
at a smooth dive off of the platform.
And then you just contrast that with Jonathan.
You're like, this is a different level
of competence in the water that's happening here.
Did you see Ceres off the really small platform?
It's just a belly flop.
Yeah, yeah.
Poor woman, she's played Survivor Six Times now
and diving's not there.
And I mean, even, I mean, Aubrey,
she took the swing and she just face planted.
And you just, you could feel the impact
that Aubrey had there and that she had to turn around
and go back and do it again.
But yeah, I feel like it's been delivering.
Is there anybody who's disappointed you
or surprised you positively so far?
I've been missing some players from the edit.
You know, like my preseason picked them at all
in part because I assume she'd come in
with a low threat level was actually Tiffity
and she has barely been on the screen at all, which, you know,
okay, are we in an Erica situation?
Or did I just make the wrong thing at the beginning of the season?
And so more from the edit, like I feel like
it hasn't been spread around enough.
Some of that is, you know, who goes to tribal,
of course that tribe is gonna get the bulk of the screen time.
That's just the way that the show has to be structured.
I want to say I've been like disappointed in how anyone
is like portraying themselves, like in some ways
it's just we're getting like what we expected from Joe
and from coach and like coach and Aussie
when they were making up like, oh, that's not as fun
and then immediately the, yeah, they had a fracture
in that relationship.
So there is still definitely fun to be had there.
I think it's interesting to see some people who feel like
they are trying to be different and then so quickly
it just kind of becomes who they are.
Like Rizzo has kind of like been, like Ebtron Flota
feels like from the Rizzo that we knew in 49.
Like he came in hot and it's like, okay, I gotta cool down
but then it feels like he's back already.
Like you can't just not be yourself.
I think when you're getting broken down
by the elements of the stress of the gameplay
and everything despite the cameras being there
and despite knowing that this is gonna be edited
and trying to, you know, put a certain face on,
you're still just yourself.
Yeah, and the thing now Rizzo is going out
and he's the only person from his tribe
that is going to be on this second tribe
because the way that it broke out, he's over there
and I'm pulling up the tribes now.
He's over there with four people from Kalo,
two people from Orange and then Rizzo, Solo.
So yeah, Rizzo's not gonna be able to hide who Rizzo is.
He's gonna have to just be Rizzo.
I mean, it worked for him in his last,
he's got in the fourth place.
He gets the final three as potential to win that.
And I mean, he won over Colby in about a day.
So maybe that's all it takes.
But it didn't feel like he also then lost
the hard workers on his tribe by the next day.
Yeah.
I know.
Rizzo, I had Sophie Valerity on the podcast this weekend
and I was like, so was Rizzo the hardest working person
on 49, is that gonna say a lot about 49
and she was like, he wasn't.
He wasn't.
So 49 is not all lazy.
Just letting him get away with it
because they were all getting away with it.
But hey, it's a different game.
And I mean, Q has an old school mentality, Joe is an old
school mentality, Jonathan has an old school mentality.
But mostly other new era players,
like that stuff's just not as important to them
as it was back in the day.
And it really isn't something that really ever gets people
in trouble.
Yeah.
And it's interesting.
I think the move is always to kind of like follow
what the majority is.
Like if the majority wants to sit around the campfire
and talk, you should be sitting around the campfire
talking not like angrily dragging in firewood.
But if the majority is, which it seemed like on Rizzo's
first tribe, the majority was kind of out there gathering
food and fire and he chose not to,
that stood out to the majority.
And so you got to read the room or read the tribe, I guess.
Yeah.
But on what you should be doing on that,
I think in part because of the shorter gameplay,
like it does seem like the new era is far less invested
in building a good shelter than some earlier eras,
where like it's a big difference to have a couple,
you know, that many days on the sand versus on bamboo.
And if you feel like you're going to be there,
you might want to set up that bamboo.
But you know, with all the, not knowing if you're going
to be on the same beach, like the game moves so fast
that you're not even on your starting beach for as long
as you were in the original era.
So like why take the time to invest in setting that up
when you don't know which beach is going to end on
or anything like that?
Yeah, I mean, we had the biggest season cast wise
in the history of the show at 24.
And they're swapping before they even get the 20.
Like we're at 21 and they're swapping already.
I mean, obviously we end up losing Kyle because of the injury.
But it makes me wonder were they always planning
that episode three was going to be a swap?
Were they maybe considering that if Kyle wasn't going
to get pulled, would we have seen both Savannah
and Jenna be voted out in episode one and then episode two
would have been something totally different?
I wonder what they were thinking with that
because it's like you're saying, I think we're on day seven.
If that and we're already swapping, so what's the point?
And then you get Australian survivor,
which is going on at the same time.
They're airing it to make us podcasters' lives
really, really brutal.
They're airing it now.
It's 45 days in one of the biggest conversations
of the last couple episodes about the shelter
and how they want a strong shelter.
And how it's got to be good because it's 45 days.
I mean, almost doubled the length of this season.
So yeah, it's fun though.
It's fun watching Colby and Stephanie
and some of these older players get involved in this.
And then you see Colby who is starting to realize,
okay, this doesn't matter as much.
Let's get a little crazy.
Let's start going through bags.
I'm going to be okay with that stuff this time.
I've been having fun watching the old school
that there's adapt to what's taking place.
Yeah, as far as the tribes up,
a part of me is wondering like once they had the same tribe
lose two challenges in a row and go to tribal
and they're like, okay, we can't have another disaster tribe
because that's been too much of a pattern of late.
So we got to swap this up right away.
Or like you said, was it always we're going to do?
Like I expected actually more double elimination episodes
that like with three tribes,
only one tribe is going to win immunity
and the other two are going to go vote somewhat out
just because there's so many people.
And so I'm still waiting for those episodes
to like pick up the pace of the eliminations.
It's going to have to happen here in the season.
Yeah, I mean, the finale is May 20th.
We're doing this podcast on March 10th.
There are 21 people left in the game.
There's still more players than ever before.
Yeah, like and if they don't do a double boot this week,
we're going in episode four with a starting season, you know,
and I'm curious what it's going to look like.
We don't know if this is a double boot or not.
Some people were saying that in some of the press photos
they put out it looks like there was only one idol,
but then it looked like it was the silver idol.
So it was the silver idol.
Why would you get rid of the golden one?
If there's only going to be one,
gold normally means first,
silver normally means seconds.
You think they get rid of the silver one,
but I'm not sure.
So I don't know what we're going into it this week.
I would think though, you got to start looking at double boots.
If it's not this week, I would assume the next three or four episodes
are going to have them because I don't want post-murts
to just be, you know, like survivor Fiji, Michelle Yee,
open it up and going, oh, man, like are not Michelle.
