How's it going everyone? Welcome to Grip Block,
Foundation Discals Weekly Podcast. I'm Hunter, joined by Trevor today.
I am still in Dallas, Trevor's back home.
Disc South was this past weekend. It went awesome.
And I'm staying down here to film some content with Brodie over the next few days.
So we're doing it remote today, but still got a lot of stuff
to go over. And it should be a good show. Before we get into all the fun topics
and all the random announcements the Disc Golf Pro tours made over the past week,
I want to take a moment to thank our sponsors.
Today's video is brought to you by Elevation Discs,
rubber materials ranging from super floppy OG to the much different eco firm
make for a very unique Disc Golf experience.
These things really pride themselves in their ability to hit and sit, both when they just
hit and land. It's also when they spike in and they don't roll. They have a very
grippy texture, a variety of molds from understable, like the coy to overstable,
like the screech and even some drivers and stuff like that. You can pick,
you can pick them up over at foundationdisc.com.
Personally, I think some of our favorites are the coy. The OG one is the interceptor.
That's the original bowl that kind of started it all. The screech, like I said,
the overstable approach disc, but I love the approaches more than anything just because
I don't personally bag them, but whenever I've used them, that's where I find the most utility
because I think that on the shorter up shots, the really floppy grippiness of the disc allows it
just to hit and sit. We don't have so many like super weird steep greens, but whenever I see one,
I'm like, dang, you know, it actually kind of would be nice to be able to jump up this
up with the coy because then I know I don't have to worry about a roll away. Even if you like,
hit cage, the thing just drops. So it takes all the stress out of that. If that sounds like your
home course, you should really check these things out. So again, go over there foundationdisc.com,
check out the full elevation lineup and thanks again to them for sponsoring a day's episode.
And while I'm sorry about foundationdisc.com, some of you might not know. We don't just do
podcasts and YouTube videos and stuff like that, but we're a full online retailer as well. So we
have stocked this, the special drops apparel and more. You can find all that over foundationdisc.com,
plus if you live in the US, you can shop here and all of your disc golf discs are covered by foundation
care. I mean, you have 30 days to use it, abuse it, let your dog chew on it, run over with a
lawnmower. We don't care. If you don't like it for whatever reason, head over to the site, fill
up the foundation care form and we will pay to exchange it. We will send you a paid-for shipping
label. Your disc comes back in. We ship out one that you know that you love. We pay for the
shipping that way too. So you can literally try disc golf discs completely risk-free if you live in
the USA. You don't do anything special. Just every disc you buy on foundationdisc.com is covered
by that. So sweet, let's hop into this episode. We're kicking things off with a pretty cool
announcement, in my opinion, which is the open at Austin this year is going to be titled the
Barbosol Open at Austin, presented by Home to Suites by Hilton. So what's so cool about this?
Obviously it's a random one-two pairing, right? But in my opinion, what's so cool about this is
we see a the continuation of Barbosol as a partner, which according to the pro-tour announcement
has been now five years of them working with the pro-tour, and b, a tournament that is fully
presented by outside disc golf sponsors, which I think, correct or wrong, might be one of the
first times of the only time I've seen this? Ah, yeah, I don't know. I can't off the top of my head,
but it is certainly exceedingly rare to see. I mean, because we had, like, was originally, well,
originally, Des Moines was just true bank. Like, I don't think that was just Romania.
But a lot of times it was in title. Yeah, I said a lot of times they're combined with a disc
off manufacturers. Well, like, play it again in sports with Jonesboro. I think always had.
I don't know, maybe not. Maybe I'm wrong. Yeah, I think that a lot of people don't realize,
like, maybe don't realize that, like, the title sponsors even up for grabs because it's so
uncommon for anything to get title sponsors beyond manufacturers. And maybe what people also
don't realize is, like, when you have these discraft great lakes opens, and you have these
MVP opens, like, that is the manufacturer basically helping out and purchasing those title
sponsors. Like, they are, they play a huge part in keeping the pro tour operational. And so when
you, like, these are a big sale. And when we can sell those outside companies, like, the goal is,
I mean, look at the PGA tour, like, the idea is that all of these title sponsors are purchased
by outside disc off companies. Like, that would be perfect. So I think it's like a super, super
pro look for this tournament. I mean, to some people, it might seem backwards. It's weird. Like,
oh, now it's called the bar was solved. And like, but this is the point. Like, the point is to
have these things named after these nonendemic sponsors. And so I think this is like this legitimizes
this event as one of the really big deals on tour that it's been able to do this. And I hope
to see this trick. I think this is like another really awesome step in the right direction for
the pro tour this year. Like, they're on fire right now. Yeah, that's all I was like, I'm wondering
how much of this is or if any is because of power ball as far as like the floodgates opening.
