Totally, I think we all have those moments or seasons where maybe you're not getting along super well with the people in your class
and you feel really lonely or you were feeling overwhelmed about the future.
I know that we definitely feel like that sometimes.
This is Mercedes and Anastasia.
And they are teen entrepreneurs, speakers and co-founders of small bits of happiness,
which is a platform dedicated to helping people build simple everyday habits for a happier life.
They also host the Hack Your Happiness Podcast where they chat with experts and thought leaders about mental wellness, resilience and what it really takes to feel good.
Welcome to the podcast, ladies.
Thank you.
We're so excited.
Thank you for having us.
Let's start off with how did you end up here on our podcast?
Yeah, well, we started our business, small bits of happiness.
I think it was about three years ago now.
I was, maybe it was four years, I was 13.
Going on 14, Anastasia was 11, it was during COVID.
And we were both just kind of struggling to feel happy, you know, between teen hormones and friendship issues to, you know, living in a pandemic.
It was kind of a stressful time filled with a lot of uncertainty.
And we found that when we were, we as a family would do things that we like love.
And they made us happy whether it was like watching a comedy or going for a bike ride and found that those things they like made our day just a little bit better.
And we wanted to share, you know, that active intentionally focusing on something positive with our peers, because we noticed a lot of them were struggling as well.
And the statistics are the same thing. So we started on social media posting like quotes and fun facts, just because we thought that's the easiest place to reach teenagers.
And from there we grew to our website, we meet products and then we launched our podcast a few years later.
So it's just kind of been like a really cool evolution.
What was the reception of your peers of what you were doing, because sometimes people with themselves out there, it's not always a positive reception, but you guys are like, who do they think they are?
Like, why do they think that they can bring us happiness? Why do they care about happiness? How come they're not just, you know, wanting to like be like cool and go on dates? Like, what's this about?
Yeah, definitely. I think the reception was like very positive and we were very happy to see that.
I know that our friends were like, very supportive about it. They thought it was a very cool idea, as well as all of the people we would meet at events that we would go to or like pop ups.
All of these moms would be like brought to tears at the opportunity to connect and to find more happiness and, you know, bond more with their families.
And it was definitely very positive. And we were so happy to kind of see that.
Yeah, I think a lot of people really struggled during the pandemic and just in general, I can be really tough sometimes.
And so there was like a really clear need for what we were doing, which made it, you know, really easy to connect with parents and also with our own friends.
I think a lot of them could relate to what we were talking about.
Why do you think that like you and your family were able to find these little bits of happiness, but like other families were struggling to find it?
What did your family have that was different or that your relationship with your parents differed from what you were seeing and other families?
Yeah, I think it's interesting because it's true. These are all things that, you know, everyone does on a regular basis, whether it is, you know, eating ice cream or going for a bike ride or anything like that.
But I think what really helped us kind of see the opportunity that wow, this is really something that's like standing out in my day to day routine was just the fact that as a family, we would talk about it.
Like since me and I usually were kind of really struggling, we would talk about like, well, or like our mom would prompt us like what's something that, you know, was good to happen today.
Or what's something that you're grateful for and I think just that like helps us really hone in on, well, these are like little silver linings.
And then we were like, wait, but what if we shared those with others because they, they must be experiencing.
And I remember when we were younger, I don't know where she kind of decided to find this idea.
But she was like, you know, she bought each of us notebooks and she was like, we are going to start to be in track of like just three good things that happen every day, three things you're grateful for.
And I know that originally Mercedes and I, because we were pretty young already at this point, we just didn't really know what to think of the idea.
We didn't really think it was that important, but we continue to kind of do that.
And it really kind of compounded and it really became this habit that was really important.
And we thought was incredible. And we really wanted to share that because it is so small, but it's so powerful and really, really helped us so much.
You guys are like, okay, so you're running it so as moms, because we have kids, your age, you.
