And we are live.
It is the audible.
It's footballguys.com and it's the Denver Broncos trading for Jalen Waddle.
I just did a four-hour radio show and three and a half hours was on Jalen Waddle.
Yeah.
So let's get your opinion.
Yeah.
And I will then opine as well on these Denver Broncos making a blockbuster deal and one
that has people going, is this better than the Michael Pittman or DJ More deals in terms
of trades this offseason?
We've seen a few ride receivers move via trade.
The Broncos are the latest.
They get Jalen Waddle and he's now their number one receiver.
Yeah.
And they get him for this year's first, late in the first, this year's third and they
actually swap picks in the fourth so they move up a little bit.
The trade makes sense for both teams.
Let's start there.
The trade makes sense for both teams.
For Miami, you're turning a player that's going to be 30 by the time they're competitive
into draft capital for John Erick Sullivan to use.
Remember, John Erick Sullivan saw the Packers trade away, Devonte Adams, 2022, Aaron Rodgers
in 2023 and they were developing Jordan Love.
They drafted Christian Watson, Romeo Dobbs in 22.
They drafted Jaden Reed in 23 and they were fine.
They barely lost to the 49ers, the 49ers lost the Super Bowl at overtime in the playoffs.
So I think John Erick Sullivan is saying everyone's making fun and Malik Willis is not sad.
Malik Willis is happy to be with John Erick Sullivan because he knows this guy is pretty
smart.
That was the guy that helped, you know, was on the team that signed him after all.
And from the other side, like is somebody at number 30 really going to help the team?
You're in a Super Bowl window, Bo Nix's rookie contract window of being able to carry
two 30 million dollar cap hit receivers.
It's ticking the time.
So it makes sense.
And see, I also think maybe Sean Payton heard people saying, well, he hasn't done anything.
He hasn't done anything there.
I did something.
All right.
Yeah, there.
I did something.
And I got a stud number one receiver.
Now, Portland Sutton's probably still going to be a Bo Nix favorite.
But in terms of who does this benefit most, one, I think Jalen Waddle can be the number
one.
So he can have better numbers than he did in Miami.
Did you realize that the Miami Dolphins called the least amount of plays offensively last
year?
Also dealing with Tuha, who's not great, Bob.
And then the quarterback carousel when Tuha was hurt because again, he's not great, Bob.
And also dealing being the number two with Tyree Kill.
Now he gets to be the number one.
As far as Portland Sutton, Bloom, I think his numbers stay the same.
So he's going to be about a thousand yard guy, maybe 1100 yards.
Here's Jalen Waddle in this offense in the Sean Payton system with David's web calling
plays.
I think Waddle could be a 1200 plus yard guy in this offense.
And being that explosive playmaker that can work the middle of the field.
And if you look at any Bo Nix passing chart, you're going to see a big blank spot in the
middle of the field.
So I think Sutton's numbers stay the same.
I think Waddle can have his best numbers.
And I always ask the question in football and life, Bloom, have we seen the best of blank?
And I say, have we seen the best of Jalen Waddle?
What's your answer?
I think that that 2023 Dolphins offense that broke all the explosive play charts.
I mean, it's hard to imagine any more efficient offense pass wise than what Mike McDaniel created
there.
This is a Justin Herbert take.
So I don't know that Jalen Waddle is going to set career numbers.
I also agree with you that Portland Sutton's role shouldn't change.
See, you chronicled it last year, and maybe this is part of why this trade happened.
But when Bo Nix targeted Portland Sutton a lot, things got better for the passing game.
And when he targeted other guys, didn't, not so much.
You have a team here that spent a third round pick on Franklin, a third round pick on Bryant,
a second round pick on Marvin Mims.
And in some ways, the reason the trade's happening is none of those guys really hit.
So now you have Jalen Waddle, but what I would throw back to you ceases, you know, 200 targets
can change to those three guys last year, about 200 targets.
So do you, I mean, I still feel like Sutton's shares not going to change.
I think that unless these guys drop down to like 20 or 25, like one of them gets phased
out.
See, I don't know how you chop it up so that Waddle gets more than 100 or 110 targets considering
how many targets they set spent on the two, three and number four wide receivers.