You know, like, okay, now we have a legitimized partner. Obviously, Barbosol already was like the
tour championship sponsor. And I've seen them doing like the closed shave replays and stuff. But
this is a whole nother step. So now that we have Barbosol here in the home to sweets, obviously,
presenting sponsor, much smaller sponsorships here. But the fact that they still were able to have
that not be a discraft or discmania or something like that. Like, that still speaks volumes,
in my opinion, because you're still going to have those manufacturers like helping these events
in some way, shape or form, because they want to be vending there. They want to be doing stuff like
that. And what this also allows for, I don't know if this will happen at the open at Austin. But
when you have a discraft, presents an event, a lot of times discrafts like the main vendor there.
But what it allows, in my opinion, when you have like no manufacturer tied to the event is it
could turn it into something where now all the manufacturers are involved there in some way, shape
or form, because it's not like, oh, this is a discraft event or this is a discmania event.
And so I don't know. I'm very excited about this. I'm hoping this is the first of many, probably not
this year. I would imagine that most of their stuff locked in this year. But I'm hoping this
is a sign of things to come where maybe for whatever reason, it's just disc golf is getting easier to
sell. The pros were getting easier to sell. Or if it's just, oh, well, since Powerball's in,
they see something we want to jump into. I'm not sure. Yeah. Well, admittedly, the timing is kind
of weird where you do wonder, I mean, open at Austin is around the corner. Like, it's not,
it's not as early as normal, but it's still in a few months. And so it is interesting to consider
like, how long has this deal been locked in? Is this something where it was like last second?
Like, hey, we just locked it in and we're still like, are we still trying to sell events on our
calendar this year? Or is this something they just chose the time at the kind of, at the beginning
of the season when the news cycle was a little bit heavier with disc golf fans? And if that is the
case, does that mean there are other title sponsor announcements that just hasn't happened yet?
Like, that kind of sets that precedent. You know, I wonder what the, I need to look at the
schedule now, because what was the open at Austin? Like, do they already have the logos for all
these out? You know what I'm saying? Like, you can scroll forward and look. Some of them, they did
not, but I feel like, I feel like that was early. Like, when they first announced the schedule,
because like, some of them didn't have names yet. Like, big, easy and the, and the Charlotte one
as well. Like, they didn't have names originally, but. Oh, interesting. So Northwest, I'm not
this loaded. I just have bad Wi-Fi Northwest. I thought had no logo, but it was just taking forever
to load. Yeah, it looks like the rest of them have logos in title sponsor. So I'm wondering,
I was very interesting. I wish I could see, I wish I could see the open at Austin without, like,
two weeks ago to see what the heck that logo was. You'd have to see if there was ever, like,
when they first sent out, I think when they first sent out, like, the schedule announcement email,
though, like, it's just a link. I don't think they had all the graphics in there. We need to go
into one of those, like, internet time capsule things and go back, but I didn't think about that,
until you mentioned it. But anyway, super exciting regardless of whether this was a last-minute
thing or if they've had this in the works for, for months, but hopefully to sign of things to come.
Let's get into the meat of the matter here. We've got to do our pick them
for the big, easy open coming up this week. We're down by 23, is that right?
We're down by a lot, I think, to tour life. And we're going to hopefully get it back here.
So basically, Edwin Stats, we aren't going to be able to put this on the screen because
Silas is not obviously producing this show. But Edwin has reworked all of the player values.
So we now have Ganon in the top tier. Really the big, I'll just highlight the changes. So Kyle
Klein has moved up a tier into the $4 tier, making him harder to pick. Sullivan, Tipton and Evan
Smith have both moved up a tier into the $2 tier, making them harder to pick. Ezra Robinson
and Ezra Aitor Hold have bumped down into lower tiers, making them easier to pick. So, like I
said, not going to be able to put it on the screen, but those are those changes. And then over on
FPO, Taylor Chosek has moved up into the $2 tier, making her a little bit harder to pick.
