Jacksonville Jaguars focus on building defensive depth as the NFL Draft approaches. Can Tony Wiggins’ strategy of stacking the defense propel the Jaguars past last season’s hurdles and into playoff contention?
Tony Wiggins highlights the importance of reinforcing Jacksonville’s secondary with key names like Travis Hunter and Jourdan Lewis returning from injury, while stressing the need to draft best-available defensive talent. Key topics include the impact of injuries, strategies for maximizing competition, and how shoring up positions like safety and cornerback could keep the Jaguars resilient through a tough AFC South schedule. Insights on roster economics, the lessons of depth from teams like the Seahawks, and questions about how the Jaguars can create a dominant unit set the stage for draft week drama. The Jaguars need to stack their defense for depth and to prepare for the inevitable.
And that's why the NFL draft matters and I'll talk about it here on Lockdown, Jaguars.
You are locked on Jaguars.
You're daily Jacksonville Jaguars podcast.
Part of the Lockdown podcast network.
Your team every day.
Hey, what's up, y'all?
I'm Tony Wiggins here on Lockdown, Jaguars.
Let me give you an idea of what we're going to go over here today.
The end of the show, we're going to talk about stuff happens.
That's why depth is needed.
The middle of the show, make one side great and the other.
We'll benefit complimentary football and at the top of the show they need to stack the defense in the draft.
All right, let's just get to it.
We're going to make one side of the ball great.
And the way you do that is to build this thing one, you don't have to spread it out.
Build it one thing at a time.
One of the things that they need to do is add a lot of depth on their defense.
So let me break this down and tell you why.
Look at the Jaguars last year when they came in to the season, obviously.
They didn't get to use Travis Hunter on defense as much as you would expect it them to do.
Because at the time that they look like they were trying to figure out a way to make sure that he was playing on both sides.
By the way, Travis has put out a video.
It's on YouTube wherever you can find it.
And you can go to his social media pages all to also about his working his way back.
So it's a real good look for y'all that are wondering about him.
But right around the time it looked like he was getting used to playing both sides of the ball.
He got the injury and he missed the rest of the season.
So when you take him out of the equation.
It's easy to say, okay, they're going to get him back on that defense this year.
They're going to get Jordan Lewis back.
But think about this.
They had them both last year.
They traded for Greg Newsom.
They also had Monterey Brown on the roster last year.
They had Christian Braswell.
So basically what you're telling me is they're getting everyone back.
Even though Travis is coming off of an injury.
So you got to think that he ain't going to be where you expected him to be.
At this point, if he had played the entire season.
They're getting Jordan Lewis back from injury.
They have not replaced Greg Newsom.
They have not replaced Dewey Wingard.
So they're going to, even if you believe that they have people in place.
They're going to get Caleb Rand saw back, right?
But he's another one who hasn't played very much.
So you have to actually fortify your team by getting those guys back.
But also by adding to them because you don't know.
You don't know what it's going to look like when you get three dudes coming back.
That didn't play last year in your second day.
And that's potentially three.
That's at least two of your first three.
And that's potentially three of your first five or six, right?
Here's the other thing.
You're actually trying to get better than you were last year.
So you're not trying to come back the same way you were at the beginning of last season.
And then think and rely on, okay, we get all those back guys back will be better.
No, because you actually lost some people.
And those are people that Dewey Wingard was emotional and all of that.
But at the end of the day, those are players that you say, okay, we can afford to move on from them.
And now we have to proceed.
Okay, now when you proceed, you have to think you got three guys coming back from being hurt.
Competition doesn't work that way, man.
You got to go out and you can't assume that those guys are going to be exactly what you think.
And I know that's hard to do.
It is hard to do because we expect Travis 100 to be great.
We expect Jordan Lewis to be great.
I do.
But they can't play that game over there.
You know why they can't play that game over there?
Because three of the dudes that I mentioned when they were playing Buffalo and they lost that last game, they weren't there because of injuries.
And they had to rely on other people.
And it was the weakest part of the Jaguar team in that loss was their inability to be sticky and make Josh Allen throw.
