3:24here's today's adventure with the tales of the Texas Rangers. And now, from the piles of the Texas Rangers, the case called Unleashed Fury. It is 3.30 a.m. during the night of April 25th, 1938. Near the town of Karnesville, Texas, Routed Lang and his wife were asleep in the upstairs bedroom of their farmhouse. Outside the house, a car pulls to a stop. And a moment later, Lang is awakened by someone knocking on the front door. He gets up and goes downstairs. All right. Who is that? Ranger Morgan. That's a ranger. Sorry to wake you up, sir. Oh, it's all right. What is it? You hear anyone prowling around your house tonight? I know. Why?

4:24Well, I don't want to scare you, but we're looking for one of the inmates from the state hospital. You mean somebody escaped from your asylum? Yes, you're about one this morning. We're checking all the houses in the area. Your door's locked? Yeah, always keeping locked at night. Yeah, this man's e-dangerous. Yes, sir. He's a killer. I see. Now, I have to move now. I'll just make sure you keep your doors and windows locked. Let us know if you see or hear anything. I will. Thanks for warning us. Who is it, but I don't? Nobody, honey. You go back to bed. Well, good night, sir. Tonight, Ranger. Who is that? Texas Ranger. What do you want? Nothing, honey. That ain't so. What's a Ranger doing around here this time and night? How, Ginny. What is it, Ralph? What's happened? Nothing, I tell you. Just some fellow got out of the hospital. Rangers are looking for him. Why'd they come here? They're checking all the houses around here. Just one to know if we'd see him. Well, I'm scared. Now, honey, there's nothing to worry about. Let's go back to bed. I think you ought to look around the house first. Fur we keep our doors and windows locked.

5:25He can't. Please, Ralph. All right, honey. All right, but they ain't a way he could have got in. Besides, if he did, we'd have heard him, but now. I was saying, I feel better if you had a look. Okay. Ralph, I'm scared. No, honey, you don't have to be scared. Here, I'll switch on the living room light. You see another soul. You better look in the kitchen. Well, Ginny, the kitchen door's locked. I'm not sure I locked. No. I can't remember. All right. I'll go out there. Be careful, Ralph. I will. Nobody out here. See if the door's locked. Uh-huh. Well, you were right. It was, unlock. I'll lock it up.

6:26Now, I've looked what do you say we go back upstairs and get some sleep. I'm still scared, Ralph. That's me. Ginny, I gotta get hold of yourself. Now there's nothing to be scared of. I'll just get this light on you. Listen. How do you know that? I'm scared. Sounded like a bedroom door. Can we make sure? Don't leave me. No, honey, come on, come on. Yeah, it's closed. It's upstairs. He must have been hiding in the hall. We didn't know. I better find him. No, no, no. No, no, no. You hear you? Let's go. All right, come on. I take this. I'll bring him along. The light in our bedroom. It just went out. Gin, come on, we get the car. What's the battery? The car keys. There upstairs.

7:27What are we gonna do? Ralph, the window. He's watching us. Come on, we gotta get out of here. When the couple reached the nearest house half a mile away, they called the police. Radio word was flashed to Texas Rangers, Jason Pearson and Clay Morgan, who were covering that area in separate cars. Ranger Pearson had just arrived at the Lang farmhouse when Ranger Morgan pulled up. Hey, over here, Clay. I checked this place just 30 minutes ago. House is dark and could still be in there. Let's go find out. Sure hope we're getting fast. I think of a guy like this Charlie Brock who went around the countryside. Yeah. Try the door. Yeah. It's unlocked. Here's the light. I'll get it. It doesn't look like he's down here anyhow. Let's get upstairs.

