What's going on, everyone?
Welcome into another episode of The Checo Daily, Andrew DeCheco, Eagles Beat reporter
for InsideTheBirds.com.
Make sure you check out the recent interview that I conducted with former Vanderbilt,
Titan, and 2025 John Mackey Award winner Eli Stowers.
We had a great conversation and he even revealed something that really resonated with me.
You can see by my expression on the screen there.
But those of you who know me know that I'm a big music aficionado and as evidenced by
me wearing a Skid Row shirt Thursday on the air.
But a lot of really good stuff there from Eli.
We talked about pretty much everything from Eagles related to going from quarterback to
Titan and I think that he, you will really enjoy that interview so make sure you check
that out.
It'll be available beginning on Saturday and we'll have some really cool NFL draft stuff
coming your way from myself, from Jeff, from Adam, of course Greg Cosell.
Make sure you stay plugged in to what we have going on.
But I want to do, I want to begin a series where I go position by position in no particular
order where I sort of rate it the same, better or worse.
And today I decided I'm going to go with Wyve receiver and I will wait till the end
after assessing every position and comparing it to the previous year before I reach a conclusion.
But right now AJ Brown is on the roster so I'm adding him into this equation.
I'm not going to do hypotheticals.
We'll have plenty of time to worry about that down the line.
But AJ Brown Devante Smith, nothing's changed.
Johan Dotson is a good wide receiver but he didn't really add another element to this
Eagles offense and wasn't overly productive, didn't get a ton of opportunities but wasn't
overly productive.
37 catches over two seasons and never had one of those go-to traits that added something
different to the offense.
Whereas I look at Hollywood Brown who I'm presuming will be the third receiver, barring something
that transpires over the next month and maybe in the draft.
But Hollywood Brown is a better fit for this offense meaning he provides a different element
a different dimension that it was so sorely lacking and that is someone who can take
the top off of a defense.
He can clear out space for teammates.
I think he at different points in his career kind of showed he exhibited glimpses of the
player that he could be.
He was a former first round pick.
You see the talent but it wasn't something that was consistent enough and that's why he's
bounced around a little bit.
And in Philadelphia I think he would have a clear cut to find role as the three and that
speed that he hasn't really had much of a chance to uncork in his career.
If you look at his yards per reception, it's strikingly low considering how explosive
and dynamic of a talent he is.
I think in Philadelphia playing with a quarterback like Jay Wenherds who throws an exceptional
deep ball.
That's probably his go-to, his bread and butter.
I think Hollywood Brown would serve this offense well and for that reason I think that that
is an upgrade but then you get to the fourth receiver spot.
Now last season they didn't have Johnny Wilson.
They relied on Darius Cooper.
Darius Cooper is back and presumably in that fourth role again he's been a good story
development.
He can play on special teams.
He's tough.
In the push play he was one of the pushers or one of the protectors on the ends I should
say.
And I think that he really carved out a role as someone who was willing to do with dirty
work.
He got better.
Every training camp practice he was consistent and you could clearly see that the team
is high on him.
I think he's probably going to slide in as the four this year, help on special teams, have
a defined game day role.
And so that's sort of a wash, he'll be the four.
He had nine receptions last year I should also add.
I don't know if he'll have more than that maybe 12 or so but there's only so many opportunities
in this offense and a low volume passing attack but I think for a fourth wide receiver
Darius Cooper is I think he's going to really thrive in that role.
And so that's the same fifth receiver.
Well, I'm going to just say we'll say Johnny Wilson right now because Johnny Wilson has
been around.
He provides a certain quality that you're not going to find amongst any of the other players
at that position.
And he's in meaning that he can block.
He can do a lot of different things to free up teammates.
He can get physical in the run game.
He just brings a toughness and a frame that is really hard to come by.
And you can see last season that the Eagles sorely missed Johnny Wilson and his blocking
ability.
He can also help on special teams but because he's so uniquely built at six six and he's
coming off an injury.
So you have to see how he returns from the knee and ankle injury but I think that because
he's such a unique player and he's been in the building for a couple of years, I would
tend to lean into him being there.
I like that.
Last season they had Britten Covey, they had Xavier Gibson and neither player was really
able to help them offensively.
Britten Covey could still be around in 2026 as the pump returner but he would be a
little bit further down in the pecking order.
One would assume and Xavier Gibson was always here for a few games active and fumbled
away a pretty critical punts or he fielded it, he fielded it first in the Dallas game which
is a no-no and he's now on the New York Giants so I'm glad to see him get another opportunity,
really good guy but he didn't really factor in his receiver two reception six yards and
was never really a factor in that area.
