It's a little weird. We have the Republican National Convention at the American Airlines Center, and our station is right next to it. And so we are not, as they say, credentialed to be in the area. They need us out of there. They didn't want to be the same. They're all of us. Yeah. They didn't want to go. Oh, man, I thought they would give you the day. It's. Oh, man. OK, so let's, let's, uh, we'll do a little recap here in a second. Let's start with Ann Arbor and just kind of your thoughts

3:05on we talked about, you know, we obviously talked about what went down last week in Ann Arbor. But beyond that, what are your thoughts on the actual team of Michigan and what they showed and what potential they may have coming this weekend against a much better team? Well, I think we all anticipated they would play better than they did. The defense played fine. They were put in a bad situation three times on a short field. They held to a field goal. And then on one series, there was 30 yards of penalties, you know, between a passing or a ferncent, and they hit out bounds that led to another. So there's your 12 points for Western Michigan, who won 10 games. You don't want to take anything away from them. The problems for Michigan were on the offensive side. And that was a wolf hole after the first series. They go down the score, touchdown. And after that, they had no ability to sustain, get first downs, really do anything. And that is, I mean, to say, nicely problematic

4:05when you've got, oh, you come to the down, which I think is one of the best defenses in all of college football. So I would assume that we would see a vastly improved version of the Michigan offense. I just don't see how they can take, you know, 18 steps forward, because that's what it's going to take to move the ball. I think they're going to have to do a lot of new things and try to stay within a type of system that can be executed by the players that are on the field. And then oh, you, like I was impressed with oh, you. I know it was just you, but man, the thing you looks explosive. And I'm just a huge fan of material. And in all this talk that we've had this year about quarterbacks throughout college football, and there are a lot of them. It's a great year for quarterbacks in college football. But for whatever reason we've overlooked this kid, and you know, last year at this time after he beat Michigan, he was the front runner and the odds on favorite to win the Heisman trophy. So I'm a big fan of his and his game, and I'm excited to see him play on Saturday. So speaking of quarterbacks, Bryce Underwood,

5:08and coaches Kyle Wittenham, the new man at Michigan after all those years at Utah. Well, let's just say I'm not positive they're on the same page after tracking that story over the last 24 hours and so forth. And it's a new coach and it's a inherited quarterback who makes a ton of money. What could go wrong, Joe? Yeah, exactly. This is the tension. And by the way, anybody feels this, if they're working for someone that didn't hire them. We always talk about it with coaches and their athletic directors, or even an NFL with the GM, and so on and so forth. So that is a, I think that there's tension there. Because Kyle didn't give him that money. Now he's technically paying in that money right now and he didn't recruit him. And what I find in these situations, when new staffs come in, generally the old players,

6:08they've got to adapt to the coaching staff versus the other way around. When a coaching staff might adapt in particular from a schematics perspective to the player that they recruited and brought in, there's more of a willingness for the coaches to adjust. And what I saw on film against Western Michigan was identical to what Utah ran. And you would expect that with Jason Beck, their new offensive coordinator. But there's a lot of things in there that candidly, you know, weren't in the wheelhouse for Bryce Underwood. He's not a developed pocket passer. In particular from a processing standpoint, getting through progressions. And those are things that are not his strength. So they need to, I think, adjust. And if you don't see them adjust, I believe that it's kind of a signal like this and this is what we're gonna do. And we're gonna find somebody that can operate what we wanna do. Now, but there's certainly tension there. And then there's just the other side of this, which is the locker room. The locker room clearly watched the film. They understand what went on last week. And it wasn't great, guys.

7:08It wasn't great to put it lightly. And you have an obligation as a college football coach, and really a coach of any sport in any level to play the players to give you the best chance of win. That's your obligation to the rest of the team. And so the tension also will then leak into the team in particular on the defensive side when they're looking around saying, we're doing our job. It puts somebody in that can operate. So I think we're gonna see that come to fruition this Saturday. Either he's gonna play well or he's not. And I wouldn't put it out of the equation that we would see a change even in the middle of this game. Going to your game last weekend, you got to see my new and unimproved, mean green Eagles take on the defending champions. How are you not at least somewhat encouraged by what you saw? Well, that's what I was gonna ask you about. Well, two problems. One about that. Where do I have asking at Dave? Well, the sleep in your bedroom. I have the covers all pulled up.

