Tukarask never quite got the love he deserved in Boston, and I'm here to change that
1:20
on this bonus, Happy Birthday, episode of Lockdown, Boston Bruins.
1:26
Your Lockdown Bruins, your daily podcast on the Boston Bruins, part of the Lockdown
1:36
Podcast Network, your team, every day.
1:40
What is up Bruins fans and welcome back to the Lockdown Boston Bruins Podcast, part of
1:45
the Lockdown Podcast Network, now the number one sports podcast network.
1:50
I'm your host Ian McLaren, I am a lifelong Boston Bruins fan and I have been covering
1:54
this team and the NHL for various major outlets for nearly 20 years.
2:00
Today is Tuesday, March 10th, it is Tukarask's 39th birthday as Bessie makes an appearance
2:07
on the podcast, and we are here to celebrate the best goal tender in Boston Bruins history.
2:17
The Bruins take on the Kings tonight at TD Garden, going from their 13th straight home
2:22
win, I previewed that on the previous episode of Lockdown Boston Bruins to go check that
2:27
out if you have not done so already, but for this special bonus episode, Tukarask's 39th
2:33
birthday, I'm here to discuss his legacy and why he deserves so much more love than he
2:42
received when he was active as a player for the Boston Bruins.
2:47
The Bruins have had Hall of Famers in net, Stanley Cup champions, true legends, but the
2:53
best goalie in franchise history is the kid from Finland who never got that appreciation.
3:00
And again, we're going to break down why he's the greatest goalie in Bruins history, his
3:04
misunderstood legacy and how his impact is still shaping the goal tending for the Boston
3:12
Look, the biggest takeaway here, he's the best goalie in Bruins history straight up.
3:18
And the numbers are pretty overwhelming.
3:21
308 wins, which is a franchise record, a 921 career safe percentage, 2.28 goals against
3:29
average, 52 shutouts, and a Vesna trophy in 2014.
3:37
And one of the knocks against Tukarask is that, well, he never won a Stanley Cup and he
3:43
was not able to succeed in the playoffs.
3:47
And yes, the Boston Bruins did not win a Stanley Cup while he was the starter for this
3:55
He was the backup to Tim Thomas.
3:58
He had been the starter in the previous year and was the goalie of record when the Bruins
4:04
lost to the flyers in that reverse sweep.
4:08
But Rask's numbers, again, his regular season safe percentage, 921, his regular season
4:16
goals against average, 228.
4:18
His numbers actually improve in the postseason.
4:23
His career playoff safe percentage is 925.
4:28
And he had a 2.22 playoff goals against average, 57 playoff wins.
4:36
Statistically speaking, there has never been a Bruins goalie as consistently dominant.
4:42
Yeah, you had Tim Thomas with all due respect.
4:46
And of course, we love Tim Thomas around here.
4:49
He had that unbelievable run in 2011.
4:55
But he did not have the longevity of a 2.
4:59
Rask played 564 career games in the regular season for the Boston Bruins as well as a
5:08
ton of playoff appearances.
5:12
Tim Thomas, he came to Boston kind of at the tail, not the tail end, but kind of the
5:19
reclamation stage of his career.
5:22
And regular season wise, he played in far fewer games, 426 total.
5:31
Some with the Panthers, a few with the Stars.
5:34
You know, a couple seasons fewer than 2.
5:41
Rask and while he was impressive, 920 safe percentage, 2.
5:49
Rask did it for Australia longer, like well into 2022 after going through that surgery.
6:00
So that's one reason.
6:02
And it shows up in the fact that Rask is the regular season leader in terms of wins
6:12
Nobody, Tim Thomas is close, Jerry Chievers, Tiny Thompson even back in the day, great
6:19
goal tenders, but Rask's longevity and elite efficiency is unmatched in Boston Bruins history.
6:26
Now, don't forget, he came to the Bruins thanks to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
6:32
He was drafted by Toronto in 2005, traded to Boston for Andrew Raycroft in 2006.
6:40
One of the most lopsided goalie trades ever.
6:44
The Bruins ended up getting their franchise goalie for like 15 years while Andrew Raycroft
6:51
kind of fell off as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
6:56
He did not win a Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins as the starter.
7:01
But the 2013 playoff run for two grask is one of the best goal tending performances
7:08
in modern NHL playoff history, a 940 safe percentage.
7:15
And he was in net for like game seven comeback versus the Leafs.
7:21
He helped shut down like peak, crossbeat, malkin and the Pittsburgh penguins and very nearly
7:28
stole the cup from the Chicago Black Hawks and were it not for some key injuries for
7:34
the Bruins and those two goals in 17 seconds, then perhaps he would have had that Stanley
7:45
Either way, 940 safe percentage through the playoffs, like that is unbelievable over the
7:55
And he fell a couple wins short, but very much in consmouth consideration that season.
