Twenty. The appeal. December the 7th, 1954.
0:15
Good morning, friends.
0:18
Our Bible reading today is Isaiah 55.
0:21
The Prophet's great appeal to men to leave their frustration and dissatisfaction
0:26
and find rest and refreshment in God's everlasting grace and mercy.
0:32
Oh, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters,
0:36
and he that hath no money, come ye by and eat,
0:39
ye come by wine and milk without money and without price.
0:43
Wherefore do you spend money for that which is not bread,
0:47
and your labor for that which satisfyeth not?
0:50
Harkened diligently unto me, and each ye that which is good,
0:54
and let your soul delight itself in fatness,
0:57
incline your ear and come unto me,
1:00
hear and your soul shall live,
1:02
and I will make an everlasting covenant with you,
1:05
even the sure mercies of David.
1:08
Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people,
1:11
a leader and commander to the people.
1:13
Behold, I shall call a nation that thou knowest not,
1:17
and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee
1:20
because of the Lord thy God and for the Holy One of Israel,
1:23
for he hath glorified thee.
1:26
Seek ye the Lord while he may be found,
1:28
call ye upon him while he is near,
1:31
let the wicked for seek his way,
1:33
and the unrighteous man is thoughts,
1:35
and let him return unto the Lord,
1:37
and he will have mercy upon him,
1:39
and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.
1:43
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
1:46
neither are your ways my way, set the Lord,
1:49
for as the heavens are higher than the earth,
1:51
so are my ways higher than your ways,
1:54
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
1:57
For as the re-encometh down and the snow from heaven,
2:00
and returneth not there but watereth the earth,
2:03
and makeeth it bring forth and bud,
2:05
that it may give sea to the sewer and bread to the eater,
2:09
so shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth,
2:13
it shall not return unto me void,
2:15
but it shall accomplish that which I please,
2:19
and it shall prosper in the thing where too I sent it,
2:23
for ye shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace,
2:27
the mountains and the hills shall break forth
2:29
before you into singing,
2:31
and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands,
2:34
instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree,
2:37
and instead of the briar shall come up the mortal tree,
2:40
and it shall be to the Lord for anew,
2:43
for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off,
2:52
What the prophet Isaiah offered to the peoples
2:55
in this great invitation is clearly stated in a fourth verse.
2:59
It is this offering servant,
3:01
the Messiah or Christ of God,
3:03
who through his death will bring abundant pardon to many.
3:07
These are the sure mercies of David,
3:11
that is the blessing so surely promised to David,
3:14
whose fullness is seen only in Jesus Christ.
3:19
Man's forgiveness is always uncertain and imperfect.
3:23
Man can comfort us in our affliction and sorrow,
3:26
or speak to our souls guilt and frustration,
3:28
and it courage us movingly at times,
3:31
but what man gives is superficial,
3:34
and it does not change our lives.
3:36
It only enables us briefly to forget our predicaments,
3:39
only to have it later returned with renewed force,
3:44
our only true ground for hope is in God and his Christ,
3:48
for he alone will abundantly pardon and completely cleanse.
3:52
He will wipe out our guilt and frustration
3:55
as surely as a reinforce from heaven.
3:59
To have this piece of God,
4:01
we are summoned to forsake our way and our thoughts.
4:04
This is, of course, exactly what we hid to do,
4:08
once our way, plus God,
4:10
and he refuses to permit this situation.
4:13
Man is inclined to protest,
4:16
why should I give up my way and my thinking?
4:19
Why can't I be permitted to go my own way
4:22
and still have God's blessing and peace?
4:24
God's answer to this is clear cut.
4:27
For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
4:30
neither are your ways my way, Sethylord,
4:33
for as the heavens are higher than the earth,
4:36
so are my ways higher than your ways,
4:39
and my thoughts than your thoughts,
4:44
Our thinking is completely incompatible
4:47
with God's thinking and our ways with His ways.
4:51
Our life is conditioned, as Jesus said,
4:53
by such matters as these.
4:56
What shall we drink?
4:57
Wherewith shall we be clothed?
5:02
Our life moves in terms of ourselves.
5:05
God's thoughts and ways in terms of His eternal purpose.
5:10
We are called upon to forsake our life for His,
5:13
in order that we might really live.
5:17
As it is now, we are wasting our lives,
5:19
as I said, spending money for that,
5:21
which is not bread, verse 2.
5:24
That is, we work for that,
5:25
which does not satisfy,
5:27
and goes through life, hungering,
5:28
and thirsting for life,
5:30
but never really tasting it.
5:34
In the face of all this,
5:35
our only hope is in God, in Christ.
5:38
Living in Him, we shall go out with joy,
5:41
and be led forth with peace.
5:43
Nature itself will share in our happiness,
5:47
What was a thorn to us before
5:49
will become a lovely fir tree,
5:51
and a briar a mortal tree,
5:55
Because our life now is,
5:56
and a new world in Christ,
5:58
the fullness of which we shall inherit
6:03
can this really happen to us?
6:06
We have God's word that it cannot be otherwise,
6:11
so shall my word be that goeth forth
6:14
it shall not return unto be void,
6:17
but it shall accomplish that which I please,
6:20
and it shall prosper in the thing where too I sent it,
