It requires a terrifying ability to box up a traumatic violent event, place it on a mental shelf in the darkest corner of your mind, and lock the door so securely that it doesn't
affect your day-to-day effect or your ability to socialize. It's almost psychopathic in its emotional detachment. You are curating this perfect aspirational life for Instagram, posting vacation photos with friends while carrying this monumental dark secret. Exactly. It's like she convinced herself it never happened, or that it was done by a different person entirely. It absolutely shatters our culturally ingrained preconceived notions of what a killer looks like. We think of a boogie man. Right. We are conditioned by movies and literature to expect a monster hiding in the shadows. We think of the outcast, the person who looks dangerous and lives on the fringes of society. But often, in this case, illustrates it perfectly, the suspect is embedded right in the middle of normal everyday society. They are hiding in plain sight. They are selling you your starter home. They are standing next to you in line at a Parisian cafe waiting for a croissant. They are living vibrant social lives attending neighborhood block parties. It's showing.