What impacts you like when you're not feeling happy, like do you find like social media can be like, oh God, I was because we run a business.
Sometimes you're like, I wish I could grow faster. I wish we could do more like, how do you, how do you keep the comparison, the thief of comparison track when you're so young.
And what do you think teenagers who are looking at you being like, I wish I could do something like that.
But they're stuck in the moments of not being happy. You know what I mean? Like how do you how do you balance the feelings of a teenager?
Absolutely. I think that it can definitely be hard sometimes when you're on social media and you're seeing like all these big companies, but you have to realize that you're on your own journey.
And that especially learning about other like big companies and reading their books and listening to podcasts and realizing that, you know, firstly growing your business, as I'm sure you know, it's a long journey and it takes a long time.
And compare comparing to other people just kind of takes away from your own joy because, you know, every company is going to be different.
As well as, you know, in our own lives, it can be so easy to always be comparing yourself.
Oh, but, you know, they have a business or they have really great grades or they're extremely athletic.
But again, realizing that you are a different person and you're going to achieve different things and that there's maybe another person even out there comparing themselves to you because you're in a position of having something that maybe they want.
I think, you know, it's just this idea that I always remind myself of whether I'm having a good day or not.
So good day is like trusting the timing of your life because different things happen at different times and maybe like you're not ready for that big leap or you're not prepared enough or you don't have enough knowledge, even if you think you do for that next step in your business.
So it's all about taking those small steps forward. And I think that can apply to teenagers as well and like our friends, even if they're not into business.
Because it's all about just kind of trusting where you're at while still being able to look ahead and say, oh, I want to, you know, end up there at some point, but like I'm happy and content in the daily motions of where I'm at as well.
Yeah, you two are blowing my mind. I love like I need to know what does your mom do?
Our mom is a photographer, which is very helpful for us because we have a lot of products that we like to take photos of.
So it's very helpful. You guys are sisters. So do it like do you because we have I have daughters and they're much farther and each than you too.
But there's a dynamic of sisters that is not always like there's competition. Sometimes there's like, you know, there's feelings with the business you guys are running a business and your sisters and you're going to school and you're doing a podcast.
And he's dealing chose clothes and getting fights about it. Is that just like how we like being grateful and positive when we're also living real life.
Yeah, of sisters like how do we recover from the moments that like, that's my sweater.
No, we don't do that over there.
We definitely do have moments like that, especially not so much over clothes. I feel like we're pretty good at sharing clothes, but it lives in your closet. You were first tips.
Yeah, that's how we usually go about that. But we definitely do have moments where we're like upset or I'm like anesthesia. Why didn't you know post that on Instagram? I really wanted that to be up or something where we have like these moments that are natural in a sisterly relationship.
But I think it's just we've gotten a lot closer since working together because we we spend more time together and where each other is really good friends.
We've always been really close like when we were younger, we used to play with Barbies like all day, whenever we have a spare minute, we were always playing together.
And so I feel like we kind of like have changed from playing dolls together to now running a business together.
So we've kind of always had like we get over our kind of conflicts, whatever they may look like that day.
Pretty quickly because we just really enjoy each other's company.
I think the other big thing for our relationship is knowing that like if one of us says something that isn't always the kindest knowing that we don't really mean it.
It's just out of like you know the heat of the moment, but I think having that kind of relationship where you know that like even if something is said, you don't have to really like feel it.
It doesn't have to really hurt you because it's just, you know, again, like that heat of the moment.
We've also established a good balance in terms of like we work together, but we also like watch movies together, we go on walks together, we go shopping together, like we spend a lot of time outside of you know doing work or doing a podcast.
So that we still have like a really good like time is just says stars.
When you're like when you were talking about business and you were like everybody's on their own journey and they have their like their own time.
So don't compare.
Do you read a lot of books about that or where do you gain your inspiration just like a site.
Yeah, aside from the you know finding the bit of happiness itself, running a business, where do you get that inspiration and that yeah.