If you never watched the preview show or never watched tour life, basically we have a $10
budget for both MPO and FPO. We have to pick three players. Every player has a dollar value.
And they have to come in the top 10 to earn us points. And we go ahead to head this year, we're
doing a draft style. So whoever we pick here, tour life can't pick tomorrow night. Now at disc
south, I got the chance to talk to Silas Schultz, who is obviously Louisiana native. He's probably the
guy with the most education about this course. And I got to pick his brain and I told him like,
hey, I'm picking your brain because I have this pick him. And I was like, who is this course favor?
Who does this thing like? And he basically was like, I have no clue. I think this is unlike
anything the tours ever seen. But as he started talking, I started to kind of pick up on a few
hints. One thing he said is that it's going to be very important that players can keep their
composure. So players who like something bad happens to them and then they can get mentally get
themselves out of it. I would stay away from no offense to this player. I love him, but I think
I'm staying away from Ganon on that. I don't know if you're on the same train. It's all going to be
there. That's valid. That's valid. Also, he was talking, it seems that a lot of the woods are like
almost unfair woods where it's like super tight fairways. When you're off the fairway, it's like
super hard to scramble. It seems like scoring is going to be non-existent. I heard from like three
different pros that they think 15 under might win this tournament. It's a three-year-old event.
That's five under around. That would be crazy. That would make this by far the hardest course on
tour, which is what Silas told me. He said, I think this is going to play harder than anything we've
ever seen. So we also have to think about who does good on a hard courses and like weird wooded
courses. This course isn't fully wooded, but obviously this isn't the full preview show, but I'm
just kind of trying to give a bunch of context before we get into picks. So with all that in mind,
I have a few thoughts. I don't know if you thought through it a bunch.
I'm glad I'm out of time. Okay. One player I was thinking of is Ezra Robinson, mainly because
when I was looking back, I was looking at two courses for my data points, which is Northwood Black
and the new new London. Because I think both of those are going to kick you in the teeth. Both of those
are going to obviously play wooded where you have to hit gaps. They're going to make you manage
the course and they're definitely going to like throw you off. So you have to get used to not
scoring as much as you're used to. So I feel like both of those are good comps from that,
not necessarily. I mean, they're also long and this course is like 12,000 feet. This course is
so freaking long. So Ezra played very solid at new new London and at Northwood.
Problem with that. This would be our second time picking him. You can only pick a player eight
times this year. So I don't know if we want to use him twice this early or not.
I mean, it may slid him down a tier. So it honestly, it gets more tempting and realistically,
I think he is not a player that I would say checks out after an initial bad round. So I like that.
And also, like, I don't think he's a player. We're going to have to feel like we have to spam
every week. But him being in the $2 tier, like, if we're staying away from Ganon,
like, I think he's a no brainer, honestly, in the $2 tier.
Yeah, I like him there. The only other player I kind of like in the $2 tier is Chris Dickerson.
My logic there was I feel like if there's anyone on tour that has experience with the kind of
local courses that are hard just to be hard, which is kind of the vibe I was getting from players.
It's like, this is the pro tour version of that where it's like, yeah, there's not really a gap.
Yeah, there's not really a landing zone. You just kind of chuck a disc up there. And like,
that's where Dickerson literally survived off of in North Carolina in Tennessee Woods for years.
So maybe a bad line of thought there. He also has played very good in Northwood and New London
over the past. So I don't hate Dickerson there either in that $2 tier. But I do think we go two
from the $2 from the $4 tier and then one of those two in the $2 tier. It's kind of where I'm thinking.
