What are the keys to the Yukon men regaining the success they've had throughout the season?
0:46
I've got the formula, this is Lockdown, Yukon!
0:56
You are a Lockdown Yukon, your daily podcast on the Yukon Huskies, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day.
1:08
Happy Wednesday, I'm Matt Shonvysky, on today's show I'm going to focus on the three things
1:15
Yukon needs to get right, this NCA tournament run.
1:19
We'll close the show, shooting, no secret, Alice Keribin, Solo Ball,
1:26
Berlin Mullins, they all need to be better from the outside.
1:30
We'll talk about that and we'll close the show with that segment.
1:33
In the middle of today's episode, we're talking about Silas Demory Jr.
1:36
His health, and then if he is truly healthy like all indications show,
1:41
limiting turnovers will be key.
1:43
But we'll open today's show, talk about Terrace Reed, who is the difference maker?
1:48
Who will be the difference maker?
1:52
All you need to look at, compare St. John's in Hartford versus St. John's at the Biggest Tournament Final.
2:00
What they get from Terrace Reed is going to dictate how successful this tournament run is for the Yukon Huskies.
2:09
Will they get back to a regional final?
2:12
Will they get back to competing for a final four?
2:15
Or will the inconsistencies show through
2:21
and will this team bow out before I think anybody halfway through the season would have expected?
2:28
The biggest thing to me, the biggest thing that even Dan Hurley talked about is Terrace Reed.
2:36
Dan Hurley is not looking for Terrace Reed to be out here doing and being the key melage
2:42
one on the baseline with fadeaway jumpers, anything like that.
2:48
He needs to be the Terrace Reed that Dan Hurley and this team know that he can be,
2:54
the one that dominated in Hartford, the one that since the one rebound performance
3:01
has really excelled more often than not, but it's the consistency that this Yukon team needs,
3:08
the consistency to protect the rim, the consistency to play good defense,
3:14
the consistency to be a good player down in the block, and it's not.
3:19
You don't need to go for 25 and 10, 25 and 18, 25 and 8.
3:26
You just need to be consistent with your play, consistent with your play.
3:33
You don't need to finish everything around the rim, but just be that low pose presence
3:38
that this team can rely upon, possession after possession after possession.
3:44
In that mindset, we talked about the mindset with Terrace Reed.
3:47
We talked about the want to with Terrace Reed.
3:50
Being a beast on the board is all about your heart, your desire, your want to,
4:00
to have this season and the way you wanted to.
4:05
Your pursuit of excellence, your effort and your heart and your dedication
4:10
will dictate where you go in this team and all depends on Terrace Reed.
4:18
Because if you get the Terrace Reed that showed up against St. John's in the biggest title game,
4:23
this team will not be cutting down any nets whether regional final or national title.
4:32
If this team gets the Terrace Reed in Hartford against St. John's,
4:38
the absolute beast who dominated.
4:42
Even the player from the Big East quarters,
4:48
or the Big East semis will suffice.
4:53
He was such an impact in those games,
4:57
distributing the ball,
5:01
getting guys open, allowing guys to run into open spaces like Alex Caravan and dumping it
5:06
down for easy layups, attracting defenders, finding the open man,
5:13
just doing what we know that Terrace Reed is capable of.
5:22
And it's not asking for something that we know is not achievable.
5:30
Dan Hurley and this coaching staff, these players, Terrace Reed himself.
5:35
He understands. He knows. He's seen it on film.
5:38
Non-stop. Dan Hurley has let him know.
5:43
Be a beast on the glass as they know that he can be.
5:50
What's that? Getting in position, boxing out, holding your man back,
5:57
fighting for that position. Is it effort thing?
6:00
And grabbing the ball off the boards.
6:06
Simple. Second thing. Protect the rim. We've seen him.
6:13
Big East quarters, or Big East semis. What was it? Semis?
6:19
The title of my video was Read Jacked, because he was aggressively defending the rim.
6:27
And making plays around the rim that, this version of Terrace Reed, aggressiveness,
6:35
fight, desire, taking that aggression out on the ball.
6:44
Three of those blocks were spectacular. Exactly what Dan Hurley and this team are looking for,
6:52
protecting the rim. There's been times as well where he's dove on the floor.
