Winner of the Paul Spragg Big Finish competition, Luke Hollands joins me to talk about a much ignored but blisteringly action packed and entertaining festive special. Ryan & Graham leave, Jack returns, Daleks on Daleks, Jodie in prison...so much to talk about!
I'm not a real man, I'm not a real man
I'm not a real man, I'm not a real man
I'm not a real man, I'm not a real man
I'm not a real man, I'm not a real man
I'm not a real man
I'm still with the Blum Penmite for a good cookout
Oh, welcome back to Hapsdo with the Blum Penmite
The Doctor Who commentary podcast
Mr. Luke Holland, hello
Hello, Joe, how you doing?
Oh, yeah, well, it was pretty stressful today
But I knew I was coming to hang out with a new friend tonight
How are you doing?
I'm doing well, I'm doing well, yeah, I can't wait to talk about this amazing story
Well, yes, we are going to have a little peripheral discussion
about Jodi and her era before we go into revolution of the Daleks
which we are here to talk about today
Somehow not covered on hand stuff, it's baffling
But before we do that, you know
I could have swarmed, you know
I saw your name turn up on a schedule recently
On a few websites
Please, not a criminal one
Not criminal ones, was it?
Some of you want to confess?
No, no
Are you sure?
Yeah
I'm trying to get you more assignments here, not less, okay?
Okay
Now, why don't you tell me all about the Pulse Bragg competition
What this is all about?
Yeah, so every year, Big Finish runs the Pulse Bragg opportunity
Which is in memory of Pulse Bragg
He worked at Big Finish and sadly died quite young
But they run an opportunity every year where anyone can write a story
And you have to write 500 words synopsis
And a 500 word entry, sort of opening of the story
And this year it was specifically Jodi themed
It was the 13th Doctor One
But I've been entering it for every year for the last ten years
Pretty much, and this year I won
So very excitingly
This Christmas, my first ever Big Finish came out
You can listen to it right now
And may I say to anyone who's listening
Please do go and listen to it, it's fabulous
It's got a wonderful concept, it's hard
But Jesus Christ, man, you're not happy to just sit on that concept
No, we go on a whirlwind tour, we go to all these wells
And it's absolutely amazing
Yeah, how imagination you have
Yeah, I thought it would be a lot easier if I had sort of three stories within one story
And I could just write these short little bits and connect them all together
But actually that ended up becoming quite unmanageable
You meant to write 5,000 words
And I think my first draft was about 11,000 words
Oh boy, okay
So I'd like to hack that to pieces then
Hit the pieces
So yeah, maybe the director's cut or the writer's cut coming out at some point
But can I offer an enticing teaser to the people listening
Okay, imagine or I imagine if a day of the week
You know, the title may give away which one
A day of the week goes missing and it just happens to be a day
Where the doctor achieves a great deal in the universe
And when it's taken, all of that is undone
And all the chaos that ensues
Yeah, exactly
The doctor has to go into the day with the owner of the lost property office to convince her to give her the day back
So she can save the universe
I mean, just to set in a story and a lost property office is genius
You know, it's never been done before in doctorhood
No, I know, but I kind of wanted to cram so much more into it
I mean, the great thing wasn't the cover art they did for it
Like a film canister
And there was a production code on it for the Feast of Stephen for Dalek's Master Plan
So there's a little bit that I wrote into it where there's like a pew, pew, pew
And the canister gets blown up
So that's where we're missing stories are
And my wedding ring, because I was inspired by losing my wedding ring
To write the story that ends up in there as well
Are you telling me that you are responsible for the destruction of the Feast of Stephen
Because I've got someone downstairs, right? It's got a few words to say to you
Yeah, yeah, yeah
But hopefully I can get it back at some point
In a purely fictitious way
I mean, do you know what the genius of all this is?
Is you've got, what do you say 10 years you've been submitting?
Oh, you're pretty much, I think, yeah
At least at least I put 10 entries in
Are you listening to this, right?
First of all, you've chosen this man as the best of all of the bunch, right?
So, you know, I mean, they probably had a lot of frosts as well
But, you know, I'm sure they have some great stuff going in
I mean, my mate Jack, oh, bless him
I better not say anything on the call we might listen
But he's got nine other stories already to go
Like, if you've been doing it for 10 years, where are all the other nine?
Come on, let me tell you my phone
Most of them are my phone notes
I'm constantly writing stuff on my phone notes
They're like, oh, that'd be a good thing to do
One year I had, I wrote all about a time hotel
Where every door went on to a tip
A different lit shoot was like a two years beforehand
So, maybe Moffit copied that for us
And now we know who's waste paper bar skits he's been scrappling about in anyway
Yeah, he's been around my bins
I mean, I was just about excuse me
I was just about to say, you know, well, I've had a great time
Because there were so many wonderful ideas in the Wednesday that it wasn't
Can you give me just one other one that you've conjured up out of all the others?
Of all the past stories
Yeah, come on, what's your favourite?
What's your favourite apart from the one that obviously was made?
Yes, well, the time hotel one I've got really excited by,
because it was like, it wasn't so much the doors that they went through
It was the windows looked out on a different time
So it was about a man that had lost his wife
And every, he'd discovered this time hotel
And he went to this room, every anniversary they had
But unfortunately, it sort of always looked out on when they're their first meeting
Walking along the seafront and meeting together
And then somehow Daleks were involved and then it got them
Yeah, those were the things I've been in my heart already
You know, I wondered when you watched that dismal Christmas day episode of Stulvey Island
And I was like, hang on, that's my bloody idea
It would have been much better in my short trip
It was so disturbed, it was depressing, wasn't it? It wasn't great
Terrible, my God
Well, I mean, we're going back to the era before that, you know, happy days
Well, actually, let's talk about that then, shall we?
Let's talk about, no, wait, hang on, I'm getting ahead of myself
I want to ask you first, if you don't mind
Let's do a bit of probing
Thank you, Bob
How does you insert yourself into Doctor Who, Luke?
Sorry
That's all right
Take yourself back, Joe
It's October, 1988
It's a drizzly evening
I think there's on middle out, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've already gone to bed early
So I'm only about five years old, all at the time
And from my bed, I hear terrifying voices downstairs
It is one episode, not sure which of Remembrance of the Daleks
Oh, that was brilliant for you
It would never calling
Come downstairs
For some reason, for ages, I had a memory that it was the last episode
So it was down for us
But I'm not sure if it was or whether that's like a false memory
But I was so scared
Basically, a camera downstairs, utterly terrified
I was like, please, I never want to hear this theme tune
I never want to hear Daleks
I never want to see any of this ever again
How that worked out for you
Yeah, it didn't work out very well
Because, not long after that, I started talking to my mum about
I'd love to see an episode that didn't have Daleks in it
And in our local library, they had the Arkinspace on VHS
And I watched that
And then when I was a little bit older and I was better at reading
I started diving into target books
And started getting there
I think I must have read vengeance on Varus about six times
A hard back copy of Universal Varus
Unhealthy
But yeah
Yeah, yeah
And then what really got me into it was 1993
Or sort of 92, 93
So when all the repeats were on
I started watching it then
So like mind robber, sea devils
Genesis as Daleks
Obviously Planet of the Daleks
Which is my absolute favourite on, you know, across the actual 30th anniversary
Which was my 10th birthday
10th, I want a great year to watch Planet of the Daleks
I know, I just absolutely loved it
And to watch every light Friday, then coming home
And it being on
It was such a treat at the end of the way
My mum would get fishing chips
Watch Planet of the Daleks
All those little videos that were on at the beginning before
I'd like the antiques one
They had the unit one
They had the missing story one
With being Levine on it
And then you had in that run
You had dimensions in time
Was in that as well
I mean, you are so favourite on you
I'm a soul, yeah
I've voted for Mandy
I can't remember a vote for me
No one voted for Big Ron, did they?
I think I voted for Big Ron
I think I voted for Big Ron
Could I like Big Ron?
I mean, 13 million people can't be Ron, right?
Don't mention these
I mean, 13 million people can't be Ron, right?
Don't mention these ones
Exactly
And then obviously you had, you know
I've got really into the third doctor around there as well
So obviously John Perk who was everywhere was on
Ghost Benz, Parodyser Death, he was on
Crank up your granny
I mean, he was everywhere
Noel House Party
He was
He got away so well
Yes
Hello
Yeah, so I just, that was sort of cemented it I think then
Because I don't know obviously then about things like missing stories
Or like their sort of history of the show
I remember asking my parents that Christmas for a bunch of books
And I got like the, like the David J. Howell, like the 70s
Oh, God
And there was one, it was called time, time, frames
Right
With all the covers
Yeah, with all the covers in it
Yeah, I used to sit every night as like a ten-year-old
I just flick through that
And just look at it
You was in two days from that point
Yeah
It wasn't the fact that Katie Manning was topless in it, that wasn't her
Oh, I don't know
Did you see that Companions book that they brought out?
Yeah, that was the, I had the copy of that as well
Patreon, page two
Unbelievable, isn't it?
That is burned into my mind
It may have had huge influence on my life but in the wrong direction
But I weirdly, it got to, just like just after 96
Obviously it came back as very exciting about the TV movies
Or watch that
And around that time when I started becoming a teenager
It's self-conscious about the whole Doctor Who
And I packed everything I had away, got rid of everything
Oh, I believe she got rid of it
Or yeah
Yeah, the whole shelves of Target book
No
Everything, I just like, I get read, I'm done
So towards the late 90s
So have you twist on turns in this story, Luke?
No, keep going
I'm my own hiatus
I'm my own wilderness
What were you watching at the time then when Doctor Who wasn't in
I quite liked a bit of red dwarf at the time
Oh, that's a pretty good one
Exactly, I did like a bit of that
You just had the crystal maze or something like that
I wouldn't mean
But now I sort of gave it all up
So I don't know, I got really self-conscious about it
I gave it all up
I would tell my parents
They're like, do not mention it to anyone
I think I basically wanted to go a friend at the time
And I was like, please don't
I've got to put this away because I can't have this around
I believe you swore your parents to secrecy
I swore them to secrecy is like
Do not do dare mention this ever happened
Well secretly, I'd be in my room
I'd like a box under the bed that I'd kept a few like annuals
A few books
And I'd secretly look and go, I love this
This is so nice
I've never really thought you had all sorts under that bed
And it's just like the appointment of a snowman target
I know, yeah
Exactly, yeah
I know
Let's show you my previous partners after that
Obviously, I'm secretly here like sneaking down to try and watch the news here or whatever
I've been a university
Oh, even when the news series came back
Yeah, you still kept this under wraps
I kept it under wraps
Yeah, yeah, yeah, when the news series came back
I'd be like, yeah, I'm just turning it into my room a second
You know, on a Saturday, yeah, I'm just going to get a few pre drinks
And you know, I'll just turn it to time
I'll see you in a couple of hours' time
Tell you what, mate, it goes, yeah, you wank a lot
You're out there watching gridlock
Exactly, literally
Literally
Yeah
Okay, I'm hoping that the story is going to end with I got over all of that
It does end with that
I've got all over all of that
And I've embraced it all again
I'm starting to buy all my targets back now
But I mean, they've all gone up in price now
Yeah, it's hard breaking
I got rid of all mine as well when I moved out
That's a story I'll tell a million times
It basically, my ex-husband
Curse the man
Said to me
Something's got to go
We can't take everything
And I had all the original books, I had all the targets
And all the VHS things, I had all the DVD
And so I just went, oh, we've great
For a morning, I've been bagging in a skip
In a skip, I didn't even pass them on or anything
I know
Do you know how much they're worth now these?
