In 1932, the Australian government made a decision so unbelievable it still sounds like satire today, it deployed soldiers armed with machine guns to wage war against an estimated 20,000 emus that were invading their land. 
What began as a desperate attempt to save struggling farmers during the Great Depression quickly spiraled into one of the most bizarre and embarrassing military operations in modern history.