I'm thinking of a cook islands when they open it up.
I don't want that situation of, oh, why did we pull this open?
So yeah, I feel like I feel like this is going to be,
it's got to start moving quicker,
but I don't know if it's happening this week
or if it's going to start happening next week.
Yeah, I'm with the three tribe format.
It's really easy to get a double elimination
and not, you know, just to announce at the very beginning
of the challenge, like there's only one immunity
and then everyone knows what the stakes are.
It doesn't have to be the shocking twist of, you know,
every tribe's voting so on out, which they do sometimes.
And you're really just playing for like a meal at tribal
or something like that.
Yeah, very easily just say, only one tribe safe.
Everyone else, you're going to have to go vote someone else out.
Yeah, I know and they did it the first episode ever
of the new era, they did that.
And I feel like they've only done it maybe one time since,
which just blows my mind, I don't understand it.
That's why you have three tribes.
It's so easy to do this.
I mean, we did 82 episodes about survivor 50
before the season started, you know, from the time last,
I don't even know last April, March, whatever.
When you knew 50 was coming, we did 82 episodes
and all we talked about was we're going to have double boots
the entire pre-merge.
And so far, if Kyle didn't get hurt, we wouldn't have had any.
So we'll see how that goes.
But we, uh, we're going to be making predictions here.
I got the 10 questions up for everybody who's playing along.
So if you're playing along in the profit game, uh, the winner gets
a custom pop Funko from Todd Herzog.
Right now, the leader is Sam with nine points.
We got Billy G with eight points four.
And then a bunch of people with seven.
I'm not going to go through all of them.
A bunch of people with seven, I have six.
So I'm right in there.
That makes me feel better.
Blake was feeling really good about themselves for all of you
who pay attention to digging deeper.
Blake was bragging after episode number one about how great he's doing.
I can't find Blake's name on this page.
Like I have to scroll so far.
There he is.
He's down at 78th place.
So that tells you how Blake's doing.
But we have a lot of people who signed up for it.
10 questions again.
I changed the wording on some of them to make it clearer last week.
I got in trouble because I said,
we'll be the first person shown holding the tribal immunity
idol.
And I meant after the challenge.
But then I realized like Stephanie LaGrosa comes walking in with it.
And it's like, well, she's technically holding it.
So I ended up doing two there, but I'm trying to clean it up.
First time we've ever done it as a weekly podcast.
Everybody bear with me as we go through this.
We have the new tribes.
So we'll, you know, we'll talk a little bit about that.
I know we have, we already talked about the one with Rizzo.
I'll just read these off real quick.
So everybody can play along.
I know Joe, you have it in front of you.
But the new orange tribe is going to be Charlie D.
Jonathan Camilla, Rizzo Devins and Ciri.
The new green tribe is going to be Aubrey, Chrissy, coach,
Colby, Genevieve, Joe and Tiffany.
And the new purple tribe, Angelina, Christian, Mike White,
all three diverse, Goliath, Emily, Ozzy, Stephanie and Q.
So those are the three tribes.
We got our questions.
What stands out to you, though, before we get into the questions
about those three tribes?
Is there one that stands out to you as they're going to dominate?
They're going to lose.
We don't know if there's going to be, you know, only one tribe winning.
Is there one if there is just one tribe winning
that you're saying, wow, they have a huge advantage?
How are you feeling about the way this broke down?
I think the most interesting thing may be the,
the David versus the Goliath, you know, Trio being back together,
but then also a whole bunch, you know, from Christian's tribe
being there because he got Christian and Ozzy.
All right, and, you know, still together.
So like, what is that dynamic?
Like, who's going to be pulling?
Like, are those three going to get back together?
And who's going to be pulling from their, their starting tribes,
you know, with them in there?
So to me, that's like the, and that's part of the joy
of the returning player season is that that pre-existing relationship
is so clear to us as, as viewers.
What's going to be like when those three get back together?
And what will the dynamics on that tribe end up being?
Yeah.
And I mean, I'm like the biggest Colby fan in the world.
I've been talking about Colby non-stop since I found out
he was going to be on the season.
I mean, look, if Colby gets swapscred, that stinks
because he looked like he was in a really good spot on his tribe.
He doesn't have a vote because of stupid twists
and everything like that.
But at the same time, I'm getting to watch Colby and coach
be on the same tribe.
I'm getting to watch Colby get out there with Joe Hunter,
who I think he's actually going to play pretty close with.
Like, I think that two of them kind of have similar mindsets.
So, you know, getting to see these different interactions,
getting to see Genevieve on an island with coach.
Like, dad's going to be interesting.
So, I can't fault the show for saying, look, 21 people,
it's a returning player season.
Let's mix this up as much as we can
to get as many different people playing together.
So, we don't have a situation of, you know,
heroes versus villains where Stephanie LaGrosa
never played with Parvati shallow.
You know, like we now are getting more people playing together.
Yeah, and also like, like I said,
there's one tribe that seems to be struggling a little bit more
in that starting.
And if you don't do it now,
you've got to wait till you're down to 18 players.
So, that might be like, okay, we better get this mix now.
In part, so we do see the blend that you're identifying.
Like, we want to see these characters
have conversations with each other.
And if we do have a disaster tribe that just keeps losing,
we don't want to wait till 18, you know, to do that.
Yeah, I mean, because then also you are in a situation
where like, again, let's say that you are doing
double boots the entire time.
If they start doing double boots and that one tribe
just can't win, now they're down to three people.
You do a swap or four people.
You do a swap at 18.
Now you still have to do double boots.
Those people are easy picking because it's going to be very hard
for all of them to benefit from a tribe swap.
So, yeah, I feel like this is the right time.
I'm not mad about it.
You know, I'm happy that they that they're choosing to do it.
And I'm excited to see what the dynamics are going to look like.
Yeah, I think it'll be a lot of fun.
And again, it's easier like if it was a new player season
and you did a tribe swap after two episodes,
it would still be, I think some of the like,
I don't know who these people are yet.
Especially for the winning tribes,
like we barely see them unless we see a little montage
of them enjoying a reward.
But at this point, we know who all these people are
and we can just be excited about the new mix.
Yeah, exactly.
So that's where I keep wandering to myself.
I'm like, are they going to do 24 people again after this?
Because you think about all stars first time they ever went to 18.
And then they did it again for season nine.
And then they did 20 for season 10.
They kept wanting to do a lot of players.
So I'm left wondering, will they go with 24 again?
But watching Australian Survivor,
they generally start with 24.
You know, you start with 24, it's a lot of people.
And I don't know them.
So it's hard to track all of them.