8:28Stay on your toes. Get the corner. He probably put up a fight. Bedroom door's closed. You hear anything Jason? No, let's go in. Easy. Not here. Back in the lines could have been imagining things. I don't think so. I got this. Hospital closed. Charlie was here all right. I'll be helped himself to want Mr. Lang suits. We get a description of anything that's missing. What do you think we ought to do now? He can't be too far away. Let's go outside and see if we can pick up any kind of trail. Might not do any harm to have a look at that barn back at the house. We'll check there first. And if we don't find any tracks we'll put up to start covering the area. Tough part is we don't have any way of figuring what to do next. Wish we could see that barn better. Moon just gone down behind the hill. Let's see your right since we get a little closer. Must be pretty slippery to break out of that hospital.

9:29Yeah, vicious too. You remember his case? All I know is he murdered his parents about 10 years ago. Pants and two sisters clubbed him to death. Wanna let make some man go off hold it a second? What is it? I heard something. Yeah, there it is again. Sounds like gravel rolling down his hill. Come on. Jason, there he is. Stand on that ridge. You can see a silhouette. Hold it, Charlie. Wait, there's no use playing. Just one over the rise. Well, about that. There's a whole time watching us. He's show-gotten. More than that. Watch yourself when we get the time. Yeah. And I'll be where he go. There's not a sign of him. He's got to be around somewhere. Let's keep moving. Charlie Brock's trail led through a stretcher brush and ended on the bank of a shallow creek. Play went back for our horses and we continued to scour the area. By noon we were convinced Charlie'd gotten away.

10:31We decided that the psychiatrist at the state hospital might be able to give us some information that would help in our search. We went there. Dr. Gallus showed us the window the isolation room through which Charlie escaped. He had saw the barge and the barge. He had seen the barge and the barge and the barge. He had seen the barge and the barge and the barge and the barge. He was with a piece of string coated with wax and scouring powder. Well, it's unbelievable, Ranger. Three heavy bars and all of that piece of string to work with. The patience of the man. How long was he an isolation doctor? About three months. Can't imagine why one of the attendants didn't notice what he was doing. It seems like he was pretty clever about that too. A bit of chewing gum on the ends of the bar. It's probably used to cover up his progress. The way those bars had been out, Jesus. Took a strong man to do that even after they were sore through. There's Charlie strong. He's incredibly strong. Oh, that's my call. You want to wait here, Ranger? I shouldn't belong. We'll come along with you. We're anxious to get going. As soon as we ask you a few more questions. There's a room.

11:32I was saying I didn't realize how strong Charlie was until we had to put him in isolation. What happened? Well, we're just admitted a young man to the hospital. School teacher. One day he was talking to Charlie. Something he said must have made Charlie angry. Did Charlie attack him? Yes, he did. It took six attendants to get Charlie under control. He almost killed the school teacher. Was that the first time you had trouble with him? Yes, he's always been very quiet. Too quiet. We weren't able to do much with him in the way of therapy. What about his killing his parents and sisters? Were you ever able to figure out the reason for it? Yeah, it wasn't easy to get Charlie to talk. But we gathered. They'd always made fun of him. He'd been taken out of school when he was 16 and still in the fourth grade. And his family didn't let him forget him. He was older than 16 when he killed him, wasn't he? Yes, well, just a second, Ringer's. I have the key right here. Wasn't Charlie in his middle 20s when he came here? Uh, 24. Seems you ran away from home after he was taken out of school. He came back to see the bluff. That's his hometown eight years ago.

12:33Well, after he'd been home only two months, he... Well, you know the rest. Uh-huh. After you, Ringer. Excuse me while I see what the call desk wants. Dr. Gallus, do you want me? Oh, just a minute. Uh, desk has a message for either one of you. Now, I'll take it, Jace. Ranger Morgan. Yeah, hold on. I certainly hope you catch up with Charlie soon, Ringer. Oh, he's dangerous. He's extremely dangerous. And completely unpredictable. There's no telling the one you'll try to kill again. But you think he will try to kill? I wish I could say no. Tell him, Dr. Hey, we better get going, Jace. Who wasn't? Tom Marshall's office over at Rockville. Somebody spotted Charlie Brock at a school yard there. We took my car and made the 18 miles from the hospital to Rockville in 20 minutes. It was 3.30 when we arrived. The school yard was deserted. We began looking for the town Marshall. We found his car park two blocks from the school.

