Could Penn State be the other team that picks up the slack for the rest of the big 10 conference this season despite a struggle over the weekend. Penn State still did win. Can't save the same for Oregon. Can't save the same for well Ohio State did play Texas, right? Michigan bounce back. So we're going to go through all those games. Yeah, they lose to Western Michigan. Sorry, they beat Western Michigan technically, technically.

2:21And then they come back and they bounce back against Oklahoma. So we got to break down the high stakes games over this weekend. But I want to start big picture, Jacob, and definitely get your reaction because Indiana is a buzz saw now, granted they're not playing anyone right now. Penn State's not playing anyone right now. But the rest of the conference and it's particularly right, Oregon. Yes, Michigan as well, even though they beat Oklahoma, I will factor in the Western Michigan game to Washington is Washington. Okay. That first and second tier, right? That's what you and I have talked about. And it was a struggle this weekend. It was. It was a struggle in college football. And nobody loves it more than the SEC. Nobody loves it more than the ACC. Nobody loves it more than the big 12. Anybody not named the big 10 loves to see the mighty fall because everybody knows that this is still the best conference in college football. But two weeks in Zach, there are cracks in this foundation. There are cracks in that argument because look Ohio State going on the road and losing

3:26the Texas and way they lost no doubt about it. I was going to say in a vacuum on paper, if you just looked at the box score like man, hard fought game came down to the end. Texas grinded it out good for them. The way they lost, I'm absolutely with you. I think there's a severe issue there and the problem is Ryan Day, in my opinion, then you've got Oregon who clearly is suffering because they lost both coordinators. That's a point that I was on. You were spot on. I want to give you props for that. And wait a call that way to call that out. You're seeing it. I mean, you're seeing it happen in real time. And then look, Michigan's win was awesome. Nobody gave them a chance and they came down and got it done. I think that says more about Oklahoma than it does Michigan, but it's too early to tell. Then there's Indiana who has looked good, but we haven't played anybody. I'll be the first one to admit that. Then there's yeah, Penn State, Washington who have struggled early, but trying to get their footing. So yeah, the big 10 might be in trouble. Here's Seiko if we don't figure things out. And again, nobody loves this more than the SEC unfortunately.

4:29The Ohio State came in again. We'll go through that a lot more along with Oregon because can these teams bounce back, right? They both take a step back and granted, I understand it is the Texas game, but it's the way that you blow a 20 point lead. Blue it. Blue it. Regardless. So yes, the, and it's over the course of the first two weeks, right? Because you have the Rutgers results. Okay. You have again, Washington was supposed to be one of those dark horse contenders to maybe sneak into the playoff. And okay, well, it's the rivalry game against Washington State, but they were essentially a foretouch down favorite in that game. And then they're foretouch down favorites again. And it goes down to literally the final second in this week's game. So against Utah State. Yeah, against against a very bad Utah State team. Don't worry. Purdue lost again, folks. Don't worry. They went to double over time and got beat by Wayne for that game was actually pretty

5:31good. It was actually a pretty cool game, but Purdue sucks. And that's just what we expect. Can we? So we're counting on UCLA. Oh, God. We're starting to bring Maryland. Are we really counting on UCLA? They had to score 21 points in the fourth quarter against San Diego State to survive at home in the Rose Bowl. Like, I don't, I mean, we're counting on, oh, Zach, do you know how far we've fallen in two weeks? We're relying on Iowa to possibly save the big 10 who dominated Sihock who looked good. And I know the score was close, but I think Iowa was clearly the better team. And that's a rivalry game. It always comes down to one possession. So yeah, outside of Indiana being at the top, we're relying on Penn State who's still a question mark. Iowa, who's always a question mark. And maybe UCLA or Washington who have not been sharp early, I mean, I don't know, man, the big 10 early this season is just not as strong, not as deep, not as talented. Maybe as we thought, and we haven't even gotten to comforts play yet.