So at least here with these 24,
we can, we can, we really know everybody out there.
I don't know if you can do 24 with all newbies
and just have hour and a half episodes.
I don't know if it's enough.
Yeah, I think it makes a lot of sense
for that returning player season.
And if we are going to have that happen more frequently,
maybe those, those casts are 24.
And then when it's a new player season,
we're back to the 18 or 20 with two 10 tribe,
the 10 player tribes.
Yeah, which they've done normally about five or six of those
people are totally irrelevant to the edit, you know,
they just get completely cut out.
So we'll see.
But hopefully I don't cut out again, everybody.
So I apologize if I do, like I said, I sent it to my phone.
So Joe, if you need to just hold down the,
if you need to hold down the podcast while I cut out,
you just, you just start talking.
Okay, I was worried it was me that was cutting out.
Well, I thought at first and then I was like,
no, that was totally me because I started getting
the spinning wheel of death and once that happens,
we're doomed.
Um, all right.
So here's, here's our first one.
This is so random.
And I want some of these to be really random
because how could you possibly cheat at this, right?
And that's what it's all about.
Name one of the first three people, Jeff will name
when introducing the new tribes to the audience.
So what I mean by this is,
then the tribes have been announced that Jeff always goes,
all right, the new seal of tribe includes,
the new Kahlo tribe includes.
So not only are you having to pick which tribe
he's going to talk about first,
you have to pick which people,
one of the first three people that he talks about on that tribe.
So Joel, I'll, I'll go over to you first.
Where are you going?
I am going to go with,
because Jeff seems to really be enjoying saying this
that he's going to say Hubecki first.
He has shifted from Christian to Hubecki this season
and, and you know, Christian is just a great narrator.
So it's a natural one for him to say,
like, Christian, what do you think of your new tribe?
And immediately get the storyline
about the David versus Goliaths being reunited,
getting that addressed right away.
So that's going to be my pick there.
I like that.
I, I, I could see that,
and I could see him going with a bigger name,
but I'm going, I'm going random here,
and, and there's a little science to this.
So the way that they're standing in the preview,
orange is all the way to the left.
Green is in the middle and purple's on the right.
So I don't know if Jeff's going to start on the right
or the left, but he's not going to start in the middle.
And then if he does start on the left,
which that's how I would read,
I'd go left to right.
The tribe on the left is the one with four Colo members.
And so I think what Jeff is going to do,
this is the science now of doing the prop that game, right?
I think what Jeff is going to do is he's going to say
New Silla consists of four Colo,
Jonathan, Charlie, Camilla, and Dee.
Or he'll say Dee, Camilla, Charlie, and Jonathan.
And the reason for that is because that's
Jonathan and Dee are on the ends,
but Camilla and Charlie are in the middle.
So I think he'll intro those Colo people.
So I got to go with either Charlie or Camilla.
That's who I'm more confident in.
I'm going to go with Charlie here
because I have Camilla for something else.
So yes, that is how ridiculous I'm getting
into the weeds on this, because I want to win this game
or at least be like from digging deeper.
So I'm going to go ahead and I'm going to say
Charlie for this one.
I like that analysis.
Use all the data that we have as you're looking at this.
Yeah, I mean, if you're going to play this game,
you got to take it ridiculously seriously.
That's how I envision it.
So all right.
So that's the first one.
Again, only the first tribe.
This isn't one of the first three people from each tribe.
It's just the first.
He's got to be one of the first three people
he mentions after he's saying the new blank tribe.
Here we go.
Next one, who will Jeff compliment in a challenge?
And this one I'm classifying, like catching up counts
as a compliment, or catching up doesn't count as a compliment.
Like, oh, they're catching up.
But flying through or doing a great job,
like you know what a compliment is, right?
So I'm going with like catching up is an compliment
that's a fact, but flying through the nods,
that's Jeff trying to be like, whoa, they're killing it.
So who do you think Jeff is going to compliment in a challenge?
So I was of two minds on this kind of like with you're being
a little too scientific about it.
And like thinking through all the mechanics,
Jeff loves to compliment the hypermascula men
who are having a great moment.
But then he will also really highlight any older women
who he thinks are doing very well in a challenge.
And this season, like everyone kind of,
I think it just my counts as an older person.
Yeah, because we have, especially now
that, so that is gone.
We got Rizzo, is that really one of the 20s left, right?
I think D and Rizzo are the only two.
Okay, D also, yeah, that another makes sense.
So I'm going to go with Chrissy on this.
I'm going to choose Chrissy Hothbeck as someone that Jeff
is going to just notice is doing particularly well
at a physical part of a challenge.
He's going to only want to make sure that everyone
knows that that is happening.
Yeah, I think the other thing that helps too
is if Chrissy tends to do puzzles,
if Chrissy ends up on a puzzle,
he's definitely going to be like,
Chrissy doing this because Chrissy's not going to do bad
at the puzzle.
She never had.
Yeah.
Well, I went with the hypermascula.
I went, John.
I just, I don't think we're getting water
on this episode.
It looks like the challenges land-based,
or at least from the edit,
or from the preview, it looks like it's land-based.
Now, there could be two challenges.
I don't know.
But, man, like Jeff just loves to be like Colby,
dragging that snake, Colby and Steph,
doing everything they can.
And then Jonathan, like, wow,
he held his breath the whole time.
What was it that he said in the last episode?
Jonathan still hasn't come up for air.
And it was like, Jonathan had been under the water
just as long as Savannah had been under the water.
But Jonathan got a really, really massive compliment there.
So, I'm going to go with Jonathan.
And how are you feeling?
Were you a fan of Jonathan coming in?
Were you surprised he was on the season?
And how are you feeling about Jonathan so far?
I was not surprised he was on the season
because I don't think there's ever been a more obvious moment
where a player secured their returning spot
than when he dragged his entire tribe through the ocean
and that one challenge.
Like, as that was happening, like I said to my kids,
I'm like, he's going to be back on another season.
Like, it doesn't matter what happens the rest of this season.
Jonathan is going to be back.
So, no surprise that he's back.
We haven't really seen, had to see too much in terms of strategy,
which is obviously the area that you want to see
in the most growth from Jonathan.
His physical prowess is still like,
he is checking that box.
No doubt that he is the biggest, strongest person on the island,
which is what brought him back.
But is there going to be a different part of his game
that maybe wasn't quite as strong of the first time around?
Yeah.
Yeah, I've been impressed.
They've been showing him more than I thought.
He hasn't gone to tribal.
And he's got nobody else from his original season.
So I thought that he would kind of be disregarded.
He's just a big challenge guy.
But I've been enjoying Jonathan more than I thought I would
because I liked him on his first season.