I know
I know
Well, in my mind, like a target book is 20p
And yeah, you shop now on this like
£2.50 is the cheapest you can get
20p?
You know, when you're playing with a yo-yo
And cheering gum back in the day
Nowadays
Yeah, I think of what
I pay £27 for time in the Ronnie
Oh my god
I mean, I had loads of the blue spine ones
That are now worth
Slute fortune
I remember getting the invasion when it came out
Dioliconvation of Earth
A load of them I just think
God, what was I doing?
I had an early edition of
Like a first edition of wheeling space as well
Which is now with an absolute fortune
Now, can I ask you a personal question?
Go on
Okay, there'll be many
So you used to it
So your wife now, yes
So did you go into that relationship
Immediately as a doctor who fan
Or was there a moment
Where you had to sit her down
And go, I have something brutal
To confess to you
I did sort of confess it
Do you know what?
I thought
I had so many relationships
Where I was like
I've got to hide this
How many?
Utah hot
Not that, I think
Not that way
But with her, I kind of thought
Do you know what?
I really like her
Like, I really like her
I'm going to get this out of the way early
And maybe that'll be a tester
If she doesn't go
She's a complete weirdo
I mean, I'll do that with, like, women
You know, like
Sorry, sorry, sorry, no, go on
As you went
Oh, okay, well, cool, yeah
Oh, so you were like
Oh, God, all these years
All these years, I could have just said that
What was it doing?
It must be a great dramatic moment
It was for me, I don't think it was for her
I think she just didn't really ignore it
But what you're basically saying is
You came out as a doctor who
You came out of the closet
But she's the only person
Other than my parents
Who I've really sort of told
Oh, well, I'm sorry
I mean, the numbers are quite good for this thing, you know
So you might hold a few more people
When this goes out
Well, nobody else within your life
You work, you
No, no
Oh, God, you are closet, aren't you?
I'm very closet
I mean, usually
When people turn up on the Zoom call
I can see all manner of geekery behind them
Now, I'm just going to set the scene behind Luke right now
I mean, it looks like a Piano Force
Maybe, aren't you there? Is that really it?
Yeah, you played a bit
Oh, beautiful, thank you
I can't really play it through
And some very sophisticated looking library
Behind you, so where's all the doctors who?
Actually, those upstairs
I should have bought it down
So, actually, when this, when the latest, when this story dropped on the short trip drops
I was down in Ramsgate, actually, of all places
And, and went in a secondhand bookshop
And they had an entire shelf of targets
And I was like, I'm going to treat myself
And bought a whole lot of them
So I've now got...
How much that set you back?
Yeah, it set me up a lot
Sorry, darling, we can't pay the rent this month
No, she was with me at the time
I was like, no, I just, I've got to do it
I'm afraid I need to start doing it again
Is it a therapy, darling?
Yeah, yeah, it's right
Speaking dopamineers are there, reading the edge of destruction
This has been one of my favourite Doctor Who journeys
I've heard so far, you know
I mean, I'm so pleased
I'm so pleased that, well, I mean, I'll truly understand the depths of your fandom
As we go through this, all right
Because you can usually tell by how obscure the references to all my stories
So that they drop our...
Well, let's start with Jody then
Because we're talking about revolution of the Daleks
And, obviously, Jody was the Doctor in your big finish, short trip
So, I'm going to sort of not frame it out, I normally do
Which is what do you think of her
Because I know you like her
And we're talking about her
So let's assume that you do
But, when you went to Roy
You're short trip
What was it?
What was it about her Doctor?
How did you pin her down on the page if you're part of the bottom?
Yeah, well, I think she's...
It's not she's easy to write for
But, like, the character is so sort of fully formed
You know exactly what she's going to say at any minute
You know exactly what kind of quip she's going to say
She's just...
Yeah, you sort of that mix of humour and the quirkiness
The littler side
You know, she's just...
It's a joy to write for
Because you're like, I don't know exactly what she's going to say now
She would say something like this
And I could sort of really feel the voice in my head
It was so...
I have to say
When I was so authentic
Like, Claire Corbett's reading as well
It's just so Jody as well
But, you know, it's nothing without the words, right?
And just the jokes that I always think Jody's fast
And the speed of her lines in your story
I was like, yeah, there's a rhythm to it
And you just got it in a way that
Actually, some of the big finishes that I've heard
Some do and some don't
And it's a difficult thing to get right
But also as well, you manage to do
Jody's position in a very non-crush-chip and all sort of a way
Bravo sir
I mean, I love that kind of exposition
When it's sort of funny
The hard thing with that though is
Because obviously a short trip isn't like a full-cast audio driver
So you've got one voice doing it
So you have to have...
I like it though
It did feel like you had a full-cast in there
You have to have that exposition
Because you can't sort of have...
It's one actor speaking to themselves
So you can't sort of go
Oh, yes, Doctor
What do you mean, Doctor?
Speaking back with the boys
Although Claire Corbett did have to do a bit like she did very, very well
But see, sort of, right, these bit more sort of exposition pieces
And I don't know, yeah, it's just...
I mean, I love Jody
I think she's great
Yeah, you know, I was...
I was so ready for a female, Doctor, when they announced it
I was pumped
Yeah, whilst the world was screaming out
It's rage
The hideous decision to put a woman as a time-lord
I was just so happy
And then, I think, series 11
I really liked, but I didn't love
Then series 12
From Spifle...
No, from Pony Resolution on
I was just like, fuck, this is so good
There's so much energy in this now
Especially after, and I do
Very much like Peter Colby, but I have so many issues with that era
It was dark, it was quite slow
It was very angst-ridden
It was very, sort of
There was a lot of self-therapy going on for the Doctor
I just wanted just some fun and some adventures and all of that
And we do get some of that with Jody as well
By the time we got to Flux, Matt, it was just my favourite of the news series
That era
Yeah, I think that was my favourite too
I think you just got better and better and better
And then, when you get to Flux and then power the Doctor
Oh boy
It peaks a lot
That's the best bit of power on the Doctor for you
I think it's the bit where Peter Davidson says
What am I thinking of?
Cybermen, what am I thinking of now?
She goes mad right
I like the bit where it is
She goes
Oh yes, he knew exactly what
When I saw Colin on the screen, I punched the air
Yeah
But the, oh I'm Peter, Paul McCann as well
I was like, oh my god, anything else
I thought
It actually sort of made the 60th anniversary
Well, we just got beeped the beep
And we were a weird pulling the cracker regeneration
Seemed a little bit limping comparison
Yeah, yeah
And I think like I fell the same way about the Paradoxes
I do about five doctors probably
Where you're like, I'm not sure some of this makes sense
No
I'm so here for it
I'm so here for it
I couldn't give myself
You got a giant fielding going, yes
I would like to go into the TARDIS
Please
Well, let's swing us around to
Revolution of the Daleks then
You said you hadn't seen this for a while
I certainly hadn't seen this for a while
Did you like this on first transmission?
Yeah, so I remember loving it on first transmission
So I think
Like
Timeless children
I'm very happy with it
Why did you sigh before
No, not sigh
Timeless children
Because at the time
I was sort of unsure
As to whether it was a good decision or not
I could really remember mine
And I think not the whole concept of it
Just the level of law that it was going into and creating
I was just like, oh, there's a bit of fanwank
Is it, do we really need this
Is this really going to bring in audiences?
Are we going to enjoy it?
And when it got to revolution, I sort of thought
Great, it's just a straightforward story
Yeah
It is just a good adventure
It is really cinematic
It's following on from the previous
Festive special
Great Daleks story
Good solid story, and that's all I wanted
And actually now when I was
Watched it back
I might prefer the time as children
Ah, what a big guy
What a blame
Because now I've sort of understood that
I've made my piece
I like when I was watching that originally
And all the stuff in Ireland and the baby
And falling off a cliff and
I was like, what the hell is going on
I just want to start
Can I just have a straightforward story please
Right? They are a lot of those
Standard loans and fairly straightforward
Morally and creatively
Do you know what?
When I watched this earlier
The thing that really stood out for me
Was I was never really moved
By Ryan and Graham's departure
When it went out
And I had a tear in my eye
When I was watching it today
And I was like wow, this is really
And do you know what it was?
It was the fact that it was so
And just so like
Do you know what? I've had enough
I've decided actually my life's here
And I want to look after the people I love
And I was like yeah, that's
That for me is a much better exit
Than oh god, I'm often a guy
And I have with some lesbian from the end of time
Or the world is ending
And the whole universe is going to end
Unless I kill myself for me
To build, turn into a side man
And then a gay cuddle
No, I mean I love Bill
That series of with Capaldi is
One of the best ones I love them as a side
I've seen everybody did to her
I know, I can't
It's awful
I don't know what that ever thought
I was a good idea to shoot a companion through the stomach
So you can then know the camera through the image
The whole was so big
The camera got her a side man
And then like oh no, we're not going to sell
There's some kind of puddle thing
We'll sell that in the next bit
At the Christmas whatever
Anyway, I mean this brings back
Jack North's character
It's catching jacks in this
Obviously the Daleks are in this
It's following out from resolution
Like there's a lot of stuff you sort of need to know
Before you go in
I think there are some little nods in there
To previous sort of classic era Dalek stories
And various classic stories
I think I mean I don't know if they're intentional
Or it's just me reading it
And a couple of things
Yeah, no, but you know there's things like
Oh, we'll get into it in a second
But obviously what other story
Has someone being killed
And a Dalek being taken away in a truck
Remembers the Daleks
Ratcliffe takes away
You're quite deep there
Yeah, I'm trying to now think of how
I can bring the chase into this somehow
We have a shot the Prime Minister before
We probably should have done
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I think we have shot the Prime Minister
I'm not shot the Prime Minister
I suppose Harriet is
She's ex Prime Minister isn't she
Harriet Jones
It's this Prime Minister
It's supposed to be a take on Theresa May
It's not the idea
It must be a take on Theresa May
I mean the whole idea of the Daleks
Of the defence drones
Be rolled out across the world
And then they all come evil
Kill everyone
I mean that's just delicious I think
A lot of an RTD slight thing
Where you've got that really
Familiar imagery of 10 Downing Street
And then the Daleks there
I mean it's almost sort of
Dalek impatient of earth isn't it
Like seeing the Daleks in London
And then executing the Prime Minister
Which I think in 2021
Quite a lot of people would have been quite
We were sort of essentially
Yeah, yeah, yeah
However it was I was punching the air
I mean that's pure trailer for yours
Or a bit where she shot and then the Dalek turns to the camera
Like Daleks and the Masters of earth
Sort of there
But like all the stuff about I mean I thought
Some of this stuff is actually ongoing
Like the stuff that about using the drones for civil unrest
And things like that
We've just had a load of riots
And I was like oh there's something to this idea
It's almost a shame it's sort of wasted just here
But yeah, but you forget that I forgot
I sort of had a brain fart
And I forgot that this was actually filmed before
COVID
Because in my mind
It was I was like oh it must be a satire on COVID right
You've got like
Your hero is locked away
In confinement
They can only go out for exercise
Like once a day
You've got dodgy government contracts
You've got broadcast from Downing's point
You've got how did he know
How did he know what was coming down
Sales being created
That then go across the world
And cause like a devastating you know
Terrific devastating thing
So this must be like all especially when Jody's in prison
Yeah
You know Chris Chibner has a scrying glass
Where you can see it in the future
And maybe he does
Patrick Mira are on the wall right
Let's make this up
Can you tell us why do you tell us
Chris you got a wallet paper
I mean I cannot stress this enough
And I always say it and I've had people
It's not critisized me for it
But just the fact that
This production team risked bloody death
We're in COVID
Come on, like
And I mean one of the things that I love Jody for
You remember that little video she did
She said she got
And make me cry thinking about that
Is just to do that
Thinking of kids that we watch
I mean I watched it and was like
All right Doctor
What did you say at the end?