6:58
The heart, the desire that Terrace Reed has shown. It's there. It's inside him. We know it.
7:06
And we talked about leaning throughout this Big East tournament.
7:10
How Dan Hurley is even publicly with Terrace Reed sitting right next to him at the podium.
7:14
Talking about Terrace Reed's the guy. He's the difference between us going to the final four
7:18
and us not going to the final four. And talking him up that, hey, Terrace, you can be the best
7:25
center in the nation. Bar none. Getting that out of Terrace. I know it's something that Dan Hurley's
7:33
trying to do. He's trying to pull it out of Terrace Reed. If he could be successful to do that,
7:42
to get the most out of Terrace Reed, because as a coach, that's one of your biggest things
7:46
in roles and responsibilities, right? Get the most out of your players. Build them up to something that
7:53
you know they're capable of doing. Not asking them to do something above and beyond what they're
7:58
capable of. With Terrace Reed, he's got all the physical tools. He's got everything to make him one
8:05
of the best centers in the nation. The consistency thing. Dan Hurley can help with that. And he's trying
8:12
to pull it out of him, like I said. But in the end, it's right here, right here with Terrace.
8:26
If he plays with that heart in that desire, in that aggression, and has the right mindset,
8:32
stays focused throughout the game and carries out and performs like everybody. Everybody knows
8:40
he's capable of. This team is a completely different team. This team is one that can make a run
8:47
to the regional final. Depending how things play out, matchups, even going head to head with Duke,
8:54
who may or may not be fully healthy. Yes, they did win the ACC, but you con. We've talked about it.
9:03
If they are fully healthy and by all accounts, maybe Jaylen Stewart's back. We'll talk about
9:07
Vasala's demo in the next segment. If this Yukon team is fully healthy, I still maintain
9:13
deepest team in the nation. But everything that you see here on the screen, everything that we're
9:20
talking about today needs to transpire for Yukon to perform up to their optimal level.
9:27
It starts with Terrace greed. If Yukon gets the Terrace greed,
9:40
that Dan Hurl is trying to pull out, that everybody is seeing it from Terrace greed throughout
9:45
the season at different times. This Yukon team can make a run and seriously compete for a third
9:53
national title in four seasons. Heart, mindset, and then execute on the floor.
10:10
I got a jump to a break. On the other side, we'll talk Silas Demory, his health, turnovers,
10:16
too many, lack of. That will also decide how Yukon Ferris in the NCAA tournament. We'll talk
10:24
about that on the other side.

14:28
As we kick off our second segment, we're switching gears to Silas Dimmer Jr. His health, turnovers
14:34
as well. Those two things with Silas. Just as we talked about with Terus Reed in the first segment,
14:44
those two things with Silas Dimmery are absolutely paramount. First off, it seems like by all accounts,
14:50
Dan Hurley was talking Sunday. That Silas Dimmery Jr. is doing okay with his ankle injury.
14:59
Sounds like he's going to be good to go. No injury reports obviously until before the game,
15:05
so we really will not know until game time until the ball is tipped. What is the status of Silas Dimmery?
15:16
But we talked about it already in terms of if he's not able to go, what does that do? It throws
15:21
the defense for a loop, right? Because Silas Dimmery Jr. has been the head of the snake
15:24
defensively for UConn all season long. He's the reason. Yes, other players have improved
15:31
performance defensively throughout the year. Silas Dimmery Jr. is the reason why this UConn
15:38
defense has taken such a step forward a year over a year. There's a detriment a year ago.
15:43
This season, it's to propel them back to the top 15 nationally on the defensive side.
15:51
If he's not there, yes, he is your point guard and things are impacted on offense,
15:57
but UConn can get over that with other players defensively. He's not replaceable. You can try to
16:02
replace him. I've got some ideas on how you could do that, but by all accounts, he's going to be
16:08
good to go, so we're not going to speculate on what would transpire if he's not.
16:14
So we expect Silas Dimmery Jr. to be good to go Friday night 10 p.m. and Philadelphia.