But like you said, it was a moment that,
how can you replicate that?
And also, it's not exactly the best TV
from what survivor viewers want to see nowadays.
So I was worried he was going to come out
and kind of be invisible.
That just has not been the case at all for Jonathan.
So good for him.
Yeah, I was just checking.
It looks like he had three confessionals on both episodes.
So he's nitty-nitty, right?
Just enough of a presence that we're all,
we all remember he's there.
And what's crazy is that is the tribe
where there hasn't been a lot of confessionals.
Like Coach has 10, but he got eight of those
because he went on that journey in episode one.
Mike White has seven, but he has eight,
but he has a bunch of those
because he went on that journey in episode one.
Jonathan hasn't done any of that stuff.
So, you know, you get to refills the best
than ever when sitting over there on a tribe
that's going to travel twice
and she's been a focal point of everything.
She's got eight confessionals.
Jonathan has six.
Like, what is going on?
So that's the weird world that we are living in.

Hey, Sal.
Hank, what's going on?
We haven't worked a case in years.
I just bought my car at Carvada and it was so easy, too easy.
Think something's up.
Shoot, tell me.
They got thousands of options.
Found a great car, a great price.
And it got delivered the next day.
It sounds like Carvada just makes it easy to buy your car, Hank.
Yeah, you're right.
Case closed.

All right, so I feel like I'm choosing a bad time
to bring this one up.
I haven't brought this one in yet.
But I should have earlier.
And I'm worried that this one's just going to be mentioned by Jeff.
But we're going to try it.
If it doesn't work this week, next week it'll be happening again.
Who will say the episode title?
Now, the episode title is, did you vote for a swap?
Yeah, and there's a few people who you can kind of hear that phrase
coming out of their mouths like in an exasperated way.
Like, you know, if someone's complaining about it
or someone's too happy about it, like, did you vote for this?
Or they're not happy about how things have gone.
And so it was more like, who could I hear saying that?
It's kind of what I was thinking.
And so I'm going to say Q, because I could definitely
hear that sentence coming out of Q's mail.
I could too.
An exasperated Q saying, did you vote for a swap,
like yelling at the camera?
That makes a lot of sense.
In confession.
I was trying to think who would say it
in confessional as a, you know, Jeff might say this,
but why would Jeff be saying it to the players?
I almost really, he's going to say, it's a swap.
And then you're going to get a confessional of somebody
saying, did you vote for a swap?
Like, come on, or you're going to get one of the players asking
another.
And the one I could see doing it because it's going to be breaking news.
We got a tribe swap is Rick Devins.
And so I'm going to go with Devins for this one.
I like the Q pick a lot because Q is always great
for a confessional complaining about something.
And I do feel like complaining about the tribe swap
makes sense.
And that could be great where he's like, cancel Christmas
if you vote it for a tribe swap, you know?
But I feel like Devins with the whole breaking news thing.
And I could even see Devins calling it out to somebody
like on his tribe and like, did you vote for a swap really?
Because I think somebody had said that to him in episode one.
I think Devins was involved in a, what did you vote for type
conversation?
Mm-hmm.
I can even be a meta one where he's talking to the fans of like,
hey, like this is too early for a swap.
Fans, did you vote for this one?
Mm-hmm.
Yeah, I completely agree.
So I'm going Devins.
I like the Q pick.
I know a lot of people are saying Jeff,
Jeff isn't an option for this game everybody.
You have to pick a player.
So if Jeff is the one who says it,
it's just nobody gets vote.
Nobody gets the points.
So we'll see what happens there.
The two names I've written down were Q and Devins.
So I think we were kind of on the same path.
When we started going, I was like, I don't have a backup.
So we better, if he says Devins,
we're just going with Devins here.
All right, so next one, who will have their mouth blurred?
So this has been happening quite a bit on this season.
We've had a lot of potty mouths in a way that we haven't,
I don't feel like in recent seasons,
but I think there was like five or six people
who had it last week, which I was really surprised at.
So who do you think is going to have their mouth blurred?
Okay, here's the thing.
I had written down a few that I thought based on the season
so far that would.
But then as I was trying to like just double check everything,
I looked at the preview for the next episode,
that played at the end of the episode,
and there's a player who has their mouth blurred in the preview.
So with that little bit of research,
I have my pick, and that is going to be Christian.
Okay, wow, okay.
So look, I say it all the time, if you're playing in this game,
there's a lot of people who are going to play in this game,
we don't listen to the podcast.
If you're playing in this game,
and you just made it to 32 minutes into the podcast,
you just got to give me, right?
I did this last week with Who Will Cry and Genevieve
Cryed in the promo that they put out.
We saved it for the last question.
If you're playing along, if you're watching the previews,
but if you're not listening to the podcast
and you missed the preview,
now you don't know.
I mean, I'll go with somebody else
because I didn't see this preview.
This is a lack of research on my end.
I was too busy trying to figure out
if what do you call it, Charlie or Camilla
was going to be mentioned as one of the first three names.
But I do like that, that you found that,
and good for anybody, there's the 100 people
who are listening right now.
You win, congratulations.
And I did not have Christian on my list,
when I originally shot it down a couple of names.
Yeah, I mean, he's had, now he'll have his mouth blurred
and us, everything else blurred, too.
He's had quite a go of it.
What's your feeling on Christian?
Is Christian getting a winner at it?
Did they make a man who pooped his pants?
Look good on TV.
Okay, I think, first of all,
if he had not had wonderful self-deprecating professionals,
I don't think they would have shown the sequence.
The fact that he embraced it and talked about it,
I think that gave the editors license.
But also, I thought it was really interesting
that he did not get the dodo music
when that sequence was happening.
Somehow, he was able to, like you said,
like, have some dignity about it,
or at least some self-deprecation,
but it was like, he's making fun of himself,
not the show making fun of him.
Whereas, like, when they show Chrissy,
being nice to other players,
they gave her the dodo music.
And so, like, they obviously have this,
where they're ready to make a player look a certain way,
no matter what they're showing,
and the fact that they didn't make it,
you know, that he's the butt of the joke from production.
To me, he says, like, yeah,
I could seem still having a chance to win for sure.
Yeah, a lot of people were commenting,
because we had Carl on the podcast,
and Carl played Dave vs. Goliath with Christian.
You know, obviously, they were on the original
starting David's tribe together,
and Carl was, Carl was giving him a hard time.
He was like, look, man, you just went out there,
you just pooped your pants on national TV.
And they're like, a lot of people were commenting,
either on that, or they were commenting,
and I saw a couple Instagram videos,
saying, why do they have to show this?
Like, poor Christian.
I think it's because Christians ain't on it.
