Our buddy Brian Demaris wrote a great article in D Magazine about Cooper
and the case for Cooper concerning the rookie of the year
over his Duke teammate, Khan Kinepple.
And I still cannot get over the fact that
that Duke team with the two best rookies in the league
somehow didn't win the championship last year.
I mean, it's a Lajuan and Drexler.
Okay.
So, a P1 actually brought that up and said,
what does that tell you about Luca joining North Texas and going on a run?
Yeah. They get there.
I don't know if they can win it, but I think they get there.
But they get out of their region.
Yeah.
Just because they have a special player, but here's Duke with all the special players
and it's not good enough because it's, it's a tournament that it's brilliance
is based completely on you can't have a bad game.
No, it's the one game premise.
And honestly, with the exception of the NFL, none of the other sports
offer that.
No.
And you kind of got to love it.
I guess the World Cup would argue with us when it comes to well,
they can get you get out in a group like Asia.
So, so this is, this is a pretty unique thing that probably is why we call
March madness, March madness is that there is an incredible amount of value on
one bad shooting game.
One guy turned his ankle and has to miss the entire second half.
It's like a foul trouble type situation and your entire season is gone.
Well, like the one Houston was the team that eliminated Duke last year, I think.
Yeah.
Right.
And it was, it was because they called an over the back and not the whole game
wasn't decided on this, but the late game play was an over the back on called
on Cooper, which the Duke fans will tell you was the biggest scam ever.
But if you are a Duke fan, you've been incredibly spoiled.
Obviously, but as sports fans, we look at the ones that got away.
I promise you, Duke fans, that team last year with those two guys.
And then the third guy, they had a third guy drafted in the first round.
Yeah.
Yeah.
The big center.
Yeah.
So the fact that they didn't win last year.
Not the tiny center.
Just to be clear, just to be clear for everybody.
But yeah, Brian, it's a great article.
And, you know, we talked about this not too long ago about how,
what is the rookie of the year really mean?
It doesn't mean anything.
Nothing.
It's a feather in the cap for an organization.
And it's a feather in the cap for the player.
But it doesn't determine anything at all.
It's just a nice thing to have at the end of the year to say, I was the best.
And it's going to be close.
Because Conniple is a badass.
Now, I see the all around player that Cooper flag is no, not even close, not even close.
But when you say you lead the NBA with 243 field goals, three point field goals as a rookie.
It's pretty good.
It's wild.
It's insanity that that guy is that good of a shooter.
But as Brian says, Cooper is averaging 20.1 points, 6.7 rebounds, 4.5 assists while facing the opponent's best defender at the age of 18 and 19.
And I think that's the key with this kid.
No matter if he wins this thing or not, we just got to remember this should be his freshman year in college.
This should be the year that he's wowing everyone and he's, you know, like we joke about it.
But I don't know who the guy was that brought this up.
Did oh, throw Cooper flag into this draft.
Now he may be picked fifth or sixth or something crazy like that.
Cooper flag would be the number one pick in the draft this year, last year, really any year outside of Wimbee and LeBron.
Cooper flag is the number one pick, right?
Is it Wimbee and LeBron?
Do we somewhat agree on those two?
Yeah, I would imagine we would have to agree on those two.
I guess what I'm wondering is in this fantasy San Antonio spurs season, if they have conknipple regret.
Maybe.
I mean, Dylan Harper is going to be a very, very, very good way.
Where was con taken?
I believe he went fourth.
Let's review that in the, yes, yes, you had, you had Dylan Harper to the spurs.
You had VJ edge comb to the sixers and then conknipple fourth to the Charlotte Hornets.
And, you know, just like this year, it is top eight are all college freshmen and all of the one and done variety.
And yeah, when I look at the spurs, you just, you look ahead to a potential playoff series.
And in general, and I don't pretend to in no way shape or form should people think Bob's been locked on to 82 spurs games this year,
because that's absolutely not the case.