Yeah. Yeah, I'm kind of leaning like this is where I'm out of the top of my head as I'm looking at like
some two out of the three of
Rick Calvin Kyle and then Ezra. That's kind of where I'm at. Yeah. So the two players I had from
the $4 tier were Calvin Heimberg and Kyle Klein. Because another thing I kept picking up from
the undertones of players is apparently there's a lot of low ceiling shots. And for whatever reason,
whenever I hear low ceiling shots, I think of Calvin. I don't know if that's I showed or not,
but I always do. And so I like Calvin because there's also a lot of distance and low ceiling. So I
feel like that works well. And then Kyle Sneaky has played very good again at Northwood and
New London, the new new London. And he just had a good weekend at Olympus. So it's funny,
he has a lot of times you think of Kyle as like talking to himself when he messes up. So you
think like mental fortitude's not his forte. But apparently it is because these really hard
courses. He doesn't get super like washed out of events. Like him, Kyle and Ezra or him, Calvin and
Ezra, I feel like that's three guys who like consistently can climb back into tournaments to take
like fifth place when they were way down the leaderboard. And like I think that's what you might need at
this event. Where there are others that just will not do big leaderboard climbs like that. And so
I yeah, I like that three. I think that's like an off brand unassuming three from us. And that's
I think what we need now. This is going to be when they this is going to be when we leave like the
wide open like stock like they're just going to take a B Rick and like Simon and all three of them
are going to podium. They would wouldn't they. FPO is going to be just tricky. I don't really know
what to think about it. Because really the $7 tier I don't like Holland. I don't hate the idea of
Missy in a $7 tier. But obviously then we have to go to one and the $1 tier like half the FPO
feels apparently skipping this event. Edwin said like basically the $1 tier he was like I'm not
even going to fill it with pictures. You're just going to have to scroll because I'd have to bring
in so many new people because so many people aren't here. So I'm almost thinking we go.
We just I'm throwing this off the dome. But own scoggins Valerie Mandihano from the two $4 tiers.
And then we take like a I mean the $2 tier. I don't I don't think I like Taylor in the woods.
Maybe Ellie Ezra. What did she do? Was she good at Olympus or no?
Last week. Ellie Ezra. She's in the $2 tier on her. Hey what?
Yeah so it's Taylor Chosek who was one last week. But we're going into a super tight wouldsy.
Do you think that matters or no? Do you think just Sintaylor?
I got to be honest with you like I think any one of these FPO players could absolutely
bomb at like they could stink at this course. But I like if I'm I think if you're taking a shot in
that $2 tier like none of them have a chance of winning this tournament except for Taylor Chosek
because of last week. So we're going own scoggins Val Mandihano and Taylor Chosek.
Do we like that? Or do we like that? Two safe plays in an aggressive.
Okay I'm okay with Val that seems on brand for Val to win like and like kind of unexpected random one.
I would agree when I was looking at like this is going to be a random wouldsy type course. I was
like you know this could be the one that Val Mandihano gets gets going on. So okay I will submit

Trevor's trivia right after these messages all right trivia time
we're going to be talking a little bit old school disc golf today you know we're all
infactuated with the disc golf pro tour but some of you might know about a little something called
the disc golf world tour it existed for two seasons 2016 2017 it was kind of the brainchild
of UC Marisma and to this day I mean the idea was to basically create a tour that kind of
encompassed events that already exists but also additive you in and it was like supposed to it
was supposed to have stops in different places in the world and they were standing and it was
like kind of cool but in any case over those two seasons there were some repeat events but there
were seven different events that occurred over those two seasons so I'm going to see how many
of those hunter can guess because this is kind of right in our sweet spot to when we were really
into disc golf so and hunters even been to one of these seven different ones is in like they
don't exist anymore or like no no like between the two seasons there were seven different events
even though some of them repeated um oh oh understood so some can repeat some were like just too
yes oh okay thank goodness I thought you meant like they only happened one of the two years
and I was like how good do you think I am well it started with the La Marada open I remember that
we had the Aussie open was a part of it I know that um we had the Kono Piste open
I think the European open was a part of it um yep to be honest with you I think USDGC was the finale
correct if I'm not mistaken so there's five um so I need to get the last two here um oh I'm
my bad there was only six so you don't need one more only one um okay this is probably
a Europe one it's got to be a Europe one give me the Scandinavian open not the Scandinavian open
there is some pretty electric coverage of this event in particular it took place in Sweden
was not the Swedish open was European master and it has yep there you go European masters
boom not too shabby yeah this guy still knows the world tour there you have it's funny the the
disc golf world tour was announced at USDGC in 2015 during Paul McBeth's ring ceremony and they
had him up there um or no he had a one yet he had a one USDGC yet it was during the ring ceremony
and then they brought Paul up and they had a like curtain thing over the disc golf world tour logo