I think you nailed it there, where,
not only is Christian in on it,
but it also set up the final act of that episode,
which was Christian being a buffoon,
but he was purposefully being a buffoon.
And everybody has their guard,
so let down around Christian.
I feel like, you know, 99.9% of people poop their pants on TV,
they look really bad.
Christian Hubecki comes out of this,
I mean, he's like Andy Dufrein here from Shawshank.
Like, it's crazy how he's coming out,
smelling like roses, after all.
Yeah, like I was thinking, like,
oh, he's gonna be in class tomorrow,
and his students are gonna talk about this,
but he kind of took away any way to make him feel bad
about it with his professionals.
And I absolutely, if you had asked production not to,
or he hadn't given those types of professionals,
I don't think it's in the episode at all.
I completely agree.
And yeah, it's, I always,
there's like one of my favorite lines from TV shows
in Game of Thrones when Tyrion and Jon Snow
have their first interaction together,
and they're insulting each other.
And Tyrion's like, wow, original.
And Jon Snow is like really offended.
And he's like, he got to wear it like armor.
Like whatever, whatever it is that they can get at,
wear it like armor,
because then they can't get it to you anymore.
And I feel like that's what Christian does,
such a good job of with his self-deprecation and stuff.
You really, like, you could go up to Christian,
one of his students could go up and be like,
I can't believe you did this.
And Christian's gonna be like, yeah, did.
I was on TV too.
How's that?
I put myself out twice, how many times you've played it?
Like, I feel like he's golden, it doesn't matter.
He's taking it and trying.
So, all right, well, so you went with Christian,
I didn't even say mine.
I'm gonna go with Q.
So, now that I know that Christian's there,
but I'm gonna punish myself for not doing the research.
So, I'm gonna go with Q because, you know,
Q gets the tribe swap here where he doesn't have a vote.
And he's on the tribe with three David versus Goliaths
and then three others.
And I could see him having a confessional
where he drops a curse word
because he's like, if I had my vote, we would be good.
So, I think that Q is gonna end up having his mouth work.
I think that's a good one.
He, like, out of the swap, he, I don't feel good
about his position, especially without having his vote.
Completely agree.
I feel like, yeah, it's a nightmare situation
because Christian Emily Ozzy, all kind of close.
Angelina and Q were not close.
Angelina can easily get with Mike and Christian.
It kind of leaves Q and Stephanie on the outs.
Those are the two from this tribe
that I'm feeling really bad about.
And I mean, Stephanie doing nothing last week.
Like, we didn't hear from her at all.
I am concerned that this could potentially be the end
of Stephanie, but I feel worse for Q at this point.
Yeah.
And this is one of those examples where you can kind of lose
in the shuffle of all the advantages
and all the disadvantages that happened.
But like, as soon as I remembered,
like, oh, he doesn't even have a vote.
That's one.
Oh, if they go to the tribal, that would be my pick
to be voted out, but who knows who would go to tribal.
Yeah, well, we're about to try to find out
because my question to you is,
who will be the first person Jeff asks
a question at tribal council?
So I'll also preface this, if there's two tribals,
this is only for the first tribal council
because it's the first person being asked.
So if there are two tribals, I mean, we don't know
if it's one tribe going, we don't know if it's two tribes
going, somebody in our comments on Sunday said,
it's going to be the game changers thing
where two tribes are going to go together
and one person is going to be voted out,
which I hope is not the case
because they ruined game changers with that twist.
So I guess this will reveal which tribe you do think
is going, who do you think will be the first person Jeff
asked a question at tribal?
Yeah, I mean, I have one person for each tribe here,
so now I just got to finally make my pick
of which one I think.
Well, why don't you go to the go-off room?
Which three do you have, and then why don't you walk us
through why you're picking the one you aren't?
Okay, so I had a coach for his tribe
just because he's such a go-to voice for survivor
and prox loves to get a good sound bite
from coach and to give him a place to perform that sound bite
just feels like a natural move for a host of the show.
Even if the sound bite will make no sense
like his enemy, what was the phrase that he is?
My adversary, my enemy, feels like the same thing.
Yeah, it was your today's adversaries tomorrow's enemy,
today's enemies tomorrow's adversary or something.
It was like, sure.
Yogi Barry, let's move on.
So, yeah.
And then I had D for that tribe
just feeling like she hasn't had as much to do on the show yet,
but also like she does have that relationship
with Jeff from the On Fire podcast.
And then Mike White as, I mean,
I already said that Christian's a great narrator
but Mike White is also the consummate storyteller
and I could easily see Jeff asking Mike
to kind of sum up where things are at for the tribe
and trusting Mike's storytelling
and producing instincts to give him the sound bite
that sets the stage for what comes next.
I mean, I love two of those three were on my short list.
I didn't end up going with Mike White,
but he was the one that I crossed out at the end
to go with the other person mainly just because I didn't
end up going with Mike White going to tribal,
but of those three, who are you locking in?
Okay, I'm looking over the tribes.
All right, any tribe with Jonathan,
you kind of say they're gonna have a physical advantage.
I mean, you got Christian is gonna be solid on a puzzle
but then so is Aubrey and Chrissy.
I'm gonna go with Mike White,
but I don't feel like great about it,
but that's gonna be my take here.
Yeah, I ended up, I was between Mike White
and I was between somebody on that new collar tribe.
I agree with you, Jonathan's on a tribe, great.
You just hang out, I know that they did lose a challenge
in season 42, like I get it,
but you can just hang out and know that you're probably
gonna win, especially if you just need to be top two.
I'm gonna put my money on Jonathan almost every time.
There is a tribe here that is strong and theory.
They're getting a little old
and I am gonna go with that coach Colby,
Chrissy, Joe tribe.
And I'm gonna go with Colby here
and my reason is Jeff really locked in on Jenna
in episode one and obviously Jenna was gonna go home
but he went back to the person of you were here
at the second tribal council ever.
Let's do a montage of BB Anderson.
Like what are we doing?
Like crazy.
And so when I watch that happen,
I say to myself, Colby, even though Kyle's gone,
hasn't gone to a tribal yet.
And I think that in coach hasn't either,
so I do think the coach one is a good pick,
but I could see Jeff going to Colby first
because it's like you have in place
in heroes versus villains.
You were here on the second season,
like how do you feel about this?
And I could see him going to Colby early
so they can do maybe a quick montage
of Kel being voted out of survivor or something absurd.
But yeah, I'm gonna go with Colby,
although I feel like coach and Mike White
both make a lot of sense.
I could see Dee, but I still see that tribal losing.
So I'm gonna go with Colby here for this one.
And hopefully that means he stays around.
Unlike Jenna.
