7News Just In — Sydney choked by smoke from hazard reduction burns. Machine-transcribed; use the interactive transcript above to jump the player to any line.
A warning to residents in Sydney's West this morning with multiple suburbs waking up choked by thick smoke. Live to Jake Laal this morning, Jake, what's happened? Yeah, good morning, Hugh. Look, it is a big couple of days for those hazard reduction burns. The RFS has a number of burns happening across the weekend, across Sydney, in the north in Hornsbyve, got burns happening there in the west in Penroth and in the south in the shy. Sydney is really being flanked by that thick smoke haze and there isn't too much wind around right now, so you can expect that thick smell of smoke to stick around throughout the start of the day. The RFS does say that if you are in one of those areas, just try and keep your windows indoors shut. If you do have any kind of asthma condition, try and stay inside as much of the day as possible. This is all, of course, in preparation for what is being dubbed a supercharged fire season, thanks to a dangerous combination of a super sized El Nino weather system and what are being called flash droughts, which basically act as
a hot hair dryer on already warm conditions. So the RFS is no doubt facing a dangerous summer ahead and they're doing everything they can right now to prepare Hugh. Okay, Jake. Thank you.