6:35What happens when all these teams start to pick up the other and do this thing that the SEC claims that it does, which is tear itself apart. But the big 10 very well could be in that scenario too. If there are not several teams who separate themselves. And right now, I think Indiana is the only team that's done that. Indiana is the only team that is significantly overperforming right now. And it is tough to wait that because of the teams that they played. And Penn State and Penn State and week one overperformed expectations. But then got a little bit of a reality check against Temple USC. I would say USC is overperforming its expectations to this point. Maryland and that's why I throw out Maryland and UCLA because technically they are. But that's the, that's the thing. Everybody else and it's the big hitters, right? We were expecting Oregon and Ohio State to be title contenders.

7:37And it's not that they can't be. Yeah. But am I am I going to double down and say absolutely, Oregon's ready to bounce back? No, I don't know. I don't know. I would still be okay, I can double down on Ohio State. I can double down on Ohio State because that's Texas at Texas in a one point game. But they were such a better team. They were such the better team. I know in Ohio State did get a break early in the game. They got a break early in the game. That's just that's Ryan Day. That's a Ryan Day problem. I'm sorry. It is. I mean, I know he's a national champion, but I think a lot of people could end up being national champions in Ohio State because of the talent around them. I've seen him be a coach, do it for generations. And like the Julian saying thing with with quarterback, it's the same type of conversation. You benefit from an NFL superstar cast at wide receiver. You benefit from the surplus of talent and the resources that you have at Ohio State. I mean, it's what happened with Ed Ourser on at LSU when Joe Burrow and an entire NFL roster

8:39walked through the front door. I'm not saying that Ed Ourser on and Ryan Day are in the same category, but Ryan Day is the one to blame for the loss on Saturday night at Austin. He is the only one to blame for that loss in Austin, Texas because they, I mean, they were bullying Texas had, I mean, had people talking like man, Texas is done. Arches, not what we thought. Steve Sarkijan is a bad coach. This has happened too many times here at Texas. And then all of a sudden, Ohio State just like, yeah, yeah, we'll just cruise to the end. We'll just punt the ball away and we'll just play defense. And here comes Texas in the fourth quarter, the most inseparable fan base around archmaning right now. And now they have a reason to celebrate. You gave them life. You gave the SEC life. And I blame Ryan Day and Ohio State for that. All right. So we started to break down the Ohio State game and we're going to do the same for Oregon, right? Okay. Ohio State losing to Texas. And yeah, they looked better, but still that is Texas after all. Oklahoma State. Well, now we're talking about comparisons that Oregon is last year's version of Penn State.

11:49Let's get to the organ Oklahoma state game. We can talk about the Michigan game because how do you lose to the team that technically lost to Western Michigan? All right. And I mean, that's a that's a bad look for the SEC because Oklahoma couldn't couldn't beat that team. So we'll talk about some of these other results here and then get to how Indiana and Penn state could be the two teams to save the big 10 and USC as well. Oregon though. You called it from a mile away. I didn't I said, Hey, you know, Dan landing knows what he's doing because it can he dealing him right? Will Stein. He's got a proven track record for identifying and finding the next set of coordinators. He's used to this. That was that was my reasoning. He's used to this. He knows what he's doing. Maybe this time around he's wrong. Again, this wasn't Oregon losing to Texas. This was Oregon losing to Oklahoma state. Granded this one wasn't still water, but this is also the same Oklahoma state team that lost to Tulsa the week before kind of in a similar fashion, right?