All right.
All right, so now we get into the confessional situation.
So you had brought up confessions earlier.
So this next one is gonna be
who will have zero confessions this week?
And last week, Angelina, Stephanie,
Chrissy, Camilla, and Tiffany all had zero.
Where you going this week?
Yeah, which, okay, like is that a pattern?
Are they gonna continue to be under edited
or is there gonna be a course correction
and each one of them is gonna get a confessional?
But I'm gonna kind of say it's probably gonna be a pattern
and the tribe that wins isn't gonna have
as much screen time.
So I'm gonna go with Camilla,
still not getting a confessional
because her tribe with Jonathan,
well, I'm gonna predict that they'll do well.
Like you said, if there's two that are safe,
I think for sure they would probably be a safe tribe
and she just hasn't been at the center of any storylines yet.
Always a chance of that changes
and I'm completely wrong.
Yeah, I got Camilla as well.
I feel like she's in a really bad spot over there.
I mean, look, Angelina, so Stephanie, I feel like
people get confessional this week
because she's kind of on the outs, like we already said,
Angelina's gonna get confessional.
She's back with her David versus Goliath people.
I think it'd be crazy if we don't hear anything from there.
Tiffany, I'm not so sure about.
I picked Tiffany last week.
I could probably pick Tiffany again,
but then that's also the tribe
that I think is gonna go to tribal council.
So if they are gonna go to tribal council,
I'm gonna say Tiffany gets at least one for going to tribal
and then when I look at Chrissy, same situation,
she's on the tribe that I think will go to tribal.
So I'm gonna go with Camilla
because the other thing that happened
is the only story that Camilla's had so far is
I don't wanna play with honor and integrity
and then I got D and I got Tiffany.
But then D last week got the confessional
and I could see D kind of being the narrator
of their relationship for as long as it's going to last.
And that's not an honor and integrity tribe,
but if they don't go to tribal,
we're not gonna hear Camilla say,
I'm so excited I finally get to play survivor
for the first time until they do go to tribal.
So I'm gonna agree with you,
I think Camilla's the one who's left out this.
Yeah.
So okay, I was a little uncertain on that pick,
but now we should get very supportive of it.
And it's not happening.
Although last week, I'd cried from survivor analytics
on we both picked Tiffany and Tiffany didn't get one.
So we'll say, okay.
Yeah, going the complete opposite direction now.
Who will have the most confessional's this week?
Yeah, and this is where you kinda wanna go
with the tribe that's going to tribal.
And so now my debate is like,
do I wanna lock in?
I already said the new Vatu is,
cause I chose Mike White to be the first one to answer.
Or do I spread that around and try and become,
a point by choosing a different tribe.
If you're trying to game the system here.
Oh, I think I'm gonna try and spread it around actually.
I'm gonna choose Aubrey.
It seemed like in the preview for the episode,
she was getting a little discussion
and she's been able to,
she has an idol.
So if it does happen to be her tribe,
it'll definitely be some confessional
about what will happen with that idol.
She is, when you asked her earlier,
is there anyone you've been disappointed in?
Her energy has just felt a little off.
And so if there's any player who maybe hasn't
like lived up to the expectations I would have had
coming in, it might be Aubrey though.
I think the speculation at least is that
I have not heard this confirmed at all
is that she was an alternate that got pulled in
at the last minute when they decided to go up to 24.
I've heard that speculated because I think Devins
confirmed in his pregame interview that he was an alternate
that wasn't expected to go on when he got told.
And so who would be the other, maybe it was Aubrey.
And so maybe she had assumed I'm not going in
and was kind of like trying to shut down any hopes
or not really engaging with the idea of being on Survivor
and some of that odd energy is still caring forward.
But I'm gonna pick Aubrey for that one.
I, yeah, we were talking about this the other day.
I knew that Devins was the one who confirmed
he was an alternate, which to me isn't saying
because Rick Devins is always going to deliver
what Rick Devins is currently delivering.
Like he is always going to be TV gold.
Now having to consider not putting him on
or say, oh, well, we have 20 better play, no you don't.
Like if you're doing it all star season
and Rick Devins hasn't been exhausted,
Rick Devins is your new coach.
Like he should be on as many as you can.
And I think Christian now falls into that as well.
And so when I heard that, I couldn't remember
who the woman was or I hadn't figured it out
but I think you're probably right
because I do know, look, I was following along early on
with like the speculation of who's getting cast
and what's gonna happen.
And I know there was a season 32 woman floating around
and a lot of people thought it was gonna be Sydney.
And then what ended up happening was like the 32 woman fell off
and then all of a sudden the day before
they're about to announce the cast, it's, hey Aubrey's here.
She was a name that really wasn't in the mix.
It didn't feel like when they were going through
that speculation at all.
So yeah, I mean, I could see that.
I just feel like Aubrey has,
she's just had a tough run on Survivor.
It's been a brutal from the start.
Like she loses to Michelle.
Everybody's saying she should have won.
She comes back and she's pretty much invisible.
She comes back and gets just played with an idol
in her pocket by Victoria.
Like it's been a rough run for Aubrey.
And it does feel like she's beat down out there right now.
Yeah.
And even like her first season, yes, she loses Michelle
but also how wrong does, like that wasn't a fun season.
It feels like, you know, for the environment
or even like the tone of the gameplay.
And so that's her start.
And then yeah, it's been rough.
But like she did have, like she was a bright spot in Cowron.
And you haven't felt that same energy in this season.
Not at all.
No, it feels like she's got the edge of extinction hang over.
And it feels like it's eating her.
And that's why I think Aubrey actually
high hopes for her because like at least in this episode
I don't have high hopes for her overall in the season.
I mean, maybe if she gets her footing, like she didn't
come around, but I just, I don't see it right now.
But if I'm looking at Aubrey in this episode,
having the idol, there is no way she gets voted out
with an idol again after how badly she got due.
Like I've met Aubrey.
She's a very smart person.
She is, she's been thinking about this.
I know she's been thinking about this.
And I feel like this is something that she's just saying.
Look, even if I end up being a fool
who plays the idol for no reason,
at least I'm gonna have a better taste in my mouth
than I did leaving edge of extinction
because that season really was brutal for her.
I know it was.
So I'm going with that same tribe.
And that's the tribe that I think is going in.
I'm gonna put all my eggs in one basket.
I correctly called this one last week.
It was Christian who had the most confessionals
the week before it was Ozzy who blew everybody away.
But I'm gonna finally expect them to give the proper edit
to this man and I'm gonna go with coach.
I think that that tribe, if they lose,
coach is gonna have a whole bunch of things to say.
He always does.