8:02
And if the Bruins had won 100%, he's the consmouth trophy winner, although David Crachey had
8:09
a pretty remarkable run that year as well.
8:13
And that's not all that took a rascal accomplished in his career.
8:16
We're going to continue breaking down his legacy and celebrate the man that he was, the man
8:22
that he is, the man that he will always be remembered as here as this bonus episode
8:26
of Lockdown Boston Bruins continues.

10:54
Took a ask is without question the greatest Bruins gold tender of all time.
11:01
Now the comparison of course is Tim Thomas because he won the Stanley Cup with the Boston
11:08
That's the guy that we remember most.
11:09
There are examples from the past year at Gvers, Tiny Thompson, etc.
11:14
But the fact that Rask immediately followed Tim Thomas, who effectively stole a Stanley
11:19
Cup away from the Vancouver Canucks, it hurts Rask's ultimate legacy, right?
11:27
Tim Thomas won a Consmouth, he was a 2011 Stanley Cup hero and a pretty iconic personality
11:35
to boot, which kind of backfired when he didn't go to the White House.
11:40
But still, he was a guy who we all loved and revered because he won that cup.
11:51
He was also a two time winner of the Vesna trophy in 2009 in 2011 as the NHL's best gold
12:00
For me, Rask gets a bit of a bump because he has that more longer run with the Boston
12:09
Bruins, even though he's quieter, more technical, less flashy, perhaps.
12:17
People boost Thomas, and rightly so, it's like an impossible debate in some ways, but
12:24
the common narrative that Rask couldn't win the big one, and that's why he is knocked
12:29
down a peg below Thomas, doesn't really hold up because I already talked about the 2013
12:36
run to the Stanley Cup final in which he had a 940% save percentage.
12:41
I can't say that enough, 22 games, 1466 minutes played, 46 goals allowed, a 1.88 goals against
12:52
average, and a 940% save percentage.
12:57
It's insane how good he was that season.
13:01
The Bruins also got back to the Stanley Cup playoffs, sorry, the Stanley Cup final in
13:07
2019, and a 934 save percentage for to Rask in those 24 games.
13:16
And again, he was a consmitrophy candidate if not favorite that year, and the Bruins
13:24
just were not able to beat Jordan Binnington early.
13:27
The score in that game 7, 2019, should have been 4-0, 4-1 after 20 minutes.
13:34
Jordan Binnington made some unreal saves in the first period.
13:39
The Bruins made a couple miscues, and you play that game a hundred times.
13:44
The Bruins win, let's say 97, and Tukar Rask, again, if the Bruins had been able to score
13:50
that game, he would have won the consmit.
13:53
It wasn't on him that they lost that game.
13:56
It wasn't on him that they lost in 2013.
14:00
He's the goalie of record, but you say he couldn't win the big one.
14:04
Well, why do Patrice Bergeron, David Crachey, why don't they get that same knock?
14:10
Zidane Ocharah, why don't they get that same knock on their records?
14:14
Just because Rask was the goalie, those, especially game 7, 2019, that was not his
14:21
malperformance that resulted in that game.
14:25
One of the best playoff goalies of his generation, who just happened to be on the wrong side
14:30
of a couple Stanley Cup finals, 2019, again, one of the most dominant playoff runs ever
14:39
by a Bruins goalie.
14:41
He carried the Bruins to game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.
14:44
You look back at that team.
14:45
They didn't really have much business being in the Stanley Cup Final that year.
14:50
You have Carson Kuhlman on your top line in the game 7, and you're blaming the goalie?
14:58
He also had an underrated personality.
15:00
People forget how funny, self-aware he was, blunt media quotes, sarcastic sense of humor,
15:06
fiercely competitive, throw-in-mill crates, teammates loved him, and his legacy carries
15:12
You see Boston's goalie development, Bob Essence's shaping and molding, so many high-end
15:19
goal tenders, and their identity is largely built around elite goal tending.
15:24
It went from Tim Thomas to Tukarask, to Linus Almark, out of Jeremy Swaman, and Jonas
15:31
Carbosalo on a good night.
15:33
Rask largely set that standard.
15:37
Tim Thomas like blew it out of the water, but Rask, consistent longevity, year after
15:45
year, and taken Bruins teams that had no business going to the Stanley Cup Final arguably, especially
15:51
in 2019, all the way to the Promised Land, except for that one lone win missing.
15:58
He might not have gotten the love he deserved while he played, but history is correcting
16:03
When the dust settles, he'll be remembered as a franchise win leader, Vesna Trophy winner,
16:08
to Stanley Cup finals.
16:09
He does have his name on the cup in 2011, one of the best goalies of his generation, and
16:15
he should be in the Hall of Fame when it's all set and done.
16:20
Bruins legend, one of the best of his generation, happy birthday to Karrask, where do you rank
16:26