You've got this or something like that
Yeah
It's so good
This era for not having enough hero moments
He's like come on
Come on there's plenty of hero moments
She literally falls
Out of the sky
Through a train roof
At the end of that episode
She's there jumping cranes
Taking the piss out of his name
I mean at the start of this one
Well at the start of this one it's a flashback
To the previous festive special
But you know it just it shows
It's just that constant hero moments
To this where all those Daleks flying
To the TARDIS afterwards
I mean that is just great
And then she's at this old bait and switch
Which is actually a hologram
And then I'm too much like
Didn't race on this call
But are we sure that Disney
Didn't fund this era
And instead of the one to come
Looks so beautiful
It's gorgeous
But probably
With not as much money
Like the greens, the purples
The reds, the blues
Really just so gorgeous
Gorgeous shots
I don't think it's looked better
When they're in that big way
You know where all the Dalek mutants are
Where they're all being grown
All the colours in there
It just feels vast
And there's some bits
Where Leo is talking to
Chris and off and there
It's all blue
The light up
They just keep it
Keep it pretty dark
It's Leo that really delicious man
Who grows the Dalek
Yeah it's that one
So sad when he died you know
Good grief
Doctor didn't save him like he did with the previous person
He'd been taken over the Dalek the year before
He likes killing all
There was a pretty man in resolution as well
The sort of policeman going on about his digits
Do you remember
The one great thing about Chibson's Dalek
It's an online mafia's Dalek
Like murder a lot of people
I mean they are bad
I like the fact in this
When the defense drone Dalek's go bad
They just start
Indiscriminately murdering people
They're not like stop or
Please do this or negotiate
They're just like indiscriminate
They see all those people in passport control
Just had to know of their passport
And being murdered
You can see people falling
I mean what did people think walking past
What's going on over there
That's Dalek's literally dying
Lepran said to him
It's great and do you know
Do you know where that bridges that they shot
Yeah and in Bristol I used to look at that
I did wonder
Oh that is stunning
Should we go and watch this thing
We could wax lyrical before we go in
But we may as well watch it
And wax lyrical while we're doing it
And then count us in
Five or three seconds
Whatever she fancy
Okay
Five, four, three, two, one
Let's go
Wait up
I'm so excited doing this with a new person
You know I mean virgin territory here
I love this door
Sort of start
Taking a piss I remember
It does like his big chunky font
Yeah and it's the same font
Isn't it across the, across flux as well
I, you know
In a resolution
I really felt that
I've always loved seconds music
But I really felt it
It went up a notch in that
His Dalek theme is just amazing
It's great I bet he's Dalek and his cyberman famous
So good
Do you think about this sort of junkyard chic Dalek here
I quite like it
I do quite like it
I think I like it better when it's defense drone one
Blingy with the lights and the
Whatever you like a bit of bling do you
I don't know
When you're not throwing it off in Tesco
That is
So that's the niche reference that no one will understand
Because they won't start with this call
Here we go look there's two people at GCHQ
There is there is but one is extremely hot
So we don't mind
Although did you notice right?
Albright at times he sips his bloody tea
Just to make the point
This is an important plot point
That's tea cup
Can I stop for a cup of tea?
Yeah because you
Oh I wonder if that will be important
Yeah
So I was trying to think this through
Because I think it's a good moment
Where he gets dragged on the side of the road
So they must be overhearing this conversation
Knowing he likes tea
And having set up that wagon on the motorway
What if he stops it like Greg's
For a sausage roll
Everywhere, on the entire road from Cheltenham's
Wherever this depository place
That wall must have been like
The McDonald's muffin
He stopped for that and stayed
Here he is
Do you like the idea though of the Dalek
The remains of the Dalek
Basically kickstart in this story
Yeah I think it's really nice
Because we haven't really had a festive special before
Where it sort of carries on from the previous one
So it's quite a nice interesting idea
To pick up from that
To have casual viewers who watch it at Christmas
I thought, oh I watched that last Christmas
I didn't watch much of the rest of the series
But I'm watching it again
I wonder if
If Christmas hadn't been cancelled as spectacularly
As he was
If we might have got the third one
It's really lovely for the Dalek so much
I don't care
I've done like it
Oh you're mad
It's my favourite of the free
Is it? I don't know
It's a battle over that one another day
Don't you worry
Here he is he's going to get that
Oh he's had a few too many
A few teas too
It's not the Rehipno again
Oh god
What's that woman doing in that burger van in Laibos
The truckers were hitting me
Who's she working for
Well I suppose Chris North
North yeah
You make sure you're there
On the A42
In the T
He's dead now
I think he's dead
He must be dead right
He doesn't come back see
So he's shoved in the back of there
What is to him
He was so christian people can't do economic character beats
But I really like the woman just going
Oh how is your mum and he's like yeah yeah
She's alright
Don't ask too much
And then there's the picture of her in the car
And that's all you need to know
This was during COVID but they shot it a long time before
I was thinking oh is it because these mums
Is this sort of a COVID reference
Do you see the state of that Dalek
I'm not
Oh god are you ever had a morning like that
I have a few
Probably
What's your tip all by the way
My tip all well I've got a little bit of a souvenir
Blonk going on down here
Blonk, cheers
I don't drink at all actually
That's what I put the BWSR work
I don't know what I'm saying
Yeah
Lee Haven Joes
Where do I know that name from
So he did all from 55
Oh Banger
I love it
I love it
This is where people are going
Oh it's this man Luke Collins
He doesn't like even the Daleks
He does like all from 55
The only reason I don't like even the Daleks
Is because I think it's a bit creepy
Oh but I'll tell you what I've got about this place
What have you got?
You don't want to know
You really don't
No I was joking in by the way
I do love all of this
A kind of desktop meetings between
Jack Robinson and the Prime Minister
Yeah
I mean yeah
Chris North
I mean obviously
Pretty severe allegations made after this
Yeah Chibnault must have been like
Paul RCD
He had to contend with Baramun
and
Paul Moffey has had to contend with Neil Gaiman
Yeah
And now this
Yeah now this
You still talk about separating the art from the artist
Can you
I don't know
It does put a pretty big stain across this
Like
I have had that discussion quite a few times
I'm a massive buffy fan
And I know way indoors
What a bully towards women
Just we even clearly was
But I still love buffy
So it's like I kind of have to
Separate it because I love that show
And with things like this where it's so many people
Involved in it you think you
If you sort of cancel it you're then taking away
I suppose
Every actor, every talent in it
Oh the Dalek
Oh he's sexy bastard
Great design isn't it
There's a few people you know a few crowds
I wouldn't mind jetting like this
And guessing now
Wasn't that
Do you remember Boris Johnson bought those
He bought those water cannons
To use
Is this taking a piss out of that
I don't know maybe it is
Because it's sort of make a big thing about water cannons
I love this where he says about the
We're not actually using sygas gas
And it's just the demonstration
They're all willing participants in this
Size and they've been paid to turn up and just pretend to be
Be tortured
Be tortured yeah
I love it when the CS gas
And he's like we're not obscuring CS gas
And Chris and off says it would have been fun
I don't know what to do
I mean uh Joe I think he is
Deliciously evil
I mean he's such a cartoon character isn't he
And that's my sort of villain
Who's just in no way plausible
But really fun to watch
I mean like my favourite of all time is Harrison Chase
So
Do you like reading your green cathedral?
Green cathedral yeah
I love it
Yeah he is great Harrison Chase
But like I don't know if we get enough
Recurring
Sort of slightly villains in the new series
And I was happy to get one that
Obviously we've got the master of all the time
But that sort of gets a bit dull
After a while
Well they do love Sasha Duane
I think he is the best one of the best that we've had
Like Sasha Duane for different reasons you know
No no no he's a
God he's a very intense actor isn't he?
It's so good
He's kind of magnificent
Jodie is really good
We haven't seen Jodie yet
Apart from the flashbacks
Yeah yeah
How long are you?
Nearly ten minutes in
Yeah we haven't seen her
I mean it's obviously it's an extended length isn't it this one
It's a long one
They say don't they that she's been in the prison for how many years is it?
Quite a long time
Jack says he spent like 19 years trying to get to the cell next to her
And she's doing terrible crimes he said
Oh my god
I don't want to think about it
She says it's been a difficult few decades
Okay but the only reason I think this works
And I really have issues with the 100 billion years
Or however long he was in that puzzle box for in heaven sent
Hunting is that she's got stuff to deal with here
So maybe she's not trying to break out of that prison
Because she's got a lot to think about
Yeah don't yeah I think that's it
Because a lot of people say oh you know
Having having Jack a man break her out is that bad
She's the doctor where can she break out sooner
But I think it's showing that she's been gone through real trauma
You know the what's going on in the time as children and stuff she's learned
She's just sort of depressed
She's stuck here
She doesn't want to break out she could do what she wanted to
She's probably just processing it all
There's a really great scene
Later in the episode between her and Ryan
It's basically her goodbye scene with Ryan
Because it's a group scene at the end
Where she tries to fop off
What she's been through at the time as children
And he says no
You're going to tell me about it
And it really is weighing on her
So even though she's had all of this time
She hasn't quite come to terms with any of it
I love this prison stuff
It's shot so beautifully
I think that's great as well
I love her hair in this and the outfit I think is brilliant
And then all the little easter eggs
You get in here so good
It does feel like
When she goes into the room with all the cages
It looks huge
But again like I
Again I misremember
I was thinking that this was shot during lockdown
Because I thought this must be some kind of satire on lockdown
That face that she's got
She's looking out the window
That is literally my face for about two years
Oh
Well I can go out from going for a run
I'm working retail or I was still working
I know actually
I was probably my saving grace actually getting out every day
Do you see in that long shot there
What was that bristling sort of huge green thing
What is that like
I paused it early on that looking
Like nude as a pating
Is a sicker axe
I love the pating
So good
You think he'd be able to eat the whole prison really
Surely he can just eat through everything
Yeah
And then she reads herself a little bedtime story
Oh yeah
Many things about this episode have not aged
I know it's not aged well
Unless you're a huge fan of JK Rowling of course
In which cases you'd be delighted to hear that the doctor reads himself
Harry Potter to sleep
No
I don't think so
I was never a fan of Harry Potter before
All of this other nonsense
No
It's hard because my son's quite likes it
And it's really hard thing to sort of separate again the art from the artist
Because I just don't really care for it
Or have use obviously
But yeah
It is tricky isn't it
And I think increasingly so
Because there are
Social media means we are more privy
To create the stories and opinions
Than ever before
And I think it's really hard to musicians
You know Nicki Minaj recently
I know
Next to Trump go in
A gold card
And immigrants saying oh it's all right
You know that the immigrants have been separated from their kids
That's fine
Yeah I mean I know people who listen to her music they were just appalled
Yeah
Oh look at this
It's like Brooks High Clothes sitting at that they've got to
I know
What were they thinking of when the people in that close thinking of when the suddenly this house turned up
And
Do you remember like the end of the time as children
There were those two sort of cyber war refugees who come back
Oh yes the one that
Graham was slowing with
Where did they go
Somewhere in the 21st century on earth
Not Judy Graham playing her you know
She'd be all right
She get a lot of work she's probably an actress now
She's not playing Ruby White in the Sarah Jane adventures
You never know
Yeah
Oh it's such a gorgeous design though that TARDIS
Do you see those roundels
I mean I like Joe this TARDIS
I'm not too sure about those enormous
Penises that come down and attack her every time
Hello
Oh you like enormous penises do you
He doesn't
I do like this
It's sort of retro back to Hartnell but it's not quite
It's sort of what you might remember it
That being
What do you think is happening with Yaz here
I think she's been a detective
You know maybe that's what she's reverted to
She's a copper by trade
So maybe she's doing what she knows
How and she's just trying to work it out
I mean if I was her
And I had a TARDIS
An infinite size TARDIS to be
I might just live in there
And be happy
I mean she they seem to imply that she's
Sleeping there on the floor
Which means I think it's gone beyond the
Even a bit too
I think she's in love with the doctor
And she will keep working
Until she gets her back
There's a scene in the haunting of Villa Diodati
Which is what three episodes back
Where Yaz is talking about someone
Especially in her life
That she has strong feelings for
That and then this
And then obviously we go into flux
And it all blossoms
Yeah yeah yeah
Because if you're her you don't
You know we're like oh she's been gone 10 months
That's not that long
If you're her and you think she's never coming back
Potentially
You might have lost her forever
This is a gorgeous shot
The shot in the woods
In the forest
That long shot back with the lights on the sides
Look at that
I'd be so lucky
Crying do you know it's all the wood
See you see you
Wait if one's married you know
I lost my wedding ring
Where does it lose it?