And I feel like, you know, the coach Colby stories there,
coach is gonna narrate over Chrissy and Tiffany.
If that happens, I could see coach
having a lot of confessionals about being with Joe.
We're the same guy.
Like he's just bigger than me,
but honor and integrity, like that's us.
So I'm gonna go with coach for this one.
Yeah, I think that's a great,
I mean, yes, with confessional counts,
coach is always a safe guess.
Yeah, it went in doubt.
If you're not sure which tribe's gonna go,
tribe's off happens, coach is gonna get in there.
I mean, coach only had two last week though.
Again, going back to the Jonathan weird edit,
Jonathan had three coach had two.
What world are we living in?
Like what is happening?
All right.
Yeah.
And the coaches was more memorable than Jonathan's.
That is true.
That is true.
Poor guy.
You know, we wonder if we can still do this.
You got it, coach.
You're entertaining us, that's all that matters.
So we got three questions left.
The next one is what player will participate in a puzzle?
I decided just not to overthink this
and I'm just gonna say Christian.
Just, you know, it feels like the safe guess.
I'm going Chrissy.
So also feeling a safe guess, right?
Christian, Chrissy, Camilla, as long as they're in the game,
pick those people and guess what?
They're all in different tribes.
So if there's a puzzle, they're all taking part in it.
There's no way they don't.
All right, that was easy.
Moving on.
All right, here's the one I fixed it.
Who will be the first person shown holding
the tribal immunity idol after the immunity challenge?
So if two tribes win it,
it's only the first one that counts.
Last week it was Angelina who held it first.
The week before it was coach who held it first.
Although you got the points for Stephanie last week
because I messed up.
So who are you picking this week?
I'm going to go with Jonathan that, you know,
Jeff will just go and hand it to the biggest man on the tribe.
And yeah, you know, say something about his performance,
leading them to a victory.
I'm just thinking with that tribe,
and I'm going to go with D because Jonathan, you know,
the big guys sometimes will just stand there on the mat
while this happens and D's the front row person, you know,
she's short.
So if you're in the front row, that means
you're a little bit easier to get up there.
I mean, that's Angelina last week.
I mean, she was the one who went up and grabbed it.
I don't know if she was the one who was the hero of that tribe,
although she was pretty good actually in that challenge.
Maybe her best ever.
I mean, there is also like part of the gameplay
is like thinking, okay, who wants to make sure
they have some screen time here?
Who is the most aware of the cameras
and that this is a moment that will absolutely be shown on TV?
So Angelina would was a safe one.
Yeah, that is true.
That's a good point.
Yeah, I'm going to go with D.
I get the Jonathan pick there.
I mean, especially if Jonathan is the one
who just absolutely dominates Jeff,
will be like, everybody move away
so I can hand this to Jonathan.
But I'm going to go with D.
I'm going to go with D.
I think that's a good pick.
That's a fun random question.
That's probably the one that I've had
the most fun with at this point in terms of questions
is who will hold that first?
Cause it is so random.
And again, it's like, I really wanted to do things
that you can't be spoiled on.
Cause I know that there's things that are going to be circling.
And I know especially as the season goes on,
you go to one party, you go here, you might hear something
and then that starts to sit in your mind forever.
But like even if you know who wins immunity,
guessing who's going to be the first one to walk over
to Jeff, like, I don't know.
You got to have a really good production connection
to get that answer, right?
So yeah, I would guess most people production
have no idea.
Like could not, could not tell you.
There's a lot of people in production
who couldn't name all 24 people on the season.
Let's let's be real.
That's not a knock on production.
That's just, hey, when you're working on the show,
it's not as important about who's out there
as we as we would think.
So all right, last one, and I just lost it.
And I got to pull it back up.
So who will cast the deciding vote this week?
So again, this always means the vote jeffries
when he says, fourth person voted out a survivor.
And if there are multiple tribals,
this is one that would go to multiple people.
But it's just the last one that has held up
before the person has to go.
It was Joe and week one.
I don't know what it was last week.
Who went home last week, Savannah?
I think it was, it was a random one last week.
Let me see if I can find it.
But who do you, who do you have for this, this one here?
I'm going to go with Stephanie.
Because on that tribe, if it is that tribe,
I think it's going to come down to Q or Stephanie.
And so letting Stephanie cast the vote that ensures
that she's safe, I think that might be a move that we see.
Yeah, I could see that.
I had, it was Christian last week, whose vote was shown.
This is where I'm actually going to put Aubrey.
And my thinking with this is, when you look at the way
the tribe broke out, because you have Stephanie
between Stephanie and Q, that's on Vatu.
But when you look at the way Aubrey's tribe broke out,
Joe looks like he's kind of in the swing position there.
Colby doesn't have a vote, so it can't be Colby.
And then Genevieve and Aubrey had
their really weird moment in episode number one.
And I could see Genevieve going
and Aubrey being the one who votes that way.
But if Genevieve, or if Aubrey does the side
to stick with Genevieve and Colby and potentially coach
or Joe to vote out a Chrissy or a Tiffany,
I think they would show Aubrey's vote
as the one being like, you were in doubt
that I was going to stick with my people,
but I'm sticking with my people.
So I put all of my eggs in one basket here,
saying that that tribe is going to lose.
Now I'm going to go with Aubrey.
So my question though, over there,
when you're talking about Stephanie,
do you think Stephanie would play
with the David versus Goliath people?
What aligns do you actually think
is going to fully come out of that tribe?
Oh, I mean, it is so hard to know
for sure how tight everyone is going to be.
With there, so she was with Angelina, right?
On the earlier, so I could see her being pulled in
and they're just kind of treating her as a vote,
but she also sees this as the only way
that she's going to be safe.
For that, to me, what makes the most sense
is the David versus Goliath three
are going to be at the center
and they're just kind of kind of be pulling in
who works for the next vote.
But maybe they're not that close, maybe the Christian
and Ozzy are close to them.
We realize there's something like that that could happen,
but I would first guess would be
that the David versus Goliath three are going to unite.
Yeah, and then you got Steph.
I feel like we'd get along pretty well with Ozzy.
Also crazy like Stephanie and Ozzy
have never played on the same season, you know,
wild to think about those things
because they're the same exact era.
But they've never been on the same season
and they've been immensely popular.
You know, when they were going,
so you would expect that they would have been back.
Yeah, so neither one were.
So yeah, I could see the two of them getting along pretty well.
I could see Christian and Ozzy
and Emily maybe sticking together.
So when I broke it down, I said I thought Steph
was in a little bit of trouble,
but I think it's going to be Q who's in the most trouble
if that tribe goes.
And if that tribe goes, Q without his vote,
I could see Stephanie maybe being that deciding Q vote
and that's the end of that.
