Chapter 30 starts this way, the altar of incense. Make an altar of a quesha wood for burning incense. It is to be square, a qubit long, and a qubit wide. And two qubits high, it's horns of the one piece with it. Overlay the top of all the sides and the horns with pure gold and make a gold molding around it. Make two gold rings for the altar below the molding, two on each of the opposite sides to hold the poles to use to carry it. Make the poles of a quesha wood and overlay them with gold. Put the gold in front of the curtain that shields the arc of the covenant law

3:04before the Atonement cover that is over the tablets of the covenant law where I will meet you. Aaron must burn, fragrant incense on the altar every morning when he tends the lamps. He must burn incense again when he lights the lamps at twilight. So incense will burn regularly before the Lord for the generations to come. Do not offer on this altar any other incense or any burnt offering or grain offering and do not pour a drink offering on it. Once a year, Aaron shall make atonement on its horns. This annual atonement must be made with the blood of the atoning sin offering for the generations to come. It is most holy to the Lord. Okay, so we've got this special altar which is just going to be used for burning incense. It's a smaller thing. It is a cubit long and a cubit wide and two cubits high. So it's roughly 18 inches by 18 inches by three feet tall. And they're going to burn incense on here in the morning and in the evening.

4:07Again, as a regular part of the worship, that is going to go on until worship stops, basically until this form of worship stops with the destruction of the second temple. Atonement money, then the Lord said to Moses, When you take a census of the Israelites to count them, each one must pay the Lord a ransom for his life. At the time he has counted, then no plague will come on them when you number them. Each one who crosses over to those already counted is to give a half-shekel, according to the sanctuary shekel, which weighs 20 geras. This half-shekel is an offering to the Lord all who cross over, those 20 years old or more are to give an offering to the Lord. The rich are not to give more than a half-shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the Lord to atone for your lives. Receive the atonement money from the Israelites and use it for the service of the tent of meeting. It will be memorial for the Israelites before the Lord make atonement for your lives.

5:11So every time you count people, you're supposed to pay this census tax as it were. This is basically of if you're going to count how many people you have. And David does this and gets in trouble because he doesn't pay this and has to choose some options, including a plague. So it's he gets in big trouble. But basically the idea is that if you're going to celebrate how many people you have, you have to remember to celebrate who gave you all these people, which is God. That God has protected you and God has raised you up and therefore, anytime you do a census, you have to have this atonement money. You have to remember that you have sinned and you have to pay the atonement for that sin. Basin for washing, then the Lord said to Moses, make a bronze basin with its bronze stand for washing, place between the tent of meeting in the altar and put water in it. Aaron and his sons are to wash their hands and feet with water from it.

6:13Whenever they enter the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water so they will not die. Also, when they approach the altar to minister by presenting a food offering to the Lord, they shall wash their hands and feet so that they will not die. This is to be a lasting ordinance for Aaron and his descendants for the generations to come. So the idea is you have to be prepared before you enter in the place of God and part of that preparation is washing that you wouldn't come in unclean. And so this is very important. This is even more important than telling a surgeon to wash their hands to save their patient. This is to save your own life. You can imagine how much better we would all get at hygiene if we looked at it as if we were saving our life. This is something that the priests are going to take very seriously. Anointing oil. Then the Lord said to Moses, take the following fine spices. 500 shekels of liquid mer, half as much, that is 250 shekels of fragrant cinnamon,

7:14250 shekels of fragrant calumas, 500 shekels of cassia, all according to the sanctuary shekel, and a hen of olive oil. Make these into a sacred anointing oil, a fragrant blend, the work of a perfumer. It will be the sacred anointing oil. Then use it to anoint the tent of meeting the ark of the covenant law, the table of and all its articles, the lamp stand in its accessories, the altar of incense, the altar of burnt offerings in its utensils, and the basin with its stand. You shall consecrate them so that they will be most holy and whatever touches them will be holy. Anoint Aaron and his sons and consecrate them so they may serve me as priests. Say to the Israelites, this is to be my sacred anointing oil for generations to come. Do not pour it on anyone else's body and do not make any other oil using the same formula. It is sacred and you are to consider it sacred. Whoever makes perfume like it and puts it on anyone other than a priest must be cut off from their people.

8:19It is interesting there are people these days who are patented in a sense. Obviously every perfume manufacturers are trying to preserve their particular secret formula of fragrance so that when you smell that fragrance you think of that manufacturer. In this case, when you smell this particular fragrance and this is going to be quite fragrant. Mer and cinnamon and and calumas and cashews. It is going to be quite potent flavor. When you smell that you should think of God and you should think of anointing and we are only going to use this fragrance for this purpose. Incents, then the Lord said, Moses take fragrance, spices, gum, resin, Onika and Galbana and pure frankincense, all in equal amounts and make a fragrant blend of incense, the work of a perfumer. It is be salted and pure and sacred. Grind some of it to powder and place it in front of the ark of the covenant law

9:19in the tent of meeting where I will meet with you. It shall be most holy to you. Do not make any incense with this formula for yourselves, consider it holy to the Lord. Whoever makes incense like it to enjoy its fragrance must be cut off from their people. So again, we are going to have yet another different set of fragrances that are going to be used for incense and only incense in this tent of meeting and then later on in the temple. And then let's continue on to chapter 31 because I do want to get to chapter 32 next week where things go sideways. Bezal-L and Oholyab. Then the Lord said to Moses, see I have chosen Bezal-L, son of Uri, the son of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge, and with all kinds of skills to make artistic designs for the work in gold, silver, and bronze, to cut and set stones to work in wood and engage in all kinds of crafts. Moreover, I have appointed Oholyab, son of Ahissa Mak, of the tribe of Dan to help him.

10:25Also, I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you, the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law, and with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent. The table in its articles, the pure gold lamp stand, and all its accessories, the altar of incense, the altar burned offerings, and all its utensils, the basin with its stand, and all the woven garments, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments for his sons when they service priests, and the anointing oil and fragrant incense for the holy place. They are to make them just as I commanded you. So this is something we'd see as a theme in the Bible as God is never going to tell us, to build all this stuff, and not provide both the materials, and in this case, the skills necessary to do so. So all of the things that God is telling Moses to create, he has made sure that Moses and the people of Israel have the ability to do that. The Sabbath. Then the Lord said to Moses,

11:29say to the Israelites, you must observe my Sabbaths. This will be a sign between me and your generations to come so you may know that I am the Lord who makes you holy. Observe the Sabbath because it is holy to you. Anyone who desecrates it will be put to death. Those who do any work on a Sabbath must be cut off from their people. For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is a day of Sabbath rest. Holy to the Lord. Whoever does work on the Sabbath day is to be put to death. The Israelites are to observe the Sabbath, celebrating it for generations to come as a lasting covenant. It will be a sign between me and the Israelites forever. For in six days the Lord made the heavens in the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed. When the Lord finished speaking to Moses on Mount Sinai, he gave him the two tablets of the covenant law, the tablets of stone, and scribed by the finger of God. Okay, not sure why God needs to repeat the Sabbath here because we've already had Sabbath laws, but he does repeat what was already mentioned

12:30in the Ten Commandments. And then the most important line in this whole thing here is that last line of finally the Lord has done talking to Moses. He's been up here 40 days and 40 nights. And he's gotten all these instructions. He now knows how to make the priestly garments, how to annoy the priests, how to make the tabernacle. He's been taking notes like crazy, and God has also given him these two stone tablets with the Ten Commandments, or with the tablets of the covenant law. We usually assume that that's the Ten Commandments on there. And he sends him down the mountain. And that's where trouble starts, but we're going to say that for next week.