We love listening to podcasts Mercedes and I always listen to them together when we're like getting ready to go to bed.
I love like diary of a CEO as well as I'm a greets podcast. I think that they all have such amazing insights on that you can learn from.
I know that we also love watching like TV shows and movies like the super pumped TV show and like we crashed and I just know it's really cool.
Definitely like the podcast are good with like more practical advice. The shows are fun for like inspiration and motivation, but I think as well as like for practical advice.
I do love reading books about like other businesses like retail businesses or not retail businesses like all types of different platforms because I think there's a lot to learn from others.
Out there and especially in this stage like there's so much amazing knowledge like you can watch YouTube videos or Instagram accounts that share like practical knowledge or like lessons from other people's companies.
I know there's whole accounts that will like break down the best things you should put in your email marketing.
The best things you should do for your social media marketing and so there's a lot of like free resources or really inexpensive resources as well.
Are you guys in school too? How are we balancing everything or how are we you know because we have.
You guys seem to prioritize time like you must be very good at time management and not feel a lot of stress is that true.
Definitely sometimes we get very stressed especially you know final season. Yeah.
I think what's most important for us is realizing that there's kind of like those seasons that happen and you know for example when it's January or June and you know you have all those big exams coming up.
You have to kind of realize like if I have this huge exam which is clearly very important to do well on you know I'm going to maybe have a little bit less free time.
Maybe that means less walks with the family or less like movie time and more like studying and work and maybe if I have a midterm or a final tomorrow.
I can ask Mercedes to help me out with maybe posting on social media or maybe I can work on the newsletter tomorrow and kind of realizing that it's okay to.
You know not have everything always super rigid and super structure that things can kind of you know they can shift a little bit as your lives shift.
And then also when you have like the summer or a break then you can kind of realize that okay I can start to do more here because I have more time.
And I think a big part of it is like anesthesia and I we tried our hand at like piano and volleyball and all those things but we don't have another like extra curricular.
So I think you know when most people would go to like soccer practice like that's when we go home and do our work or do another type of business related activity because that's what we like to do.
So yeah I'm going to take a break and then ask you as a question because mental health is such a big conversation amongst your age and anxiety and there's so many other elements within sort of the mental health world for your age.
Do you do you guys experience those moments or did you ever struggle with anxiety or do you think having a project, a mission, a focus helps take away from overthinking about what you're not doing or where you should be or you know what I mean like I wonder if what you're doing gives you.
A different place to land so you don't have the same obsessive thoughts of feeling like all the other teenagers do totally I think you know we all have those moments or seasons where like maybe you're not getting along super well with the people in your class and you feel really lonely or you were feeling overwhelmed about the future.
I know that we definitely feel like that sometimes I don't think anyone's at least I haven't met anyone who's immune to that but I think a big part of like what we've learned through speaking to psychologists or learning about you know happiness and positivity and mindset is like about how for sure you're not alone in feeling those ways and that really helps and just having more self awareness of like yes I feel you know overwhelmed right now or stressed about what's coming in the future but.
I know that like I can't control that so I'm going to not spend as much time you know thinking about that we're seeing the comparison is like we've learned so much about you know how our minds work and the teenage mind through and adult mind through our work that I think it's really given us a greater sense of self awareness and like having a purpose and getting you know waking up in the morning and feeling like you know we have something bigger to work towards I think does really give us something.
I know that we also have great strategies for you know when you are kind of having a bad day I'm huge on journaling I love to just kind of write down my feelings and I think that that kind of really lessons that kind of burden that can kind of build up as well as it really helps you also like look back you know you're able to see I was going through a bit of a tough time but I was able to get past that.
I have like that physical recollection of your life in your past and being able to see like you're good and you're bad and that you just keep going.