8:10No, but I think cozy. The, yeah. So, but they did hang in there. The North Texas did hang in there into the third quarter. So I was proud of them. And then on the flip side, the Oklahoma State experiment, they really had a tough time at home against Tulsa. Or I guess that was at Tulsa, but it still was a tough result. Can you talk about the, those two programs and how they kinda had similar but different opening weekends? Well, for my vantage point, I thought Neil Brown was put into an almost impossible situation trying to build a roster, bring in 72 new players and then try to make it cohesive out there. I was actually incredibly impressed with North Texas and the way that they played, I thought specifically up front on the offensive line, they did a pretty nice job against what most of us considered to be as deeper as good of a defensive front seven as there is in college football. And they did a decent job.

9:10It wasn't like Dave and Jackson was running for his life. I really liked their game plan, putting him on the move. And Jehem White is a difference maker at that level. I did not anticipate that we would get in here and go deep on the mean green of North Texas, but there you go. I was very optimistic about what Neil Brown can do there. Yeah, we just wanted to be mentioned. Yeah, it was a fine showing. And look, the first half was good and I thought it was good from Josh Hoover. I think if you're an Indian fan, you saw everything that you were looking for in a kid that had a few question marks coming in. Yeah, in particular, it was a decision making, not turning the football over. That was the big question that I think most people had with all their turnovers. And more specifically with the comments between Sonny Dykes and Kurt Signetti. But yeah, I mean, I think that they're going to be just fine. Indian is going to be a good football team. And part of it is because their passing game is going to be so strong with Hoover.

10:12This is Joe Klatte and the Joe Klatte show. I had a special time this week because things are happening, things are busy. There's a couple of things we do have to get to though with regards to Texas and Ohio State because I believe that would probably be the game that most of America is most riveted by on the weekend. I want to be fair to all the other games, but that's a big one. How big is it though for Texas in particular? And for really just what we've talked about in the past, Joe, which is they're at a very, very, very high level and they've lost every time they've played Georgia and every time they've played Ohio State and that's a ridiculous measuring stick. But it's also probably a fair one if you're Texas. Well, I think all the pressure is on Texas because Ohio State has been above and beyond this game

11:13under Ryan Dees. Got the Michigan Monkey off of his back. He won a national championship. And now he's going to go down there. For them, I do believe it's kind of business as usual. They've beaten this team twice in the last couple of years. But for Texas, there's, and we've talked about this, there seems to be a ceiling on Sark and Texas. And that feeling is that they don't win these games. They haven't won the SEC and haven't gone past the national semi-final. And I think that there's a sentiment in Austin and surrounding those Texas fans that they need to push forward and progress and take it the next step. I think this is that game for them. In particular, being at home, they're highly resourced. They brought in a lot of good transfers. I think that they're better on the offensive line although we'll see on Saturday. And I think the same could be said for Ohio State. But the pressure is all on the Texas side. I think we're about to see a very different game than what we witnessed last year and week one. Both of those quarterbacks were a touch of an unknown. I know that we all knew Manning's name, but let's face it, we hadn't really seen him play against that level of competition.

12:15I think he and the offensive line were overwhelmed by Matt Patricia, the defensive coordinator. And then on the other side, it was like the old manual stick shift for Ohio State. They realized that they weren't gonna give up many points and it was like, all right, down shift, down shift, down shift. And they played a very vanilla game to protect Julian San. Exact opposite this year. Both of these guys are experienced. They've got weapons on the outside. So the pressure for me sits on the offensive line. Whichever offensive line can control the game, provide a little bit of a run game and more specifically protect the passer. It's gonna allow those guys to shine out and really play well, get the ball to the stars on the outside like Ryan, we go at a great game and obviously Jeremiah Smith, who I think he's as good as we've seen in a long time. That's where the game's wanted to loss for me is the offensive line. And whichever one plays better is gonna get the victory in Austin. We haven't talked about the game of chicken that LSU and the SEC have been playing. So the SEC threatens to kick them out.

13:15Then Lane and LSU lock their roster without inviting NFL players. But then Lane can't help himself and going into the locker room at half time against Clemson. He says, imagine how could we be with NFL players? So do you think this is over now? Can we put it to bed? I think that Lane likes to be the center of attention. I think he's designed it that way. I think he wants LSU to be the center of the college football world. This was an avenue to do it. Because let's face it, the team that we saw on the field against Clemson, they didn't need an extra backup tight end that happened to be in the preseason. They didn't need those guys. That roster is clearly talented enough as it's currently constructed. I think he loves the attention, not just personally, but for the program. He's trying to build, and he's put it, he said this from the podium. He's trying to build the early 2000s USC under Pete Carroll with the discipline and toughness of the Sabin era at Alabama. If he can do that, then watch out. They're going to be really good.