16:21
The key for him, limiting turnovers, you can't have one of these performances,
16:25
like M.S.S. Square Garden with nine turnovers. The first time they played St. John's,
16:30
you've got to take care of the basketball. You've got to take care of the basketball because you
16:35
cannot give extra possessions to opponents. You cannot give easy buckets if you turn it over
16:40
a half court. You cannot limit the amount of shots you get up. You've got to take care of the
16:45
basketball and maximize the amount of chances you have to score, especially in close games.
16:53
Turnovers are everything. The amount of points, 24, 25, the St. John's got off turnovers in the
17:02
biggest title game. It was just one after another, after another, getting out on the break.
17:09
Al Yupes, layups, dunks. If I'm Yukon and I know in that film session that Dan Hurley talked
17:18
about that was had on Sunday, I'm sure this team was embarrassed. And looking at the screen,
17:27
that's not us. This isn't us. This isn't how we played all season. Why in the biggest moments
17:32
right now? Why? When they played at Marquette for the biggest title, regular season. When they're
17:41
on the biggest stage at MSG for the biggest title, tournament against St. John's. Why are the
17:50
things that have plagued this team throughout the season and plagued as a strong word? Because this
17:55
team went 29 and 5. This team is 29 and 5. There really isn't a plague for this team in this season.
18:04
There are things that they need to improve upon, of course. But no team is perfect. Every team has
18:11
some flaws. Every team has some flaws. Michigan didn't win the big 10 title. Florida didn't win the
18:17
SEC title. Duke did win, but they're facing some injuries. Every team is going through something
18:22
at this stage of the season. Every team, no team is perfect. No team is completely optimal,
18:27
maximizing their potential. Otherwise, there'd be an undefeated team right now.
18:36
Arizona is the closest thing to it, but we've seen Yukon vs Arizona without Brella Mullins and
18:41
without Terrace Reed. And we know how Yukon performed. You take care of the little things.
18:52
That are impacting how you could be your best. For Silas,
18:57
Demories, Turnovers, Terrace Reed, as we talked about, focus, rebounding, defensive presence,
19:01
protect the rim, for Silas. And as Yukon offends his Turnovers, do not turn the ball over. Take
19:11
care of the basketball. And if you do that, you have a chance to make a run. Because your talent
19:19
will show through. Your ability will show through. Your experience will show through.
19:24
The leadership on this team will show through. The coaching in the staff will show through.
19:32
Execution on the court. It's about this right here. It's about this right here.
19:42
And take care of your responsibilities.
19:44
And if Yukon does that, you're going to be set up for success.
19:51
There's one final thing we got to talk about. It's a big one because there's been
19:56
in some inconsistencies here as we've, especially if we got into the back half of the season,
20:00
the clothes of the season, maybe not the entire back half, but the clothes of the season for
20:04
short. There's been a lot of instances where shooting from the outside especially has not been
20:09
where it needs to be.
20:14
We're going to talk about that on the other side.

22:18
Back again for this final segment on the Wednesday edition of Lockdown Yukon and
22:23
we're switching gears and talking about shooting. Outside shooting, three points shooting as the
22:29
final key of what needs to be fixed for this team to make a run in this year's NCAA tournament.
22:36
I'm going to talk about three guys, three players. We're just going to compare their regular season
22:42
shooting percentages. We're going to show and compare what they've done in February versus what
22:47
they've done in March. And I can I think you can see exactly what I'm talking about in terms of
22:53
shooting needs to improve. And if you do improve, even to your season average,
23:00
this team is going to be set up for success. And after looking at the stats, we talked about
23:05
Terrace Read already. We talked about Silas Demarine and what we need from him.
23:09
The shooting of three players. Alice Caravan, Berlin Mullins, solo ball. These are guys that on
23:16
the season, Caravan, 38.6% from three. Berlin Mullins, 34.5% from three, solo ball, 30.6% from three.
23:30
Here's what these guys did in the month of February. Solo, we talked about he's 30% from three
23:37
for the season as a whole. In the month of February, solo ball shot 35% from three.
23:42
In March, he's down to 29%. Last season, solo ball was shooting in three at a clip of 41.4%.