In the woods
She ain't going to listen to this
She ain't got bloody oak
I've already got enough wives coming after me
You know when these things go out
Oh
But though I also like as well
That there is an entire plot
Going on here away from the doctor
And away from the companions
That sort of builds and builds
I mean it's slightly
Obviously
The joe character here
The prime minister is the only person
We see from the government
Or any of that at all
They're really economical with the cast
If you think about it
If you go beyond the
Then there's not that many other people
No it is
But like people are expensive aren't they
I think yeah
You know lots of speaking parts
It's really expensive
And they're just putting the money in other places
What at the end of this
In what's huge scale
With two lots of Daleks fighting each other
Poor he doesn't give it to us
That's so good
Yeah
There's some people with guns turn up
But then they just walk away
I mean I don't want to pick it in too much
But it's just only in there
God I'm getting, look at these guns on the streets
I'm getting ice
No flashbacks
Sorry sorry sorry
How horrific isn't it
Just horrific
Not yeah
Whoever said that they should be allowed to carry guns
In America
I need to shoot in frankly
Do you think like
How are they carrying guns here in England
Yeah where is a very rich man
You know
Yeah
So they've got no TARDIS
We've got no doctor
I love that when Graham goes
Sardis isn't it
Do you know
I thought that was sharder when I first watched this
I know I did as well
Well they don't say confirm or deny otherwise
I don't know
Because who did you do in working for
Are they working for the time laws for division
They
Sally Aver I believe
The great time lord war criminal
Yes, yes
Professor Cronotus
Yeah
What she eat in there
Did you see that?
I don't talk a bit about this
It's Mississippi Modpie
That's a bit of chocolate brown
That's something then
Oh yes, Jack
There's less
I think there are less problematic things with John Barrowman
But
Enough of a problem
That you still wince of it when you're watching it going
Okay
But as soon as you came on
I did almost sort of
Punch the exit
It just lifts
Immediately
It gets really exciting
The way I was to find her here
With this, whatever this ball thing is
But
Okay, so they walk through all the ways
And a massive bubble
Well, suddenly now she's being the doctor again
You know, quip in
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I love, sometimes there's something
Are these lines directed at
Captain Jack? Or are they directed at John Barrowman
It's like
What about the surgery and things
Yeah
Actually, I just howled when
Yes, when
It's not your needy, what does she say?
You need a lot of
Like your needy
That is not aimed at Jack Hong
That's all right
Exactly, yeah
I'll buckle it that you do nowhere out
Let's go
Yeah, how did you smuggle that in here?
Did you really want to answer that?
I've got a little look
A little look she gives
And that's me saying that
I mean, you want to pull that
Laser out of his ass in
Okay, great
I mean, he must have been
Ducing, right?
It was very clean
Sorry, sorry
You know what you're getting into right coming into this
Yeah, yeah, yeah
But a bit of pulp fiction with Crystal Walk in these sticks
I stuck that watch at my ass
Quite rude
Is this where Leo goes, yes
I've been doing it a bit of a sideline
In garlic mutants
Yeah, yeah
And he has a go to the need for being too clever
And he says that's why people don't like experts
Which is that I think Michael Gove said that
Oh really
And it become like a phrase
That was, you know, we don't like experts
I think we do quite like experts
I hear a lot of people say that
Chippers can't really do political satire
I just think he's more subtle about it than
Yeah, yeah, you know
Then the big fat windbags in
Downing Street in Avions in London
Yeah, yeah, I mean, I do find that fun as well
But I mean, obviously
There's obviously slightly more subtleness here
It's like, I script away this bit of residue
And then I just had to cultivate it
And grow it
And look what I've got
Yes, beautiful thing
And that started growing, I'll be like no
No, burn it, kill it with fire
Immediately
The scene that I thought was really strong
Was when he takes it down to the incinerator
And I thought
That's not sympathetic
Yeah, I was like
Please don't burn that bloody thing
Now I love the scene too
Where it's the blue and it's dark
And you can almost not see their faces
It's shot so beautifully in the red and the background
It's just so beautifully done
It's probably quite cost effective
Because it's just lighting it with colours
But it's gorgeous
One of my big criticisms of RTD2
Was that the contrast
Just went up on everything
Everything was so bright
Like we were talking before about the time hotel episode
It's so bright
There's no atmosphere in it at all
Remember that moment
Where sort of from RTD
We started to get to like Matt Smith
And they started to turn the lights down
With this shot here
It's beautiful with the blue and the red around it
You know the trouble with
When you got to Capaldi
They found filters
Suddenly everything was going through
Ugly blue, brown, grey filters
I was like
Whereas these are lit
Very cinematically aren't they
All light and sources within the set
Yeah, it's gorgeous
It's really useful
And that sort of face-huggery Dalek
Which I just, it's so good that
He's found something new to do
Is something that is, you know, from 1963
That he's come up with
A chibner effectively to do something
Is the body horror, the kind of
The possession, the whole new thing
To make Dalek's scary again effectively
In revolution
Revolution, revolution
Not evolution
Not even
Not even
In the last garlic episode
When, cos I'm Charlotte Rich
She was that first scene
When you see the tentacles going over
And then music's rising
And then Nick Brexit's doing a really
Sinister type voice
I was like, Chibbers, you got it
You just got it
And in this, the guy plays Leo
I think does a really good job when he's possessed
The sort of little flicker of the eyelids
And the slightly different sort of mannerisms
Yes, it's horrible
It's horrible, he's going to kill it
He's basically, he's grown this thing
And then it just grabs him
You deserve this, Leo
All right, yeah
Oh, now
I'm going to give you 15 million points
If you can tell me
The line that he says to his wife
Yeah, I'll kiss the children for me
You know, tell them what I love them
What's that from, from Plastico
And a fear?
Oh, 15 million points for that man
It's so cos it the director in hand a fear
I'll be closer
No, you may have turned your back on Dr. Hofer
It's a sizable period of time
But it never left you at all really
Never left me
No, it's so good
It's so good this
I don't know whether it's a direct call back to it
But it has the same kind of intent
It's doing the same thing, isn't it?
Well, I mean, he's not
Taking over by a darling in hand a fear
But God, that mute is so gross
So gross, this sort of legs around him
It's sort of pulses
Really like the TARDIS lit like this now
But it's sort of not on
That kind of like dark blue light
It's really nice
I kind of like that
I felt the as time went on
They just figured out how to light it
Better and better
Initially, it was a bit tricky
And they didn't really know how to shoot it either
When you got to stuff like
Do you remember the
When it was some different colours
Really like, remember when she first walks into it
And goes monument
It's like a lovely shot
It's sort of hazy, sharp
And it's dark in the background
You haven't yet seen it and she wanders in
It's like a really cinematic, beautiful, beautiful shot
I don't
I think as TARDIS's go
I don't know whether I
I think I like it, I really like it
But I don't know if I love it
I definitely don't hate it
What's your favourite then?
Yeah, I do, that's probably my favourite
The new series then
The new series, yeah
I know, I'm not sure I can top that very first one
You know, when they're going in an awfully sharp
I just think
I know, it's so big as well
Not all of this
Before it's just like a photographic projection on a wall
The grey and William's here, we're in a cupboard
And a black cupboard, you know, we're safe in it
Yeah, or you get to like, Carmel
And we're just not going to use it at all
But you imagine that vapor is coming out of it
It's a humidifier on the console
If you like vaping
Oh wait, yeah
Cherry vapes
Oh, we both said cherry
Delicious flavour
Yes, it does
So Jack here is in his prison overalls
And then the next scene is in his
Captain Jack costume
Yeah, he nicked off to look
To the wardrobe room from the Christmas Invasion
Yeah, that's awesome
And there may be
Oh, do you remember the preview
For this in Doctrine magazine
All Chippers gave him
Was this picture of the three of them
No, it was tape, I was like
I mean Chris, come on, you had so many images
You could have given them from this
Like from the prison or all this
I tell you what though, this scene
When I was a kid, I used to dream of this
Like, landing in your
You know, landing the front room
Got you
Get up off your sofa and go and have adventures
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's so good
And I love seeing it in like a domestic setting
Like this, it's so
When it lands
Look at all this lens flare
They got rid of this pretty quickly
Yeah, I mean, greatly
It's, I know, it's really sort of
Digital, not real
Hello, JJ Abrams
Star Trek movies, I've got a lot to answer for
I know
It went out favour quite quickly
Fox
It's a slight moment of gay panic there on this face
I don't have any a little bit
I don't know if he's sort of maybe going to go with it
But yeah, it's shoving the doctor
She is livid
That's what my cats are like by go away for a weekend
I didn't eat for two days
Yeah
Oh, dear
I love this team though, I really do
Well, I mean, I love Dan as well
Yeah, I don't have a little family
Yeah, it felt like a little family
You can imagine them recording all this together
Stying together
It's really good
They're so, yeah, I do love them
And I don't, do you know what?