12:49To Michigan that you shouldn't have lost that game. And they bounce back and they looked like a significantly better team across the board. That was one of the worst Oregon performances that I've ever seen under Dan landing. I know Spencer McLaughlin, our counterpart backed it up with with what he had to say about this game. I I'm extremely concerned because now do they parallel the the Penn State team from a season ago, maybe in some respects, but not entirely. And again, I can speak to that because I lived at first hand in a good way or a bad way, though, Zach, I parallelism like talent and expectations or just like performances on the field. Not an expectations of the national title, but they have such a significant chance to rebound. And I don't think there were so many rumors about how James Franklin was trying to get into contract negotiations and the athletic director had told him to wait. So unless Dan landing in Oregon or dealing with that behind the scenes, there are other

13:52factors and caveats that aren't here with Oregon. I don't think Dan landing is on the hot seat. Yes, they have title aspirations and it would be disappointing. But there was it seemed like the James Franklin tenure was was on its last thread. It will. Whereas Dan. Franklin had been there double or triple the time as Dan landing in Oregon. Yes. I mean, and but that's the problem though is this was the years act. This was the year that Oregon invested everything that they had into this team. And that's what yes, Spencer was telling us the host of locked on ducks was like, this is the year. And there's already conversations out there very similar to what you guys went through and happy Valley of it. If you can't win it this year, you'll never win it. And those conversations are starting to ramp up for Dan landing at Oregon. And look, I hate it. I do as a college football fan as a big 10 fan. I think Dan landing is awesome. I respect him as a coach. I think he's a good dude. Great coach.

14:53I turn Oregon around. He is built for that Oregon job. But if you can't win with the talent and the money that you have and the resources that you're disposal like at some point, you've got to make that call. And we have seen that in the history of college football. The most significant one was Mark Rick that Georgia. I go back to that one. That's a guy that was winning eight, nine, ten games a year, but was not winning national titles. They fired him, hired Kirby smart and the rest is history. Penn State's trying to do that. And Oregon very well could fall into that as well. And gosh, what a day that would be. This season doesn't go the way it's supposed to. You have to start having those internal conversations. But here's the thing that Oregon's got going for it. A week to loss out of conference doesn't kill you. Not now, not in this era of college football, not anymore, where more teams make it. That's the whole big 10 flavor. Yeah, exactly. Road games at USC Illinois, Ohio State, home games against UCLA, Michigan and Washington. Their resume, if they go on and win, will be just fine.

15:56What they can't do is lose multiple games in big 10 play. And they really need to become Oklahoma state fans because I don't know how good Oklahoma state's going to be in conference play. But if that team ends up being six and six, that's going to go down as a horrific loss for Dan landing. Yeah, is that just, is that just a flash in the pan for Eric Morris and Drew Mestemaker? They got up for that game because again, they did lose by two scores to Tulsa. They got beat by Tulsa. That wasn't just like Hail Mary Winn. That was Tulsa beat there for four quarter or two weeks ago. But I would say that Oklahoma state beat Oregon for four quarters, even though the score was close, Oklahoma state was the better football team on Saturday. There's no doubt in my mind. I like this. I like that it is more difficult to judge these college football teams and that there's parity in that anyone's on upshut watch any given week. Again, nobody was expecting a very few people were expecting Oklahoma state to do that to Oregon coming off of the Tulsa loss.

16:56And it happened and it's kind of like the same thing with Penn State last year. I don't think people said nine and three at best, you know, you're, you're, that's a nine and three team. Okay. But nobody expected the six and six firing James Franklin. What if Oregon goes six and six and fires Dan landing, right? It's a possibility. You can't count it out. I'm not taking, I'm not making that prediction. But again, that's what makes college football so much more fun these days is the variety of outcomes are off the charts nowadays with the transfer portal in an aisle. Nobody's safe. Nobody is safe from an upset despite again, what do we think Oklahoma state spending in an I L 20 million? 25? They, I don't think they have it. I really don't. I don't think they have that. It's given the fact that you're talking about a team that had lost 12 games in a row and had not beaten a team like Oregon in years. Like, I just don't think they've got the investment in that. But maybe they're getting it because of a new coach and new quarterback and things. And a win like this though, we'll spark that.