I think a big part of it is like we've been able to learn a lot of really good like kind of wellness I guess you could say strategies that help you be more grounded and less stress like for instance I love to exercise every morning because it makes me feel like I'm productive from the start and it helps me you know kind of start the day on a productive positive note and that's something that I wouldn't know.
That's something that I would not know to implement in my routine if it hadn't been for some of the learnings we've been going through.
I feel like you know we talk a lot about how you know we've got seven kids and we talk about perspective and how it's really hard to have perspective when you don't have experience but feel like a lot of the things that you're talking about it's like you have learned or you're able to.
But not your parents yeah yeah and to implement things like like when you said you journal and you went through a hard time that you can go back and say I remember going through that like those things are a lot of like a lot of seniors can't even imagine how that would be important so they skip over all of those steps.
I think also parents telling them what they should be doing versus their curious about what they should be doing so they're learning from experts to help other people in a way they're helping themselves by learning about other people right so you're really getting it from a different voice than your parents being like you should do this and we're all like I know but I don't want to yeah you also seem like you're really like receptive to other people who might be older than you or more experienced like.
Like advice and suggestion and knowledge and you absorb it where a lot of teenagers reject it because they don't want to hear it.
I know they're grown up and maybe that's why your platform is really great for teens because they're hearing it from their peers and then maybe parents can like learn how to talk to their kids or at least you know hear it from you guys.
Okay so you are 18.
Yes.
Just being here in the last year of high school.
I am. Yeah I'm graduating in just a couple months which is very exciting.
Well what the heck are you going to do?
Well I'm definitely going to keep working on small to happiness because I love it and it's so exciting where we keep growing it but I'm going to stay in my hometown university.
So we're from Calgary, Alberta so I'm going to go to the University of Calgary just because we work so closely together I don't really want to leave.
I'm also hoping you weren't going to say you were going to leave her. I'm like you can't leave her.
You can't leave? Are you going to live at home?
I'm going to yeah and I'm doing media and communications so I think that should hopefully be a really good fit for our work and meet people who are into the similar into similar things.
Well be and how often you put out your podcast once a week.

Wow, that's hard staying consistent like that too, right?
Yeah, that's a lot of work.
But we've got a good flow.
I figured it out.
Who, like if you were to say to parents,
do you think you, do you hear kids more or do you think you hear adults more?
Like in your, who do you think needs more of the, of the you too?
Is it the parents were like, I need to understand my, my teens better or is it the teens that are like,
I need to connect with my parents more, which, which way does that swing for you guys in terms of your audience?
Yeah, I think it's definitely a lot more parents who are looking for ways, new ways to connect with their kids and help them, you know, feel happier and feel better in their day to day lives.
And like you said, exactly connect with them.
So a lot of what we do is like the team perspective, what your team might be experiencing or how it could, you know, affect you and their team.
Do you, how do you think phones and social media and the access to a 24 seven world impacts teens and, and parents, do you think that it's,
do you think it's a problem or no?
I think that there is definitely like a good and bad aspect to it.
Like it can kind of be true both at the same time.
I think that it's really great because you can connect with your friends and same contact, even if you don't live in the same place.
Like I love to send, you know, videos to my friend who, you know, lives far away.
But at the same time, it can be hard because it does create like a bigger place for you to compare yourself to others.
It also can feel like you're kind of only getting that highlight reel, especially of your own friends lives.
You're not really seeing the whole version of it.
You're just seeing that kind of like polished little real though printing out.
And it can be easy to tell from, you know, influencers online and say, oh, you know, I know that this is not the whole story.
But oftentimes when it's like your friend posting, it can feel like everyone around me has such a great perfect life, except for me.
It can definitely be really hard in that case.
But at the same time, it also has, you know, that great kind of fun aspect of being able to connect and being able to also meet people online and kind of also have like your interest and learn more about stuff on there.
Because don't you feel like that's a huge issue with parents and teenagers and it's such a time waste or like it's a procrastination tool really like you can, you can waste so much time online.