I think some people sort of slightly worry that
Jack is a bit crowbarred into this
But I quite like it and I quite like the time
When he comes into it
Well, because I think yes, he's going through stuff here
So the chat that they have in Japan
Yeah, where he says to it
It's a really well script
If I ever said one
Huge favorable thing about christian law
Is those one-on-one dialogue
It's the character moments
He can absolutely ace those
Some people are not
I know, some people aren't too
But I like them, I think it gives it time room to breathe
People like a very operatic
Characterisation in the news
And this is a little bit more
So it's all good
Yeah
In this green thing, you can hear a little noise in the background
There's exactly like in Genesis
Where Tom looks through that little green window
And the little noise
I thought they used the same one or not
Look at the size of this play
Now, is this a
An enormous space that they filmed in
Or a due discus of CGI
I think it's CGI
I think so too
Compare it to when they did
Something similar in New Earth
With all those booths
Yeah, we've come so far
Oh, I do love that as well
It's just a bit where she goes
Yes, we're going to go nuclear now
And I've got quite a good plan
I was thinking
I've bloody loved that for you
You're going to bring a load of darlics
These were Jack mentions rose
Well, yes
Oh yeah, I can't die
I'm not sure why you had to mention
She was in a parallel universe like
No, yeah
All right, Mr. Wiki
Yeah, just a full of exposition
But I like how he quite likes
Yes, doesn't he? I think
He sort of takes a shine to her in this
The character
Oh, Jack
Yeah, I mean, I'm Brian's there
What's he doing?
Brian
I don't know
Man, he always just done a good BBC comedy
Yeah, I think he has a few things
Tussin Cole
I was sort of having a look at his Wikipedia
And he has done some stuff
So I think there's a bit in this
You never have the beautiful conversation to get the later on
I think that might have been a reshoot
I can't hear
He was doing something else at the time
Which is why he's wearing that beanie hat
I just adore the fact that his last shot
Is even falling off the bike on that hill
Oh, why couldn't they let Brian go?
No
I was loving Brian
Oh, so you love it every time you see
So he goes, oh, not you guys again
You guys again
No, I haven't quite got my head around 3D printing
Perhaps you could give me a crash course now
I don't think I have either
It's sort of
I don't know if you can
Can you 3D print something this big
It looks like
I've got these dialects laid out
Like it's some kind of
Doctor Who fan sort of event
With a little bit of tape around them
Like, oh, have a look at this
No, I'm going to sound like I'm real simple to Luke
So apologies
Is it making things out of lasers
No
Okay, it's like a very thin little stringer plastic
Which is sort of like laid down
Find lay, I think
Well, there you go
Keep saying they're empty here
Like, these versions will remote control
Yeah, I think
I think they did the sort of the test
With the previous dialect story
Because that didn't have anyone in it either
And it went so well, they were like, right
Let's have an army
Yeah
Slightly unfair for your dialect operator
Oh, and there was some really economic
A bit of backstory as well
Where he says to
The Prime Minister
Oh, all of my car factories
That got shut down
Now we've found a good use for all of the equipment
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Which again, another bit of satire
So I think it wasn't like the Sunderland Nissan plant
Or whatever was going on at the time
I think there was something going on
Okay
It goes
This is the great
He hasn't only had a facelift
Does he? He's also had an act of ink transplant
As well, I think
In this John Barrowman
He hasn't it
Oh, of course he has
He wrote cyber woman, didn't he?
And day one, messed up
So never
That's sarcasm
By the way, I can still remember the night I went out
Oh god
I went, let's be done
And I haven't really watched torture since then
But really, you know what?
Mid-seasonally wrote one called countryside
Which was about a load of cannibals out in the countryside
Yeah
It was the best horror they did
Yeah
So he's hit a myth, but when he hit
Yeah
I mean, I really love this acting now
He's a really nice scene
But there is something like Jack sort of says
You don't get to choose when the doctor leaves
And you think, well, Ryan and Graver are literally about to do that
At the end of the episode
This is also about the end
Yeah, you was wrong, Jack
I do love though that he says to her
Do you know what? I mean, how many people are there?
And we're the lucky ones
And we're the ones to get the travel with the doctor
You don't really think about it that way, do you?
You think anyone could be there?
No, actually, there's only about 60 of them
Yeah, exactly, yeah, yeah
And again, it's some of these things, you sort of think
Are you saying this to the character or to the actor?
Yeah
Yeah
But man, it's no slouch
No, she's so good
She is really good
I think she, when she's in situations where she has to be fearful
There's scenes in the flux
And got a village of the angels
And Annie for the Daleks
Where she just has to act with like a single tear
And she's shaking
I think she's compelling to watch, Amanda Kiel
A little bit like sort of the way Elizabeth Sladen could do
Yeah
Or Tara, but also Braver at the same time
And she can do comedy as well
Do you remember when they were coming in on those
Rope pulleys in flux
Yeah
Hello
So I'm guessing that this isn't Japan in real life
And this is Cardiff
Do you only want a bit that gives me a slight sort of suspension of disbelief issue
Maybe because it looks a little bit like the building around the corner from where
Chris Nothis
Oh really?
The reason for that
Do you know it's a square and a scum
I love the square and a scum
I love the fact she's not impressed either
She's like, all right, whatever
Do you need a lot?
Do I?
Do you not remember when this went out
I remember it was all over his social media
Right, filming himself
Watching the episode start
Yes, I'm back on the TV again
I was meant to be a bit of a surprise
But he was basically all over his social media
I love that
Are you feeling insecure because you seem to need a lot of praise?
I have a sneaky suspicion
Because I think
Moffit was very savvy behind the scenes
That he knew what was coming
I think there was a reason why Moffit didn't hire him
He should have just tipped
Chris the wink
There's a shit storm coming
Yeah, also we've got the Prime Minister at the front of Downing Street
Which is something we sort of
Got, well, not outside Downing Street
We've got the used to during lockdown
A lot of Prime Ministerial broadcasts
What do you imagine this is?
It's just sort of the sound they built in the studio
Yeah, I don't know or whether it's
Because there are sort of a couple of number tens
They used, don't they, I think
Which is my Boris, have we just shot there
With a few Daleks?
We're going to be at the Tower of London next week
So we can just come real and
But she's great
So Harriet Walter, who plays Joe here
Apparently her uncle is Christopher Lee
Really?
Oh my god, I'm going to have a look now
I can see, I can see
I mean, it's in great performance
She's not sort of gnashing the scenery like Christmas
So it's a different sort of villainy
She just wants to be in charge, doesn't she?
Well, the annoyed thing gets a trip in the TARDIS
That feels like something that should be
For your favourite character's rather than
Chris North
I fucking love the ending though, where he goes
Yes, I, you know, put myself out there
To defeat the Daleks
Everybody, please, give me a knighthood
Yeah, yeah
Water twat
Oh, this was a great speech
Daleks were insidious and clever
Like, hey, they'll spread
Until they can't be stopped
Yeah
Oh, this is it, here's our clickbait scene
Yeah, the exterminating the Prime Minister
I mean, how many Prime Minister's
We killed in Doctor Who, probably quite a few
It was killed in Aliens of London, wasn't it?
They found him banging up at the cupboard
Yeah, and I suppose
The master's Harold Saxon
Oh, we ain't got a shot
Yeah
This is probably the most public execution though
Yes, yeah, on live TV
As it says on the screen, live at Dalek Street on the BBC
You're bashing the papers on the next slide
By the way
Defensive attack
A little flashback here
Maybe to the planet Neckross
Feeding
Oh, yeah
Dead bodies being turned
That's grizzly as well, isn't it?
I mean
The Daleks in Chignol's time
Oh, if you'll forgive me
Fuckers, aren't they?
I mean, they're horrible
What's the first time in years?
As they should be
I mean, this has to be like
Yeah, with this creeping dark
Like, grizzly
Up the side of the thing
Imagine being a five-year-old watching this
Look behind you
On New Year's Day
Starting on the New Year
Face Huggers, come on
What's the first time I've had Face Huggers in the Christmas
Or Festive Special
Back
Oh my
Otherwise, it doesn't take them over
Maybe they're sort of
I don't know, dormant or something at that stage
They're not fully developed maybe
Oh, look, I love them
They're so good
Chrissy
Was you talking about Lars Christmas there
Yes, yes
Yeah, that was a good episode
That was good
Yeah
It's going to be a good episode
I love that once they all start going bad
And killing people
She still tries to bluff it, doesn't she?
Yes, absolutely
It's all right, don't worry
Technical issues, you know
I love the fact that they just indiscriminately kill people
It's properly evil
They don't just, they don't sort of go
Negotiate with people
They're just, we're going to exterminate anyone and everything
Murder spree
And I like the fact as well
And the gold Daleks turn up
And then they're just impurities
To be swept aside these things
Yeah
A bit like remembrance again
The whole sort of Daleks of a war
You are so deep at this point, Luke
Or
Or is that lovely scene with Ryan
Actually, her hair is a different length
Yeah, I think this is a reshoot
Possibly
Because they did like a test shoot
During COVID I think
I don't know if you can see
Whether they could do it safely
And I think maybe this was it
So this was a little bit after I think
I don't know if it's certain
But yeah, you look ahead
It's different, isn't it? It's longer
Really pleased that you have this moment though
And again, it's just a quiet gentle character
But where he goes basically, you know
I've had ten months at home
I love my story
I've established here now, yeah
I've sort of made peace with my dad
He'd like to keep a track and all the goplets
For Matthew Waterhouse and Tom Baker
Go on
Just the fact that those characters
Having that conversation, you wouldn't usually have
Those characters together
And you get those with all of them
Oh, I see what you mean, yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a bit weird
It's those two
Yeah, I think you don't often get many scenes where it's just Ryan
And the doctor
No, but because he's going like it's kind of necessary
Yeah, I just like that he calls her out
He goes, no, no, we ain't pushing this to the side
That's what you always do
Tell me what happens
It's strange that you don't get
Sort of any extra agrarium though
Although she does have a lot of moments with agrarium
Like in those scenes
Yes, that's amazing, yeah
Bloody love agrarium, you know
He's so good
Those ridiculous laser shoes
Yes
But then it's something like Punjab
Where he has to
Get prem ready for the wedding
And knowing that he's going to die that day
And he can't he breaks my heart
Do that kind of humour
And then the seriousness at the same time
And then gladiator
Well, so you know
Nice
The chance
I was always hoping it was the woman
You know, when they show you who it is
So the chance is always the name
Oh, she was fabulous
Now is this the first time that
So the conversation they're having
Is this the first time she's opened up about the fact that
She's not who she thought she was
I think so
Yeah, because she didn't see any of the
Varves in the top of the shield
No, no, and she hasn't done it yet
So
It's sort of quite special I suppose that she does
Hope not to rhyme
I just don't buy it when people say
She can't do some serious acting
Or does she wasn't given any
Opportunities, she was given plenty of opportunities
Yeah
I mean, it would be a bit of a rug pull, right?
If you found out that
I mean, if you come to terms with it now
You said you were a bit unsure at the time
But the whole time was short
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Because it just felt like
Such a lot of new law to be created
And sort of dumped us
I just want to enjoy a good story
But I think now
Yeah, definitely come to terms with it now
I like to think that
The three biggies, you know, Davies
They're going to leave their stamp
So R2D wiped out Gallifrey
And then Moffit was like
Well, I'm going to insert in a doxer
That you never knew about
And then Chippell was like
Why, I'm going to rewrite the beginning
Of Doctor Who, completely
I mean, you can just see in Lavigne
Getting more incandescent with every twist, can't you?