Now, who is the guy that maybe gets pushed out of the rotation if Waddle is going to hit
his ceiling?
It's the guy that was pushed out last year about halfway through the regular season.
And that's Troy Franklin.
Now Marvin Mims, they don't use enough.
It's Marvin Mims, senior and it's me that asked for more Marvin Mims.
And I'm serious, and we don't get it for whatever reason.
But last year Troy Franklin, there was a time about halfway through the season where
he was the leading receiver for the Bronco.
He was the leading target getter.
And Cortland Sutton was number two to Troy Franklin.
And then they figured it out.
And they went away from Troy Franklin.
And Franklin was essentially shelved.
I think this move for Waddle makes him the number one.
Pat Bryant still gets to be Pat Bryant.
They really like Pat Bryant.
They like Troy Franklin.
But he was already phased out last year.
So Bloom, I'm just going to assume, which is very dangerous, sorry Joe.
But I think as an assumption, we should say, it's probably Troy Franklin that gets kind
of iced out with Jalen Waddle in the mile high city.
Yeah, I think that that was the shift we saw and they'll continue into that.
And then hopefully it creates a little more breathing room for JK Dobbins for the running
game, lightens boxes because of that threat.
And the other thing when you asked me about Waddle and is there room for him to go higher,
part of what I'm thinking about is it feels like he never puts it together for a whole season
or rarely does he.
There's nicks and bumps, right?
There's always some sort of nagging injury he's playing through.
I think maybe he was banged up last year in camp.
So that's going to be key.
And the other thing that's going to be interesting to see, I'm going to say it sees Joker.
Could Jalen Waddle be a Joker?
Yeah.
First Sean Payton's definition that Joker is an elite receiving tied end or running
back.
So I mean, but the idea of like targets near the line of scrimmage, creative play calling
to get the ball in his hands.
Well, and look what McDaniel did with Waddle anyway.
He would take handoffs, right, you take pitches sometimes.
So Sean Payton's not calling the plays, but he's crafting the offense.
And that should mean a lot of versatility for Jalen Waddle.
That should mean a lot of touches for Jalen Waddle, should mean a lot of targets for Jalen
Waddle.
And actually, Bloom, because of him, I pretty much saying being the centerpiece of the offense,
I would say there's not much of a learning curve.
Sean Payton's offense is very language heavy, language intense, but as I've mentioned
on this show and other shows, I talk a lot, Bloom.
We've only seen about 60% of the Sean Payton offense in Denver.
A lot of the New Orleans stuff they did with True Breeze has not existed yet.
I think Jalen Waddle can help solve some of those problems.
That personnel, I put that firmly on personality, not putting it on Bo-Nix.
I think the personnel upgrade with Jalen Waddle means Sean Payton could more run of his
offense.
And hopefully he sees maybe what we see is some of these misfires, speaking of the
jokers, right?
Evan Angerum.
I mean, maybe Angerum gets opened up with the middle of the field, begin Waddle's territory.
Maybe, or maybe they just say, we have 5 million guaranteed to this guy, but he's not
adding anything to the offense.
Maybe RJ Harvey, how often did we hear in the last couple of months, even the Broncos
themselves say the Broncos need running backs?
And RJ Harvey was not that, he wasn't even, he wasn't Alvin Camera.
He wasn't even Darren Sprouls, you know?
So maybe Jalen Waddle, again, looking for explosive plays, right?
I mean, that's it.
And Jalen Waddle can absolutely increase that.
Unfortunately, it does cast a bit of a spotlight on the failings, because these, if you say
the personnel is not there, well, who was pulling the strings and making the calls on who
the personnel was, you know?
Sean Payton.
Yeah.
Who makes the call on everything, including when it changes bond water, it's Sean Payton.
They do not like that video.
They don't like us talking about the video, but I'm like, I'm going to talk about the
video.
Sean Payton taking a bond grip.
I'm going to talk about that video.
Sorry.
Yeah.
That's not even like probably the top 25 most scandals things he's done in New Orleans.
So look up the videos of him at the club into club in the club.
Yes.
You got some of that action down there in beautiful New Orleans.
Let's talk about beautiful Minnesota, beautiful color Murray.