I can't say they can make hard throws because he can make those.
But to make the hard throws even a little bit harder.
I mean, it's not like they weren't winning the game with a minute and some change to go the Jaguars.
So if you make that a little bit more difficult or make one play, how did the game end?
The game ended on a Buffalo when the Jaguars were trying to drive to get themselves and feel
goal range or potentially scorch us down.
And we've seen them do it before.
And you think about it like this.
What were they on the 25 yard line or so or something like that?
25 more yards and you're at the 50.
You're already in your kickers field goal range, man.
Right?
I mean, you're literally right there.
So to think that they couldn't have done a little bit more and gotten to where they needed to get to,
to try to maybe force this game into overtime or potentially even win it.
You never know what could happen if you get, but what happened?
A tip ball.
You see how you see how it's a game of inches or tip ball.
One tip in the ball got deflected.
A guy playing with his feet, playing with his hands with confidence.
No, no, well, I would call it this a contested pass that bounced off somebody's hands.
Could have been a jaguars player.
But a contested pass and a duel with Johnny.
Completely sat right there and caught it with the instincts coming back with Trevor.
I mean, with Travis, the instincts of Jordan,
death, letticism of Caleb Rand saw another year in the defense evolving.
It's automatically easy to assume.
Okay, this thing is going to organically just get better just because of the additions.
And I got you.
That doesn't win you that game, the next game, the next game,
and then the next game, which is a Super Bowl.
So if that's what you want to do, use this draft to fortify the back end so that when they have injuries,
you make sure that you got somebody else there.
And mainly I'm talking about the entire draft all picks rounds two through seven.
I'm also really, really, really honing in on 56, 81, 88,
obviously because that's your first opportunity to do this.
So one approach could be, yeah, let's look at Will Lee out of Texas and now.
We just gave Monterey Brown a bunch of money.
Yeah, Monterey Brown has about three years to where that contract where he's going to earn all of the guaranteed money.
And you never know what's going to happen.
Injuries.
Slumps.
Looking Brian Thomas Jr. last year.
And you have to go out and get Jacoby Myers, right?
You ain't got to go get him if you already got him.
And this is your chance to get him here next week.
You build it up.
You build it up with competition.
If they don't have starters.
I understand chasing spots.
But they've, they've said that it looks like from where they are.
They're not in a position where they have to draft a certain position.
They're going to take the best players available.
You never know what you're going to need down the line because you don't know what's going to happen in training camp.
You don't know what's going to happen when the season starts.
You don't know who's going to get banged up.
You don't know who's going to start sliding and play.
You don't know how many times have we seen over and over and over again.
Where somebody goes down and somebody steps up.
Right?
As soon as this team didn't have Parker Washington.
And they would have to go get Parker Washington the way they went and got Jacoby Myers last year.
When Tommy Brown went down early, you know, and then he never really came back either.
And then when Brian Thomas Jr. was struggling.
Like when they went, when got Gabe Davis a year before, I know he didn't turn out to be much, but he also got banged up.
Right?
Injuries happen.
Things happen in the national football league.
And once you are in contention as a regular playoff contender, you have to build your team.
Actually, everybody does.
But mainly what teams that are close do is they continue to draft the best players because you never know what's going to happen.
And they fortify their roster.
There's no, there's no sign that says you have to use day two and day three picks.
Okay, this is where you go get your backups.
Really?
No.
No, you're allowed to find starters wherever you can find them.
You're allowed to find competition.
This isn't where all the bad teams can just pick all of the really, really good players.
I know the draft was kind of designed like that where you just pick all the really, really good players.
And since you're a bad team, you just automatically got a draft guys and resign them and assign them to be nothing more than backups.
That doesn't work like that.
It is all about competition.
So I think they need to build this defense up in a draft.
This is where the strength of the draft is for the jaguars in my opinion, which with respect to where they're choosing.
And with respect to where they are as a team building operation.
I'll get more into that, but I'm also tell you why it'd be a good strategy to just build one side of the ball.
Make that one side great.
We'll talk about it in just a second here on Locked On Jaguar.
Today's show sponsored and brought to you by Rouge yet.