What were the rules for you guys because you're running a business and I'm assuming though, you can't get little bits of happiness if you're on your device.
I'm assuming that would be the reason that is a research we know that that you can't get little bits of happiness if you're on your phone.
For extended amounts of time, what is that place for you guys and the rules in your house?
Yeah, I think, you know, we definitely try to limit how much time we spend on screens because I mean like the science says that it really can do a lot more harm than we then good.
I see your parents not the parent you and that or no, you guys are just self aware enough to know that.
So when we were younger, we did not get phones until we were I think 13, 12 or 13, but we had like an iPad that we would like watch YouTube for like we could message our friends.
Like you there and we would have like a limit of like 30 to 40 ish minutes a day on there and then we would like play together like with our dolls and stuff we loved that.
And then as we got older, we got a bit more freedom, but I think we really try to stay within that like one hour range for how much time it's been on line and it turned into less like games and more like, especially during COVID for us like and after face timing your friends and stuff like that.
But I think we really try because we've grown up this way and we really do from what we've learned see exactly the reason for it is like connecting in person or like doing things not on the screen is a lot better for attention span and for your own well being and happiness.
And I think because we've kind of grown up that way we've really tried to keep that for ourselves now as we have more independent.
I know for me it's really important not to like look at social media or online anything for at least like the first hour of my day because I feel like your brain is still waking up and if you're kind of just first thing you do you just start bombarding it with like doom scrolling and stuff.
It can be so easy to you know fall into that habit and then kind of have like a bad day because you just feel like I'm productive and I definitely make sure to stay away from that.
If your eyes are the windows to your soul and your glasses are the windows to your eyes then it's pretty important to find your perfect frames.
That's why at Warby Parker we've made shopping for I wear as easy and fun as can be peruse endless styles in our stores or use our app to virtually try on frames and get personalized recommendations to find your next favorite pair of glasses sunglasses or contact lenses or to locate your nearest Warby Parker store.

Like we I talk a lot about that word on the common parent is like it it's a time it's a time sucker. It's like it is your productivity like it pulls from the productivity making them feel worse about themselves.
So your parents put habits and early to teach you how to manage your time from a young age. So it wasn't like they had to claw time back. They taught you early on.
How to manage it so you knew and then through the experts and the guests you've talked about. How to manage it and keep yourself productive because happiness if your goals all happiness like what are those keys that parents are missing.
For their kids happiness because I don't know how many parents are sitting there being like my teenager is so happy there's happy for personalities but like you know happiness isn't as an evolving place we're all trying to get to.
So like what are those things that parents are missing for happiness in their in their teenager what can they do to help them get there.
Yeah, I definitely think you know that leading by example piece it's like it's so important for teens and tweens not to be on their phones but at the same time like it's important for the parents to also like not be on their phones during meals or during conversations together.
Because it's kind of like a lead by example piece for that and I think another thing is is really just connecting and having different conversations so like we are big on like conversations starters or like going for a walk and talking it's part side by side because those are really great ways to connect and like learn more about each other and then outside of that.
I think one of the biggest ways for parents to help their teens to feel happy is like honestly encouraging them to go after things that they're really passionate about and learn about them because we all have something that we're interested in whether it's science or art or music or anything in between fashion.
And really just encouraging them like hey I found this book for you that relates to that or this cool online class that we could get into if you wanted to and I think like really leaning into those passions and interested not saying the so that it has to be their job or anything like that but just like exploring it because it makes you happy.
I know it's fun because my dad is always sending me like different articles or stuff about I don't know something that he knows that i'm interested in.
And it's a really nice way because you really feel like seen like your parent knows who you are they know what you're interested in and they're just they're looking out there if they're they see an article they're just sending it to you because they know that that's something that you're interested in and you're just you're on the top of their mind.
That's that's and that's interesting like is i'm thinking that often we'll send things you know send like articles or reals or something to my kids if I think it's.
reiterating a lesson that i'm trying to teach them, which is not necessarily what they are excited to open up, but those kind of things like i'm thinking you know of someone that I know in particular who.