Is there a redo with AI?
Oh, have you seen him?
Oh, boy
No, you're too nice to say
Oh, yeah, I'm too nice
I'm too nice
I'll be the picture, don't you want
Oh, but I like the fact that it's Ryan
That sort of tells her, like, you are the Doctor
Basically, throughout this conversation
She sort of
It starts to go in there, it's fine
You are who you are
And I like that we reached that conclusion
At the end of the vanquisher, she's got that watch
Right, that has all the answers in it
And she goes, ah, fuck it
Like, you got to go also
Yeah, yeah
Did they swear this much on who called it a corner
Oh, no, I didn't
Sorry Luke
It was quite hard though
Because I was just going to see that
I want to slip out the
I think you're pardoned
Oh, I got a John Barrowman on this call
A cancel, we don't cancel
No, that's all right
I mean, I'll put out thousands of these
Give it time
Did you see that you heard Subtile there?
Warp for warp
I love it
Attach them to detail
Yeah
And of the colour changes across this next scene
From the green to the ultraviolet
I think
Beyond the scene on the bridge
Oh no, then the bit where they were going the time
I think it's just balls that are walls action now in it
But the bit where they were all too bad
Is too
Attach high point
We're just coming back from their holidays
We've just been off to Tenerife for a few days
Yeah
Coming back through passport control
Serves them right
I can't afford it
It is interesting here though
Where with Leo
She doesn't sort of, you know
Is that whole thing in
Resolution
Where she's like, I will come and save you
I am going to save you
So much of that here is there
He sort of just dies
And it's like, oh, sorry Leo
You're dead now
You'll be on redemption
You are right though, he's giving a really good performance
Isn't it the way he's holding himself
He was in them, did you ever see misfits
He was in that
No, the skull was it
Yeah, he was sort of in that form
I mean, they said, don't worry
We'll sort of CGI in all these tentacles later
You just carry yourself
That pack was a bit too heavy
I was like, Donna were in turn left
You remember?
Yeah, yeah
Oh, you're right, yeah, look
I can see the purple creeping in there
Yeah, it creeps in
Yeah, which I sort of, it's sort of obvious when you realise it
But I don't really notice it don't think at the time
I think it's not a performance
That anyone comments on Leo in this
He's great
Good, he's really good
What did you do, it's not an episode
It's not a nice sort of, I'd forgotten about it
Really, I think
I hadn't sort of gone back and watched it again
Really, but I really enjoyed it
Look, it wasn't enough
That he just told them that they are feeding liquidised humans
To the darling clones
He pulled a pipe down
And allowed us to see it dripping all over the floor
Drinking all over the floor
Literal human beings
Like a pure mate
Thank you Chris, yeah, happy new year to you too
Yeah
You know, it's so purple now, I could be watching
Sontara and Stratagem and the Poison Sky
Oh my god, that was
If only
Oh yeah
But again, this use of colour
It makes it so distinctive
But you know, it isn't
Millions of pounds on CGI
It's just a real world practical effect
That looks beautiful
Oh, now he gets a big smile on his face
I don't know, we've already thought about that, Doctor
Don't worry
I mean, doesn't Chris North say, yeah
Oh my god, this is a PR disaster
People are looking to die or anything like that
Somehow, he's got such a silver tongue
Somehow, he manages to turn the ghost again
Yeah, yeah
Involving it at all, somehow, he just saves the day
I can only think that there was supposed to be a third
That, like him as Prime Minister
And they were going to bring him down somehow
Yeah
Oh, here we go
Here they go, they turn red
And just blast random people
I tell you, love the POV shots of Daleks
I love it
We think back to the remembrance
The one in that is so good
The sort of the green shot
We shoot the guy underneath the truck
Kipping goes flying backwards
Into the tarp all in, doesn't it
Oh, even more sexy, look
It's the POV shot plus a Dalek extermination blast
Plus the skeleton
Plus the X-ray shot
Yeah, oh god, let's random people
Policemen with machine guns now being gunned down
Oh
Yes, Taurus are very annoying
Kill the lot of them
Oh my god, I used to work some of it was near Westminster Bridge
And having to cross that every day in the centre of town
To get some lunch at a prayer and be like, please
I'm done with the Taurus
Could you move out of the way?
Did you think that it was, in fact, unit
Yes, on the south bank of the river
Yeah
Probably we watched by the pigeons, you know
The surveillance cameras
They put the batteries in
I love this though, because the actress
She doesn't actually want to do a dramatic fault of the floor
She sort of knows
Oh
Oh, she's a dame
Oh my god, I don't know
Oh no, she was out of shot, she just sort of fell out of shot
The lift got wet
They speak down the barrel on the lens of the camera
Or humanity
Or humanity is a weird exterminated fabulous
It is great
What do you want on doing this though
It's quite sort of an RTD issue
A bit of that I think
That's sort of some real familiar setting
I mean, you've said that a couple of times throughout this right
And I think Chivers does have a massive hard on for RTD
If you look at his era
He does like, you know, the G2
And he does like bringing things back from that time
I do not object at all
Because I love RTD one
So
Oh hello, we've gone from purple to green now
Back to green
Are they bloody rainbow in?
They've gone, they've transported off
And it's gone back to sort of the same green
Oh, this is great
All that time in the cell I've been wondering who I am
I'm the doctor, I'm the one who stalks the Daleks
Yeah, it's very good
Is that a little bit of a flashback to the flat line when Capaldi says you know
I'm the one who stops the monsters
It's a sort of similar speech isn't it
What a ham, he comes flying out that time
It does nothing
I name you the boneless
The boneless
I mean, I don't know what
I can't be critical of that era
I can't be critical of what he was
I'm the same
I think there are decisions major in that era
I can't believe it, but he is full of flawless
Oh, great
Oh, here we go
This is what I was talking about earlier, wasn't it?
Yeah, yeah
I mean, I could think of sort of maybe
A few better plans
Like the apple selling
And how she goes, oh it's a new collection
Jack knows exactly what she's thinking straight away
We're going to bring in this sort of SS Nazi Daleks
To wipe out these sort of hybrid Daleks
And then we'll take out the SS Daleks
We're going to bring the Daleks to take out the Daleks
But then we've just still got Daleks to take out ourselves somehow
Yeah, and she goes, wouldn't that be exciting?
And we're like, yes
Yeah, it would be, yeah, it brings those up a Daleks back
I really like them
We can go to that bridge that Brunel made as well
But that will be even better
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, we get a Daleks saucer
Oh, look at the wire
And watch this camera angle
Woo!
I love it!
Woo!
And look at these sort of 60's
Globes they've got about the price
Yeah, so good
Great, and the heartbeat came in here
I was like, yeah, the darling heartbeat
Wow, wow, wow
It's a little bit of that that reminds me of
You know, resurrection
We're like Turlow's creeping around the
Oh, the ship
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
That is sort of creeping around this bit in a minute
You are ball-steep now, Lou
Alright
If this was an end of you
The job is yours
But if I did this call
I want you to have a mention to every single doctor who's story, okay?
Yeah, yeah
What are they called Death Squad Daleks?
Or Daleks, yeah
Not terrifying enough as they are
Death Squad, I mean, for kids, man
If I had heard that, I used to eat
I would have been like, fuck, Death Squad
I would have been like, fuck, Death Squad
It's just something
Oh, fuck
Because she sort of gets up and then looks at the sorcerer coming out of this guy
Who are the other Daleks, or his father?
That is a shot from the stolen earth right between the two buildings
Yeah, yeah
The special effects of CGI is so much more detailed now
Or Dalek invasion of earth
Oh, well done
Okay, I'm trying to get them all in now
Fuck it
This is so impressive
You'll be so deep by the end, you won't be able to get out
Good grief, stuck
Well, inception
Oh, prepare for maximum extermination
That's a bit more than regular
Extermination
Yeah, yeah
Hang on, isn't that a planet of Daleks?
A very blessed population
Oh, yeah, it is
Oh, look at this
I'm gonna cliff down some suspension bridge
How are they shooting above the bridge?
It must be, it must have been shot from a drone, I think
Because didn't some stuff leak from this at the time
Yeah, there was a lot of pictures on it
Yeah, let that shot from above
Yeah, it's so good
I mean, had so come on
Two Dalek armies fighting each other
Embrance, obviously
And revelation
Yeah, evil of Daleks
Oh, evil
You can waste any time, did you, when you was a child
All the way through all those books
All the way through all those targets
Yeah
Maybe if you do it in secret, like the way you have
Maybe your details go in even more
Yeah
Oh, look at this
Explosions
Yeah
And then he sort of got, she lets him go to the street
She lets Robinson go now
Just to sort of wander off
Oh my god, he's such a twat
All that product, he said
I can make a claim on the insurance
Yeah
He is irredeemable, isn't he
That's what I like about him
Yeah, he's just a shit, a massive shit
Oh, I'm backing him
Oh yeah, he heads down and says, hey, Daleks
Hey, it's me, leader of the earth
I mean, I genuinely, I feel like I am about four years old again watching this
I know
It's fun, it's fun, it's fun, it's fun, it tells us again on subtitles
And it's great, he's walking through the wreckage of all these blasted Daleks
And they've ridden it, do you remember back in the day when we had that sequence in
Doomsday where you had the Sidemen on the bridge and just a few sort of
Yeah, yeah
Spout from the gravel and that's all they could really do
Look what they can do now
I know, they're massacring people on the streets
Huge, set pieces on the Clifton bridge
Well, I do, I can't remember exactly
But I think the bridge might have been repaired at the time, whether that was a cover
Or not, or whatever it actually was being repaired at the time, but it's great
Great things used, obviously not that far from Cardiff
Yeah, but and also as well, it isn't London, it's another landmark
Which is quite refreshing
Yeah, definitely, I mean, I loved how they used Sheffield in this, I thought it was really good
There's a line there, there's a bit like a power of the Daleks
Where he goes, you know, you just sell out your own people since the Daleks
Yeah, of course I would
I mean, there's sort of flashbacks to that as well, isn't it?
Like, Leicesterson and, you know, the Daleks in this
And back to victory in the Daleks as well, the whole
Would you like some tea?
Do you have to mention that one?
My, Grace Well and his A and Sates
Yeah, when they go off to that Daleks ship, it just goes off a Clifton it
That is a bad Daleks
That is a bad ship, it's literally just an empty office somewhere
It is
I know, compare it to this in this one
Yeah
I wonder, you know, if we didn't explore those stairs, she's got there too much in that hotel
No, they don't really get out there very much, they don't
No, not like, you know, we sort of see Matt Smith hanging underneath the console
Oh, I love that
Even in Capaldi, you've got him at two different levels, but
Yeah, I know it's how we've skipped around the subject of Matt Smith on this call
I'm assuming you're a fan, most people are
Yeah, all right
You know, it's a good thing you're cute
But I like it all, I like it all
It's very lyrical that I don't like
That was a great line there, again, very economic
So all the SAS Daleks have destroyed all of Robinsons
Yeah, that's what I'm not gone
I'm not gone, yeah
I think we see one more, don't we?