and like you see announced it in Paul was the one like pulled it off because it was started at
La Marada which was like close to Paul's home in Huntington Beach um and yeah I went to the Aussie
open in 2017 because the tour started in 2016 the same year as the pro tour funny enough
went to the Aussie open in 2017 I got a due to peril disc golf world tour hat that I still have
hanging on my shelf back at home I need to break that out more you lecture um yeah you sure
don't know about if you don't know about due to peril uh you're you're missing out but okay

an interesting one that came out uh I saw this on disc golf fanatics post uh who he just runs a
a facebook page if you don't know who he is um and he came out where he had a screenshot from
teamo newtonin who is the owner of clash discs who made a post who kind of dispelled a rumours if
you will it's been going around because I don't know if we were a part of spreading them but I
definitely heard them and I might have repeated them at some point that clash disc was essentially
done with disc golf because there hasn't been new clash discs in a while they like really ramped
up production of how many mold they released how fast they released them and it's been hard
to find clash discs on the shelves so teamo teamo came out with um this post he said in recent weeks
there have been rumours circulating and clash discs has been shut down and the operations have
ended I want to address the situation directly and openly clash has not shut down disc golf disc
sales in general are currently at an unusually low level and the market is still adjusting after a
surge in demand and supply during the pandemic years and this situation has been response it has
been resp- in this situation it has been responsible to adapt our operations to the reality of the
current market clash will therefore continue operating but product development is
temporarily on hold however our focus is strongly on the future we are currently building a strategy
towards the 2027 season when we believe the market situation will have normalized our goals to
bring something new to the market of that season until then we will continue selling our current
lineup as usual during 2025 and 2026 I personally also have other projects but clash has not been
forgotten there is still a lot happening beneath the surface and even though things might look
quieter externally work continues towards the future I believe brighter years lie ahead for clash
for the industry as a whole disc golf is a passion driven sport and manufacturing discs is a
passion driven business thank you to everyone who follows ask questions and cares so thoughts on
that well yeah I mean I'm glad to hear it I thought clash was a really cool company there's not a
lot of there's really not as many disc golf companies these days with their own prairie proprietary
molding and manufacturing and so I think that they've always been a cool company I've always liked
that you know they are innovators you know they're like tone plastic was innovative and they had
some really cool stuff going I think they were you know they obviously hit disc golf at the right
time and I wasn't surprised like when people were spreading that around you know that they were
shutting down because they had other ventures like that didn't really shock me but I think it makes
sense you know if they already have kind of their setup it makes sense for them to just keep producing
just the stuff they have and selling it as it goes but disc golf is an interesting sport like right
now where it's super super competitive among the retailers if you don't have like crazy good
footing and I don't think clash quite yet had built that crazy good footing because you know they
had toyed around with sponsoring players like partial bags and stuff but you don't you probably
don't have enough people that are like die hard clash people to keep your brand relevant when there's
like 10 new ones every other day trying to grab that market share so I do think when they come back
in like if they take a year off and they come back in like their product is good so like at the
end of the day people like it would draw my interest back and I hope that they continue to kind of
like innovate and make some new exciting things but yeah I'm excited that they're still sticking
around because I always thought they had good stuff it's just yeah never quite
caught on hard enough for like that's kind of how it was a little too easy for us to notice
that they had things that got a little quiet because you don't see people throwing clash like for
while it was a little bit of the talk of the town but it faded a little bit more like a trend
than a longtime player yeah it is interesting just hearing him kind of talk through it
because I feel like the I feel like the retailers at least and maybe we're just different but I feel
like from the retail side and then talking to manufacturers it's almost like we're seeing two
different sports because I almost feel like the retailers are the one that got hit first when
the everything slowed down and then we're also the ones that are getting hitting hit first when
everything's picking back up so it's almost like it's a delayed reaction to the manufacturers because
everything slowed down obviously it's going to take us as retailers a while for our purchasing
too slow right because you still have the stuff on your shelf and stuff like that it's people
aren't buying direct from the manufacturers as much to buying direct from retailers so there's
a middleman there and then the same thing when it's picking back up but we still have stock so that's
starting to sell again and so it's a delayed reaction to the manufacturers as far as retailers buying
them again and I think clash mainly if I'm not mistaken I think clash mainly distributes