13:34As we pulled up, we saw the Marshall just leaving a house. We got out of our car and walked toward him. He's in the house. Are the raiders? Boy, I sure am glad to see the pair of you. Got any leads on him, Marshall? And that's yet only one scene it was with Knai and over at the school. She's one of the teachers there. How long ago was this? I mean, let's see. It must have been two hours ago. And you know, I got right out to the school. He'd already disappeared. I've been looking everywhere, doing a house to house now. Your shirt was Charlie Brock the teacher saw. Couldn't have been nobody else. Oh, normal Knai and she don't make mistakes. She said she recognizes picture from the paper. Even if she hadn't, couldn't have been no doubt about it from the way he was acting. How do you mean? Well, uh, Miss Knai and she had the kids out in the school yard. And uh, she seen this fella stand in outside the fence. Well, she didn't pay much attention to him. And then she scored one of the kids a little. And this fella starts screaming at him and carrying on crazy life.

14:36Did he come into the school, young? Miss Knai and she didn't wait to see. Why, she just took the kids inside and called me. I come right out. Don't sting. I have a scene how I can find him. Where's Miss Knai now? I know she's over her house. You see, she don't have no car, so I wrote a home in mind. Huh, she was right upset. I guess she was. Yep. She got herself in such a state I had to get one of the neighbors a state with her. I said, you ranges. I sure hope you catch this full of fast. I don't want no partner, no maniac in my town, no sir. You say you covered all the area around the school? Oh, we covered every street and every house right up to here. There ain't no place you could hide for me. Not the way I know this town, but I ain't been able to find him. Well, we'll give you a hand. It's pretty tough for you to be working alone anyhow. Well, just between you and me ranges, I'd be happier if it's you, Kornum, and not me. I don't mind handling traffic offenders, but this maniac, uh-huh. He's something different now. Our radio station's standing by to flash us in case anything happens. How are they now? They asked your town operator to call him.

15:36I'm going to get me a radio in my car one of these days. Might he have anything to have, especially when he got something like this to your block full of loose in town? Yeah, well we'll see you later, Marshall. I hope you get him ranges. I sure hope you get it. Figure he might still be around, Jason. I don't believe in tried to guess. How close we were to last night. He was watching us the whole time we were around the Lang farmhouse and we didn't know it. Yeah, now was the second time and an hour I could have had him if I'd known. Wow, I'm reckon the best thing to do is cover the outskirts of town. Another accident due to carelessness is chalked up to become a figure on next year's traffic accident statistical chart. Let's all keep this year's traffic accident rate as low as possible. 19:41and our authentic story Unleashed Fury. We drove to the address indicated in the radio call. It was a small bungalow, set a little apart from the rest of the houses on the street. When we arrived, the number of neighbors were already in the house and stood in little groups in the living room in kitchen. Two or three people were comforting Laura Stanwick, a girl in early 20s. She was sitting at the kitchen table. Excuse us. That is true here, please folks. If you don't mind, we'd like to ask Miss Stanwick a few questions. We won't be long. Miss Stanwick. We're sorry to bother you, but there are a few things we have to know. It was so awful. awful. Did you get a good look at the man? Yes. His eyes and the way his mouth. Had you ever seen him before? Only his picture in the paper. He was the man who... Oh, I'm sorry. The man who escaped from the hospital last night. Yes.