The internet's undefeated when it has the children going through the airport line of like
color Murray, greeted reporters in Minnesota, like, okay, funny, five foot three in an attitude,
funny.
JJ McCarthy situation, not funny, not at all.
And I like JJ.
I didn't have a first round grade on him, but I, how could you not feel bad for him?
Sam Donald went on the Super Bowl and you struggled to be even a below average quarterback.
JJ McCarthy was terrible.
So is this kind of Murray's job in Minnesota?
It is 100% it is 100% and Albert Breer sports illustrated said that part of the reason that
this happened is the Vikings don't necessarily just see Kyler Murray as a bandaid.
They see him as a potential long term solution, which gets to one of the topics of the moment
in the NFL.
We're looking at the recent era of the NFL sees get Baker Mayfield, Daniel Jones, Sam
Donald, entangled in all this, right?
Maybe Mac Jones in a few years, not this year.
These idea of these first round quarterbacks, Anthony Richardson, maybe first round quarterbacks
who fail, but with another organization with more time, with more maturity, they show some
of the things that made them a first round quarterback in the first place.
So is that Kyler Murray?
I'll give my quick take sees before I hand this back to you, but I don't know in terms
of a crafting an offense for his specific skill set.
Cliff Kingsbury was making eyes at Kyler Murray when Murray was in high school, okay?
The only reason Kyler Murray, you know, if the Cardinals don't hire Cliff Kingsbury sees,
where does Kyler Murray get drafted, does Kyler Murray even get drafted?
Does he play baseball?
You know, we're looking at alternate universes, right?
Because in January, the idea when he came out was he was going to play baseball and then
Cliff Kingbury gets hired and, whoa, and then it's, well, I hear Cliff Kingsbury is ready
to move on from Josh Rosen and Kyler Murray is going to go number one.
When Eric Galco told me that it was this outlandish thought and it came to be a reality, but
if Cliff Kingsbury can't show the NFL side of Kyler Murray, can Kevin O'Connell do it?
Does the reality about Kevin O'Connell's offense is it's going to rely on structure and timing,
right?
That's not Kyler Murray.
That's not, you know, it can't be because he's five foot three with an attitude.
Yeah.
Now, well, Kevin O'Connell lean into what people call it playground ball, right?
Like, kind of onto you.
Now Justin Jefferson might, I mean, we're talking about fantasy and how it all sorts out,
but as far as our renaissance, that's the idea of, well, now we see Kyler Murray different
light.
No, he's just going to be the same old Kyler Murray.
The question is, is Kevin O'Connell going to bend his offense?
Will the offense, you know, see, we can talk about how offensive Lyman feel about blocking
for somebody like Kyler Murray and guys, you know, again, we saw that this more remarkable
difference when Kobe Prasette was throwing the ball to Kobe Prasette for J.J. McCarthy
just real quick as a post script cease because we'll be having this conversation about him
in a few years, some other team, right?
He got hired for a job that he wasn't qualified for.
Is that his fault?
Really?
Again, Kevin O'Connell, this is one of those situations cease where there was fingers pointed,
kind of like a key on Coleman, you know, it wasn't, oh, GM that got fired, that's the
guy that was a response.
We're all looking for the guy who did this.
Kevin O'Connell did this.
Kevin O'Connell, how is Kyler Murray going to make that any better?
Yeah, well, and the thing is, how does Kyler Murray fit Kevin O'Connell?
Kevin O'Connell wants a big arm, you know, guy with everybody wants some mobility.
But he wants a tall pocket passer.
When I think of what Kevin O'Connell can work with, that's the type of player.
Again, a little bit of mobility, but Kyler Murray plenty of mobility, but not the structure
that you need in Kevin O'Connell's offense, I see this as an exercise in futility, which
means one thing, Bloom, they're going to be moving on from Kevin O'Connell.
Yeah.
And I hate that because I think he can be a really fine head coach, but it's about
fit in the NFL and JJ McCarthy never fit.
And then Kyler Murray doesn't fit.
So it's like they're trying to scramble or be desperate when really it's either the
coach or the quarterback and sometimes it's both.
This time with the GM already fired, Kevin O'Connell, you're next, if it doesn't work.