14:16I will just give one little Iota of caution. If Sam Levit thinks he can run around like that against a nine game SEC schedule, I think he's sorely mistaken. We saw that with John Matier last year. He ended up getting banged up. I know he banged his helmet on a throw, but you can't expose yourself to that many hits and expect to be healthy for the entirety of the season. So I was good as he looked, and as explosive as he looked as a runner, they have to develop some things offensively outside of that. They have that potential, absolutely. There's no doubt. But that would be just one word of caution as they move on in the season. This is Joel Klatt from Fox, from your Colorado Buffaloes, and many more things. The King of all media is what I meant. So Malachite Tony to you. Did you hear that Bob? Did you hear him cover for that one?

15:17Yeah, I know it makes sense now. Oh, I didn't think you were doing like, but Bongo Fiesta or anything. I just thought that you're using it. I mean, like, you know, of all the people on the face of the planet, I don't know if I'm more opposite than Howard Stern, but continue Corby. Exactly, exactly. Problem, Joel. Malachite Tony to me is the most intriguing guy in this sport right now. I just, I can't get enough of him and I just wonder where you are with him because in the playoffs last year, it just, it looked like he, I'm very high on Malachite Tony. The guy isn't. Look, he really is. And, you know, of course, Fernando got all the buzz and for good reason last year, but man, that guy, I swear, he may end up being the face of this season in college football. Yeah, I mean, listen, I think Smith's still the best receiver. But man, Malachite Tony is something else. He is, he is so quick. He's fast. He runs good routes. He's got great hands. He's, he's ready for the moment.

16:19I love watching him play. That Miami team looked really dangerous. If you were asking me, like, what team out of week one did you really, like, sit back and think to yourself, okay, like that's the team, that it's Miami because Daryl Minto looks like he's an upgrade at Corbac. Malachite Tony is a year older. And I think there still is dominant on the line of scrimmage, even with losing those draft picks on both sides of the ball. So he's, he's part of the reason of why I think Miami is, is prime for another run deep into the playoffs and potentially a national championship. So with, with the game this weekend, have you properly secured all information needed for the second clock? Do you have you covered this? Yeah, you know, I'm going to hunt. I'm going to hunt that secret clock down and I'm going to try to snap a picture of it. And at the start, I think me and Gus could just, you know, look at our wristwatch and just give a one, two, three and say, think and be like, okay, we're good to go because that was, that was,

17:22that was wild. I will say this, if we just, let's just say for the sake of argument, that it was full transparency in the review. And NBC would have been able to just put the review on the air and not do their own, you know, replays with overlays of the clock. No one would have said anything because based on the replay that the big 10 gave us, now, Grant, I don't know where that clock came from or what the lay it was on. But based on that replay, we all say, like, okay, yeah, it touched with, with a second. Now, do I believe that there was a second left? No, no, I don't. That being said, you know, the, the uproar is because of the discrepancy between what we were seeing on TV and what was going on in replay. So now you saw two huge announcements and I've been talking about this for a long time and I even talked about it on Monday on my show. Number one is now the protocol will be official and written in that the replay has to use the versions of video that are being showed on television. So there's not a discrepancy between what they're ruling and seeing and, and what the fans are seeing.

18:22And then the other side of this is that the big 10, I think very alertly has said, okay, screw this. We're going full transparency from here on out. We're going to allow every replay to be taken live by the broadcast. That's a really good decision. I think every other conference should follow suit. The ACC is already doing big, a big 12 is doing it. Now the big 10 and now it's just the SEC that needs to be on board. Here's the, here's the funny part. My game Saturday, Oklahoma and Michigan SEC officials. So we won't be able to take the three plays live. God. Well, surely nothing weird is going to happen, right? You can't. I mean, if it does, I'm just going to say audibly on the broadcast. Well, Gus, I'm out. Yeah. Literally. All right. Have a good call, man. Look forward to watching you and all that good stuff. And we'll do it again next week. You got it. I'm sorry. I was rough on Dave. That was that was a tough one day better.