23:58
If he can just get back to where he was in February, 35%, don't shoot 29%, maybe 35%,
24:06
you're going to be in a much better position. But he's not,
24:08
I don't think solo ball is really the issue here because again, if you look at what he's done
24:15
during the regular season, 30% in the month of March, he's at 29%. So pretty much on par with what
24:22
you've gotten from solo ball all season. The two guys that are hugely, hugely impactful
24:33
and their performance from three in this NCAA tournament is going to
24:40
go a long way and to see success. Let's talk about Berlin Mullins, freshman season.
24:45
I don't know if it's a season length thing. I don't know if he's slowing down because it's been
24:49
a long year and the travel is catching up to him. I don't know. But on the season, Berlin Mullins
24:56
has shot 34.5% from three. In the month of February, he seemed to be excelling. He was at 39%.
25:06
In the month of March, Berlin Mullins from three has dipped to 17%.
25:13
17%. A huge drop off, a 50% drop off from where he was throughout the regular season.
25:23
If Berlin Mullins can shoot the basketball, not even up to his season average.
25:29
I'm not asking him and I don't think this team needs him to shoot the way he did in the month of
25:33
February, which was pretty much close to 40%. You just can't be at 17% from three. Bring that
25:42
up to 30%. Couple of shots not getting knocked down and games change. Runs are extended. Open looks
25:52
lead to momentum and pressure and full core pressure defense and leads to turnovers.
25:59
If Berlin Mullins can improve shooting, it will go a long way. But he's not the only one,
26:05
like I said, Alex Caribin. One of the best three point shooters on the team on the season
26:11
averaging 38.6%. In the month of February, he improved upon that season average and was shooting
26:17
40% from three. In the month of March, he's been even worse than Berlin Mullins' percentage.
26:26
Caribin shot at 15.6%. 15.6%. These are games taking into account Marquette,
26:37
and then the three biggest tournament games, including the disaster in the Big East Title game.
26:41
If this team and these players solo and really more so,
26:50
Berlin Mullins and Alex Caribin can revert back to their season average or close to their
26:57
season average, just don't be shooting in the teams from three. This team in this season will turn
27:03
on a dime. You just can't be at 17% from Berlin Mullins, a player that you expect to be able to
27:16
deliver from three, and you can't be at 15.6% as Alex Caribin has been to start the month of March.
27:26
So those are the keys. Those are the keys. Shoot the ball well from the outside.
27:34
Is Silas-Demmarie going to junior going to be healthy? And if so, if he's on the court,
27:39
take care of the basketball. And then Terrace Reed can't he be the difference. We talked
27:45
significantly about Terrace Reed and how Dan Hurley is trying to get the most out of him.
27:50
Huge factor. Silas-Demmarie, Jr. We know what he's capable of. We know how he can take over games.
27:57
Is his health going to allow him to do so? And can he remain focused and not be careless with the
28:06
basketball and not turn it over? It's not just him. It is this entire team with the focus and the
28:17
attention of detail and the ball handling. Take care of the basketball. No turnovers, no unforced
28:24
turnovers. And then from the outside, knock down the open looks. You kind of still getting open
28:33
looks. There were there was a stretch in the St. John's game. I think you kind of cut it to 10.
28:39
It got back up to nine or had cut it to seven. Excuse me. It got up to nine or ten. And then you
28:44
kind of had I want to say two or three open looks from three. One from Braille and Mullins,
28:50
one from Alex Caravan. Neither went down. You kind of had two or three offensive rebounds on
28:55
the possession. The crowd was ready to explode. You kind was about to get the momentum. But then the
29:02
shots couldn't drop. The shots couldn't drop. I know they're in the gym working. I know Braille
29:11
and Mullins and Alex Caravan are taking shots nonstop to ensure that when they get into
29:18
when it's time for their numbers to be calls. In the NCAA tournament, they are going to come through.
29:24
I expect it. The season averages do not lie. The month of March, they've taken a step back,
29:31
but it is a smaller sample size. It is four games. It just so happens that two of those games
29:38
just happen to be two of the biggest games of the year. And when you needed them the most,
29:43
Braille and Mullins and Alex Caravan did not deliver from three. Now you've had another stretch here
29:50
where you get some time off. You're the final game, one of the final games to tip on Friday.
29:55
You basically get another full week. You get six days off. Extra because it's a 10 p.m. tip.
30:03
Get the legs under them. Get the focus. Get the rest.