20:41Can you tell us how it happened? I was standing here at the table, feeling the taste. I heard the kitchen door open and I looked around. Oh, it was so awful. I'm sure it was. He jumped at me. He made the most horrible sound. I can add him. I've felt him but his hand around my throat. Yes, ma'am. I think I jabbed his shoulder with a knife. I'm not sure. After that, I must have fainted. Is this the knife you were using to peel potatoes? Yes. Little speck of blood on the tip, Jace. She might have nicked him. Uh-huh. Anyhow, it was enough to scare him away. Miss Tanwick, you say you only saw this man's picture in the papers. You never actually saw him until he came into your kitchen. No. Were you home the whole day? Oh, no. I just got in home from school a few minutes before I came here. School? I'm a teacher at the grandma school. Jace. Uh-huh. How'd you get home from school, Miss Tanwick? Walk? A drove. That's your coup out in front, the blue one? Yes.

21:41Or was it parked? Right outside the school building. Well, I always leave it. When you got into the car, do you remember if you looked in the back seat? Well, no. I don't think I did. Miss Go, she's the fourth grade teacher. She was standing with the car when I got in. I remember we talked a few minutes about report cards. No, I'm sure I didn't look in the back. Even if you had it, it would have been tough to see anybody if he was lying on the floor. You mean he was in my car the whole time I was driving home? That sounds that way, ma'am. Oh. That's probably why the Marshall didn't spot Charlie. Pick yourself a good place to hide. Ranger, you don't think that man will come back. I don't know. You better have one of your neighbors stay with you until he's picked up. Oh, for man. I know who would sleep till you get it. Please, Ranger, you got to get it. We questioned the neighbors. Nobody had seen Charlie Brock enter or leave the house, working in cooperation with the Marshall and the Posse of Towns people we covered every inch of the town.

22:45At 10 that evening, Clay and I went into a restaurant to get some meat before continuing the search. So I just, oh, not too much. I don't know. Beats me how these guys just speared. Me too. Unless he's hiding in some place we haven't thought of looking. Can't think of where that would be. We've hit just about every alley, cellar, and backyard in town. How you want to hand me a salt and pepper? Yeah, thanks. Like I said last night, you can always try to out guess an ordinary criminal. Figure out some kind of ammo on him. Oh, this guy, you never know what he's going to do next. I've been thinking about that. Seems to me we do have something that looks like an ammo. He means schools? Remember, while he was in the hospital, he jumped a school teacher. And today, he was after two others. Yeah. Yeah, forms of pattern, all right, but why? That's something Dr. Gales would have to say for sure, but it sounds like Charlie feels everything that's gone wrong for him started with school and teachers. Now suppose it's true. Suppose he's going to hit another school, where does that leave us? We can't cover every school in Texas. You know, but there's one we can cover. One that could be a pretty likely choice for Charlie.

23:46Which one's that? Charlie's hometown, Cedar Bluff. It's only about 20 miles from here. Yeah. Why can't we be sure we can't? But if you draw a straight line between the hospital and Cedar Bluff, what's it cut through? Well, let's see it. Hey, it does come right through here. You think a Charlie might have just been sidetracked for a few hours this afternoon, and maybe the place he really meant to go when he broke out was his hometown? There's more than half a chance he may be heading for the school where he used to go. He could figure that this school is the root of all his trouble. You might have something to add, Jase. Can you finish eating? Yeah, I've had enough. Let's get over to Cedar Bluff. We arrived in Cedar Bluff a little before midnight and awakened the principal of the grammar school. A man named Dunn. He'd been one of Charlie Brock's teachers and twice the victim of Brock's violence. Mr. Dunn admitted that he'd been more than uneasy since reading of Charlie's escape. He also felt the strong possibility of Charlie showing up at the school.