through retail partner in the US and that retail partner is also a retailer and so if they just
had huge amounts of clash inventory their sales actually might have picked back up well in advance
because now they have two middlemen because they have us and all the other like normal retailers
ordering from this bigger retailer that's a distribution partner and then they have to order
from clash so our sales have to pick up to this one dwindle their stock before they so it's almost
like a delayed chain reaction to clash because I think that a lot of stuff you say I'm like brother
that's like two years ago that what you're talking about and like the market has normalized and
started to grow I've talked to a bunch of different manufacturers obviously I'm not going to like
spoil who they are but like a lot of manufacturers this weekend at disc south and even ones that you
would have thought we're going to be doom and gloom we're like hey things are stabilizing things
are normalizing and we're actually starting to trend back upwards and again I think that that's
what we already saw and we were on the side of like why is everyone still freaking out but we're the
front lines we have media and retail so we're the ones that are going to see that brought first and
it's gonna take a while to get back to the manufacturers and so I did I didn't think it was interesting
here and talk about that I also think it's interesting that they're like we have stuff in the works
we're just planning it for 2027 so it's basically like they're going to be starting over
there's obviously going to be people that are like excited like hey clash is back but it is
weird of you just whatever market share you did have you're going to just kind of abandon
to a certain extent and then try to regain it back in 2027 I mean it sounded like they're still
going to have their stock stuff but I don't know it's an interesting play to just be like hey 2026
expect nothing new from us 2027 you'll see something I don't know it's weird to me
yeah and they always like they were always an interesting company too because like they were
not super easy to be in contact with like we tried to do some like collaborate in certain ways
and it wasn't super easy to do so and so I think they left some opportunity on the table and then
you know they ran advertising on the pro tour which is not inexpensive and it was honestly kind of
higher production compared to what a lot of companies do as well their commercials weren't bad at
all so it's like I think they're operating as I still like whether regardless of what they say
like I think there's a little bit of corporate jargon going on and honestly I wouldn't be surprised
as disc golf wasn't like yeah sure I believe in the sense that maybe it wasn't dead but it might
have been more on the back burner until all of a sudden they start hearing their name in the
in the news a little bit and being like oh people are still talking about this golf thing I guess
maybe we do need to like bring that back like you know it's it's it's tough to say because it's not
like it's that difficult for them to be like oh people are chatting about us let's run a few more
this with these molds we already have it's not you know impossible to do that
yeah no that it's definitely an interesting one but I'm excited they're coming back in some
way shape or form because they they had some very interesting stuff like the steady ring stuff
which is like their halo but it was like multiple layers I think that's pretty interesting and then
obviously like Trevor was talking about earlier the tone plastic was was very unique in the sense
that it had the like two different plastic we've actually seen more companies starting to do
stuff similar with project grip and I know I know it's not exactly similar but as far as like the
ram feels different than the flight plate and stuff like that like we've seen companies start
to do stuff similar but clash was kind of the first to step into that with the tone plastic so
I'm excited that the company that's doing those things like the steady ring and tone are hopefully
you know going to be doing some more innovative stuff so speaking of innovation we've got innovation
that might be good might be bad um coming to the big easy open uh which is the tea pads I wish I
could share my screen um I just without Silas I can't show you these so if you're interested in
what I'm about to talk about and this sounds absolutely ludicrous to you please just google big easy
open tea pads and you'll find them um you might be like oh I accidentally pulled up a landing
strip at an airport by accident nope you're looking at the right thing uh so this is from John
Howe who designed the course here job very famous disc golf designer um so he created these
tea pads and he's actually branded them so HD 007 is the bigger one which stands for Howe
Design 007 um and these things are interesting so the idea behind them I actually kind of like
which is basically it's to help kind of the erosion around the tea pad it we can probably all
think of a tea pad our local course that the tea pads not as long for a run up as you would like
so everyone starts off the back corner and then runs onto the tea pad and yet and seen it yet
no oh no uh so the idea behind it is like we probably all have that tea pad right where you have
the tea pad and then you walk off the back corner and everyone starts on the same and so it starts
to a road away off the tea pad and so he's basically like well the back is where we need it the
widest so it's a really wide back and then gets more narrow towards the front and then also has
more concrete off the front where when you follow through your foot hit so it's protecting
everything around it to help reduce erosion what makes it ridiculous is he painted I say he
they painted the tea pad area in the middle good but then they approach they painted all these