Yeah, it's going to be both.
And why is it going to be both, partially because if you're paying attention leading into
free agency, what you saw was, oh, the Vikings are going to have to cut a Draven
Hargrave, Vikings are going to have to cut Jonathan Allen, Vikings are going to have to
cut Aaron Jones.
Okay, they worked out a deal with Jones, we're set up paying 10 million, they paid him
five and a half million, you know, Vikings had Ryan Kelly, their center of retired.
Jonathan Greenard, he wants a new deal, word is, there's talk and hey, the offseason's
not over yet, that he could get dealt.
But maybe a second round pick would get it done.
This was a good player.
This was a successful signing for the now departed Qasey Adofu Mensa.
So this is a team in decline, right, I mean, this is a team that's Harrison Smith gone.
This is a team that's not getting better.
So Kyler Murray is trying to reclaim his career.
And what does Kevin O'Connell have going for him as far as a fit with Kyler Murray?
He's positive, he's a pot, but is he feeling positive now or is he grouchy because he
knows cease?
This is classic, like putting lipstick on a pit, right, because this was just the best
option they had.
Kyler Murray was the best, well, maybe this will work, throw it against the wall.
That's where they were.
It's an organization.
There was no choice.
There was no way Kevin O'Connell got his choice with J.J. McCarthy, but he wanted Drake
May.
And maybe that's the takeaway cease is when a team has a big first round press conference,
we got our number two guy.
No, no confetti.
Yay, us.
I'm not sure.
The Patriots are never moving off Drake May.
Right.
You could want him all you want.
Broncos liked him.
The Broncos really liked J.D. Daniels.
He was their number one quarterback.
They were never getting J.D. Daniels.
Right.
So it seems like a fantasy for them to think like, hey, you know what we need?
Drake May.
You know what we can't get?
Drake May.
Oh, dang it.
Let's get the guy that's not like Drake May at all.
It just doesn't make sense.
And they could have kept barbed-out for J.J.
I feel bad for Kevin O'Connell.
Why?
Why this is, I mean, obviously, they drafted McCarthy.
They didn't know that Darnold was going to be Darnold.
But that's, we talked about this.
But Darnold was Darnold.
Why don't you lock him down?
Well, and I mean, that's the other, like, if there's something for the other 31 teams
to learn from, is if you take a first round quarterback and he gets hurt or otherwise,
like you're actually doing the prudent thing and bringing him along slowly.
And the veteran that you did not expect to play well, plays well, don't just let that
guy go.
He might win the Super Bowl the next year.
He might get you fired.
Okay.
That's really what happened.
Sam Darnold is what put this organization on tilt.
And sometimes it doesn't have to be either or.
And that's one of those things, Cesar, where it comes down to, we don't want to hurt
the kids confidence.
We brought him in.
If you feel like a setback, you know, if, if you feel like the wrong message is going
to be sent to a young quarterback, they have to endure so much adversity and failure on
the way to success.
I don't care who you're talking about, Cice, Patrick Mahomes or Josh Allen or whoever.
They can't handle that adversity and have resilience, then they're not going to make
it anyway.
Yeah.
And the thing is you just brought up when Galko told you about Kingsbury moving on from
Rosen, that was after a year.
I think it would have been much smarter for Kevin O'Connell to convince whoever it is.
And ownership does matter in these situations with the version on quarterback.
He needed to convince them like, Hey, I know he was hurt, but I just don't think he's
the guy.
And if we could maybe sell him and kind of try to get something for JJ before we play
him and he's not the guy because he's not ready.
And like, I want to do a different move.
Was that not in the cards?
You know, hey, Donald's the man, lock Donald down, either sit JJ because then everyone
would be like, Hey, Donald's playing good football and JJ is just the future or whatever.
But it was locked, Donald up and then ship JJ or sit JJ.
The worst thing you could do is what they did, Bloom, they play JJ.
Yeah.
They got nothing.
That's the part.
That's the unforgivable thing.
And see if I think of we knew Donald's mindset, remember the video of the team, like lifting
him up in the locker room and focusing correctly, Oh, there's no way this guy's leaving Minnesota,
right?