However, in the time I have seen them, it has occurred to me that a dude shooting at that level.
Would greatly enhance their possibilities of getting past a team like Oklahoma City, especially with an eight foot man that can play wherever.
But if you want to play him around the, you know, around the paint, having a guy that's the best shooter in the league, it helps.
Yeah, they just, you know, in terms of the spurs, they, they have some three point shooting.
But it's, it's not extensive. It's, it's two guys averaging two made threes a game is their entire list right now.
In fact, the third guy is Wembee at 1.9 threes per game.
And it falls, you know, from there with, with Fox and Barnes, it is a, it is a group effort.
But when you talk about the value of just having a guy who puts the ball in the basket.
So effortlessly like Canippell does.
I think it, you know, now to Brian's point, which I think is a good one, Canippell never is facing.
Game plans that he is the biggest circle on that Hornets, you know, list of threats.
He is part of an ensemble and, and they have two or three other pieces that do take a lot of defensive attention.
And, and I don't think the same thing would be set of Cooper flag.
But let's leave the Mavericks and flag out of this and the rookie of the year conversation and simply say.
If the spurs could have that back.
Could they win the title this year?
I think so.
And, you know, maybe this is, this is one of those CJ Stroud, Bryce Young conversations that might take several turns along the way.
And it probably will because Dylan Harper is going to be, you know, pretty special.
We assume.
And they're barely scratching the surface on him.
I think the key.
I'll go ahead Dave.
I was just going to say I think I know the answer.
But is there, you know, when you talk about the MVP, it's not necessarily the best player.
But the best player on the best team.
Yeah.
So is there any of that in the rookie of the year in the fact that the Hornets are so much better than the maps?
Not historically.
They don't go by that.
That's not like a big indicator of who's going to win.
But maybe it will.
I don't know.
I mean, I look.
I would have no problems of con Kanepal one.
But the clutch points thing is huge to me.
The Mavericks have played in as Brian says, the Lehigh 40 clutch games.
Cooper is 15th in the NBA and clutch scoring.
Best among amongst rookies.
He's got 85 clutch points.
Last year's Stefan Castle.
Let all rookies with 38.
Palo Bencaro has had 91 in his rookie season.
And Khan has 48 right now to to Cooper's 85.
And by the way, from the clutch standpoint that another one last night they lost.
Brilliant loss in overtime.
Maybe we get to the injury during storm center.
But.
If you have a competent point guard.
Right.
I mean, they were letting Cooper bring the ball up.
He got pick pocketed three or four times last night.
Had a ton of turnovers.
Not his position.
Clearly.
What would happen if they did have Kyrie in 41 of these clutch games that they played in?
41 and they've lost, you know, 75% of them.
Well, that number slides to probably 50%.
And then add another playmaker that you may get in the draft this year.
You keep this is not a terrible team.
No.
Their record indicates is such.
But it doesn't take much to flip the script on clutch games like that.
Kyrie will make the a world of difference as well.
If you get dairy as a cuff, whoever it may be.
Next year, it's going to make a massive impact on how you play.
How things are spaced in the final five minutes of basketball games.
By the way, you know, make some most threes per game this year.
Per game.
Yep.
The NBA.
The Charlotte Horrits.
And of course, they're about to end their 10 year playoff drought.
Yeah.
So yeah, I guess the point there is.
Kniepples really good.
He's awesome.
Fun to watch too.
Action.
Next roll with Vernon Davis.
I'm your host, Vernon Davis.
Okay, y'all.
Thank you.
That's my.
Today, we have Dietrich Wy.
Through my example on the field, off the field during game day in practice.
That was one way that I led.
Because then it leads to success.
Next roll isn't about what's next.
It's about why they do it.
My man.
Bobby Bones.
Like I've had a lot of stuff happen, bad and good.
And so I don't have any fear of mixing up.
That's proud of them.