approach lines on it like 75 degrees 60 degree how many like inches or feet or whatever's in between
the 90 and it just looks it looks silly like if I'm just being completely honest with you uh the
all the approach lines that they're reasoning behind it was to kind of help players help fans and
help the broadcast I didn't really know I needed to know a player's approach angle on the broadcast
but hey I guarantee you we're going to hear it at least once or twice now that they have this in
their back pocket so now that you've seen it travel your thoughts yeah I mean it's it's a little
absurd yeah they approach lines I can't wait to hear one of the three nates reference those like as
if they've been talking about it their whole lives uh but the thing is I could see people getting
worked up about the tea pad things because like there's this question of like like okay how big is
too big of a tea pad and clearly these guys were like nothing like we're going to the moon here
it looks like it could go to the moon uh but what I will say is the the problem is and and with the uh
with these expanded tea pads you still have to throw from within the red area yes okay so with
that being said because that is still standardized you're allowed as a player to run up
100 feet away from the tea pad if you want it to as long as you end up on it so I think
whatever you want behind and like kind of to the sides the tea pad is totally fair game it's
it's up to how you want to design the course um and at the end of the day it's really not give it
like yes it gains all the players an advantage but it's not an advantage over the rules of the
pdga because they still are just going to have to lay end up landing in the designated throwing
area before they like release because it'd be one thing if we were seeing tea pads
that were like legitimately cheating the rule and it's like the guys are getting throws off from
like five feet left of where they should be able to and then then we have a problem because
things are getting cheated in that regard but yeah I think I think the look is a little silly um
I mean it looks like you could play a game of three on three on that first tea pad and you
obviously you have the lines as well so you might even go to uh to establish where the paint is
but I don't know I listen innovation in disc golf I'm a huge fan of it I'm a huge fan of people
just trying stuff I think that the lines are goofy I think the big tea pads look a little absurd but
the players are probably going to think it rocks and you know it is it is what it is like it's not
it's not gonna it's not gonna hurt anything in my opinion so I'm like let's let's innovate things
as much as possible change things up as long as it's not like sacrificing the integrity of the sport
and I don't think that this isn't anyway and frankly apparently this course is super long and
impossible so maybe a little help uh we much appreciate it yeah I think that like I said I like the
idea of it right uh because it's protecting the course from the erosion and stuff like that it's
giving players more spot to run up on um I showed this to Brodie yesterday and he immediately was
like why didn't they just make the outside one color and the inside leave is concrete so it's
just like black and white because it is gonna be a little confusing on the broadcast I think because
we never see this of just like there's so many lines that someone who just comes in and doesn't
really know what's going on might just be like why are they all throwing from right there when
they can throw from anywhere uh versus like if the whole outside was just like stained red and then
the actual tea pad part in the middle was just normal concrete it would do the exact same thing
functionality wise but provide a clear message of like you can't go in here you throw from here um
yeah I don't know I think the lines is all the lines are all I don't like the tea pad it is what
is like it's kind of cool uh it it who cares uh the lot the approach lines are just like all right
what what are we doing it is one of those things that's going to be interesting to watch with like
this is a you know course that obviously a lot of time and money was put into and we've seen
this in small ways with other privately owned courses where you have disc golf which at its core
is a very inexpensive course to put in because the baskets and tea pads and signage is really all
you need beyond transforming the land that's where a lot of the labor actually comes in and so I think
these guys get bored because like if I were legitimately wealthy like if I had I could put in
golf course money but I want to do disc golf like there's only so much you can do and you're
just sitting there and you're like well what have we made the tea pads like three times the concrete
because we only need 18 of them like it's not that big of a deal so like I feel like the more we see
privately owned disc golf courses with a lot of equity thrown at it you're going to start to see more
and more stuff that's like absurd like oh why don't we make our baskets even more chains and you know
this and that so I mean heck I want to see a first tea pad that's an LED screen I mean come on
might as well I'll probably happen to European disc golf festival what is interesting is this
course is a park course but the parks and rec department from what I understand is like basically
giving free reign to them like I I was talking again to Silas and he was telling me about like
some of the things that are going on out here that the parks department it's something
the most supportive parks department I've ever heard of I mean I legitimately if I understood
the story right they wanted a pond in for a water feature on one of the holes and it got put in
the wrong place and they came out of like oh crap this is the wrong and they moved the pond