But I would also say that this year they added Elijah Moore and Elijah Moore carried
some intrigue and I spoke about Elijah yesterday on the podcast.
Talent wise you could certainly make a case for him being the fourth receiver but from
a practicality standpoint as your fourth receiver who doesn't play special teams, Darius
Cooper does, Johnny Wilson does, Britten Covey does and if you're up on game day as the
fourth receiver you're not going to see a ton of snaps at wide receiver in all likelihood
so that means that you have to be able to serve a purpose on special teams and we have
you have to see if you can do that.
This isn't to say who's going to make the roster or not I'm just trying to add a little
bit of context here as I'm viewing it as I'm talking through this but I think you feel
good about the depth that they've added and how he would brown and Elijah Moore you
get Johnny Wilson back we'll see in what what version of Johnny Wilson you're going to
get the healthy 2024 version or someone who's maybe impeded by injuries depending on how
he recovered from that but on the surface I think that that is an upgrade to add him
into the mix and you could still draft the wide receiver so everything the Eagles potentially
could want from that position is right in front of them if they want to add to that group
they're going to have some opportunities at 54 where I think there's an abundance of
players you can even be aggressive and trade up in the second round because there's some
players that I really like maybe Alabama's Jeremy Bernard who could be a good fit there
and you're going to get younger there and you're going to get more explosive and dynamic
if you take a receiver in the first or the second round I think the second round might
be the sweet spot but you add a player like that into the fold and again I'm still counting
AJ Brown this equation until he's not here but I will say you have AJ Brown the Vante Smith
let's say you have a rookie then you have Hollywood Brown you have Elijah Moore you have
Johnny Wilson you have Darius Cooper you have other players who are a little bit further
down in the pecking order like a Danny Gray and a Quas Watkins and a Covey but I think
the Eagles what they've done a good job of right now because I didn't think last season
they had much depth at all a wide receiver they've added experience and varying skill sets
and I think they could still add to that group so I'm going to say right now definitively
without having seen any of these players take a snap except for those who were on the
2025 and be an earlier Eagles without seeing how Hollywood Brown or how Elijah Moore fits
or Johnny Wilson returns on paper I will say that the 2026 group has shaped up to be better
than the 2025 group and I thought that the 2025 receiving core left something to be desired
they were just missing something they didn't have the explosive game breaker they didn't
have like beyond AJ and the Vante they didn't have a lot of a lot of versatility in terms
of skill set and I think there were times last season where the lack of depth was evident
and it doesn't seem like the Eagles are positioned to make those same mistakes again they've sort
of draft proof the roster so they can go into it not having a dire need at any one area
well you can look at safety or edge but there's still time but looking at it purely through
the lens of the wide receiver position they've they've draft proof that so that they can go
into it without having to feel compelled to draft a receiver in the first round because of
an apparent need right I mean I think that's the whole that's the whole purpose of for agency
is to supplement your roster and add pieces here and there so that you go into the draft not
needing not having ten you know distinct holes that need addressing that's not a good that's
a tough way to live and when you add someone like like the two veteran wide receivers that I
mentioned a couple times now that really it arms you with optionality in the draft hey if you're
like me you're desensitized to the dozens of notifications on your phone every day but if that
latest ping is from your security camera ignoring it could spell disaster picture this someone's
breaking into your home but you're giving a huge presentation at work or you're at the movies
or you're 30,000 feet in the sky on a flight you'll see the footage in a couple hours but by then
it's too late that's why I choose simply safe simply safe is a customizable whole home security

community with specials for fans students service members and health care pros Camden apothecary
top quality cannabis great prices and an experience made for Philly fans 21 and up I do think that
if they want to go receiver in the first round you have Omar Cooper kc conception down there
he's going to have to clean up his drops but an explosive player really good in space like Cooper
could be a manufactured touch guy but I think the sweet spot would be at 54 if you want to go
receiver because Chris Brazil the second from Tennessee I've mentioned I've mentioned Jeremy
Bernard there's other players that I haven't that I've talked about but those are the two that I
think would make the the biggest impact and would could realistically be there at 54 and the
Eagles are going to have a chance to take one of those players you bring that into the fold
potentially with what you already have and I think it's head and shoulders
better than the group that they rolled out last season and that's not a slight to anyone
but it's the way that I view it right now because I just think that they have a lot more optionality
they have a lot more a lot more playmakers to to furnish that group whereas last season I thought
it was kind of bare bones so that's the way I see it will go into another position at you know
the next time we speak but again make sure you check out that Eli Stowers interview I think you'll
enjoy it and you can grab that beginning on Saturday let me know what you think and that's that's