17:58It will show them, hey, we are capable of winning because they still technically are a power conference team. And you want to talk about spending? What about Oklahoma? They've got to be in just crumbling despair on Sunday and Monday because of how much they're paying Brent Vinnables, how much they're paying John Matier, how much they're paying that defense. And you go on the road and drop a big fat egg against a Michigan team that on paper had to use a Hail Mary to get out of Western Michigan. And nobody was picking the Wolverines on Saturday, not a soul. And yet here come the Wolverines. Here comes Bryce Underwood and they find a way to get it done. Oklahoma's got to be just depressed this week. Yeah, that's inexcusable for Oklahoma to an extent. Now granted they had to travel. They had to go to the to the big house, but that's supposed to be, hey, Oklahoma's a dark horse team to get into the playoff and all this stuff. And Michigan basically tripped its way into a victory. But I do believe, I still believe even though they lost that, they won that game.

19:01They're going to be held for a loss by the committee, by the AP voters, even after beating Oklahoma. See, I think it's a wash. I think they'll forget about Western Michigan. Now that you beat a top 15 team in the SEC, I think it's, I don't know why you can't, I don't know why you can't count. They're mutually exclusive. Okay. They are. You lost to Western Michigan and you also beat Oklahoma. I don't think one cancels the other in my opinion. I think you should wait it appropriately. You were at home in prime time against a team that's in the Matt conference and you needed, and we know if the hell Mary happened organically, it'd be different. Yeah. But you did lose to Western Michigan until powers that be intervened. Okay. The conversation's the same for Oklahoma State. If you think about it, funny enough, you lost to a bad team and then turn around and beat a really good team at home. And you can now, for whatever reason, let's say Oklahoma State goes on a massive run. And the big 12 is not this crazy beast of a conference like we think it is. They've got two ranked games on their schedule in big 12 play.

20:05I'm still holding that Western Michigan game against Michigan and it would be a disservice by the college football playoff committee to not do that, even though they beat Oklahoma. So I just don't think they will. I really don't think they'll forget all about it. Well, yeah, and it was week one. And it seems like the later, the better, if you do better, late in the season, resince you bias. Yeah, recency bias. That's a real thing in college football and that happens over and over and over again. So okay, does Michigan run the table? We'll talk about our two teams in a second, but I was kind of under the impression and then speaking to some people and then hearing Joel Klats say, well, Bryce Underwood's worse and everything and just, you know, sell out on this Michigan team. Okay. And I kind of had the impression that, hey, you won on the Hail Mary despite how it happened, that might inject some life into this Michigan team that, hey, we're still there. And we, we are good. Like I just thought it would motivate them a little more and it absolutely did. It absolutely. And then you have all the negative talk. They see all that and that's kind of fuel to the fire as well.

21:07So does Michigan continue to parlay this into a win? Yeah, they'll beat you, TEP. I think they'll beat you, TEP. There's no assuming Iowa. You got Penn State. You got Indiana. Are we thinking Michigan's kind of back where they should be? I don't think so. I think they do have one of the nation's best defenses. I think they have proven that the first two weeks. But look, Bryce Underwood didn't just pull this miraculous performance on Saturday against the whole. He's going to look good to me. Nine of 17 passing nine of his quarterback rating was less than 75. He ran the ball well. 18 carries, 87 yards and a touchdown. They have to use him as a battering ram or else this offense doesn't move. And they can't rely on that. He won't survive if he tries to do that all year against teams like Iowa and Penn State and Indiana Ohio State. Like he will not survive the season. And I don't know what Michigan's backup quarterback situation looks like. They already learned it with replacing it. If Underwood starting, it's not good. So no, I don't trust Michigan to go on a run.