We see one more, sort of like teleports, isn't it, on to the Daleks salsa
For a single thing, I'm not quite sure why it turns up
It turns up
What, you don't have a wonderful moment where it goes
Please, I am a Dalek, you could turn me into a real Dalek
Yeah
I mean, I do love it when Daleks are bastards to their own kind, you mentioned Planet of the Daleks
The bit where that supreme Dalek comes in, it goes
Yeah, a new bunch of useless cums
Right
And slow anymore
It's like the boss from hell, right?
Yeah, it sort of turns out, I've left you on this planet to get invisibility
And what have you been up to?
Oh, look, please, can we do Planet of the Daleks?
We'll have great fun with that
So good, you will have to put out with me talking about ice volcanoes or up to your notebook
I know, there's a lot of sticky substances in that
They're crawling about in it at one point
Oh, what a couple of hours
And then Joe gets sprayed, doesn't he?
Several times
So much to talk about Prentice Hancos, Bernhard Horsefall
I always liked what they, what they, you know, there's a bit where they sit and they eat like Milky Bars
Oh, I love a Milky Bars
Try me the effort for that
Red car in the blue
No, no, no, no, no, no, it's Milky Way
Oh, of course it will, sorry
Milky Bars was in the middle
The Milky Bars is strong and tough
Oh, he had a terrible life, didn't he?
That poor kid, apparently he got a bit like that little kid that was in the Phantom Menace
They got bullied out of school
Oh
Yeah
Other sort of personal laughs at that sort of thing
I love that you're so gentle, you're a bit sad for him
I'm sad for him
Oh, here we go, Robinson's gonna uh, uh, screw over the top to now
So, here's the deal
Yeah
It sounds like bloody yellow sugar now, don't they?
Yeah, the art of the deal
So uh, reference another American
Yeah, he really pops in now, this other darling
I mean, I do like the new drones
But I do still have a massive sauce bottle for the gold ones
You see those bronze ones, you're like, oh, they're really good
I mean, the paradigm dollic, so I mean, please, let's hear your opinion
Oh, that's awful, that's so awful
I really haven't got any dollic toys, you didn't get those ones, did you?
No, I used to have loads of them, loads of the sort of day pole, dapple ones
I got rid of all of those as well
Is that, that went with your whole
That went with all went, yeah
Did it end up?
It's sold a lot of it, bootfairs
Oh, okay, or chucked it
It's just gone, you put something down, right?
On a table and a bootfair now that's gone
Oh my god, they've just snapped them up
Gone, yeah, I probably sold them for like a couple of quid
I had a couple of, um, that's like the big sort of play sets
I had like Silvestra, Mel and the canine and the
And I remember like, you talking about the dapple ones
Yeah, yeah, you could care bloody
I'm sorry, it's gone, I had two children
And it's a shop that was shining down
In the early 90s, it's in the pink, Mel
Or the other one
Oh, they're best, the huge shoulder pads
Oh, beautiful
Did you have the Tardis?
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I got rid of it, I'm not sure I can even look at you right now if I'm honest
A couple of quid
I know, I can't get that back now
Don't you recognise my face?
I was that person
You're that person?
I wouldn't look up at the background
No, yeah, not Avernon back
Yeah
So you don't mind all these crystals about the Tardis
No, I quite like it, because if you think like the, um,
Sort of going back to the sort of Eccleston, Tenon
Sort of being slightly grown
Rather than, rather than sort of made
I quite do quite like that
I think the first time I sort of thought about that sort of thing like
I had an organically grown ship
People watch Farscape, Moira in Farscape
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, they sort of, and I do like that idea
I just don't know that
Those crystals look a bit cumbersome
When they're sort of
And it's quite hard to shoot round, I think they get
Better with shooting round them
They do block out a lot of the action
I promise you, I'm not doing this on purpose
But I think they look better
Arex than Half-Mast
You should not do that
Okay, it's when they just keep rising and folding it
It's a very odd effect
They don't do that shot too often
Twitchy
You sound like you talk from experience there
Not at all
What's going on here
Oh, it's snapping
Look at Chris North's face
Yeah, taking any of this seriously
No
Oh, so she's about to suck all the Daleks in
Indeed
I mean, look at the city scape underneath her as well
Right, if you see how we've gone from
Sort of the Battle of Canary War
From the Genesis Ark
And it's
Oh, look at that now, those little Daleks
I don't really find that
Yeah, you look at it
And in such detail
Yeah
And I love that they sort of fall us as well
By having the real, you know, her
TARD is background in there
I like to think of her running through the crowd
Oh, shit!
They're counting behind me
It's a good bait and switch, but you know
When I first watched it, I thought
What a waste of a TARD is they could have had too
Oh, yeah
And the Gallifrey's destroyed, you know
We're never going to get another one again
So we're still doing last of the time, Lords, aren't we?
Yeah, yeah
What did happen to that Gallifrey from Hellbed
Oh, yeah, the Master blew it up, didn't he
Yeah
Hellbed, Luke
Yeah, I'm not
Yeah
I mean, look at that explosion
All of those different mushroom clouds coming out
It's so easy
And then we're back in a sort of
Retro TARD is again
With a hologram, lovely hologram
That's something I always love seeing as a Dalek
In the TARD is, it's so incongruous
Oh, rare!
I love those at Lowe, I was like, Daleks
Are not pets
And then doesn't it just sort of scrunch up into a bowl
Yeah, like a ball of paper
I can only imagine that's quite painful
You know, if you're inside
Probably, if you're being squashed to an atom
But it is, I think he deliberately kept that towel this back
From the time his children
So he could use it in this story
Or he thought, oh, wait, that's a great idea
There must be sort of three TARDs
From the time his children
There's like the one that she sends the fan back in
There's a one she goes back in
And then there's the actual one
What happened to all the others
So one ends up in the house in Sheffield
One is this one that gets collapsed
And then the other one is the TARDest
So does it collapse into like a star or something?
Or...
It does, isn't it?
It's very tidy
Well, they got rid of those Daleks
We put all the Daleks in here
And now they've got...
Oh yeah, I hope it's acting deliberately as a decoy
Or if you want
Come on, Jodie, give me a slap
So this was around the time where Emily Makeless had just done the...
I don't know whether it was the time they filmed it
Where she'd done the Prince Andrew interview
Ah, okay
They were famous for that
So basically, don't be interviewed by Emily Makeless
I mean, this is so...
I mean, it's both post and pre
Trump, isn't it?
It's the Soviet Union, isn't it?
It's the Soviet Union, isn't it?
It was a barber in it
A barber in it, so...
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
Or a bydan, so you've sort of been good with this...
Sorry, yeah.
Or I... no, are you?
No, it's 2016 to 2020
So I think you aren't quite a bydan
You're almost there
Oh, so there's still Trump at this point
I mean, in the Erakters in the UK
it's so obviously...
that guy. He's sort of talking about his, you know, work on everyone, just have guns and
shoot people, you know, that's very Trump. I got a second. They were just watching News
Night, which is on like 10 o'clock at night, and now it's daytime. Oh, I don't know. Captain
Jack, sorry. What is this about? He's not about, is he? No, it's all in ADR, isn't it?
He'd be cancelled at this point. No, I don't think he had, but you don't see
Jodie's voice to me, but I only think like, was he going to play more of a role in 13?
I do hear that. He was supposed to be the Vinda character in 13. Yeah. Yeah. Was it, was
he actually going to join them on the Tardis at this point? Or I don't know. Maybe, maybe.
No, I don't know why. It's old though. It's old to not have a good buy, but then we're
quickly distracted with disc buy. So disc buy, which is really beautiful, I think. It's really
nice. He's really sweet. It's sort of, especially, you know, the whole thing of Ryan like
reconciling with his father, falling in love with his friends again, wanting to go, and then
Graham's sort of reaction to where he really doesn't want to leave, but he loves Ryan so much
that he goes, okay, I've got it. It's a bigger adventure to see what happens to you next
than it is to carry on traveling on the Tardis. I think it was such a savvy move to make
Ryan a really gentle lad, you know, like a really, a really soft, I don't mean that in a
negative way. No, no. And for him to now say, you know what, they need me, I need to be a man.
And people say he didn't go on a journey. He literally says to her here, I didn't know what I
wanted to do before this. Yeah. And then I do know what I want to do, which is the opposite of
the people I love. And she says, doesn't she? Like you, we won't, but Joey says like, you won't
be the same people after you've traveled it, traveled with us. And that definitely happens
with him. You can see them developing across across his time there. Well, did you hear there?
How quickly, yeah, I just went, yep, yep. I'm saying, I mean, she loves her. I'm telling you,
I would have been nice wouldn't it to see an all female Tardis crew for a bit, I think.
I do love it in the Halloween apocalypse when it's just the two of them. It's really hard.
At this point, I think if we know that John Bishop was coming in, I think this is trailer,
wasn't there after this terrible trailer of him getting out of the back of a van. Yeah,
yeah, plasterer that's never mentioned again. Chris, mate, you make good Doctor Who, but terrible,
your previews, your trailers that terrible. Yeah. Oh, I do love Graham as well, because Graham
was all ready to go with Joey and like, yeah, he wants to go for a grand plan or whatever they're
going to go off to. And he makes the right call. He says, no, I don't want to miss a single moment.
Of the incredible person you're going to be so sweet. Like, I get this. I don't get
what happened at the end of helping. I just don't understand how I'm supposed to feel about
that dough and a flying about in space. No, no, it's so abstract. But this is like real,
you can imagine real people going, yeah, I can't do it anymore. And I want to see my friends and
my family. And that matters to me more. And you can understand Graham, just his love for Ryan.
And there's a lovely beat where they just put their heads together, which could have been really
pony, but it's just queer. I mean, it almost is. It almost the line. It's on the high.
Let's have a high-tech moment. Come on. Yeah, I think they pull it off, because I can imagine,
I don't know when they filmed this in the sequence of the actual, you know, filming the film in
the show, whether this was close towards them leaving or not. But you can sort of imagine if they
spent years filming together. And then they did with that huddle. It's quite a, you know,
isn't it? And all those shoots out in South Africa as well, haven't they? Yeah, they've done a lot
together. Yeah. By all accounts, it was just laughs all the way as well. But imagine it was,
because I think that, you know, I haven't heard a lot of bad stuff about any of them, really,
about any of that kind of thing of that cost. All right, the only person who could, and it wasn't
even stroppy, they just went, oh, God. Joe, he's in a mood. Let's all cheer her up. Come on. Yeah,
yeah, but apparently everyone's just a daughter. Now, I quite like this. I know, you could probably say
this is a bit tweaked. I don't know. It is a bit tweaked, but I think they deserve it after,
you know, they've delivered the first female doctor on screen. It just is good.
And then if it's just in case, you know, you've got any adventures to go on,
you want to go to a volcano, maybe. Oh, when he starts flirting with ASA,
that's hilarious. It'd be great. Oh, it'd be great together, right? It wasn't until they
was flirting, right? That was like, fuck, so thrilled with the same age as him. I thought that
as well. I was like, oh, hang on a minute. This is a bit of an age gap here, girl. Oh, no, it's not.
No, she just puts her jacket on and suddenly she's like, yeah, yeah.
Tonight, I don't say this very often, but God, I love her in par at the doctor. That's so
feel-drid. I love it. I love it. I love that building straight into the Taldis, but for me,
she was the first probably companion experience. Oh, you know what? I hear that so much, though.