Has that you can tell has this like side passion for cooking but it's like oh well cooking may not be like that like competitive sport or that studying for that grade but it's an interest in that again doesn't have to be your job but just like.
Like giving attention to that thing and noticing that they're good at or they like it and then like differentiating between like your kids talking to them about different things that interest them that's.
I think that's a good that's a good tip so i'm sitting here thinking about my four kids and i'm like.
What are some things that I know interest that different interest them so your dad's any articles on things that you're interested that's I think that's a good like easy tip to for parents to.
What if you have a kid who's like I don't know what i'm interested in i'm not interested in anything do you come across that with teenagers and what is your advice to those parents yeah i mean 100% I think for that it's just like supporting.
Your team like meaning the weather at I think sometimes especially when you know we're going through that phase where we don't know who we are we don't know what we want to do we don't know.
What we like I think it's also just kind of me like it's okay to not know it's okay to you know not know who you are not know your future is going to look like I think sometimes we feel like we're like not good enough for ourselves our friends or our parents and so like reassuring your team that like it's okay to not know.
Who you are and that's normal and maybe kind of giving them different ideas of things to do if you think that's something they would be receptive to like if they genuinely are just confused and want to try things out or maybe they're just kind of.
In a phase where they're just you know kind of not really sure and don't want to experiment trying to find things and just kind of.
Just supporting them through that I think it's important and also just like spending time together doing things that you know they they might enjoy like going for a walk or.
Watching a comedy or making your favorite meal I think there's just like simple things that we can do as well that are fun to connect over.
I you guys are great I love I love your energy I love your positivity you're like wise beyond your years do not that you have to answer this question and you could be continue doing exactly what you're doing for the rest of forever but is there any like sort of like dream out there that you guys have that you want to accomplish whether it's some big project.
Being on Broadway like I know is you know going to the moon what is the is there something and there doesn't have to be I this is what you're doing is more than enough yeah unfortunately Mercedes and I are not exactly talented enough singers to be on Broadway.
I never know girls.
I can answer all those love fashion so much and what I love so much about small bits of happiness is that there's so much a good a creative outlet that I can have so.
Being able to do designs and do different like sweater and short ideas has been really great and I know that I would continue to do more designs because that's really what I love doing and kind of.
Giving my creativity through that aspect yeah I'm just a very skilled designer I think for me is just continuing growing small bits of happiness growing the business helping more.
Parents and teens and tweens find just small moments of good and daily life like that's I'm just really passionate about that so I yeah I just want to keep reaching more people and growing the business.
And you guys also are for hire for being speakers right yeah we do we do some speaking we we just love connecting with people about these topics.
Have you done a lot of speaking yet we've done a fair because we do a lot of the teachers conventions which happen annually so we do quite a few of those and sometimes those lead to to more invites to other conventions of the same kind of vein so.
And are you guys are you profitable.
I'm not sure I'm not quite sure I don't really know.
Dot part is at the goal though to become a business like this would be your business that you run together yes yeah definitely.
Yeah I see this for yeah I don't see you to stop and I'm going to do this for you to that's exciting and that's okay to want to be profitable to you know when you work so hard and you give your thoughts and your ideas is actually.
Exactly what you two should get because we don't want you to go off and have to get some other job and leave everybody hang and hang and dry.
Voice may need your ideas thing and you're and your fashion.
Thank you so much for coming on we're so we're so glad to meet you and I think that our audience will love to hear your perspective and your little like your little nuggets that could help us.
Trans connect with our kids because all we want all any parent ever wants is the kid to be happy not all the time that's okay but sometimes and and you guys are doing a really good job of.
Of that message where can they find you I know you guys have a newsletter you have products you have a lot I would say the best place for you to find us is either our website which is small bits of happiness dot com.