22:09I don't trust Iowa to go on a run. I don't trust who are some other undefeated teams not named Indiana Penn State. I just, I don't trust those teams yet to go UCLA. I'm not there yet. USC. I'm kind of out there. We have to get them out there. I mean, I think we need to talk about them. Yeah, because I, I think USC Indiana and Penn State are the teams that the big 10 is relying on right now in terms of the undefeated through two weeks of the season. Well, it ain't Rutgers. We know that much. It's never Rutgers. Never. All right. Well, the Hoosiers are definitively that one team. I am bought in. I'm very much bought into USC. I just think they have a gauntlet of a schedule. That's a talented team. But can they survive their schedule? And Penn State looks like a good team, but are they benefiting from an easy schedule? 25:20download game time today. Indiana Penn State, USC, those are the teams that have I think started off the best. And again, I will give Ohio State someone of a mulligan. I think they're a title contending team, but we already broke them down. Jacob, give me the low down on Indiana here because I think they're performing. I think they're performing the way I expected them to. Kurt Signetti is a really good coach. You retained your coordinators, Josh Hoover. Is a good quarterback and he's in a better system. Charlie Becker is really good. Nick Marsh is really good. Pick your boys and you got your two running back. Monster set up again. The defense is firing on all cylinders, but it's an easy schedule. They should they should already be doing this. I understand that. But it's how clean do you play the game? Okay, you can win and beat those teams by four, five, six touchdowns and still not look great doing it. Yeah. So I'm not watching Indiana up close and personal. Are they winning the way that they're supposed to?

26:22And it's not I'm just scanning a box score and they just they check my artificial boxes. Yeah, they're they're winning the way that they are supposed to. They are. They're doing what they need to do against inferior opponents and Josh Hoover looks good. The defense is getting better. It fixed a lot of the problems that they had in week one open field tackling aggression and communication fixed all of those things even when both of your starting corners were out, they should be back in a week or two. But the running game is dominant. The receivers are the best in the country. Indiana is doing what they need to do. And I want to stress this again that I wish Indiana was playing better teams. You can only learn so much playing Howard's of the world where you were winning by so much that they shortened the fourth quarter on Saturday. Like you can only learn so much. But I do believe that Indiana is a top three team in college football. I think Texas deserves the number one spot, which is where they are in the AP poll. I think Indiana should be right there with them. I think Georgia is in that conversation too.

27:23Notre Dame is right there behind them. I think Miami belongs in that conversation as well. But three of those teams have played. Nobody's Indiana, Georgia and Miami. You can give Notre Dame credit for playing Wisconsin, but we know Wisconsin is not this big and bad big 10 team. Yeah, they could be. And I think they're talented, but catching Wisconsin week one doesn't tell me a whole lot. I think Indiana could have won that game by the amount that Notre Dame did. And of course, Texas playing Ohio State. So I think Indiana is the best team in the conference. And I think Indiana is one of the best teams in the country. But I am ready for them to play somebody. I'm going to temple like Penn State played. And I know you're going to talk about the nitty-lions here at a moment. Yeah. Give us somebody like that just to give us a little bit more to go off of a little bit more credibility, if you will. And the problem is Northwestern is eh. Oh, sorry about that. Northwestern is eh. Rutgers is terrible. And those are Indiana's first two big 10 games.

28:25So it's going to be a while. It's going to be a road game at Nebraska before we truly figure out if Indiana is as good as they were last year, but looking in the details and the small things, yes, Indiana is a top team in the country. But tell me about Penn State because scoreboard watchers were probably not overly impressed with the game against temple this past weekend. And that's a game that, you know, being there in person, you just see the points that are left on the football field. And Penn State wasn't just like they get a lucky break. And they were setting themselves up to succeed and they just weren't finishing plays. So kind of tip that with what you will. I look at that as you, but you have to score the touchdown, right? At the end of the day. Y'all can go. It's concerning when you get goal to go situations and you can't punch it in against the temple team. But again, Penn State would drive down the field and they really had no issues moving the football. They were getting pressure on the quarterback, enforcing him outside of the pocket. And that's a former Penn State QB.