they just filled part of it and then dug it and they moved upon for it like if that's crazy so to
see something like this yeah like to your point it's probably just like hey we almost have the
infinite money glitch right here what are we gonna do with it it's like well what if we made
the tea pads a hundred feet wide you know like it it is probably like that but what's what does
nothing that's interesting to me is I thought the pro tour standardized the like turf tees
or these are moving towards it so it's interesting to get to this tournament a new one on tour and
to see it not only not be the like standard turf but actually be like a whole another new thing
that's concrete that's weird to me too yeah why I didn't know like they've been using that
exact same brand yeah and I thought that maybe there was a partnership there that just isn't in
place at this current time like I don't know what the deal was I mean I think that
part of what makes that like the turf standard thing important is that it creates a
very usable acceptable playing field no matter where they go whereas like if you have brand new
nice concrete tees at a course like this I mean everybody's gonna probably agree that that's okay but
I'd be interested to hear if like there's that players out there that really dislike the concrete
and like the turf if they're like hey this is kind of ridiculous like we play all year long
on turf this is what we're used to and then it's like tennis man you got majors on different surfaces
what are we doing yeah I just remember that was a thing when it might even when worlds was coming
um it was a really big deal about the turf because I remember I went out to I was on the phone
with high-enold at some point because I went out to check on the turf installation and I was like
I don't understand what's wrong with this turf like but it's not working right and I discovered
that it was installed backwards and so they had like flip it around but the whole point of that
turf was like this is kind of the protor standard turf and even the guy who like owned that
company like was sending us samples of the turf and it was like this is the protor standard turf
and it seemed like everything was going that way so that yeah there you go so that's what surprised
me when I saw this concrete was I was like I thought we kind of all agreed on and like started to
standardize this for the protor um I agree I don't think that this year it's gonna be a big deal
because brand new concrete it's my favorite to play on I like concrete more than turf um but
you do hear a lot more complaints from pros about concrete a lot of it actually comes to the shoe
durability they just say like they if they're playing on concrete all the time they just fly through
shoes because it just eats it up the pivoting on that rough concrete but it also does come from
like wearing down you have these slick spots that form on the tee pad where it's just like everyone
pivots on the same spot and it wears down that spot and then it if it's a little wet it just
becomes super slick so I don't think it's gonna be an issue this year but if this is the tournament
it's on the tour every year for an extended time like that could become an issue at some point
and it doesn't look like this would be easy to just replace the turf tee pad we had to basically
get a whole high school field for like two t's huh yeah yeah that would be it'd be a lot of turf
that is for sure all right well that wraps up all the topics for today's episode probably after
the big easy open this weekend we can kind of get into our power rankings a little bit more once
we have two tournaments under our belt because I saw where the pro tour put out their standings
and I'm like there's no point in highlighting the standings week one is you just use post of
the Supreme Fight open leaderboard um but after week two we can kind of start looking at some power
ranking see who's starting the season well uh the preview show this week Trevor is running it by
himself is that correct yep yep so solo dolo trev on the big easy open preview show coming a little
bit later this week once Trevor has some more knowledge about the course I'm hoping some practice
rounds start to come out so then instead of it just being a bunch of speculation because with discs
south it was actually super interesting there's so many pros here and I was talking to all of them
like hey what do you what do you think of this new new course coming up what do you think and all
of them were just like I know nothing about it I have no clue yeah uh one of them who switched to a
new manufacturer I was talking to um was like dude I'm I'm gonna be locked in my games feeling good
all that was like well are you just a new dish yet and they're like no no no but I'll get there
and I was like you realize a tournament starts in like four days and they're like oh yeah maybe
don't pick me this week maybe wait a few weeks and I was like yeah okay if you I don't think people
realize like oh I'm leaving Dallas Sunday and I got a tee off on like Friday like I got like a few
days to learn what is apparently the hardest course of wherever gonna play so it's gonna be an
interesting one and I don't think any pros are really there very few because a lot of guys are
playing the throw down the mountain down in Florida still see it people in Florida you had people
in Dallas so it might just be bless you the players who actually are there right now on Sunday
Monday Tuesday are the ones with the biggest advantage it could be very interesting but hopefully
practice on start coming out and we can start learning a little bit more about this course before
the preview show so tune into that that'll come out on Thursday and then we'll be back in studio
next Monday to recap everything that went down with the big easy open we'll talk you then
