Dear listener, history is filled with moments when nature behaves in ways that seem to defy explanation.
Sometimes animals migrate in strange patterns. Sometimes flocks of birds fall mysteriously from the sky.
And occasionally something happens that is so bizarre, it almost sounds like a prank played by the universe itself.
One of those moments occurred in the 19th century when towns people began reporting something deeply unsettling.
Frogs were exploding. The stories began appearing in scattered reports across Europe during the mid 1800s.
In several towns, residents claimed that frogs gathered in unusual numbers near ponds and marshes behaving erratically before suddenly swelling and bursting open with a loud pop.
Witnesses described the animals inflating dramatically, sometimes expanding to several times their normal size before rupturing.
For people living in the 19th century, the site was deeply disturbing.
At the time, scientific explanations for many natural processes were still developing and rural communities often interpreted strange animal behavior through the lens of superstition or folklore.
Some residents feared the phenomenon was a sign of poisoned water or diseased air. Others believed it might be an omen of some larger disaster approaching their region.
Newspapers began carrying the strange reports. One account described dozens of frogs near a village pond, suddenly expanding and bursting one after another, while horrified residents watched from the shoreline.
Another story claimed farmers had discovered the remains of swollen amphibians scattered across fields after a rainy night.
In some versions of the tale, the frogs were said to leap wildly, moments before the explosion occurred, as though something inside them was building unbearable pressure.
As the story circulated, they captured public curiosity. Scientists and naturalists were soon asked to explain what could possibly cause such a bizarre phenomenon.
The explanation, when it finally arrived, turned out to be strange in its own way. In many of these cases, researchers eventually concluded that the frogs had fallen victim to predators, specifically birds such as herons, crows, or gulps.
These birds sometimes eat frogs by removing the internal organs and leaving the rest of the body behind.
The empty skin of the frog remains largely intact. When gases build up inside the hollow body due to decomposition, the skin can swell dramatically.
If the pressure becomes too great, the skin can rupture suddenly, creating the appearance that the frog had inflated and exploded on its own.
To 19th century witnesses unfamiliar with the process, the result looked like something supernatural.
Imagine standing beside a quiet pond and seeing a frog slowly expand like a balloon before bursting open without any visible cause.
Without modern biological knowledge, it would be almost impossible not to interpret the scene as something deeply mysterious.
Yet even after scientists proposed their explanation, the exploding frog stories never fully disappeared.
The strange reports resurfaced occasionally over the years, including modern cases where similar events puzzled observers before the predator explanation was rediscovered.
In fact, in 2005, a small town in Germany experienced a wave of frog explosions that briefly captured international media attention.
Investigators eventually determined that crows were responsible, removing the frogs' livers and leaving the rest of the bodies to swell and rupture.
Nature, it seems, has its own bizarre logic.
The exploding frogs of the 19th century serve as a reminder that sometimes the strangest historical mysteries are simply moments when human understanding lags behind the complexity of the natural world.
But for the people who first witnessed the phenomenon, standing beside ponds and fields as frogs suddenly burst apart before their eyes, the explanation came much later.
At the time, all they knew was that something deeply unnatural appeared to be happening in the marshes.
And for a brief moment in the strange pages of history, it seemed as though the frogs themselves had turned into tiny ticking time bombs.
Shaq, and now a brief word from tonight's sponsor.
Have you noticed unusual amphibian behavior in your neighborhood?
Are frogs gathering near your pond and looking suspiciously puffy?
Do you find yourself wondering whether local wildlife might be preparing for some kind of tiny biological detonation?
Then you need frog guard home protection.
Frog guard is the world's first completely unnecessary amphibian monitoring system.
Simply place the frog guard sensor near your pond, garden, or suspiciously damp ditch, and it will alert you the moment a frog begins behaving in an overly inflatable manner.
Our patented amphibian early warning technology scans for warning signs like unusual croaking, dramatic swelling, and frogs that appear to be contemplating their life choices.
If a potential frog situation is detected, frog guard immediately sends an alert to your phone, along with our helpful safety message.
Step away from the amphibian.
Each frog guard kid also includes a complimentary official frog incident report notebook, allowing you to document suspicious frog activity for local historians and confused biologists.
Frog guard, because nothing ruins a peaceful evening by the pond, like the sudden realization that nature has escalated.
Frog guard, keeping you one hop ahead of amphibian chaos.
Dear listener, history often records the moments when people encounter something they simply cannot explain.
Sometimes those mysteries remain unsolved.
Other times, the answer arrives decades later.
Once science has caught up to the strange behavior of the world around us.
The exploding frogs of the 19th century remind us that curiosity, confusion, and imagination have always played a role in how humans interpret the unknown.
Because when nature behaves strangely, the first explanations we reach for are not always the correct ones, but they are almost always the most fascinating.
Until next time, remember, the world has always been a strange place.
Sometimes the evidence is written in ancient manuscripts, and sometimes it's scattered across a pond after something goes very, very wrong with a frog.

My name's Mackenzie, and I started to go fund me for the adoptive mother of a nonverbal autistic child.
The mother had lost her job because she wasn't able to find adequate care for this autistic child.
So she really needed some help with living expenses, paying some back bills.
So I launched a GoFundMe to help support them during this crisis, and we raised about $10,000 within just a couple of months.
I think that the surprising thing was by telling a clear story and just like really being very clear about what we needed.
We have some really generous donations from people who are really moved by the situation that this family was struggling with.
GoFundMe is the world's number one fundraising platform, trusted by over 200 million people.