29:26So maybe he was just he was just feeling, he was feeling great. High on life. Yeah. He was playing against his former team. So he kind of turned into the super quarterback on Gibbon plays, but it was never a down to the wire game where temples in it. And they're just one score away and something like that. The defense held them to three points. Penn State had multiple red zone opportunities that they should have converted that they didn't. I'm looking at it from the full scope that Penn State did beat this team. It just didn't translate into the score that it showed up. They left touchdowns on the football field. I would look at that game and say it should have been 41 to 10. It ended up being 27, 27 to nine, temple misted two point conversion. So 41 to 10. And I don't think people would be having the same conversations if Penn State just converts inside the red zone a couple of times. So does that mean based off of two weeks compared to everybody else on the big 10 is Penn State a team that the big 10 should be relying on should big 10. You can't be relying on it. You can. You can.

30:26Okay. And we're going to get it. We're going to get that answer directly between Penn State and USC because I think there's going to be a bunch of people that are going to say, well, I'm going to side with USC at the end of the day. And you should. I am a USC believer. This is a big is more talented right now than Penn State. Oh, yeah. I'd say so on paper, but coaching again, Matt Campbell is beaten Lincoln Riley teams in the past. Really good Lincoln Riley teams in the past. So what where does the coaching stand? And you have USC's old defensive coordinator in in Daneland. So that game that game itself will answer a lot of questions when we get to it in October. But I think you can buy into both USC and Penn State if you aren't already as teams that can be representatives of the big 10 this season. All right. I would like to see Oregon bounce back. I would like to see Ohio State bounce back. I'm not. I'm not a scared away bio high of state. I think will be just fine. I am a little bit scared. I'm scared about Oregon right now. I am too. I would probably take USC in that organ.

31:27I would take USC over Oregon right now, if you, which is in the Coliseum, that's in Los Angeles. And that's two weeks from now that is like two weeks from now can Oregon improve mainly defensively this week against Portland state, right? Can they improve and help them? I don't think so. I really don't. I don't think so. I mean, maybe it does because it allows the coordinators to, but that but Portland state's not going to. It's a scheme issue. It's not a talent issue because Oregon's going to be able to out talent its way through Portland state and USC in the other hand, they go to Rutgers this weekend. Like, are they really going to improve? Like USC could be all high and mighty, but they're not going to be proven until they get to the Oregon game. So we're going to learn a lot in the next couple of weeks as big 10 play begins. There are some big games to open up that schedule and look, Penn State's kind of in the same realm that Indiana is buffaloed this weekend was constant to open up big 10 play and then Northwestern like Penn State will be 5 and 0 without even thinking about it.

32:30It was constant. It should be tricky, but then you play USC. So if we want to say that Penn State is one of the teams to look at it and the big 10s relying on them to be good to save the conference, we're not going to know that until mid October. And I don't love that, but that's just how the schedule falls. The way I'm expecting it USC and Penn State should both be undefeated by that by that time and should be both top 10 teams based off what we've seen around them. Yes, I agree. I agree with that. Part of that has to do with schedule. Part of that has to do with opponents. Part of that has me looking at Penn State and saying, okay, I was impressed in week one. Yeah. I have reason to believe that week two just doesn't tell the full story of it all. And that's and that's still a good team, but they do benefit from an easy schedule. I know that much. I'm not afraid to admit that they're not playing the strongest of the strong in the big 10 this season. So I wish it wasn't that way, but that's just how it works. And unfortunately, Indiana has decided that that's the path they want to go and it's the

33:32path that they will continue to go. They want a national championship doing it. You're not going to tell them any other way. I do believe in Indiana as the team out in front right now. Indiana is the team that's out in front. Ohio State is slightly behind them. And then Oregon takes a massive step backwards and and USC moves up Penn State moves up. So yeah, the big 10 hierarchy is just shifting around Washington falls a lot. I am concerned. I'm concerned about that. Maybe they're holding back place. I don't know.