So yeah, I think your Aubrey pick is a good one.
Also, if she plays her idol
and they were targeting her,
then her vote will definitely be one of the, you know,
the key ones that gets read there at the end.
So I think Aubrey's a really, really good pick.
Yeah, I know because obviously there's seven people
in that tribe, so if Aubrey plays her idol,
you could get a three, three vote split,
but Chrissy and Tiffany aren't split votes together.
Like they're not close, they're not doing that.
And then you can't get a three, three vote split
because Colby doesn't have a vote.
So you can't really split votes there.
So I do think if they voted for Aubrey, it would be a pile on
and we might get a one nothing vote out.
Yeah, that would be Aubrey's vote.
And maybe we'd see Aubrey smile for the first time
since he's in 34 or something.
I don't even know.
It's been a while.
Yeah, all right.
So we've gone through all 10 questions.
Everybody, if you want to play along,
again, the link is in the description.
So make sure you sign up over there.
Before I let you go, though, I want to know
who is your winner pick.
I know you said before the season, you went with Tiffany,
but Tiffany has been as bad as invisible as you can be.
So I'm assuming you're off with me.
Yeah.
So because of the edit that he got for what could be
the most embarrassing moment, not turning out that way,
I would say if I was having to make a pick right now,
I'd be shifting over to Christian saying like that was actually
like that guy edited strongly as it's possible to be edited
if that's going to be included in the episode.
And why doesn't it get included?
Maybe because he's going to be a main character
for a long time on the season.
Yeah, that's where my head's going to.
Devons was my preseason winner pick,
but then I watched last week and I was like,
well, first of all, I'm happy Christian and Devons
are both doing this and they're aligned in this.
But man, Christian just came out.
I mean, he looked so good after all of that.
And that's just crazy to think about
because that was easily something that the editors
could have dragged him through the mud.
They could have made him look foolish
and they didn't.
Instead, he ends up looking good.
And now there's that hidden thing at tribal.
And I'm excited to see this.
I mean, one of the promo scenes that they showed
for this week is Rick Devons coming back
just being so excited about the fact that they pulled this off.
And that's a do-I'm sad that they're splitting up
because that is a duo that I have thoroughly enjoyed so far.
Yeah, and it has been a lot of fun.
And I think our discussion about the Christian thing,
it is a point when players do complain about their edits.
There's a part of me that is always like,
they can't show something you didn't do.
So anything that is on TV that you think
makes you push in a bad light, you did do that thing.
But this is an example of the power of editing
because I think in the hands of most storytellers,
that would be an incredibly embarrassing moment.
And somehow they were able through the combination
of his confessionals and how they put it together
and the music that they played to not make it feel like
they were ruining this PhD's reputation
for the sake of a laugh on a reality TV show.
Exactly, because they could have.
And what's also crazy to me is in episode one,
we have that whole story about his son
and how emotional he is.
So when he's looking at John, thinking,
oh man, he's about to break down.
He's really missing his son.
I'm like, oh, here's Christian's winner at it big time.
It's about to be all about his son again,
and now he just can't handle being away.
And instead it's like, no, man, I gotta go in the water real quick.
I was gonna believe it.
I couldn't believe it.
I'm thoroughly enjoying all of this though, so far, so.
We'll see what happens this week.
Joe, it's always a pleasure.
Where can people find your book?
I gotta put the link in the description here
so that everybody who's following along can find it.
Yeah, the book is called Survivor Cultural History.
It's part of a series from, at this point,
it was Roman in Littlefield,
now it's Bloomsbury Academic, the publisher got purchased.
But most booksellers, it's a prominent bookseller
that any online bookseller should be able to get it.
It's certainly available on the most prominent of those,
again, it's called Survivor Cultural History.
And it was a lot of fun to just really delve in
and think deeply about Survivor for an extended period
and write the book.
And what I have found though, as I have continued to play,
Fantasy Survivor Games like this one,
it doesn't mean a whole lot for making predictions.
And I tried to guess what's coming next.
It's kind of like Marge Madness.
We gotta come up in a week and a half here.
It's like your grandma ends up winning
and you're like, how did she win?
She doesn't even know what teams are in the tournament.
That's kind of what happens with Survivor sometimes.
We're like, the biggest die-hard,
you can know everything about these people.
You know some of these people, you still don't know.
You still don't know.
That's why Survivor...
Yeah, I've started to have my three sons.
I've started to watch Survivor in the last few seasons with me
and play a Fantasy Survivor game.
And there's definitely sometimes where it's like,
well, they nailed their picks.
And I was quite wrong.
Yeah, you're sitting there actually doing what I did
with Charlie being one of the first three people
to be introduced by Jeff.
And it's like, yeah, man,
all that's just gonna be broken immediately.
It doesn't matter.
It doesn't matter how much you think about it.
Sometimes she's gonna throw the dart
and hope that it sticks, but yeah.
So check out the book.
I'll have the link in the description here.
I'll pull it from the other podcast
that we did together back in the summer
or back in last May, now crazy almost a year ago.
But this was a pleasure.
It was great having you on.
Anything else that you wanna talk about
before we let you go?
Oh no, thank you for having me on.
I really do appreciate it.
I do have my own podcast called The Protagonist Podcast
where each week we talk about a great character
and a great story.
So besides survivor, I do a lot of work with pop culture
in my academic career.
And so that podcast is an outlet to talk about,
you know, a character from a comic book series
or a TV show or a movie each week.
Awesome.
Yeah, so make sure you all check that one out.
patreon.com slash especially if you wanna play
along in our power rankings game.
You only miss one week because, you know,
we don't start it until after week number one.
So if you wanna play along in that game,
go ahead and join.
We got a whole bunch of other stuff going out over there.
We're into Sam Wandaelser for every season matter.
So if you're a top tier patron, you get that.
I know that today, Tag With and McKenna
dropped a brand steel of the luckiest
and unluckiest players in survivor history.
And the winner was truly hilarious
when you think about the journey that the person went on,
but I can't reveal that.
And then tomorrow night,
Will and I will of course be live at 9.30 pm
right after the episode.
We will be diving in to everything that happened,
probably with another recap that's longer than the episode
because somehow we managed to do that pretty consistently.
And then on Thursday night at 7.30,
Blake and I have Joe Menna from survivor 35
to come in and talk about Chrissy doing all these evil things
like massaging calves and unbraiding hair
and doing all of those things.
And that's it.
We got a whole bunch of stuff.
If you haven't checked out Tag With's episode
with Steven from last season, that came out yesterday.
So check that out.
Otherwise, like the video, subscribe to the channel
and I'll see you tomorrow night.