It's crazy what people say during an awkward silence.
Now transactions are done before the silence takes hold.

Sometimes I do miss the bonding time.
Sometimes.

All right, let's get to it.
Make one side great and the other side will benefit complimentary football, right?
Get them off the field, get the ball back to Trevor Lawrence and Liam Cohn and let them cook.
The more opportunities that they can get, the more opportunities that they're confident they're going to get.
They don't have to rush and do anything.
They can really just systematically sit back and start to wear you down, especially with their new power game that they're going to run with Chris Rodriguez Jr.
And almost like a fire and ice approach with Basel Tutton being able to take that thing.
Once he gets to the second level, he can ride out with it.
So the object here is to be more physical to beat you up physically, make you get sucked in and then beat you down.
A great example of that is the Dallas Cowboys from the 90s where they came out throwing to set everything up.
And then everybody always talks about how Troy Ackman doesn't have the stats that you think he should have as a first ball in Hall of Famer.
Well, the dude behind in the Russian leader of all time, Emmett Smith had 18,000 yards for a reason, right?
And the great offensive line.
But if you pay attention, they came out throwing the loose and you up because they knew what you're going to do.
You're going to stack the line because you were afraid of the running game.
Then they go up seven and nothing on you.
And if you watch Troy Ackman split, it's first and fourth quarter.
They ran the ball in the second and third quarter.
Sometimes Dallas wouldn't even be ahead by that much in the fourth quarter.
And then they run play actions and then catch somebody going down the field, boom, touchdown.
And now a three point game turns into a ten point game and you get desperate because that defense was deep.
They could fly.
They could cover.
And that desperation, well, a lot of times lead teams to make mistakes.
And then the ground game comes in and the next thing you see Emmett Smith is churning out four yards of carry.
And he scores another touchdown and they win by two scores.
This is the way they did it.
This is why Ackman's numbers don't reflect what people think of first ballot guy.
I think Troy Ackman is the top ten quarter back all time because I witnessed what he did.
You had to be there and watch it.
Even Tom Brady, the first half of his career, he wasn't throwing for five thousand yards every single time.
They were a running team in New England.
Tom got all of those yards late and then based on the fact that it's almost like if Michael Jordan scored the most points the last ten years of his career.
Or the last half of his career.
And then that's all people think that that's what happened with them.
That's not what happened.
So the jaguars have a chance to do that same thing.
I'm not saying use all of their draft picks on defense.
What I am saying is make sure you stack it with absolute depth almost like a college team.
Almost like one of those SEC teams that have droves and droves and droves of guys in the front seven and guys on the back end that just they can play.
You look at Seattle. You saw them having a whole but they had the starters.
But then everybody they even got backups paid.
Boy, my faith didn't start for them.
I don't think he did anyway.
Last year, I know they had the Marcus Lawrence to have some other people.
And you got dudes that were playing significant minutes or that were role players on the defense that end up getting big contracts to move on and go somewhere else.
Philly got one.
Philly got the DB from Seattle and he's going to make 15 million dollars in one year.
You have great players up front.
There's nothing that says there's nothing in the manual that tells you that you can you can't you can't get great backups.
I got this draft guy from the Jaguar.
I ain't seen nothing here that says you got to go in there and use all of your picks.
And everybody is going to be assigned to backup and they don't have any chance to do anything else.
It's not the way it works.
Those dudes have a chance to play.
Same way Parker Washington played the same way Antonio Johnson played the same way.
Basel Tutton played the same way.
Laquan Allen played the same way.
Jonah Monheim as the seventh round pick play.
You played in the playoff game against Buffalo.
The same way that they got Wyatt Milam involved.
Or the same way BJ Green played the same way.
Danny Striggle.
The same look man.
I can go down a ray on lane.
You know man you you ain't coming in here to do it to just sit there and be happy being on the team.
You coming here to win a job.
But those guys can't win the job if you don't take the best available player.
At the top of that second at the bottom of the second and early in the third round.
I keep looking at the boards and I keep telling people.
The Jaguars have four picks between 56 and 100.
