On December 10, 1946 one of the worst aviation disasters in U.S. history occurred on the slopes of Mt. Rainier. Six transport planes departed from San Diego, California en route to Seattle carrying between them more than 200 U.S. Marines. While flying over southwestern Washington, the aircraft all encountered heavy weather and were forced to navigate solely by instruments. Only 1 of the 6 aircraft actually made it to the Seattle airport which had been their destination. 4 had turned back and landed in Portland while the last transport vanished. A two week search over air and ground turns up nothing. The military offers up a $5000 reward for information regarding the wrecked plane. In June of that year, while flying around Mt. Rainier in search of the wreckage, one man would sight something much more unusual than a downed aircraft. He would have an encounter that would, as some might argue, kicked off the age of modern UFO sightings.