That was people's ear. I didn't realise, you know, that she wasn't from Harry Therland, you know.
Oh, don't listen to me. You're right. Just enjoy your nostalgia. I guess.
That's why I can't pass up poison. Yeah, we're getting back on the bike.
I do wish it was right off into the sunset on the bike. I think that would have been
quite nice. Oh, sorry. I mean, I just love people falling over.
Bless you. And he's got the yellow beanie on. I think didn't he have that at the start when
we first see it possible? I mean, it was a bizarre thing that this braxia, because occasionally,
it was plot relevant. And then occasionally, we're just forgotten about it all together.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Never mind. I just, I do, I genuinely think Ryan,
Graham is not underrated, because people love Graham. I think Ryan is quite underrated.
I think he's really underrated, because I suppose he isn't, you know, you've got the sort of
he has, the sort of fast men going on. Graham is Brad, Brad Lee's though. I suppose, yeah.
What more does he need? Exactly. Yeah. And then Ryan is, is, um, his ad trick, isn't he?
It's a hatchery. He is. Yeah. But I've been adored in a lot like a gracious.
No, no. I mean, I love this as well. The callback to the location from the woman who felt
worse. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, the funniest callback ever. Was, do you remember the end of
even the Daleks, the fellow from the crowd? Who the hell is that?
Can you remember the great man being a big towel? It was a big thing. He was back.
Crayman's back. I don't remember him doing anything in the woman who was worth.
Has he been at a convention? He probably has his name somewhere.
Oh, he called him Granddad. I mean, it took us a year to get there.
Sweet. Go on. Oh, no, you want to. I mean, this is sweet. This is sweet.
Look, I've got something in my eyes. I think I can see my mother in the ether.
Yeah. I mean, I do love a Sharon D. Clarke. I kind of wish that there'd been a bit of space
for her as well. Yeah, definitely. Yeah. I mean, a brave decision to kill off someone like her
in the first, indeed. Yeah. I mean, I mean, I did like the fact that then we dealt with the
emotional consequences of that for the year. And it was too men having to try and deal with it.
Yeah. Yeah. Which is good. Yeah. Yeah. I've realized it looks bad in that first episode.
But also as well as quite, I was quite pleased that he was willing to kill people off.
And for the next day, it was all saved with love and it's all one of the
things because everyone who dies in my first time is like, oh, well, they'll be alive next week.
Don't worry about it. Oh, there he goes. So I'm
The Gray comes running over the hill.
It would have been great. Oh, that was fabulous. I mean, I said to you in a message, didn't I?
I said, there's a lot of admin going on here. We're bringing Jack back because I think we're
setting him up for the next season. We're getting rid of Ryan and Gray. We're dealing with stuff
from revolutions. That's loads. It's sort of having to do. It's very planet of fire. There you go.
There's my first round. There we go. Yeah. Right. But within that, I just think it's seen to
seen. It is really entertaining. It's really entertaining. But it also does give those sort of room
to breathe. You get those emotional moments when some people don't necessarily like it, but I really
like those moments. I think some of the best moments for Ryan or in this, some great moments for
the years, probably, you know, John Baramon, probably some of his best moments at this time.
So he's acting. You said, yeah. So he's acting. I think cracking scenes in it and the adventure
sort of, you know, actiony stuff is good as well. So it's really enjoyable. And the fact that
it just feels quite cinematic. It feels quite big. It feels a treat for a festive special.
Well, you've just given me many, many reasons there as to why people should go and pick this
up off their shelf immediately. But I'm going to ask you to hone it down into three fabulous things
to recommend revolution of the diet. So you go first and then me and then you and then me
or back and forth, three things. Okay. One, lighting. I think the lighting on this is beautiful.
And I think it can, it's such a small thing, but it can make or break an episode and just the
use of kind of lighting this, I think it looks beautiful. And for, you know, it's not massive
vast CGI, massive budgets, but it's just, it's really immersive, gets you in the story and looks
gorgeous. And it's just shot beautifully. My first one is going to be, and I'm going to be very
clear when I say this, Jack Robinson, not Chris Knopf, yeah, Jack Robinson, the character,
utterly absurd. Yeah, let's say, let's say, let's accept it.
Nathan, um, Ratness in the UK. Yeah, yeah, just doing all those sort of dodgy meetings with the
Prime Minister, um, how he, what he wants to be involved sort of in the middle of the story,
how he sells himself out to the Daleks. And, and then how at the end, he tries to turn it,
turn himself into the hero. I mean, he's utterly loathsome in every way, but he comes in with
comedy, comedy lines that genuinely hit. And Chibnall's comedy can be hit or miss. Dare I mention
the Wi-Fi family. Um, so I, I just, I just think he's a great villain, and I loved him in the
Rackness UK. I think I like him a bit more in this. I think I like him more in this. I would have
liked to have seen his third episode. And yeah, I completely understand why we never got that,
but yeah, yes, yeah, moving on swiftly. From Chris Knopf, I think, um, for number two,
I'd have to go for probably Ryan. I know it's quite an obvious one, but as we said, you know,
he's under looked in other episodes. He's underappreciated. But that's seen between him and
Chaudy. It's beautiful. It's beautiful. Really nice. Um, the sort of, it really, it moves a story
along. It's sort of his attorney point where she realizes that she is the doctor regardless of
background and everything that's happened in the time as children. And it gives him a reason
to leave, essentially, at the end. It's just a nice, it's a nice, to set up the companion
departure. And I think really nice for him to get a scene like that before he leaves the series.
I think it's really good. Yeah, I think it was time for him to go. But I think it's a nice,
understated departure. We've had so many operatic ones in the past.
The, you talked about the BBC repeats, the BBC 2 repeats back in the 90s.
The Colleen was revelation of the Daleks on it. Remember watching that because my second thing
is the fact that I basically was, what would I have been then 13? So I was basically 13 and
again watching this because I remember seeing the, uh, the white and the grey Daleks in revelation
that blasted in the shit out of each other on the cross. And I loved it. And just watching it
here again in this. But on such a scale, that scene on the bridge is extraordinary.
Yeah, like basically turning me 13 is my second thing.
Like a massive explosion remembrance. We didn't have like the police got called out.
Some big thing going. Don't worry, we can do it in post now. Oh, thank you.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. But then you'd like you to say, when they were massacring people on the streets,
there was great flames blowing. There was bricks flying everywhere. Wonderful.
Just wonderful. It's good to be a kid for, you know, every now and then. It is.
And I suppose another point that is great about this is the design of those, the sort of the
defence-trained Daleks, because we've seen the junkyard one the year previously. But this one
the kind of the black and the silver and the blue lighting. I think they're really good, really good.
And my third thing is going to be, I think like all of the fun little Easter eggs you get
for out this, starting with, you know, that very funny joke, following on from Revolution.
This is the Star Wars joke at the Star. All of the fabulous creatures, the silence,
the weeping angels, the peting, whatever that enormous green thing is.
You know, he hasn't forgotten the tARDIS from the time this children. There's just lots of
lovely little Easter eggs rolling through this. Obviously, Chris and I'll be coming back. It's
something from the past. Yeah, I think Chippell knows how to push the fan buttons.
And he does it here. It's new years, you know. And I just think he got these specials. He understood
what he was doing. Big action, really entertaining, loads of energy, and then sort of getting you
kickstarting for the next series. I mean, I was desperate for Flux after this.
We have to wait a long time, didn't we? Really? Because we have to wait till Halloween. This is
on the first of January. We've got to wait till the 31st of October till Flux in the same year.
I think it was in 2021, wasn't it? In the Halloween apocalypse.
Yeah, it's like, well, I'm lucky to get it. I won't wait.
Because his story was basically we had, you know, it'd been a while since the time
this children had been in March 2020, I think. So we've sort of within 80 months, we only had this
one story. So we were in lockdown when revolution came out, yeah? Yes. Yeah. Well, I think
depending on where you were, remember that Christmas where London and the South East, I think,
went to tier four or whatever it was. And it was Christmas was cancelled at the last minute.
And yeah, I'm going to let you into a little secret now. Now we've done the commentary.
It's, I've been begging my overall for about two years to do the commentary on revolution
on a Daleks, because I didn't think any fucker would ever want to do it. And I'm like, come on,
it's greatest Daleks. It's great. I'm really pleased. He said no, frankly, it was a great
introduction to having you on hand stuff. Oh, it's an exciting episode to come in now.
I have scared you off. Are you willing to come back and do another one of these things?
I think, I think I'm hungry for more, Joe. Oh, excuse me. Music to my ears. Well, I mean,
could I possibly entice you to the planet, Sparadon? Yes, the greatest. I think
all partway stories are the best Daleks stories ever made for me. Oh, you are man after my own heart.
What do I have to Daleks as well? Death to the Daleks? Yeah, those are the planet.
Three of my favourites, probably. Did you ever look at an Ikea floor in the same way again?
No, over attachment. I think planet is my favourite of the three though.
So it's so, it's like technical and gorgeous. Well, okay. Well, then until we
slip and slide through the... Oh, yeah, I've got about that. It is quite squirty, isn't it?
Oh, there's plants. Yeah. There's a weird plant in the weird eye things.
Yeah, the weird eye things and the ice tunnels full of edible people, the string gunk.
There's all over Joe Grant's arm. I'm sure you're ready for this. I think I'll have a couple of
drinks before that one. Let's do. I mean, I'll do what I always do with a six-part, we'll do three
and three, six and one nightmare. One, that's just too much of me. And two, it's exhausting.
You're looking about Dr. Oof at many, many hours, but before we go, can I just very quickly
ask you to mention your story one last time and if you're willing, let people know where you are
in line. Okay, so I love Jody. And if you love Jody like I love Jody, you can check out the Wednesday
that wasn't on Big Finish. It's a free short trip. You can download it yourself.
Right, Tyo, by the way. Great Tyo. And luck, it was a Wednesday. It's just the alliteration.
It could have been any day, but I feel Wednesday sort of makes sense.
So the Wednesday that wasn't, you can download that for free and then you can read the script
as well, if you like, it's also on there. And amazingly, you can download the audio score as well,
which is really, absolutely great score as well. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, the sound design is
beautiful on it. They're just at a level now. Aren't they Big Finish where the releases are so
polished. It's so good. I'm still clinging on slightly on Twitter, on X, but planning to move
probably at some point, but I am at snark in space on there. You can find me on there.
Yeah, do you know, I was thinking earlier and I was like, you know, oh, I can't wait to talk
to that fellow snark tonight. What the fuck is his name? Oh, I know of him as it's the snark in
space. There's nothing snarky about you. I told you the most lovely spurs. Well,
I had to keep myself secret in there because I'm under the radar. Oh, of course. Okay.
Well, I'm so sorry, but I'll be posting all of this on your social. No, I won't.
No, it has been a genuine, genuine pleasure. And just to say, if you enjoy the
wincer that wasn't half as much as I did, you'll have a fucking amazing time of it. It's a wonderful
story. Thank you very much for your time tonight. Oh, no, thank you. It's lovely, Joe. And now we need
to get back to the Squirty Planet. Oh, no, thank you. It's lovely, Joe. And now we need to get back to
the Squirty Planet. Oh, no, thank you. It's lovely, Joe. And now we need to get back to the Squirty Planet.