That's four picks and 44 picks.
That's a pick every 11 pick.
And I promise you outside of maybe offensive line.
Maybe tied in.
Possibly wide receiver.
The main people that I keep seeing in like a 30 or 40 player or 40 selection area.
When I do any mock or when I look at anybody's sheet and and granted these sheets are not what the teams are doing and they're all different.
But when I look at people that I respect.
Been doing this over 45 years.
When I look at people I respect and granted we didn't have the internet.
I used to use magazines back in the day.
All right.
I used to use every one of them and I read everything that I could back in the day.
And now there's it's a lot of information out there.
Some of them are accurate.
Some of us not.
But the people that I have grown to trust and some of them are a lot younger than me because they work really, really hard at it.
They seem to believe that.
That's going to be the hot spot for linebackers, safeties.
Whatever's left of edge rushers and interior football players and cornerbacks.
It is defense defense defense.
So I would not be surprised.
The jaguars were heavy heavy defense.
Fortified the defense for coach camp.
Took a unit that was really, really good.
A great against the run decent against the past and turned that thing up.
Made them even better against the run, make them even better against the run and improve in the past defense by bringing all of those dudes back.
Hoping they stay healthy.
But then making sure you have two or three guys behind them.
Not two or three guys behind every position.
But two or three guys in that group.
New fresh long on.
I want them to go find another Monterey Brown.
Let him let him develop behind the new Monterey Brown.
And if Monterey Brown turns out to be Greg Newsom or Monterey Brown plays so well that he wants $20 million a year.
Then the new Monterey Brown behind them can step right up.
And you'll have a decision to make it at the very least.
Don't let it be a no-brainer. Make it be competition.
The same way if they shall toot and had not played well last year.
You might have seen the jaguars feel pressured to bring back Travis H&M because he was such a good player.
Now they had options.
Those options.
Good player.
That's a lot of money.
We're glad you got it, man.
Love you.
See you later.
But economically it's best for us to go ahead and move in this direction.
That doesn't happen if they don't hit on the base show.
Base show to draft it.
I'm just telling.
That's the way it goes.
So get as much competition.
Maybe make one side of the team.
Good.
If you can't spread it out, then just put it all in one place.
Use all your resources in one place and make this thing great in that one area.
All right.
Stuff happens.
Depth is needed.
I usually don't use the artwork.
I think I've already said it.
I'll say it twice.
Injury.
I usually don't do that because I don't believe speaking things into existence.
And I think it's bad karma.
But injuries do happen.
So that's the third one that I said here on locked on jaguars.
I'll tell you why those things as well as disappointing performances.
Sometimes we'll leave you high and dry.
If you don't take the approach that I'm talking about here today,
we'll discuss in just a second on locked on jaguars.

Third final segment here on locked on Jaguar is it is your team every day.
We thank you for making us your first listen don't take you for granted at all.
You are why we do this so every time I do a show or ask a question when I'm at a press conference.
I think what do the fans want to hear.
Sometimes when I do these shows I say things that fans don't want to hear but I think that authenticity.
And being organic like that always helps me out.
So fans never want to hear about injuries but.
The injuries are a reality of the football game and we're not playing games.
We're at the point where you're building your roster.
They're going to have 90 people on that roster.
They're only keeping a 53 so 37 aren't going to make it.
And then after they do that they're going to get a practice squad.
And then after they do that 53 one or two of those dudes may not make it depends on who's going to be free from around the league.
The jaguars have to.
It is incumbent of them.
Not only do they owe it to shotgun not only do they owe it to the fans not only do they owe it to the competition.
They owe it to themselves and they owe it to the rest of the team to make sure they arm them with the best players they possibly can.
There's no way you can do that without competition.
You can't choose it.
It has to choose itself.
It has to be once again the word organic.
This is what it is demonstrated performance.
I don't care if you got somebody at that spot or there's a third or fourth receiver that you love or or there's a you got these roster spots for a reason.
If you keep in five or six receiver make your fifth or six receiver the best possible player you can.
If there's room for a fourth corner to compete with Christian Braswell you bring him in and make him compete with Christian Braswell and make Christian Braswell compete with him.