24:48Following morning, Clay and I arrived at the school before it opened. By 8.30, the children began arriving. Fifteen minutes later, Mr. Dunn walked toward where we stood just outside the school building. Good morning. Good morning, Wayne-Jase. Morning, Mr. Dunn. Well, you know, I have got to confess it. After you left me last night, I had to slip the ring. I'm sorry if the bother to you, we thought it was necessary. And of course it was. Oh, good morning, Miss Arthur. Morning. I kept thinking about Charlie Brock and the trouble he gave us when he went to school here. Expect he was, real problem, huh? Yes, he wasn't. It's so strange. In most ways, he was a completely backward boy. But sometimes, when it came to covering up something he'd done, he was out of his brilliance. And we've seen some examples of his brilliance, like the way he broke out of the hospital. Well, once you've been close to him, you never forget him. He was like, oh, he was like some vicious animal. I can still remember the way he looked. And that was over 15 years ago. Uh-huh. And that certainly hope he doesn't show up here with all these children around. We'd be watching for him, Mr. Dunn, just in case.

25:50Don't you want to come into my office? Where you can make yourselves comfortable? Thanks, but we better stay in our car. There might be some radio calls. Aside, we have a better view of the school from there. Yes, your car. I'm afraid I don't see it. Oh, behind those trees, Mr. Dunn. We got out of the way, especially for Charlie's benefit. Oh, yes, yes. Call us if you want us. Well, thank you, but I hope I don't have to. And see you later, Mr. Dunn. Come on, play. Yeah. That Mr. Dunn reminds me of a teacher I had when I was going to school and witch it all falls. Mm-hmm. Hey, you're that, Jason. Remember how they were days when you'd hear that bell? You're still two blocks away from school? Yeah. You started worrying because you were late, and there was nothing you could do by. Yeah, except start thinking of a good excuse. I wonder what goes on in Charlie's box mind when he hears a school bell ring. Yeah, probably thinks the end of the world could be you're not far along. Well, we better get in and settle down. We're level to be here all day.

26:5410, 30 must be the recess bell. Uh-huh. It's not a funny about Charlie. You think he was going to show it to Ben here, but now? I don't know, Clay. Maybe I was wrong. Well, you had it figured. Sounded like pretty good reasoning. Could be he sleeping somewhere. Maybe he'll turn up this afternoon. Maybe. I'm beginning to wonder. Yeah. He doesn't show by this afternoon. You want to move on? Well, it might be the best idea. We'll get the console to keep watching. Please. There's Mr. Donald. The steps he's waving to us. Uh-huh. Where's he going? Looks pretty excited about something. Come on, let's go. Planger. Hurry! Hurry! He's in there. He's inside the building. Where? He tried to kill Miss Hoffman, who was the most awful the way he looked. Where'd he go? To the upstairs, I think. Come on, Clay. Right. Must be up this way. It didn't come in while we were here. Must have broken in the school last night and slept here. Yeah, try that first classroom.

27:55I'll get the other one. Right. Nobody in here. This one's empty, too. Might as well work our way down the hall. We got it. Wait a minute. Shh. The room over there. Thought I just saw the door. He's shut. He is in there. Try not to make any sudden moves. Just keep talking while we work toward him. Yeah. James, in the corner. Uh-huh. All right, Charlie. Come on now, boy. Easy now, Charlie. Nobody's going to hurt you. You just come along with us. He's going for that flowerfly. No, Charlie. Put it down. Put it down, Charlie. What did you? Come on, Charlie. You're going with us now. Easy, Charlie. What? Grab him!

28:55You got you. Got you. Come on, Charlie. I can't hold him for that. Come on, Charlie. Get the shit out of here. Now, let's go, Charlie. Everything's going to be all right now. That's a boy now. Easy, doesn't. Down this way, Charlie. Everything all right, James? Mr. Dunn, you better get back in one of the classes. Here we get, Charlie. You're going to be in trouble, James. Charlie. All right, Charlie. All right, let's go. Let's go. Let's go. You'll be all right, Charlie. I don't belong in there. They do. They do. They do. They do. Come on, boy.

Despite continued efforts at therapy by the psychiatrist, Brock's condition grew steadily worse. On November 10, 1940, Charlie Brock died quietly in his sleep.