There's probably a point early in the off season where Donald, if you talk to him,
he would say, and he seems like a really straightforward on his guy.
He'd probably be like, Well, of course, I want to stay in Minnesota.
Of course, I do.
You know, probably the thought wouldn't even cross his mind of going to another team.
And Minnesota, Minnesota, own goal, blew that one.
And again, jobs, jobs get lost when you make decisions that are that bad.
Well, either that or you could have had a two year deal on him because look at, you
mentioned Mac Jones, he's not leaving because the 49ers can hold him for a king's ransom.
Right.
So if you're going to sign these former first rounders and you have the cashier like
how Shanahan does, put him on a two year deal because in case he works out, you don't
have to lose him.
So either way, drop a comment down below.

So join us at football guys dot com.
Join us as we talk about Kansas City, making a move for Justin Fields.
Bloom.
I really like this move.
Yeah.
I think it's good for both sides.
Fields needs of clean slate.
Andy Reed is one of the clean slate big tent.
We don't care who you were.
What happened at the previous stops.
It's for hitting a reboot and he's going to get to run the first team offense.
I think Eric B.
Enemy.
See, so you can talk about E.B.
And Kenneth Walker.
We haven't.
Let me just say that again.
Here's a take for you, see, Eric B.
Enemy.
Kenneth Walker.
Eric B.
Enemy.
Kenneth Walker.
Now imagine the first few weeks if Patrick Mahomes isn't ready or even if Patrick Mahomes
is ready.
What a perfect install saying we're going to come out.
We're going to come out like a stampede with Kenneth Walker unleashed.
And we are going to run the ball.
And we are going to defenses are not going to be ready if they're looking at previous
years type of chiefs offense based on what they're going to do either to ease Patrick Mahomes
back in or have an offense that works for Justin Fields and then you start the confidence
again.
And I don't think Justin Fields is ever going to be a long term successful start in NFL.
He just doesn't have the processor in the pocket to do that.
But can he be a quarterback who is that change up off the bench that saves a team when the
starter goes down for three or four games?
And he even be a quarterback that has like a nick foals kind of postseason run on a team
say like last year Seattle team, you know, like a team that if you're in a super bowl
window, maybe Justin Fields becomes a backup that you really covet.
And I want to see some success.
And I think this spot and he's also the Kansas City wanted him, Kansas, he went out and
got him.
They actually are paying three million of the 10 million.
He was guaranteed.
You could say the jets are paying seven, but really the jets were on the hook for all
10 anyway.
And they gave a six round pick.
So I think that speaks well of fields and how this is going to work out.
Yeah.
And with fields, we don't yet know the return date for Pat my homes.
We assume it's sometime during training camp.
We assume that he'll be ready week one.
But if not, just in case we've got a guy with plenty of starting experience and someone
that can be a little bit of a wild card plus on the kind of Walker thing said she teed
me up bloom.
I have to crush it.
I have to swing for my heels.
Yes.
I will say this.
And I want to I want to say something else, but I'll I'll soft sell it a little bit because
we know EB and who he's coached along the way, including Adrian Peterson.
And I believe he was there for his two thousand yard season.
So I'm not saying Kenneth Walker is two thousand yards.
But what would the chief's offense look like with a 1500 yard rusher, which is well within
the range for Kenneth Walker, with Eric Biannamy calling the shots?
Yeah.
It's I'm looking forward to Biannamy getting another chance.
And I'm looking forward to again, this chapter of Justin Fields career.
And see, I'm also I'm going to grab the wheel and say I'm a kind of excited about restricted
free agent running backs that did not get tendered.
See, I can't even remember one running back in the whole 20 years you've been doing
this.
Hey, this guy didn't get tendered.
His team didn't even think enough of him to give him two or three million dollars.
But there's three guys this year that I think the teams that let these guys go are going
to look back and say, what were we thinking?
Yeah, what were we thinking?
So bring up those names.
Yeah, sure.
I'll talk about these running back.
Yeah.
And see, I think the biggest one is Chris Rodriguez.
And they gave him six million guaranteed, like a two year 11 million deal, watching
to needs a guy like Chris Roder.
You're doing an under center running game and you let your best runner between the tackles
go now granted if they put the 3.5 million tender on him and then Jacksonville has signed
him to this deal, then I don't think they would have matched it.