If there's another safety that wants to come in here and thinks that he can challenge Eric Murray I don't care if he's a fourth round pick.
If he wants to challenge Eric Murray if Kamari Ramsey or whoever it is in the draft believe that they're better than Rayon Lane let him go out there and prove it.
It's almost like when when my kids used to be standing up to each other when they were little two boys at the time.
In my fact I tell you a quick story when I was doing radio before I was doing radio when I was calling in to Frank Franci show.
My kids I used to have to con them so they wouldn't make noise they were three and one my two sons that 33 and 31 now.
This is a true story I said a bowl of chips and sat it down but I was on hold so long they got to the end of the bowl and they were fighting over one chip.
And they were making noise and I told Franci and if you ask him he'll tell you this story he remembers it.
Look man I got a gold dog I want to get this point what he do is about to fight over take the chip and he started laughing so.
Now mind you I had done radio already with Frank but I was on a little bit of hiatus because I had I was a single parent at the time so I got.
Oh this is right before I became a single parent so this is why I did radio but I walked away from it for a while.
And I realized I sat and watched them the big brother won the little brother looked at me and I said is what it is.
You be all right that's tough coaching it's tough love so as they got older little dudes start fighting for his chips back and what happened when they got in high school.
Little dude became six foot three two hundred and ninety pounds but he still had reference for his older brother until this day he looks at him as old he wouldn't even raise up in his brother.
So the thing is is sometimes as a coach man it's just like being a parent you love them all but you better if you want to find out what the pecking order is and I watch a lot of Nat geo and I watch a lot of dog training videos don't break it up.
You need to see because you're preparing them to play under pressure you're preparing them in case somebody gets hurt next man up is a real thing you're preparing them for playing on a pressure pack Sunday and late December or early January with the whole world watching either on the road or at home.
And their careers and their and their professional life is going to be defined about what they're able to do and what they're not able to do on that field that's a difficult thing.
It's something that people like me that grew up loving the game and wanting to be a part of pro athletics never even got a sniff to feel.
You prepare people for high pressure situations in football just like you do with anything else through demonstrated performance.
I'm hard on you because and I'm putting you in this tough situation because I want to make sure I want to make sure that you can handle it on Sunday the other thing I want to make sure about I want to make sure that those other 52 guys know that you can handle it on Sunday.
So this is how this is built and when it's built you can't be feeling sorry for people you can't assign jobs.
Even though a part of it is paying people and being right about the people that you paid you better still fortify this thing if your fifth receiver is your fifth receiver make sure you go out and get the best player you can.
There's one circumstance why I have a different take about that and that is somebody got a play special team so if a guy is your fifth receiver and he's better than your six receiver.
But your six receiver is a hell of a gunner and your fifth receiver is all he's ever going to look like he's going to be is a dude is going to be a backup then you might have to keep the six receiver instead of fifth receiver because he has the duality to play special teams.
But outside of that no man when you're going to take this approach this fandom approach like I know him he's a good player we're going to leave in that no you better when you go and draft especially now that you said you don't necessarily need anything if you're James glass on you said you can take the best player available.
You said guys you want guys to come in and contribute but you have to put them in tears and do this and that so you're still looking at the guys that can get it done and if you don't pick them your rival might pick them and you're going to have to play against them so make sure.
That you understand that the jaguars could take this approach make one side of the ball great at a time if that's the way it lines up in the draft they make pick players at positions that you don't think that they need but they know better.
Because they're putting money in the bank and the fortifying themselves because they understand that injuries happen see they know that more than us because they pass the training staff every day they get breached by the training staff every single day especially during the year about where guys are so.
You want to sit there and and think that this team is going to take a fans approach to it and then in a middle of the season when they need something they're going to turn and they ain't there that's not what's going to happen so don't be surprised in the draft.
If they do things you don't think they're going to do we don't do anything here we don't think we're going to do because it's locked on jaguars it's your team every day didn't say my team your team here locked on jaguars make sure you tap in man we got one week left one week left and we'll be waking up on a Friday saying okay who.
