Patrick Walters shares a piece of advice from his father that stuck with him. As a kid, he wanted to skip school to watch cricket — and his father reminded him that the sport alone wasn't going to pay the bills; he needed his education too. Looking back, he says his father was right: he didn't want to take the steps in between, he just wanted the thing he loved.

The lesson he carries now: in addition to your passion, you have to build a good foundation. Educate yourself as much as possible — and it doesn't have to be in an academic setting. There are so many tools and alternative ways to learn these days that if traditional school isn't your jam, you can find what is. Just don't skip the foundation.