So I guess maybe they lose Rodriguez either way, but Liam Cohen, you can look back at the
things he said about Rodriguez when they were together at Kentucky.
And what he said was he said something to the effect of like, I will miss having Chris
Rodriguez and knowing I'm going to get four yards because a lot of times the yards he
was getting weren't the scheme.
It was him.
Oh boy.
I like.
And look, he saw Basial Tutin for a year for a short moment there.
Basial Tutin was getting phased out.
And I love Basial Tutin's Christian Michael kinetic energy, but you know, telling you with
the move, what they think of these players, this is just you have to contort your brain
to say, no, no, he likes Tutin better.
I mean, this was not a name that I think people thought was a big deal going into free
agency, but that he's back with Liam Cohen means you got to prove to me that it's not
a big deal.
Now Keaton Mitchell with the chargers, oh, my Ravens, what are you thinking, man?
What are you thinking here?
Because this is a big play running back that you got to see up close and personal after
his knee got shredded.
This is the guy who hit the top mile an hour so often, so much more frequently.
And you know that it's working.
I know you're going to revamp the offense, you know, with the new coaching staff, but
you you've seen.
So let's see, hmm, what offensive coordinator could take a guy with speed and turn him into
a big play threat on limited touches, Mike McDaniel, oh, my home run.
Now if you have a Mary and Hampton, guess what, it's a three back back field, sorry.
But Keaton Mitchell in a Mike McDaniel offense, please, yes, and more, and then a manual
Wilson.
Interestingly, the Packers keep Chris Brooks, 2.5 million a year, so less than the 3.5 million
for the tender.
Good pass blocker, good passing down back, Matt Waldman favorite.
They still have the physical tools, but hasn't produced like a manual Wilson has.
Right.
Manual Wilson stepped in for Josh Jacobs last year and looked like Josh Jacobs in terms
of his physicality in terms of his intensity.
They let him walk to Seattle.
Now Seattle, let's take this all the way back to the top of the show with James and Waddle
traded.
Some people are saying, Devane Chan could he be next Seattle.
That's interesting.
They were actually rumored per Tony Pauline to be in on maybe swapping Terequil and Devane
Chan last year.
So we already know there was some smoke about that connection.
This is a team that doesn't have a starting running back.
Stay tuned.
But for now, it is manual Wilson, Cees, because Zach Sharban is going to be out Georgia
to Lonnie's a third down back, one that they like, but if he's a third down back.
So all three of these guys, who their teams didn't even think they were worth as much as
a kicker, could be the most valuable, and I know you're spitting out your coffee when
I say that like keyed Mitchell, but I don't think folks understand how keyed Mitchell was
able to turn a limited opportunity into so many big plays.
And I'm not, I'm not, Cees, I'm not convinced that the chargers think I'm hearing Hampton's
all that because when he came back last year, come on, if it all got more snaps than
him.
So to be continued with more names than we expected out of this very deep free agent
running back group.
It is the audible.
It's football guys dot com.
It's our 21st season of doing this show and Bloom were a couple of weeks in now to
free agency.
How are you?
I love it.
I'm feeling great.
Cees, because now we have like a dog, the pork chop dug in, we have data.
We can look at moves these teams have made and understand they're telling us their psychology.
They're telling us how they feel right now, what they're thinking and for the teams to
have new coaches, especially, but it's, it's terrific because the reveal has already
happened in a way.
And then it's up to us and our imagination to see where it's going to take us.
And in the meantime, the drafts going to be right around the corner and the next thing
you know, it'll be another amazing football season, but just did we get to spend so much
time together, even in March, is a beautiful thing, you know, we're recording this on St.
Patrick's Day, whether it's beautiful here in New Orleans, I hope it is wherever you
are.
Look up Finn McCool.
There's an Irish hero for you on St.
Patty's Day, but you're here real heroes are the people listening and talking to Cees
because that's the only reason we get to do this.
Now we get to do this and we get to grow our YouTube channel so in order to do just
that, make sure to like, comment, share, subscribe, hit the notification bell so that you never
miss a vid.
And we appreciate you very, very much.
